Every time I hear this it makes me so glad that I live here in Ireland, where the music touches the heart, and where such people keep the traditions alive.
Good to see all the positive posts about Cara Dillon & Paul Brady's singing. They complement each other nicely...but for me the most beautiful part of this is Sam Lakeman's piano playing. Here's to you Sam, another unsung hero!
my mum was sadly taken from us five months ago and we went to her concert. We played black is the color at her funeral this one's for you my dear angel in the sky I love you so so much xxxxxx
Cara and her sister have got to have the most beautiful voices in the world. And to see Paul Brady -- this is beautiful. I'm from the United States, and this music calls out to my soul. Thank you.
I’ve met Cara and her husband Sam Lakeman, had my photo taken with them when I worked in a local venue. Have seen her in concert twice, hope to see Paul in concert when we can
Such dignity and proportion....such liquid silver voices. There is in the world no better venue for music that matters than the Trans-Atlantic Sessions.
A couple of days ago, some part of me wanted to listen to this song and its many equally lovely renditions. And just recently, I have heard of the terror attacks that happened in Derry. I'm from SEA and I appreciate Ireland, its people, its music, and its culture a lot. The Corrs introduced me to Ireland when I was young and later on, I met a lovely old Irish woman from Galway who considers me as a good friend and an honorary Irish citizen. My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Derry.
Streets of Derry lyrics After the morning there comes an evening And after the evening another day And after a false love there comes a true love I'd have you listen now to what I say I swear my love is the finest young man As fair as any the sun shines on But how to save him, I do not know it For he has got a sentence to be hung As he was marching the streets of Derry I own he marched up right manfully Being much more like a commanding officer Than a man to die upon the gallows tree "What keeps my love she's so long in coming Oh what detains her so long from me Or does she think it a shame or scandal To see me die upon the gallows tree" He looked around and he saw her coming And she was dressed all in woollen fine The weary steed that my love was riding It flew more swifftly than the wind Come down, come down from that cruel gallows I've got your pardon from the king And I'll let them see that they dare not hang you And I'll crown my love with a bunch of green 'It tells the story of a young gentleman who fell in love with a rich lady but her parents did not consent to their marriage and had him condemned to be hanged. But she defied her parents, obtained a pardon from the Queen and married him in the end.'
The senior and magisterial Paul Brady and the fresh young voice of Cara Dillon singing in unison - magic. For a visual bonus there are glimpses of the so-pretty harpist, Catriona MacKay.
Lost cause? I beg your pardon -- I am an ardent fan of Cara Dillon, Paul Brady, and many other musicians from overseas. Just because there aren't many posts from we Americans doesn't mean we aren't fans. :) I listen to Deanta, Kate Rusby, The Wailin' Jennys, Cara Dillon ... the list goes on. I don't limit my musical interests to only "American" musicians. But I also lead a busy life and don't always have time to devote to commenting on videos.
I try not to use absolutes when I about music, if only to avoid argument. But I agree with you. The extent to which this rendition affects me emotionally is quite unnerving. I also think that it is far and away the best version of this song. An incredible piece.
Why are u arguing on the page of such a beautiful song? What does it matter anyway? Argue football on a football page. Argue politics on a politics page. I personally think this is a beautiful song sung by beautiful voices. I love the two of them separately but together they seem perfection. Listening to it makes me smile.
I just love this. Paul Brady's voice doesn't have the purity or control of Cara's but it's still beuatiful (especially the bit where he vocalises the tune). Outstanding collaboration!!!
I'm pretty sure you can download all of the Transatlantic Sessions tracks from iTunes. It might be a bit expensive to purchase all of them, but they are available.
The voices together are exquisite. More duet and less solos would have been better. An American with grandparents from County Down, resident in Italy and currently living in Cali, Colombia. Music is beyond borders. Wendy
Beautiful beautiful music. Given the concept behind the 'Transatlantic' series and the balance of very fine American Country musicians and singers, does anyone else find it strange that very few of the views are from the States? Perhaps they need a push. Suggestions from anyone or are they a lost cause?
6 dislikes!? seriously? Now, I'm not forcing my tastes on anyone, but this video is pretty hard to find, let alone stumble across. How on earth can you hunt it out, then STILL not like it? It's almost perfect.

@Becca1996x Indeed it's refreshing. All of us have popular music we enjoy during our youth. As we age we tend to cast that aside like many of the other "trappings of youth". This music can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

Cara Dillon is brilliant beyond words. She brings such fireworks to traditional songs. -- and dear uncle Paul, he is always transcendent
10 out of 10 absolutely excellent from all musicians and singers.
Good to see all the positive posts about Cara Dillon & Paul Brady's singing. They complement each other nicely...but for me the most beautiful part of this is Sam Lakeman's piano playing. Here's to you Sam, another unsung hero!
Brady's a genius and Car Dillon is wonderful. This duet is lovely and moving.
It is the musical phrasing that gets me . The combination of the two voices is so powerful . What a treat !!
Cara is my favourite singer in any genre, her voice is so lovely, like the first robin in spring
my mum was sadly taken from us five months ago and we went to her concert. We played black is the color at her funeral this one's for you my dear angel in the sky I love you so so much xxxxxx

Pure class! Paul Brady cut this song with Andy Irvine 30 years ago and comes back to sing backup to Cara Dillon. Hat's off to you, Paul!
He's always pure class, IMHO.
What a beautiful version of an unforgettable song. I listen to it constantly and it never disappoints.
Cara and her sister have got to have the most beautiful voices in the world. And to see Paul Brady -- this is beautiful. I'm from the United States, and this music calls out to my soul. Thank you.

This is such a beautiful song.I was so pleased to find it, thank you so much for posting it. It really is lovely
If I could ask for an angel to come down and sing for me it might well be Cara and she might sing this song for me. Outstanding and priceless!

Cara has the voice of an angel!
She still has the voice of an angel, and I have seen her live twice since my original posting.

Streets of Derry lyrics
After the morning there comes an evening
And after the evening another day
And after a false love there comes a true love
I'd have you listen now to what I say
I swear my love is the finest young man
As fair as any the sun shines on
But how to save him, I do not know it
For he has got a sentence to be hung
As he was marching the streets of Derry
I own he marched up right manfully
Being much more like a commanding officer
Than a man to die upon the gallows tree
"What keeps my love she's so long in coming
Oh what detains her so long from me
Or does she think it a shame or scandal
To see me die upon the gallows tree"
He looked around and he saw her coming
And she was dressed all in woollen fine
The weary steed that my love was riding
It flew more swifftly than the wind
Come down, come down from that cruel gallows
I've got your pardon from the king
And I'll let them see that they dare not hang you
And I'll crown my love with a bunch of green
'It tells the story of a young gentleman who fell in love with a rich lady but her parents did not consent to their marriage and had him condemned to be hanged. But she defied her parents, obtained a pardon from the Queen and married him in the end.'
Amazing. Very emotive love cara Dillon and the transatlantic sessions

Well his voice had the purity but he' s old now ^^
Has it really been 11 years since I posted that comment? I still love this. 😍
@@Cotictimmy Some things are timeless 🙂
Paul's voice is still excellent.

I'd argue that music is a result of borders and the ethnic cultures within them.
Wonderful song that I’ve loved for many years. I’m distracted by the gorgeous pianist.
grand,grand and grand!!!
Sublime.
Cara is beautiful

Buff que temazo madre, muuy bonito
The wonderful Aly Bain (from Shetland) on fiddle there as well.
This recording, if I'm not mistaken, was from The Transatlantic Sessions, hosted partly by Aly Bain. This song is a real keeper. I've been trying to find out more about the origins, or background of the song. I'm always surprised by the history of Ireland and the antagonisms since Cromwell!
