  • I used this song whilst studying an MA in Music at uni. This is a great arrangement of the song, with Cara Dillon singing with Iarla O Lionaird at the opening of the Ryder Cup 2006. I saw nobody has uploaded it yet so I'll give fans of the artists the chance to see it. Something was up with RTE One's broadcast that day, as you'll see.

Brilliant stuff from Cara and Iarla and team, Derry to Iarthar Corcaí, all Ireland, and credit to Donal Lunny and Liam Og.

Irish is hard language due to lack of use but basically it is a lament for a hero/lover who died far from his love and his home and is being mourned by his true love.

I really liked this version of the song and find it very beautiful. The recording seems to be less than ideal, a better one would be nice to listen to.

Irish gaelic - or simply, Irish. There are several gaelic languages still managing to stay alive on the planet. :)
I love the Highland Sessions rendition, but this is a great rendition as well. Beautifully suited for the venue and with a magnificent choral accompaniment!
Anyone just getting to know Iarla, perhaps you are familiar with AfroCelt, Iarla's other musical world.

I like to call her the "Irish Sissel" :) This is wonderful, so one thing should be clear: once the Olympic Games will be held in Ireland or Northern Ireland, she should get the job of singing a tune.

Strange to see this duo. I agree with previous posts: Iarla O Lionaird is a quantum leap ahead of Cara Dillon as a singer. She would be pleasant enough as a country ceilidh floor singer, but so many Irish female voices are superior to hers. It hardly mattered that the commentator's voice-over started before they had stopped singing.

Ummm, sorry, what was that? I haven't used Gaelige for years, and my little outburst against OutlawedArchangel used all that I was able to dredge for, which is a pity, as I believe it's arguably one of the most beautiful languages I've ever heard. I intend to begin studying again shortly.

I do agree that Celtic Woman does too much with the showing off (I HATE the choregraphy) but I do like the fact that their voices (girls and choir)evenly blend and I like David Downes arrangement (mouth music and extra lyrics) but I do wish they'd sang it all in Irish... sounds so much better than in English. =)

I like that's all in Irish, but the emotions and vocal power are kind of weak. The Celtic Woman really can project FULL volume.

You can't be serious about that. Of all the preformances of this wonderful song on UA-cam the Celtic Women effort would not be my top 10.
Celtic Women seem mostly about themselves -- their music is pleasant enough to hear I guess but just dreadful to watch - too much showboating, too much pomp, performers too full of themselves and the effort seems lacking in SOUL.
Celtic Women have over stayed their welcome on the traditional music stage in my view. They were intersting for a while.

Tá sé deas feiceáilt go bhfuil daoine ag ceol an t-amhrán seo i nGaeilge. In áit a bheith cuir focail Béarla fríd. Is é seo an leagan is deise atá ar UA-cam.

Ironic, isn't it, that you chose to write this in "the filth that is the english language"?
I am aware there is a deeper meaning to ANY song when sung in it's native language. That's part of the problem translators run into, there's often no "exact" translation for a term, so they try their best. please don't swear on here, as some children DO use the internet to try expanding their minds. And by the by, one "Archangel" to another: Bí ' do thost, buinneachán.
Go mbeire an diabhal leis thú.
