- Transatlantic Sessions series 3 (2007)
piano: Sam Lakeman
organ/harmonium thingy: Donald Shaw
slide: Jerry Douglas
guitar: Russ Barenberg
bass: Todd Parks
percussion: James Mackintosh
The wonder is that you can continue to look up the marvelous Transatlantic Sessions and enjoy this quality over and over
Probably my favourite UA-cam video.
Cara's pure vocal is sublime but for me the real jewel is Jerry Douglas with a beautifully understated lap steel guitar. The triplet he plays near the end after the line "singing out across the bay" gets me everytime I hear it. The transatlantic sessions are the best music series ever IMO, another top fave being James Taylor being backed by Julie Fowlis and others singing Boston to Belfast.
Cara and Sam. That has to be one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I so wish I could see you live doing that song.
Utterly enchanting. I love the way her Irish accent comes through in her singing. I came late to Transatlantic Sessions, however now I'm totally hooked.
Discovered the stunning musicality of this pair on Transatlantic Sessions. Bought all the albums and added this lass to my list of great songstresses - Joni, Kate, Sandy and Cara. The emotive sensibility of vocal and arrangements are second to none!
Of all the songs that Dougie has written, (& I am a great fan of his awesome talent) for me this is his best. To come across it performed by 2 of my other fav. artists is something very, very special indeed.
Came back to this after a few years. Still touches a spot in my soul. Beautifully performed
I’m trying to understand the song’s meaning. Can you help?
@@junior.von.claire....... missing her lovely Johnny is confusing her mind and soal - whereve she is looking at ....

A terrific song with a piercing message, one of the best voices I've ever had the pleasure of hearing & superb accompaniment. Standing ovation to these folks.
ArtJacoby I’m trying to understand the song’s meaning. Can you help?
Cara has a stunning voice, so beautiful, this is one of my fav songs of hers.
I heard her sing this live last week (5th Feb) in Birmingham during the Transatlantic Sessions tour. How could I not have come across Cara before ...? The clarity and pureness in her voice transfixed me and I had to search this out. Just brilliant (as is most of the TS stuff).
Cara will always be my favorite singer.
great just great to hear this from abroad. miss home. ireland Scotland wherever
The world's most underrated female Irish vocalist. She is the jewel in the crown, with a voice of gold
Makes me cry every time
I was held spellbound and breathless during this exquisite performance. My thanks.
Always come back here after a few pints With the family. A fantastic song
this song is so pure and beautiful from her
Wonderful rendition. I've listened to it a bunch of times. I understand Cara's new cd is out and she is celebrating a new baby. What a blessing she is.
The voice of an angel
I think this is just beautiful. Thankyou.
great interpretation of the Dougie McLean song. Well done Cara you have a beautiful voice.
Cara's own words tonight at her stunning performance in Bromsgrove dedicated this song to refugees fleeing their homes. Let us give thoughts and help where we can to those forced from their homes through conflict and war.
I WANDER THROUGH YOU TUBE AND FIND SO MANY BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS VOICES AND SONGS AND COME TO CARA DILLON AGAIN AND FEEL SAD FOR BEING AWAY SO LONG
A gentle melodic voice. Beautiful.
Perfect. I sat in the front row at Taunton's Brewhouse Theatre last night. I have heard Dougie Maclean's song and have a copy. This is a beautiful rendition. We are lucky to have Cara and Sam around. Thanks for all the wonderful music
what a voice this one is the best for me lovely song
thanks for posting. this track makes me cry, Jerry Douglas's steel guitar is beautiful as is Cara..
wonderful, really wonderful music & musicians
o wow, I saw this on the TV and it blew me away then. The combination of Cara's crystal voice and Jerry Douglas's haunting understated steel guitar does strange things down my spine. An all time favourite, thanks for posting :o)
Jerry Douglas is one of a kind. Excellence in everything he plays
The most beautiful voice I have ever heard!
The crown princess of Irish vocals
Just WOW! Beautiful
This was One of the best Transatlantic Sessions of all time - the slide guitar was a great touch
awesome Cara. Pride of Northern Ireland. & Sam Lakeman what can i say - incredible.
I must have played this hundreds of times and it gets me every time, truly beautiful
But there is peace for me when I'm listening to your song
Garden Valley
Cara Dillon
This is really not my home
Oh where are you my lovely Johnny?
I'm afraid and all alone
There is no peace for me
I'm sitting in the stranger's room
Playing at the stranger's table
Shining empty like the moon
There is no peace for me
But in the darkness struggle cold
I think about a garden valley
Gentle as the leaves unfold
Singing out across the bay
Distant and so far away
There is no peace for me
I'm blinded by your city lights
I wander through these fearful places
The colours fade to black and white
There is no peace for me
And these are not the friends I know
These are not their smiling faces
A desert that no-one should know
There is no peace for me
But in the darkness struggle cold
I think about a garden valley
Gentle as the leaves unfold
Singing out across the…
Now I know and feel it well
Poor immigrants deep sunken feeling
Standing at the gates of Hell
There is no peace for me
Burned out by their master's greed
Cruel exile transportation
Robbed of every love and need
There is no peace for me
But in the darkness struggle cold
I think about a garden valley
Gentle as the leaves unfold
Singing out across the bay
Distant and so far away
There is no peace for me
Beautiful
Transatlantic Sessions back and I am loving it.
Thanks for posting
Lovely, thanks! 👏👏👏👏
Singing this for my music practical :) Absolutely gorgeous!
I so enjoyed this rendition. Marked as a favorite.
with so much grace concentrated in one voice
So gorgeous!! I absolutely love the arrangement
I own the CD version of this song, and for some reason it was produced to eliminate all traces of Cara's lovely Derry accent. This Transatlantic version is so incredibly moving and beautiful.
--from a fan in Japan
Chibi Mie ~ _That_ is criminal. Or at least actionable. Sue the label for revenues lost from the brazen theft of her accent.
Sublime singing, brilliant song, piano accompaniment transcendent: overwhelmed..! From a 75 yr old Aussie with solid Celtic heritage
Top notch . Wonderful musicians on top of their game.
im actually addicted to this song!!!!
It`s just beautiful.
Stunning
Such raw talent and beauty.
beautiful, moving, love it.
I'm still partial to Dougie Maclean's original version since it was very meaningful for me in a tough part of my life, but it's such a wonderful song. I certainly understand other artists being moved to pick it up as well.
Well, this is a history lesson and a revelation in song! Thanks profoundly! It belongs in classrooms helping our young to develop historical awareness and empathy, and I may get the chance to bring it there I hope. Exile, transportation, slavery, and worse. The path to universal human dignity and civil liberties has been a long one indeed!
This is lovely!
Beautiful, Cara!
stunning x
Oh, my god. I love Dougie's version of this song, but this is magnificent! I'd love to hear them work together.

Just beautiful. And Sam looks very like his brothers!
Ho hum, just another day at the office eh Cara? Dear God I wish my days were like that, and a backing team like that...
WOW! wunderschön!
fantastic
Wow how pretty is that .... I love it .....
great song!
Yeah... I reckon I could trust this pack of musicians...
you will find it on the Cara's DVD,the redcastle sessions. Happy listening.
gpk1027, The song isn't about slavery, AFAIK the song (written by Dougie Maclean) is about forced emigration from Scotland. The line "burned out by their masters' greed" will refer to the Highland Clearances.
Awesome!!! She's playing in Bath soon! SOOO excited! 29th April, Komedia if you're close!! :-)
Fab.
The song fir us all who do have demons
There are now two CDs and a PAL DVD of Transatlantic Sessions 3 available in the UK. Strangely the CDs are missing some stuff that was broadcast including this particular item (not sure if another is due), but the DVD has everything broadcast plus some extras.
We need lots of miss dillon to quell this world
Cara rocks ;-)
Originally by Dougie MacLean for anyone who wonders.
great writing, I can relate. This is a beautiful song with deep meaning.
Yeah, I think Cara is very obviously someone who has real talent and became famous for that reason mostly, there was no "hype" necessary to make her well known, which tends to put people off and makes them post negative comments and such.
Peace in Northern one day!
urdcult....get the transatlantic Sessions 3 DVD from Amazon. There is this and more and more great music. I can't stop playing it. it's just beautiful.
I know this girl... Or lets say i'm insanely in love with this girl... She looks a bit lik cara. Every time i hear one of cara songs i begin to cry. Most pf my tears i joy beacause of her beuatufull voice... But some of them is cause of i dont know if the girl im love, loves me... I know you know if it is you i mean.
Tommy Fleming is coming out with a version of this song.... incredibly moving
Track 5 of her album After the Morning
Love the Derry accent
I have a question: I saw Cara sing the first time in a live concert show of the Spanish satellite TV channel TVE International. I can't remember the name of the show (I don't even speak Spanish, just randomly zapped to that channel). Does anyone know what the name of that concert was and where to get a recording of that video in any form?
Hard to find a standalone PAL player that won't handle NTSC these days - sorry that it's apparently still trickier vice versa. If you've a DVD drive on you computer it will have no problem, bet your bottom dollar.
Can't do links to sources here - I'll backchannel some.
@guitargenius1234 ah i know, but still smokin! x
OK - I've changed the setting.
roll on the lyric in belfast :D
sounds hot when she says smiling faces at 1:52
Is that a chubby, Jerry Douglas on Dobro???
Yep, he has been the musical director, together with fiddle player Ally Bain, since seasons 2 of the Transatlantic Sessions.
Indeed. What with the fine Irish cuisine and all. Or fried road food.
Give Jerry a pass. He's guilty only of hogging the stage. So f.i.n.e. on every song.
This song is about being in great debt, and being sent to labour in Tazmania by the english government. And longing for home, as anyone would who is being sent into indebted slavery.
cara your good paul p England x x x x 😀 ❤ 😎 👍
Is this song about slavery?
It's about the Highland Clearances.
