When it comes to Mountain Warfare, There is no one who does it better than the Indians. This is their environment! I have complete respect for these warriors. Cold, Wet, Windy and altitude to contend with and b e able to fight at the end. Amazing man. Great video mate

For sure dude! Imagine the resiliency of the dudes acclimated to the worse conditions ever. Easy to say most wouldnt volunteer for such conditions
What a lot of people don't understand is they train and fight at heights that Helicopters can't reach.
That puts it into perspective.
The SAS also use the same training course run by the Indians. The Indians are the masters of hight level war fighting.
True, well India's Military is mainty adapted to fight with China, that's why most of India's Fighter jets and Helicopters are those ones which can reach high altitudes, but there is always a limit to how much those can accomplish
Even at altitudes that some helicopters can reach, it will be pushing them closer to limits up there. Winds are wild and terrain obstacles are everywhere that add to the challenge. They also can have some trouble finding a safe spot to land, when much of the terrain is steep slopes of loose rock, snow, and ice. Setting down on an unknown flat spot of white may drop you through into a deep crevasse. Thus landing spots may be quite a hike or climb away. Indian military leaders tend to send people down at the first signs of altitude sickness because they can hike out before they become a casualty that would need some high risk methods to haul them out.
This is the main reason China 🇨🇳 back up before start the war..

Yep, I'm from Finland and have trained in some -30 celcius temperatures, even stayed a night without a fire or a tent, but it's on a relatively flat land; it's nothing compared to what these guys do. Full respect!

That officer's uniform you were checking out, is a Lt. Colonel and an instructor at HAWS, the blue badge on his right chest pocket signifies that he's a specialist at high altitude warefare, and the red one below it is the most important one, he's part of 51 Special action group of NSG which is a special force specialising in CI/CT, anti hijack and urban warfare,hence his name tag is blurred. India has the third highest peak in the world the Kanchenjunga at 8600 meters and India also controls the highest battlefield the siachen glacier at 6000 m. The US army also visits Haws for joint exercises and Training.

When I visited India I learnt that the altitude varies from minus 7 feet in Kuttanad to plus 28000 feet in Kangchenjunga. The battle of Siachen Glacier in 1984 took place at 20'000 feet. Military operations in the area have cost the lives of over 2000 since then. Its a brutal environment to live in, never mind to fight. For sure thr Indian soldiers I met on joint Ex-beds were just tough as hell!!

Hi, I have done a basic & advanced course in HAWS at Gulmarg Kashmir as part of my service in Indian Army in 1998. Was deployed in North glacier for 6 months. Served in other High Altitude Areas as well for my first 14 yrs in service. I am a veteran now. Doing a course at HAWS and actually serving in High Altitude Areas for years are two different things.😅

I suspect that the man had to walk back down the mountain because 18-20,000ft is beyond the limit of many helicopters due to thin air.
Our helicopters make 21,000 feet easily . They are flying in rations and evacuating people daily on the Siachin glacier which is the highest battle field in the world which we hold . Our soldiers have evolved that way.
He will walk off the mountain if he can . That too is part of warfare training . Not in all situations can a helicopter get you.
I myself have once been a victim of high altitude sickness and walked off a mountain from 17,700 feet down . (5,400 meters) in -25 degrees C ( - 15 F) and I had to walk 30 km at that altitude (18 miles)
A helicopter will get you if you collapse. They are on standby and everyone knows your condition . But that is how you get tough troops . Remember those who go through HAWS are not green recruits. These are already seasoned soldiers undergoing 11 weeks specialist training . Most have already been in combat already
Very highly specialised Helicopters and a lot of times, they can't take off from that altitude. Rescue operations in the area have to be performed in a way that the helicopter can't land and has to approach at extreme angles,.
Latest Update (25.06.2021): Indian Himalayan units are trained to operate in winters upto -60 degrees C at higher than 10000ft, while Chinese soldiers could not. So they have trained and deployed local Tibetan men for combat.
Only for the tibetans to Rebel and massacre their Chinese commanders when the actual war breaks out
Tibetans run away and take refuge in India. I feel really sorry for them. Imagine having to run away from your own home and the people who sheltered you will fight to death against your own brothers

Once I went to J&K with my friend Ashish . We were trekking in Drass village mountain to see the village view from Top of it . Suddenly due to altitude sickness me &my friend felt very dizzy . We barely took a step when I fell down and was not able to stand because of dizziness there . We both felt difficult breathing when suddenly there was 2 soldiers of Bihar Regiment found us
They carried us on their shoulder (my weight 67 kg , Ashish around 72 kg) And they were walking down the mountain in heavy snowfall. All these happened on 12,000 ft. They gave medicine and hot water . I remember I wake up after 2-3 hours and asked local guide their camp location to thank them. While in conversation, one of soldier told us that their unit was in siachen and they could not join their comrades because of low fitness and I was Flagger Basted

Nope...these guys are generally made for siachen which is like a "cold hell" and Chinese soldiers don't even dare to patrol that area....for china they have special regiments Deployed in Ladakh and tibetan region where the invasion is most likely ! Those regiments proved to be very effective when China started to claim more land and started deployment over there but these Indian guys captured the essential peaks beforehand.
@@mg9854 No some of these are also for the chinese side. basically according to my knowledge soldiers are trained at HAWS for all Corps, be it either facing pakistan, siachen or china, sikkim and Arunachal. just their clothing and gear differs a bit.
China only have high-tech weapons and soldiers. Fighting needs "Guts", they don't have that.
Yes, these Indian Army soldiers broke the necks of PLA soldiers. At that time, China had to suffer a minimum of 40 ++ deaths. and also 20 indian soldier lost their life due to this clash.

Right now the conflict between India and China is happening at around the elevation of 18,640 ft high into the icy -40 degrees frigid temperatures. Chinese are unable to withstand the extreme temperatures and there’s a very high rotation of troops in their quarters, while India is sitting comfortably at the highest peak in that region known as the “Black Top” peak ! In a mountain warfare scenario, Indians are possibly one of the best in the world if not the best !

I've watched videos of Indian soldiers doing drill. They tend to take it to the extreme, so I'm not surprised that they would be in step climbing an ice face.
Hey bud. This is a fellow paratrooper here from India. Actually at the himalayan and Karakoram mountain range the altitude is pretty high. Most of the areas are above 10/11k ft height from sea level. The Siachen glacier itself starts from 17/18k and the forward posts goes upto 22k ft of height. People who go posted to the high altitudes first need to complete the mandatory basic high altitude course.

Finland has old, eroded mountains in Lapland known as "fells" or "tunturi" in Finnish, the highest of which, Halti, is only 1365 m. That's a whole different ball game from the Himalayas. 🏔 Still, it can be -40°C, I'm told. 🥶 I've only been in -30°C myself, but hey I'm just Canadian!
the difference between finland and himalaya is that of height, o2 is very less, skin becomes numb, i hve been up to a height of 15k feets and breathing at that altitude is difficult, you actually feels that o2 is nessary for humans, my father and grandfather has been to siachen and its a whole diffrent place, my father lost his hand there and my grandfather lost his eyes and the thing is no one comes back FIT from there. its very unfortunate we have to man those places

We have seas around us , the highest and coldest mountains, the densest of the forests and hottest deserts and our army is trained in all of these......we can fight anywhere anytime be it heat or height , rains or deserts or jungles....proud of mine indian army versatility...jai hind
They're training to join their respective units deployed in high altitude, the best are given the opportunity to join HAWS as instructors.

Wrong. The US has mountains, valleys, plains, deserts, Tropical and Temperate Rainforests, swamps, marshes, bogs and tundras. That's every major terrain in the world. 60% of India is Mountains and Jungles.

US Military is the best in the world
Nobody can imagine how an altitude above 5500 meters feels like unless he has actually been there. A normal person can barely walk at that altitude. Leave apart climbing on ice glaciers and then fighting a war.
Indian Army is posted in Mountains, Glaciers (Siachen), Deserts, Jungles & almost every type of terrain you can think of. There's also a separate training school for everything. You can also search CIJW, Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare school which specialises in training for jungle warfare.

Only the best few from the course might get an instructor opportunity. And that officer in the beginning is a Lt Col and is wearing badges of High Altitude warfare school instructor and previously he's been a commando at India's elite National Security Guard. Other than that he's an infantry officer with ribbons showing what all operations he's carried out and it's evident that he has been actively involved in High altitude, glacial ops, jungle environments and Counter insurgency operations apart from the conventional warfare.
Well, best helicopters like Apache and Russian MI17 can't fly at this much altitude. Although India has developed and tested a helicopter called LCH that can fly at this altitude. Indian army is about to place an order for these helicopters in coming days. Kudos 👍👍👍👍

I'm full Navaho and in the U.S. I grew up in the mountains (Four Corners region). The elevation of the mountains in my area is 3,000 meters above sea level (just under 10,000 ft). I've seen top atheletes from around the country come near my home only to constantly run out of breath, but for us indigenous mountain people living at high altitudes, breathing thin air is every day life. We have breathing techniques for different activities like doing field work, running, or hiking. This is something I learned from my grandma, which was passed down from our ancestors. I made some new friends from India recently and I told them about the mountains I am from. They said it reminds them about the mountain people who became soldiers north of Utter Pradesh and to come check it out. So, here I am. This is neat :D

U.S. Marine Cold Weather Mountain Training is nothing compared to these guys! I did some training back in 1976-ish, while stationed at Camp Pendleton. While I love the mountains, I'm not a cold weather commando.

Re the mountains sickness, it's related to oxygen, but ultimately evolves into High Altitude Cerebral/Pulmonary Oedema, so you end up with lungs full of fluid and a brain getting crushed inside your skull. This is undesirable.

There are very few helicopters that can operate reliably at these altitudes, especially military attack and transport helicopters. The best high-altitude operation helicopters you can get today are the Indian made helicopters.

Lol I remember finding out -40 C =F (I use C for temp), very weird but useful. Us Canadians are a weird folk, apparently we are metric, but I only know my height and weight in feet and pounds XD go figure!

Metric is better. And the whole argument Americans bring on its relation to the British is misinformed, as you see the metric system originated in India, and the British used it so i guess the US and some countries influenced by them don't use it. In all fairness its a lot more stable system of measurement.
Just below the Officer's (the Senior instructor) right pocket there is a red badge what you see is the NSG - SAG badge. NSG means National Security Guard aka black cat commandos. They serve for 3 years in NSG and later return back to Thier parent regiment. They are elite special forces who are selected from Army and even some paramilitary personnel. And SAG means special Action Group. Most of the NSG-SAG Operatives are Para SF/Paratroopers so they are Para-Qualified.
We operate at the highest battlefield in the world - Siachin Glacier, at the Bilafondla Ridge we man the highest post called Bana Post @ 21,884 feet above mean sea level.
NORDIC COUNTRIES are much colder due to their higher latitudes , however her we are fighting at punishingly high altitudes hence the challeng imposed on man at this terrains is a living nightmare and only the outstanding make it.
Nature takes its toll on our boys , PTSD, frostbite, oedema etc ... God! You should be here to witness thee extraordinary men of War.

our Indian army has maintained control over the highest battlefield in the world(siachen glacier) for decades, where humans are not supposed to be alive, and our soldiers do it to keep our country secure. Proud to be Indian.
A 'basic' level Sar Pass trek at ~14000 ft in summer gave me the opportunity of trekking for 13 hrs on 1-2 ft deep snow with the most hellish headaches and the coldest of winds I have ever felt. At height bit less than those, fresh poop(you don't have normal toilets but rather pits) emit water vapour smoke. Now imagine that your job is basically to ensure border safety at height greater than 15000 ft. That's these people. Grand salute to the Indian Armed Forces.
I have done this course . Med evac by helicopters is rarely possible due to weather and visibility constraints . Also helicopter flying in such terrain can be treacherous, besides limited landing sites at such altitudes outside of bases and posts . The answer is to get the effected person to lower altitudes as soon as possible - generally the recovery is as dramatic as the onset of cold related afflictions . Best case is if he can walk back with a buddy , else the standard stretcher bearers routine takes over . Believe me , taking a person off the mountain by stretcher is difficult to put it mildly.

The trainees are already soldiers in the Indian Army. The volunteer or are recommended for such special courses. So the trainees are already serving soldiers and they get the basic training just to get used to the height. Then comes in the advanced course

@@mranonymous9622 yes they are. and even though you're right about the techs, that doesn't change the fact that they are the best. they operate at a different level. and there should be no shame in admitting that. also, war fatigue and a drastic pull out as a result of government orders after keeping the taliban in check for years isn't exactly "lost in afghanistan".
but then of course, what comes out of that best is subjective in may occassions- in the himalayas, for instance, indian forces definitely stand the better chance with far more experience and training. besides calling the US forces the best i personally wouldn't rank any military power but indian military is up there with the very few best forces around the world.
US and India have geo similarities....Like you mentioned Louisiana...we have deserts in our western borders where temperatures go near 50°C and then icy Himalayan mountain ranges...including Siachen post. US also has icy regions like in Alaska.
Deserts, frozen Himalayas, rainforests, backwaters, swamps... Indian army have to deal with many types of border terrains. Climate and terrain is itself the best teacher for Indian army

India is regarded as one of the finest mountain warfare countries with The High altitude training school regarded as the best in the world where the Royal Marines, Alpha Marines and some US special forces (I don't remember the name) come to get trained together 🙏🙏

This training for Siachin Glacier, the highest battlefield of the world. The air is too thin to operate a Helicopter there. That's why they have to be trained to walk down to a point from where they can be rescued by the Helicopters
Indian Army had to fight 1999 Kargil War At 16K Feet Above Sea Level...At Temperature of -50°C(-58°F) & Even Lower than that temperature while sometimes climbing an inclination of 85°

It's getting so difficult to get into Indian army, I went for nationals hurdles competition, army did not choose. For army selection the focus is mostly on extreme endurance. Now I understand why they focus so much on endurance
Dude....this terrain is 14k ft in himalayas. Just to give you an idea this training happened from 6-10 AM. There is a saying there, Mountains make their own weather to eat Men Alive. When I was there, I have never been so beaten up by everything at same time, thirst, lack of oxygen, fatigue, muscle pain, disorientation. Water may forgive you once, mountains have no forgiveness. Msg me I will tell you more about your questions on uniforms epaulettes and badges from the two videos you saw. In this video the blue badge is about the expertise in Mountain Warfare in High Altitude. This is different than mountains warfare in subtropical dense forest warfare of Eastern India. That is even crazier where venomous tree snakes are gunning after you. LoL

You were wondering about the altitude... A large majority of the tallest mountains/ranges are along Pakistan/India/Nepal/China, K2 and Everest amongst them.

Our Normal Elevation is about sea level but the areas that these heroes of ours are training at is the Northern border of India, The Kashmir and Ladakh region where the average elevation is 10000 feet above sea level and maximum goes to 25000 feet with temperatures as low as -50 celsius and crosswinds. At that altitude it takes around 2-3 weeks to acclimate. The soldiers drills include force feeding soldiers as their metabolism almost dies out and soldiers dont feel hungry. One more point that we are really proud of about our defence forces is that never in our history of 5000 years of our civilization have we attacked or invaded any country. Jai Hind 🇮🇳. I found that doing a lot of physical activity in a gas mask felt a bit similar to just walking slowly on a high mountain trail. A ruck march in MOPP4 might give some idea of the difficulty breathing at altitude. But the low pressure, low oxygen, and cold on a high mountain makes you feel even more miserable than that. At these altitudes, you will have below 90% blood oxygen levels all the time that would send you to the hospital in other circumstances. Then you have to pay attention while the terrain tries to kill you and you have a pounding headache. Fighting a battle in that environment would be something else. But that is what India has done before and is prepared to do again.
There are hundred thousands of Indian Army units perched on the tip of Himalayan ranges... But only specific units are trained and angaged for duty in such place..

Its is brutally harsh there the temperature drops to -50°C to -60°C there and the winds are even faster then 100k/h sometimes...and talking about Indian army its the only army in the world which serves from +55°C to -60°C of temperature variations 🔥.🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Sometimes choppers don't function well at that altitude. Even the best. Because of low density of air. So it's all walk down as you can't use vehicles there.

13000ft height... Helicopters r their but if we able to walk we have to walk.... In indian army we depend very less on technology.. we r trained for most bad situation you can think of.. as we r trained for seachin... Which is 16 to 18000 feet
I am from India and am amazed how professional the mountain warfare training probably because lessons learned in 1962 war with China and on going conflicts with Pakistan and China in mountain areas. These mountains are no joke ( highest in the world ) hats off to their high professional regular training and taking human capacity to the limits!
Our soldiers r trained in every type of battlefield... From desert to mountain to tropical forest, wet lands..
Western battle field is exactly opposite to this one and NE a different ball game
