The nutcracker is such a cute ballet, idk what it's about it, I just smile through the whole thing! Maybe it's the childish charm, the imagination of a child, christmas-time excitement. (:

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Ballet Jorgen does the Nutcracker with Symphony Nova Scotia every year. In their version, Clara is an orphan who goes to boarding school. Before all of her classmates go home for Christmas holidays, they each give her a present. Their Drosselmeyer is the school's janitor. All of the presents relate to one of the dances that come later. Also Clara dances the sugarplum dance.

I like the Royal Ballet's version of Nutcracker, where the spell is broken and the nutcracker doll turns back into Hans-Peter (Drosselmeyer's nephew) at the end. I like their transformation scene too - they have a real tree on a lift, and it's Clara who shrinks as the room grows around her.
Teverell Royal Ballet's version is my favourite💕

Hello Katie! I've been loving your performance commentary videos so far! I know you constantly wonder why a young girl would receive a quote on quote "old man" doll for Christmas, and there is a slight answer to that question. In the original fairytale the ballet is based on The Nutcracker is the cursed apprentice of Herr Drosselmeyer who has the spell of ugliness placed over him. Now the only way to break the curse is if someone loves him for what he is despite his seemingly ugly appearance. Drosselmeyer gives Clara the Nutcracker because he believes that Clara is kindhearted enough to love he nurcracker for what he is. That's what makes Clara special, her kindness and ability to love something that others seem ugly. This is all omitted from the ballet of course for the sake of time but I hope that clears up some of the confusion that you might have!
Jasmine K In my ballet storybook, there is a whole background story about how the guy was turned into the nutcracker. It was the story about princess Pirlipat. I believe he took the curse over from the princess, and became a prince in the end as a reward. But as with all fairytales, there are many versions, not one of them the "ultimate" one.
Yes I know he fairytale as something similar where there is a princess (whom I always thought was named Pattipearl, but there are many different versions) who was originally cursed with ugliness and then the curse was transferred to the Nutcracker because of the machinations of the Mousequeen. I can't honestly recall what the original tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann was in all of it's finer detail, but I remember that it was directly Clara who breaks his curse because of her unconditional love, but like you said, with many fairy tales there are different versions of how the story goes.
Jasmine K I looked it up, and it does has to do with the things you said in your first comment. The spell of ugliness, and being loved despite that. I guess I never read it that way, because I was little and just saw the fairytale aspect.

This was fun and I love the Clara costume entirely, . I learned that so far in ballet we make mistakes and make-up as we go and in the end the,audience dosent know them. I really like how you portray Clara

As someone who goes and sees this EXACT ballet every year, I can say this is one of the best performances I have ever seen from Mobile Ballet. You were an exceptional dancer and really made this show come alive

"You are here, why?" That is so true, I was a party girl, mouse, and gingerbread girl in our studios production. You are a beautiful dancer, and my inspiration to become as amazing as you and all the other dancers that make me so jealous. Also, nearly all the time, I have trouble keeping my shoulders down and pliéing before and after jumps. If you have any tips, I would love to hear them!

Ooooohhhh the Waltz of the Flowers nerves before SPF is REAL. I get the same thing. Every time that music starts to crescendo and speed up, my heart starts racing. Lol. Haven't danced that in about a decade, but I still get that same feeling.
Nutcracker is and always has been my favorite. When I was little I would watch this ballet, or Barbie nutcracker on a loop and it drove my parents nuts🤷🏼♀️

I'm pigeon toed and IT band dominent and the struggle is REAL and hearing you say that you also struggled with it but you got a solo makes me feel more confident

Thank you so much for these videos! I am absolutely in love with ballet and one of my biggest dreams is to watch a real rehearsal of a ballet company. I just love the technical aspect of ballet aswell as, of course, the beauty of it and with your videos you give me the chance to experience it from the persepective of a dancer and I absolutely adore it! This was so cool! I was Clara with the Albany Berkshire Ballet in 2016 and it was an amazing experience and it was really cool to see another version of it

Hi, Katie! I was wandering could you help me with hops in arabesque? My leg is really low on those and it often bounces up and down. Do you have any tips? Btw I love your videos, they're extremely helpful, entertaining, and creative!❤️❤️
Thank you! Most people struggle with hops in arabesque - think of reaching that leg so far behind you that it touches the opposite wall. That will give you a more solid position. You can also think of it as if your leg is pulling you back. Try that!

This is so cool! I love baby Katie. I watch ballet videos even though I'm in skate... But honestly, doing ballet moves helps a lot! Any tips on how I can get my arabesque or penche higher? It helps a lot for needles, scorpions, and things like that. Anyway, I love these videos! Your commentary is golden xD

What made you desire to try to join NYCB?
My version has a mouse queen, Clara tells the story, and we have no madame ginger. So Clara does a dance with 20+ polichinelles and it is so cute and fun. And every year the polichinelles who are ages 6-9 manage tovknow their dance better than every other corp. Doesn’t matter what level even the Waltz can’t compete.
Anybody else here wishing they had starting dance earlier so they could be as almost as amazing as Kathryn?

Can I lend the Christmas tree thigh ? That would safe me the whole last - minute - decoration, hopelessly- tangled - christmas - lights and add a nice effect if it grows right when the gift giving starts. And it's easy to store . Just put the carpet right back after new years eve...^^

Most of the time in nonprofessional (edit: ballet schools and conservatories) productions its a mouse queen. I'm a soldier (first year in my schools company performing nutcracker and its my seventh time auditioning....so they always knock you down a level at first even though I've been en pointe for a few years. I'm actually kinda mad they waited so long since every year I always sign up for the extra technique classes and was the only one in my level who did except sixth grade and actually worked at home...)

Have you ever done the rat doll? I was picked to do it this year (which is super exciting since it is my first year with this studio!) and I'm incredibly nervous about it, i just feel like It should be more powerful and doll like (almost more like a machine than a doll) than I am dancing it.
