I have heard a lot of bad things about Joy in the internet like she is arrogant and so on. But listening to her analysis of her life and past, she seems to be very self aware. She is just direct and honest
The problem is that a lot of people can’t handle the truth, even if they know you’re right. I’m very direct and honest, and it gets me in trouble. I’m not a dancer, but still.
I totally agree!! She is very passionate about everything she does and shares it, and many people say that she’s bragging and full of herself. I disagree. She does so many good things! She helped dancers to find a job after they left Russia and Ukraine, she helps poor Russian corps dancers to get pointe shoe sponsors, she helps to promote ballet in Africa. And so on. I really admire her for her passion and hard work.
@@mathildewesendonck7225and to this, hearing her story made it clear that she had to make herself a force in the industry and at her academy since there was that divide between the americans and Russians. This was a fascinating interview. Isabella, I’m very impressed with your ability to allow your guest to speak without feeling the need to interrupt with questions or, worse, inserting a quick anecdote of your own. This is a skill many TV presenters have not figured out yet and I wish they would take lessons from you. Joy seems to be an extremely unusual person with a very adventurous spirit and a desire to help others. You two have many similarities. At the end when you talked about how there are so many different paths a new graduate can take outside of being employed by a company - this is such an important message and is probably quite revolutionary in the ballet world. Wishing you and Joy the very best with your professional plans and personal lives! 🙏🎭🩰🎼
@@roxiehart1 Isabella asked several questions. And Joy was not repeating herself or saying the same thing with different words. Those are cues for the interviewer to ask questions. Joy is just an incredible human being. I like the way she always followed her instinct and passion and couriosity. I think a true artist always have a fire inside that makes him or her strive for more. It's also interesting how open she is about the toxicity in different forms that exist in the ballet world. The insulting diminishing shaming coulture. So old fashioned.
Well done interview! Thank you Isabella for your respect and your support. It's been fun (and painful!) to watch and support my daughter on this ballet journey for the last 27 years! Please continue to share great stories of artists and their journeys... you do a masterful job!
This is so incredibly helpful but most interesting so far @16.30 is the discussion on turnout. I hope we get to do this turn out preparation on the summer intensive. This technique for improving turnout is new to me. Roll on August!
I used to watch Joy's vlogs when she was with the Kremlin, but have not kept up with what she's been doing since. So fascinating to hear her reflect on her past experiences, and the new elements she's passionate about now!

This is a great interview with so much "Russian knowledge from both of you ... can you expend on the teacher who taught you turn out and how to achieve it. I spend a lot of time explaining it to my students..but ultimately it is up to them to either work with it or not ...but I like to see what else someone says thank you .
I expand A LOT on my platform in my courses such as my turnout course and floor barre classes as well as in my regular classes and intensives. Definitely check it out. It’s not something I can share in a single message ❤️ There’s much to share and learn.
I watched the movie and if the movie is an accurate picture of what she went through my goodness all because she’s not American what does that have to do with anything? It was kind of hard to watch some parts of it.
I am at minute 11 and really enjoying the honesty of both. However, Joy mentioned at minute 11 that it was like the Japanese, then the Koreans and then the Russians, I didn't understand what that referred to..
In France, all ballet classes are free and when you get a job as a ballerina, you become a government worker. Paid well, health insurance, dental etc. They can retire at 42 and become a teacher. Still paid. This ensures they get all the best dancers in the country, without money being a factor. America sucks on so many levels. The end. When I was 13 I had to stop my beloved ballet after 8 years because my parents couldn’t afford to send me to the ballet school I was ready for. I rebelled after that. That was about 1980.
27:25 - That was a surprise! All the motivation goes when people get into a company? 😶Illogical and yet it's something you both noticed. Must have been hard to resist the pressure to follow suit just for a peaceful life. Also, I can't help thinking that the boy who complained about Joy being in his class was feeling a bit threatened. What a shame that Ilya caved in on that one.
I think it’s very understandable. Ballet dancers work so incredibly hard to become a professional, and then they go on to do crazy auditions. When they finally get a secure job contract (like in a Russian company, where you can‘t be fired easily) it must be such a relief, and so they start to relax once they’ve reached their goal
My impression is a bit different, Joy is just very passionate about everything she does and loves to share it. Nothing wrong with that. But I get what you mean 🙂
I'm beginning to understand why many criticize Joy. In this interview, she makes excuses for why nothing worked out for her; every school, every company and every opportunity were the problem. All the teachers are wrong, the system is wrong...no one was good enough for her. She contradicts herself constantly. Russian training was bad so I went to Korea. They hated me so I went to the US. I was embarrassed learning a tendu so I left and went back to Russia. Russia is suddenly great.🙄 Oh. My. Gosh. She's exhausting. She barely let Isabella get a word in. I had to stop listening half-way through because she blames *everyone* for all her unhappiness. She barely lasts two years in any one place. Perhaps her attitude warranted the treatment she received. I know who the ballet mistress is at Boston Ballet. I highly doubt she was rude and set out to embarrass Joy in front of the company about a tendu. She is a bit of a narcissist, isn't she?
I’ll defend Joy here on one point, I don’t mind that she talked so much because ultimately she was invited as a guest to Isabella’s podcast. However, I see what you mean. I was mostly neutral until she said that she would only be in a company again if they gave her the right rank & roles, that made me go hmmmm. I understand that she probably doesn’t want to spend the last few years of her performing career in the corps when she’s done principal roles already, but there are so few dancers that would have the privilege to pick and choose like that…
Sounds as if you're upset she criticized your friend. I didn't hear her blaming anyone for anything. SHIT can and does happen in ballet companies. They are not particularly edifying kind of places.
@@eg-2585 maybe she has earned the right to pick and choose. Or maybe she just been extraordinarily lucky. More than likely a combination of both. Good for her, she doesn't have to take a job she'd hate, and gratefully eat the crap directors regularly dish out.

"I'm not political" is the go-to head-in-the-sand defense for Russians who are afraid of speaking their mind about Putin's murderous regime - though in Joy's case, she said a lot of embarrassingly obsequious things about him in public, in the past, that I sincerely hope she now privately regrets. Olga Smirnova is a good example of a ballet star who left, and has been much more outspoken, on the right side of history.
@ emilycheeger4029 I don't think history has spoken just yet. And do you know who gets to write history???? The winners. And that will not be the side you seem to think it will. Nor should it be. From an American not afraid to speak her mind.

And - yes - she is losing her shape, technique dancing in HET because as a real star of Bolshoi she needs a bigger repertoire and should dance more and more.
