Hi Andrew. Any particular videos on how to use Discovery 2 non CDL?
I "grew up" in these old Landy's in Walvisbaai Namibia - literally from birth - my Dad was in the SAP by then and these were best on the sand, because the FORD F150 was too heavy and would "bury" itself in the sand and then overheated trying to get out whereas the Landy would drive on top of the sand because it was só much lighter - Kudos to that aluminium bodywork Land Rover!

Much cheer Andrew, I bought a (white with blue decals) V8 County in 1992. A fondness nurtured by learning to drive, as a ten year old, in a Series 1. Loved it and have cherished memories of quick trips on road and adventures off, gee it was good to drive... But the fuel economy proved too hard to live with. Bought an 80 series diesel. Still have it; after twenty two years I think its a keeper! All the very best for 2019...
I once lost my centre lock in a 2 door Range Rover, caused by a split vacuum hose. It unfortunately resulted in a 2 hour self done recovery, simply due to a wet grassy slope. Your explanation is spot on.
i got stranded 2 feet from dry ground by Jeep's damned axle disconnect. a Ford towed me two feet to freedom that day.
Everyone loves their first Girl (truck and actual girl). Mine was a Suzuki Samurai (Jimny). Plenty of Jeeps and a Toyota's and now I have a 96' Land Rover Discovery Series I and I absolutely love it. Like any great girl in your life she'll drive you crazy and take your money but at the end of the day your happy as hell she's with you.
Anyone that owns a defender and doesn't understand the center diff should have it confiscated on the spot.
A couple of years ago I came for the Defender videos, stayed for the content! Look forward to Andrew testing the new Defender coming sometime in the future! (yes, that`s a request)😀

The issue you discuss at 6:20 can easily be fixed by applying a small amount of brake while driving. It fakes out the open diff into sending drive to the wheel with traction by braking the spinning wheel.
Pretty simple.

I have very much enjoyed your youtube videos, inspirational both in content and entertainment. Never been the biggest Landy fan (though for some strange reason might be buying one soon) but did go on the press launch for the V8 90 way back when. What made the biggest impression on me was the superb lunch laid on by Land Rover...
Excited for the Gelandewagen video, I find there are few and far in between videos for them and yours should prove interesting!
I found it quite amusing on my permanent 4WD 80 series landcruiser , jack up 1 front wheel and you cant drive it off the jack haha. But once the transfer is locked and with a rear locker it crawls anywhere! Love your videos mate .

@@artmallory970 - yes, and the Russian Zar was and the Dutch house too, the Spanish, etc. Luckily I am Austrian:-) So, you suggest Land Rovers are essentially German cars? Maybe.
@@ensatlantic who said anything about land rovers being German? I said the aristocracy, that ugly poh-faced 'queen' is 1/4 German her mother Victoria is 1/2 German & that phil was born in Greece to all German ancestry…
@@artmallory970 I know and don't envy them. They live in a golden cage and will never be able to go on a safari on their own camping in the wild.
Andrew I'm a huge fan. Wanted to give an opinion, the differential that Rover runs is a Borg Warner. The original version was a US military spec design that Kaiser adapted for the Wagoneer and was in production until 1979/80 as the Bw 1305 and BW 1339. So on a technicality the Jeep Wagoneer was the first full time four wheel drive SUV

Hi Andrew It is a privilege to drive a landy, I myself am a huge land rover defender fanatic have been since the age of 5 I'm now 19 my dad owns two land rovers an 1996 300tdi 90 defender pickup and a discovery 4 V8. Regards from South Africa. Huge fan of your documentaries.

Hi Andrew thanks for the video and share center diff lock is all important...... I have a 2016 model pajero with central diff lock as well. Always use it here in the sand dunes of abu dhabi....unfortunately I don't have the rear diff lock in my model....btw I remember watching another one of your videos where you said you didn't like Mitsubishi super select system because of the 2wd option vs permanent 4wd. Would love to hear your opinion on that again when you have time..... I use the 4h only in the rare event of a rainy day and on light dirt roads, 4h with locked center diff is great for sand dune work. I have used the traction control on my vehicle in conjunction with 4 low and cent diff locked to get myself unstuck a couple of times. Traction control is a must have

A center lock is really critical for real off road driving, but I think a full time 4wd with limit slip is the biz. My 80 series is a viscous coupling and its pretty good...not great...but pretty good, it would have certainly gone over that rock that you used to hang up the defender but it would have complained about it. The Torsen T3 in the current model toyota's (In my GX470) is freaking magic. No its not locked (until you tell it to) but for all non-serious driving its all the best bits of both locked and unlocked 4wd. You still get full 4 channel ABS and incredible loose road performance with it unlocked and you don't get terminal plow and interaxle bind like locked. I still lock it when needed, but I find my self locking it up way less than the 80.

I believe diesel engines in 110's at the time were called '200-TDi + 300-TDi'. Both essentially the same engine a 2.5L inline 4cyl, but with the 300-TDi (>1994) they improved the torque for a smoother power band. (That's for AUS)

You wouldn't be surprised how many mining trucks roll over because they didn't lock the diff and they span out on the dirt going to fast chasing the sunset.
People rant about these new cars with traction control and automated off-road gear, but hey you don't see many people roll over in the new Prados, especially when they have the whole family in the back
what is the deal with "Mining Trucks"??? are they the end all do all of on and off road vehicles as designated by some alphabet agency?
so the axle diffs are open,and the center diff can be open or locked? i drive a Jeep and found best for teh area i live to be a limited slip rear and a selectable locker in front.if engaged, the best you get is 4x4 and worst is 4x3 .i guess a lock rite can give 3 wheel drive too, with one open and one LR installed.and lets not forget, for years my off road vehicle was a 1964 VW Beetle. a better driver nets better results, but we should be thanksful so many traction aids are out there for a huge variety of vehicles.
I talked to someone who worked on early Land Rovers and he said they weren't as friendly to work on as, for example, an American pickup. There wasn't as much space in the transmission housing and mounting screws for the shifter plate would intrude.
I have a prado 95 series and when the road is wet and slippery the full time "4WD" is handy cause you dont have to worry about spinning out.
"Auto" mode (full-time 4wd/AWD) in my 98 Ford Explorer saved me from black ice one night. Did pretty well on loose dirt, too.

Hello Andrew, I recently purchased a 1989 white V8 Land Rover 110 from South Africa and had it shipped to Seattle Washington. I’m curious if possibly it was yours. Do you remember the vin number by any chance? Kind Regards Jim
Blue cloth seats, white wheel arches. No angular decals in the front doors. It had a back fender fuel tank. The bull bar is also unusual, as it was a lightweight type as used by the Botswana Defence force, and not available in the shops. This makes it unique. If you reply yes, I'll go digging for the VIN. If it is, I might do a story on it.
I had a restoration done on it before being shipped to the US. I’ll attach a before and after photo of it. It did have a bull bar on it but not sure if the one your speaking of. I had it restored as a homage to The Heritage Edition.

Good question. The One-Ten was far more comfortable. By quite a large measure.

A mate of mine had a South African built , or was that assembled , Landrover Defender 110 with a 6 cylinder factory fitted BMW engine , did you ever come across one of those .?
Yes. Unique and now good ones are worth a lot.
I have a 1997 2.8i 110 Station Wagon,it has the M52 BMW 2.8i Straight 6 engine,excellent and has proved to be very strong,...a little thirsty she is though...I believe only about 1000 of these were made.

2.5td, 200tdi and 300tdi?

Td1 was the 100, Td2 was the 200, etc.

Fingers crossed that Land Rover dosent stuff up the new defender.
Depends what you man by 'stuff up'. Good off road, it will be. Good handling, it will be. Practical, it will probably be. Simple and good for overlanding, I bet it won't be even remotely suitable. They will make it too electronic, too complex and the wheels will be too big, with tyres that have a low-ish profile. Just my guess.
@@4xoverland Depends what you mean by overlanding. Some in Land Rover think that means towing a 20foot caravan along a sealed expressway with a hot takeaway cafe latte in your drink holder. We'll find out soon enough.
It is already buggered.
IFS suspension front and back, therefore it will need electronic assistance to make it capable offroad.
I am betting that its underpinnings will be based on the LR3/4/5 which will mean it will be very capable offroad, but almost impossible to keep it serviceable after the warranty runs out.
Just buy an old Defender. Better reliability and a better long-term investment.
Land Rover no longer build off road vehicles only 4x4s ! So sad, it was the Defender that gave the whole product range credibility. I’ve had to defect to Toyota after almost 40 years of utility Land Rovers.
Question: What is the difference between Land Rover and Range Rover? Why the two names?
There was a car company called Rover. In 1948 they built a utilitarian 4wd and called it a Land Rover. 20 years later they started making a more refined 4wd and needed a new name for it so they called it a Range Rover. Now they make more vehicles so the brand is called Land Rover and they make vehicles called Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Etc.

TD1, TD2, TD3..... Being a offrooad "professional" and defender driver making videos on that vehicle.... And then don't know how the versions have been called. And all that fuss about the center diff-lock. It is a 4x4 and yes you can lock it between front and rear - then it is exactly like any hilux or LC.
