    Here is the most beautiful car ever created (don’t argue with me now!). It’s the Range Rover Classic, the first model off the production line. It’s my birthday and for a treat I took a suffix-A (first production run, just like my old one, and a far cry from the Range Rover Sport) Range Rover for a trip around beautiful Wales. A bit self-indulgent maybe, but it was my birthday!

    In December 2018 I purchased a 1989 RRC 3.5 V8 and despite all the neigh sayers, it has been remarkably faultless since. Besides my Triumph Speed Triple 955, it is my everyday transport and has done all sorts of tasks, not least help me move from London to Ireland. It has ferried the old dogs to the vets, the obligatory (and numerous) trips to the rubbish dump, towed a trailer several times carrying all sorts from furniture to a one ton bag of concrete and tomorrow it will be used to help some friends move home.
    It is truly the most remarkable car I have ever owned and the only drawback is that it's a martyr to the drink!

    Beautiful video, almost touching. I think everyone has a car that remains in his/her memory for a reason or another. I remember all the ones my father had and thinking of them brings back memories of travels and joyful experiences. I don't know if today there is an offroader comparable to RR Classic; today's Range Rover is such an elite vehicle nobody would - in a distant future - do what you've done here.

    You know, the Range Rover original and the Lada Niva are two examples of superior wheel articulation using coils and solid axles. Both are fantastic off road and similarly comfortable. Our Russian friends know a thing or two about off-road design.

    • @GamingAmbienceLive
      @GamingAmbienceLive 7 років тому +2

      Trust me, Lada sucks ass, the only good examples of lada were the ones sold overseas with air conditioners, the crap they had in russia was _crap de la crap_ of cars

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  7 років тому +3

      Lada Niva had good off road performance but everything, and I mean everything was truly terrible in every possible way. Russians know a lot about off road design and nothing about anything else. The engine was terrible. The seats cannot really be classed as seats. The heater! In Russian at minus a zillion and the heater was about as effective as two candles in a box.

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  7 років тому +2

      crap del a crap of cars. I agree. And yet more Nivas were made than Land Rovers and Land Cruisers combined.

    • @adelarsen9776
      @adelarsen9776 7 років тому +1

      4xOverland Russians made good traktors with coil spring suspension too.
      Do you know how to double the price of a Lada Niva ? Fill the tank with petrol.
      We can all joke and play however the little Niva Lada got through some tough spots.
      And what of Russian trucks like Ural, Kamov and many others ?
      CZ Tatra and Russian Trucks set the bench mark for tough off road trucks.
      The Russians are our friends :-)
      Early Rangies were great and so the little Lada Niva was also capable.
      I'm not one-eyed. If I was I would just scream Landcruiser to everyone - of which I have 3.

      4xOverland in soviet union if you were a communist you could have a better job, and better connections, with connections came stealing, bribes, instead of giving 10lbs of sugar for a batch of cakes they gave 7lbs, then sold the 3lbs type of thing, this is why soviet union fell apart there was no control, so a lot of people who were stealing, could afford to buy a car, and finally there simply was nothing else to get, if you wanted an offroader there was only that option

    Just discover your channel and I am simply delighted. I had a 3,5L, 155hp ,V8 much much later. In a country, Cape Verde Islands, where you would not find a single spare for it (nor for most part of vehicles). That sensation of sitting in an aquarium, with an incomparable visibility, that music of the V8 ( very often in mine a V7) and the challenge of being prepared to fix something at any time. No doubt, the most amazing vehicle I had!

    Pure nostalgia.My dad was an agriculture specialist working in Nigeria, he had a white one in 1973 and later a locally assembled Tuscan blue in 1978, such was my passion from those magic years that I became a technician and worked for Land Rover from 1994-2012 over two continents.Just the sight of a standard Range Rover brought immense delight, it allmost made time stand still, a truly timeless work of engineering and design.No wonder it was exibited at the Louvre museum in Paris as a model of contemporary art.

    How right you are about the most beautiful vehicle ever. Surprised you didn't mention the driving position/visibility. That is my favorite thing about this vehicle, and I have NEVER driven a vehicle that got it as right as this one did. It's disappointing that more recent range rovers have lost any connection to that commanding driving position. Do you agree?

    Andrew, just to say: the very first to endure "the panamerican highway" were 3 brazilians, starting at Rio de Janeiro in 1928, and arriving in USA in 1938! They were welcomed buy FD Roosevelt and Henry Ford. Ok, they did the Darien demounting their cars and going by boats. They did NOT put the V8 engine in it because they were genius!
    The Range was fit with the Buick V8 because Rover had no other better option!! We are talking oil crises a year later. EVEN the US big 3 make their trucks fit an Diesel engine. Rover had none that would drive the Range adequate.
    Dodge at the time (still in development) had no Diesel engine as well, so they bought one from Cummins. Same for Ford with their International Diesel.
    As this was an upper class vehicle even the 2.5 VM Diesel, later, was not adequate!
    And last: The same repeated later with Range Rover when an V8 Diesel would have been the perfekt Option in the 2000. Remember: Mercedes had a V8 Diesel, Audi as well the US anyway...

    Jeep Grand Wagoneer is arguably up there on the fashion statement. Jeep may have been later coming to t, but it dated back to the early 60s. Anyways love the Range Rover!

      Jeep certainly was not "later coming to t"; first SUV was probably the Willys Station Wagon of the late 40s. The Wagoneer (power steering, automatic transmission, air conditioning) certainly the first "luxury SUV" launched in 1962! Respect to the RR though, for its innovative suspension system, providing brilliant off-road ability.

    Happy birthday Andrew. Great video. I owned a 4.2 Range Rover Classic LSE. To this day it is the best car I ever had.

    Happy Birthday from Poland. I'm the owner of Discovery 300TDi form 94' and I use it
    as a car for special occasions. This video encourages me to do so, because I'm
    not the only one. This car in Poland has a very rough times due to a fact that
    it is used as a toy, and your video showed me that there are a few of us that
    will kept those cars alive. And I thank you for that.

    I feel the Jeep Wagoneer (is that howyou spell that?) slipped Andrew's mind in this video. Don't get me wrong, I adore the Range Rover, that only reason I don't own one is because in Australia (Victoria at least) you have to wait a few years after getting your license to be allowed to drive a V8. But, I know that while the Range Rover cemented the idea of the SUV, it was the Jeep that started it

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  7 років тому

      It did not slip my mind. The RR started it because owning one became fashionable. That was never the case with the Wagoneer, not even in the US.

    I can sympathise with your passion for this Classic 4WD, despite much derision from my partner I have owned a Jeep Cherokee since 2010, not a perfect vehicle but perfect for me :)
    Happy Birthday fella! :D

    Such an iconic car. I could really relate to when you mentioned your maintenance diary. I own a 2004 D2 v8 Discovery and keep a very detailed diary of all the work i do on it. It is being set up for short trips around western Australia (we are based in Bunbury). A little like you have mentioned, I could have easily bought a hilux.. but once you get bitten by the Rover bug, the obsession and care for these cars takes on a life of its own!

    I love this very much, but I can't help but point out that Britain was a bit beyond post-war austerity by the early 70s! We were well into "managed decline," union militancy and Northern Ireland by then! But still had a pretty good car industry - for a while.

    Oh man your face and enjoyment of the vehicle are amazing! I'm lucky enough to own a D2 as my first vehicle I dreamed of owning one since I was younger and lucky enough to have one even if I'm spending alot of time and money here and there under the hood or on upgrades it brings me joy every time I start her up! Land Rover really is the happiest place to be.
