Replacing your Timing Belt is a 1:0 scenario, meaning that if you do it wrong you might need to face extreme repairs. Don't do this if you are not familiar with this kind of work. In this case, I did some mistakes according to some viewers.
1:55 - start of replacement
In this video we are installing a new waterpump, timing belt and last but not least the v-belt. For the first two we will need a special tool set suitable for that very engine, the fca 1.4 tb multiair. You can get this tool set anywhere you want online. If you enjoyed this vide be sure to hit that like button and subscribe to my channel for more content like this!

It's best to apply the crank and cam locking tools when the belt is attached. Then you don't need to individually go and align each of them together saving some time and effort. Once the crank lines up the cam will be done too.
You also run the risk of bending a valve if the crank is at top dead centre (it should be 90 degrees from TDC for this job, pistons halfway down the bore).
If you feel any resistance to turning that can over, STOP! Dont force it or you'll be removing the head to replace valves...
thanks! I was wondering the same thing...turn crankshaft to align.
When the belt is broken what will use to put new timing belt?
@@fierakuitali9313 It would usually be a head off job for that on the risk of bent valves. But if not. Assure the valves are in a relatively high position to the pistons then turn the crank to TDC afterwards. Plugs out to ease the strength of the compression stroke.
Sir, I followed the process, 1- pistons lined equally 2-cam locked 3 loosen tensioner 5 loosen cam wheel, then changed the belts afterwards , backwards the steps..engine started but stopped in 4 seconds then never started,no noise no apnormal sounds and not starting again, what can be the expected problem??
You missed an important step - the cam pulley bolt should be loosened to allow the pulley to rotate on the cam. This ensure the belt is properly tensioned - if you dont, the tensioner cannot pull on the belt on the water pump side and you could potentially end up with a loose belt.
DO NOT use the cam locking tool to hold the cam when you undo the bolt, you must brace the pulley directly. The tool will break the camshaft otherwise...
As soon as I can find where to buy or borrow the locking tools I am doing this job on my Mito.
Thanks for having the balls to do this and show us, much appreciated.
I have watched many videos regarding how to change the timing belt. But the way you explain is outstanding excellent thanks for sharing your knowledge I really appreciate
Thanks! I'll always learn more with time so be aware of the other comments under this video, since some parts should've been done differently

My MiTo QV got proper service at Alfa workshop, but great job man! Love this car, love how it looks, sounds, feeling from them. 🍀
Good info with the couple of additions here in the comments. I guess I would manage this... looking into getting a MiTo. For the second time 😃
Great video, exactly what I needed to know.
Good job , I always use the ring end of the spanner though, saves some skin .
You should also clean before reassembly. You put the tensioner on over oil and dirt - that runs the risk of it coming loose later and not being perfectly aligned.
Its a rule for all car work - clean everything before reassembly.
Shouldnt you lock the crankshaft first before removing the belt. As I understand it, when in the locked position all the pistons are halfway down the bores. If you remove the belt first you are at risk of hitting a piston with the valves.
Great job n Awesome vid..thanks*****
Excellent I own a mito 2nd cam belt coming up in December lovely car thou….
useful video mate 😊
First off,......You are supposed to loosen the cam pulley before you tighten the tensioner, then after it is installed, and retightened you rotate the engine two revolutions and recheck the tensioner tabs to make sure they are still aligned. As you can clearly see in the video as you are buttoning things up, yours are no longer aligned. Yo may want to revisit this job.
before failure.
Just looking at 22.20 in the video and it looks like the cam belt tensioner is no longer at the correct tension? the marks no longer line up like before, it looks like it may have loosened (turned backwards) when you tightened the bolt?
Welcome back !!!! Try to straight pipe your MiTo . I done it and it is sound amazing 😉
Living in Germany so there's that haha...
that was an excellent video . I wonder if the cheap tools are just as good. Man, your English is really good you speak American English . Keep the awesome videos up
Thanks! Although I made a terrible mistake like the other comments said. Good thing I didn't break anything
Thx for documenting the process, but yes, like people said you shouldn't have moved the camshaft without the belt attached, from what i can see the tools adjust the timming themselves but its better to be safe than sorry. I don't have the tools and i'm probably gonna do it without them, mine is a Fiat Bravo T-Jet, same engine but the head is different due to the MultiAir system, from the outside, it looks the same. Also, be carefull with that crap ton of sealant, you do not want it to clog the pump neither a coolant channel inside the engine, you used way too much.
Kerlek segíts, Hogy lehet szerszám nélkül megcsinalni?.. Nekem is bravo 1.4 t-jet van
Great job!
Is the same that 1.4T 155?
Great video; very helpful and I am going to do this in the coming weekend.
Just another question: have you ever swapped out the v-belt runner/tensioner? I cannot seem to find anything on YT.
Thanks!
Never swapped it, but guess it isn't that hard to do.
Thanks for informative video. How much a car repair shop will take for changing the timing belt + water pump in Germany? In Finland, the fee is about 500 to 580 euros and I think that is a robbery. I finally found one garage which made it just under 300 euros. I have had year 2013 Mito QV over three years with no major problems, 70 thousand kilometers driven by me (120 thousand altogether). I have changed bearings for rear wheels and bearings to front suspension, the bearing is located above front coil spring.
good
👍🏻
God I wish I had those tools last weekend when I replaced the timing belt on my 500 Multiair
can you change the timing belt without those tools? i need to change it but i dont have those tools
Cant you just mark the positions of the pulleys and be careful not to move them? It seems like extra work to remove the upper intake, bracket, vacuum pump, then install this tool, etc
After replacement timing belt my engine management light keeps flashing and one triangle light as well i put scan tool P0016 code and i changed the cam n crank both sensors but problem still there engine runs fine but no power
Hi . I have an error code P0340 on this engine. where is the camshaft sensor located?
Excellent work !! Tell me more about symptoms of multiair problem, rough engine running, engine is running on only 3 cylinders ?
Thanks! So my Engine was running on 2 cylinders 3 or 4 times in total. Always happened when i didn't drive the Mito for a couple of days. The Car started normally and after 2 minutes the Check Engine light turned on, resulting in 2 cylinders to misfire. Turned the Car off and on again, and everything was fine again.
Happened once every one or two weeks. The Alfa shop i went to deleted the error code once but that didn't solve it.
Additionaly i discovered oil on one of the spark plugs, but the other three seemed dry so that couldn't be it.
However in my next video i'll show how to exchange the MultiAir Microfilter (+ valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals), and since then that issue never showed up again👍
@@itsaboutcarsyt can't wait to see, keep up the good work
@@postaraco i had this problem also. i found that changing th o2 sensor fixed the misfire
@@demodansoundwavemusic9677which error you had? After oil change(correct oil C3 and fiat S2 specs) I had P1061, uniair actuator on cylinder one, connect on Alfa obd diagnostics, eras error and everything was O.K after that, car always worked normal on 4 cylinders. Few days later again same error, same procedure, diagnostics erased error, engine works fine. I have no symptoms of typical mair module failure. Saprak plugs ok, coils ok, for now everything looks ok, modul is second series, not first which had fault.
Shouldnt you lock the crankshaft before u took the belt off? Isnt that the puropse of that tool? :P
Hello, dear friend, can I ask you a question?
I join those who said that first you lock the crank and only after you take out the belt. the rest is fine and helpful. Only one question . The vacuum pump gasket should not be replaced???
Is worth doing for sure while you are at it, however I didn't because I simply didn't think about it at the time
Why is it so important to lock the crankshaft and camshaft? Cant you just mark the positions with a marker or something and make sure they don’t move? I think I will order the tools just in case and try to do it without removing the vacuum pump to save some time.
Hi , You need to Place the engine on TDC , and you Have to place both the cam and crank locks on prior to belt removal, in order to ensure that The crank and Cam are out of Sync. And it's an Absolute No NO ! to move the camshaft once the belt was removed!
Domingos, on this engine when the crankshaft tool is in place and locked, all pistons are mid travel and not on TDC. The only thing I would do differently than the video is locking the crankshaft and then rotate the camshaft and lock it.
I totally agree I would not do this I'm surprised it runs

@@istdochegal2425 Kein Problem!! Wo kann man das da entnehmen? Ich hatte es bisher nur überflogen
Hey there, American over here. We have the multiair 1.4 non turbo for the fiats. I was wondering if this was roughly the same process for changing the belt? If so, do you need that specific cam holder or can you use something like the snap on or similar timing belt service kit
I guess it's almost the same, but can't be sure because never worked on an engine like yours tbh
@@itsaboutcarsyt i gotcha. But your particular alfa, is that the 1.4L, non turbo multiair from Chrysler?
@@brandonsawh2283 there is a 1.4 8v and 16v model both with a 1368 cm³ non turbo engine. I believe that Chrysler built all variants of the 1.4 since 2009 (fiat 500, dodge dart, Alfa MiTo, etc).
Maybe u can look up your engine code and compare it with the Alfa Mito's
@@itsaboutcarsyt yes sir absolutely and thank you! That is a big big help!
@@brandonsawh2283 always interested in stuff like that as well so no problem!
Hi, did you have by problems with starting the car after doing this?
car runs just fine :)
Hey! Great video! From where did you get the torque specs?
Thanks! It's actually really hard to find any specs. I got them from an Abarth Forum, where they uploaded the specs of a 595 Abarth with the same engine.
@@itsaboutcarsyt Thanks!
One more thing, where do you place the jack stands and elevation jack on the car? I don't like to use the pinch weld and I can't find another obvious place to use...
Uuuhh honestly my Mito is getting uglier every time i put jacks under it... The pinch welds are not really capable of the cars weight but i don't see any other places either. Maybe i'll analyse the possible locations for jacks in a seperate video, might be a good idea.
Before remove tensioner must install timming tools !! Don't turn camshaft or crankshaft without timming belt !!🤔🙄🤔🙄
ciao sbaglio o le scritte sulla cinghia devono essere rivolte verso l'esterno .......
Is the tjet 199A8000 the same timing kit?
yep
Do you know where I can get these locking tools?
Got mine on Amazon I believe. eBay is also an option. Just search for cam shaft lock tool 1.4 multiair
how much km do you change it?
around 120k km but i recommend checking from 80k on. I did it at 90k
@@itsaboutcarsyt ok nice, mine is only 55000, will do it at 80 000
my only complaint is why you wear white shirt?

Niiiiiceeee cock eh car bro
YOU DID EVERYTHING BACKWARDS FIRST BLOCK THE CRANKSHAFT AND THEN THE CAMSHAFT SURE YOU BEND THE VALVE OR HIT THE PISTONS 👎
Sir, I followed the process, 1- pistons lined equally 2-cam locked 3 loosen tensioner 5 loosen cam wheel, then changed the belts afterwards , backwards the steps..engine started but stopped in 4 seconds then never started,no noise no apnormal sounds and not starting again, do have comment or advise???
Locked the cam and the crank? Difficult to say from here... Hope you'll have it fixed soon
In doubt let some experienced take a look
