I’m a professional video editor who’s going to roast the editing and storytelling of MrBeast’s 40 minute video.
So I’ve worked for Logan Paul, Michelle Khare and even MrBeast and on this channel I do edit breakdowns of creators, but for the past 4 years I’ve blamed MrBeast for ruining UA-cam with “Retention Editing”
I never understood it, thought it was awful simply because it truly “bad storytelling” and at one point he agreed, which is why we worked together on some videos, but he stayed the course on retention editing…until now?
Jimmy posted a 40-minute video that was preluded with tweets claiming he’s ending what he calls “ADHD content” and more storytelling focused and….he, hehehe, Jimmy, I don’t believe you, but, I do love to be proved wrong.
So I’m going this watch the entirety of the Ages 1 - 100 Decide Who Wins $250,000 video and roast and edit breakdown its storytelling and editing, to find out if Jimmy is finally abandoning awful over editing and becoming a good storyteller…

I am going to be 100% honest I would sign up for your class but the price is just too steep I'd prefer to support you for good content and edutainment so I'll like and subscribe!
I love the consistent hate on vine booms
I know right? I laughed so hard during those moments 😂
..........
Your not the only one
To me it feels like fun humor with the sound effect.
Arent these audio's also just there because people recognize the sound, not as much because it's emphasizing something, but because even the sound itself has gotten its own meaning. Which fuels into the mainstream audience.
I don't think the creator of the vine boom sfx is safe anymore.
Uh oh 😂
...
8:10 In Jimmy’s defense when there’s 200 million people watching, at least a couple million of the audience is guaranteed to be dumb
agree
And most of them are very young
I thought the same thing
Plus i didnt even notice or remember the arrow
@@SOrionOgun Yeah neither did i too
Absolutely insane that you're giving this information out for free. Thank you Hillier, seriously, thank you.

The course is definitely worth getting, too. I know he doesn’t think so but I think he would have done well editing traditional tv and film.

wow wow, we NEED more of these roasting videos. This was so fun to watch man.
Should he roast Jesse James West next? He may be a bodybuilding influencer but he’s also a storyteller
@@OriginalMasterNAI Honestly, I would love to see that! I really enjoy his videos because of his storytelling. I am always hooked without realizing
bump
There’s a fine line between nit picking and good notes. These were all good notes! (vine boom)
😂
The people complaining about him “overanalysing” don’t understand that good editing is not noticed but felt. The average viewer may not care about small details but the accumulation of all these small details is what manipulates the viewer’s feelings and differentiates good from great. He’s also using Mr Beast as an example to teach about editing and story-telling in general which can be applied to more than just UA-cam videos. And for those saying it’s “Just a UA-cam video” cut this platform some slack, it has been a platform for so many artists. UA-cam doesn’t mean amateur anymore, just look at how much money Mr Beast is spending and earning from these vids.
That's facts right there! I 100% agree!
phenomenal video. i was very impressed with this on jimmy's end, and as always, you put into perspective why that is in an entertaining way. you're making waves, man. i think your advice and expertise is finally gonna change youtube for the better, and i'm so excited to witness that.
just one thing, bro. i do think the course plugging was a bit much. comedy comes in threes, and i think enjoyability does as well. would've been fine that many times, but ironically like the vine booms, i was just thinking "alright man i get it" haha. i'm sure the course is great though and as a longtime viewer, i'll definitely be purchasing it as soon as i get the chance.
hope you aren't afraid to make your videos longer like this one, too! this was awesome
9:00 i actually thought the vine boom was really funny
His hatred towards it was even funnier lol
@@OriginalMasterNAI He took a solid 2 or 3 minute chunk to dunk on it
he hates the vine boom sound😆i liked it too tho
Agreed, theres something so recognizably funny about the vine boom, that it almost emphasizes the ridiculousness of him asking questions to a one year old.
@@ororomunroe8170not to mention a lot of UA-camrs still uses the vine boom today
When it comes to the “arrow to the red line” point, I do agree with you that in a lot of cases there is no need for the arrow. But with the scale of how many viewers Jimmy has, and with the numerous people with color blindness that might not get pulled in by the color itself, I think it’s understandable and he’s just making the video a bit more accessible to people with disabilities without trying to take away from the rest of the typical viewers.
.............
@@badboys.3 Why do you keep responding like this to comments, do you show any appreciation?
@@W1gg13 I'm not sure if he was trying to get likes or what.
the way you pick up on the tiniest mistakes is so impressive haha, great video! :)
i get your point about not making the audience feel dumb with the arrow pointing to the red line, but most people are relatively dumb, lol. I don't feel like I'm watching something that insults my intelligence. If I get it already I ignore it, but if I didn't, it might help.
100% agree with you
Yeah and to be honest, I didn’t even noticed that arrow 😂
As someone who's pretty dumb, I agree. The arrow is there to tell me "Hey buddy, see that red line? You already noticed, that. This arrow is to remind you that you understood the concept. I'm so happy for you little fella!"
@@smileychess 😂, it helped me the same way heh heh
Agreed
Literally What We All WAITED For!
Always inspiring!! Thankyou for speaking up for the editors
This was so amazing Hayden. One of the best breakdowns on your channel but more importantly, the editing on this roast is incredible. I really like all the graphics you used to showcase the audio waves and cuts, etc… I fkn love you bro 🙌
Let it be put on the record... You laughed at a vine boom!!! 58:19
And then he noticed it. lol 58:50 Literally his hatred towards the vine booms are so funny. 😂
If jimmy genuinely starts focusing and vocalizing this form of video editing and story telling, and sits on this, makes it clear how this type of content can be enjoyable,
with the influence he has on the industry and the community, we might actually see new creators change their minds, and hopefully audiences too
This was a fantastic breakdown, thank you!
The reversal shot for the 250k briefcase is so valid
It would always be hard to balance great storytelling with style. Those fonts, vine boom sound effects, loud intros, those are his style. It doesn't enhance the storytelling aspect but it's him.
I totally agree
I was surprised Hayden told him to find a different font; ironically, he told us to have our own font which literally that was MrBeast’s own font
.........
@@OriginalMasterNAIyes changing the font would be a really bad idea
@@MRJMXHD Another funny thing is, in the ZHC roast video, ZHC used the exact same font and Hayden never says anything bad about it.
I don't think anyone is analyzing their UA-cam videos this much
I believe that this type of long video is extremely valuable. Really going along your thought process and in the context of a UA-cam video, not to diss your movie analyses, which are great, but personally not as relevant to most people here. Thank you for the video, it was awesome, Hayden!
This video is one of the most inspiring videos I've ever watched, I've learned a lot, every moment (good or bad in the MrBeast's video) makes a lot more sense when you explained it. It's difficult to choose the exact words when you talk about transmitting emotions in a video, but you've made it pretty clear to understand. Thanks, Hillier, this is your best work so far, no doubt why you put 3 ads of your course, I get it, you also knew this video was going to hit different. Congratulations.
What’s crazy is I think what professional editors hate the most is actually his secret sauce. Vine boom, terrible font. Somehow, makes a billionaire feel normal and like a startup. It’s brilliant and relatable.
Love this video and content Hilliard! Thank you
Tbh, I have no problem with his font and the vine boom. His hatred towards the vine boom made me laugh so hard; I couldn’t stop, but he’s not wrong it’s been overused though. Also the font, what I find funny is he told *us* to have our own font which that’s literally MrBeast’s own font. Also when Hayden roasted ZHC, he used the exact same font and Hayden never said anything about it.
I agree with almost everything he went over in this video too.
The amount of knowledge you have is INSANE! I will be taking notes on ALL of your videos from now on 🤣 So much value in these videos, I love it!!
a whole hour of hilliersmith? oh yeah time to get the notebook
This is extremely helpful and I appreciate when you do long roasts because it is so informative
loved the breakdown learned so much , we would love to see more breakdown/roast videos from MrBeast or other Creators , looking forward to see more of this , hopefully you would make more of these
love you Hayden

I agree! The roasting videos helped out a lot!
the amount of knowledge you put on explaining about the flow and edit, such a masterclass!
You are an amazing emotional story teller and editor🙌
I'm sitting here teary-eyed... I wasn't even tempted to watch the actual Mr. Beast story, but honestly YOUR reaction to HIS video is what got me! Great video!
love you hiller you are the best!!!! waited for so long
The funniest part of this video is Hillier raging at all the vine booms.
Yup 😂
I think the vine boom is relatable to his target audience. Most viewers aren’t editors and wouldn’t realize that. I don’t really see a problem with the arrow, it last 1-2 seconds. Either audience won’t mind or it will give some people clarity. Low risk, higher reward. But the concept of intelligence was great to initiate.
I think this video is a great idea for editors to learn and improve filmmaking but Jimmy is nearly #1 for a reason. UA-cam isn’t about perfection, but connection
mr beast has mastered youtube so it shows while editing is important its subjective
@@ibrar6364 yes
“UA-cam isn’t about perfection, but connection” I like that. Nice man
I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited to watch an hour long video
I can't wait! I need to learn editing and storytelling from you.
Hiller, I want to watch every Mr Beast video with you know. This was such a joy
BRO HOW IS THIS FREE?
I've never seen a video about storytelling as great as this one. I'm 20 mins in and I've learned as much as 8 episodes of The Editing Podcast
The fact that Mrbeasts video after this one is a 10 minute migraine enduser with extremely fast energy. Its kind funny.
😂😂😂😂
Was hoping you were gonna blow up ever fing, mate. Great content 🍻
I kinda wanted 42 to stick until the end🤣Top Tier villan in my opinion, man was so OP😭😂
Not all villains are bad after all! 😉
I really doubt anyone pays attention even subconsciously during the watching experience to that tiny strip of red inbetween the contestants at the start. Bit of an overanalysis there Hayden, no?-using the benefit of the slowed down, in terms of the effect of the analyzed bit on the viewing experience, methinks. Same as the 'if you zoom in you can see from his hand that its CGI' comment. I really doubt anyone (or very few) does that during the watching experience for it to be a valid criticism of the watching experience.
It's overanalysis bias in the same way that VAR in football can make functionally insignificant things seem significant when removed from practical experience in real time and slowed down.
In terms of making a better video, you're definitely right. It is the small things all added up that produce the overall increases in that wonderful thing we call quality.
Agreed I personally like the cgi stuff I don’t care if it’s a a fake or real story . A story is a story
Exactly what I was thinking! I think many designers struggle with this. Overdue stuff, that's unimportant for the casual watching experience and sometimes oversee or prioritize things wrong.
So much value in this, thank you Hillier !
Im so glad you did a mr beast breakdown. No one else makes these and especially not with this detail. Please post more often this is extremely useful and educational.

Love the video, proud of Jimmy's use of "Sound Design" 😂😂
So Jimmy is going to have a tv show. He tried out the 40 minutes to prove to Netflix (or amazon prime i forget) that longer form content can preform well. I am pretty sure he mentions this in the video

But I disagree with the comment on the vine boom sound effect, Jimmy is using it because it is so familiar for his young audience. You can see Ryan Trahan doing this in his videos too with roblox "uhm" sf and he often shows some really popular product like prime or mcdonalds.. General audience likes to see / hear references of what they know for some reason.

You will love it! I promise!
Yees, i waited for that video whole life! 🖤
41:41 you know the editors have done a good job when hillier's that into it
Yup, Hayden is all about emotional experiences.
I'd love to see a re-edited version made your way to see direct scene by scene comparisons. Imagine if UA-cam allowed you to AB test whole videos not just thumbnails.
Though even then, all it would show us is statistically what version is more retentive / popular, not necessarily what is of higher quality.
A lot of the best films made are far less well known than a lot of popular trash
The fact that this amount of value is available at no cost to the general public keeps my hope alive in creators like you! Thank you so much for not locking this behind a paywall! Amazing content as always😃🙌🙌
Ironically, while I was watching this Mr.B video, I thought you'd had a hand in the edit because of the story elements :)
Your not dissing Mr.Beast, your dissing Tareq!
You make some good points, but I also think you need to consider Mr Beast's audience/brand. He's said that part of the reason he doesn't upload in 4k is to maintain a more authentic 'homemade' feel. I would assume the same goes for his choice of font and sound effects - it's what his audience will associate best with. If it was a polished edit to a traditional standard, it wouldn't have the same charm
What video did he say he prefers 1080p instead of 4K and what's the timestamp? Just curious.
this is the best video I've seen so far BUT, we can all do better, THEREFORE, I will definitely act on the lessons and tips shared freely from this video. thanks a lot
The type of content we need
@HillierSmith
Do you usually take more time editing

I really know you a pro with Logan's videos
You are a master Hillier
The ultimate UA-camr dream: Have @HillierSmith roast one of your UA-cam videos.
8:32 he uses the font because it’s known as mrbeast font now, 8:44 the vine boom caught me off guard too 💀
Ironically, he told us to find our own font and clearly that’s MrBeast’s own font. Yeah, I laughed so hard when he was enraged over the vine booms like 6 times(?) now 😂
The way 17 just said womp womp 😭😭😭😭
The thing is, as a successful UA-camr myself with over 10 years of experience and 4 million subscribers I know how peoples minds have started to become more and more obsessed with short form content. I have started becoming a low budget filmmaker in the last 2 years and in that time I've come to an interesting conclusion. Mr. Beast is competing for his viewers time and with him pouring in so much money into his content he would need to hook onto his viewers in a short time frame. long form content has been ruined by TikTok and other social media platforms that focus on just short content. The Pop Culture industry is going downhill fast because no one in Gen Z want to watch a video over 30 seconds long. In order for Mr. Beast to make enough money to justify how much he spends per video, he is forced to create long form content. The only way to grab on to his viewers attention is by making ADHD content and doesn't really have a choice. This whole thing isn't Jimmy's fault it's Gen Z's fault and as a Gen Z myself I can sometimes become bored of long form content and just scroll for hours because of the sheer amount of dopamine getting released in my head. The Gen Z's and Gen Alpha kids all crave this same dopamine but because they're spoiled by Shorts and TikTok, they cannot stay interested long enough. all of this is the same reason movies are bombing now days, is because no one wants to dedicate 2 hours to one "video" when they could watch thousands in the same time frame by scrolling. This in no way is Jimmy's fault and he actually has made people still watch some form of long content even if it is ADHD content.
There's got to be a plugin to detect when the same clip is being used more than once, so the editor can see if the duplication is merited
That vine boom was purposeful, to got Hillier mad lol 🤣🤣 But with this video I noticed that the contrast is so important and so much times we can see that, the sound design, music and cuts can really make the difference! And with this video I learned a lot!
Yeah, I also laughed so hard when Hayden was enraged by the vine booms 😂
@@OriginalMasterNAI Probably that is a type of purposeful "goofy edit" that MrBeast like to use.
