    Corrections/Nuances below*.
The stat that says that Berlin is a net negative for Germany is quite outdated, and it's important to note that many German cities are quite strong, economically, which skews Berlin down more than, let's say, other French cities and Paris.

Sven Marquart has stated in interviews that they pick the guests aiming to create the right blend of people. Each night is supposed to be an unforgettable party, it takes a certain blend of ages, sexualities, nationalities and styles.
Yes, there are some guidelines that will help your chances to get in as stated in the video, but often it comes down to pure chanse.
Like the doorpolicy or not, if you have been in there, you can't deny they do an amazing job in selecting a great crowd. It in not just the young, cool and beautiful. It is not just middle-aged gay men, or only germans, or only tourists. It is all kinds of people.
Since everyone knows they might be turned away, everyone who gets in enters the building with a feeling of euphoria, a feeling of having been selected.
It is all a game of psychology, and it works!
You get in and you feel this amazing rush of exitement that carries you into the party.
I have been to Berghain many times, and that feeling still hits me every time.
Berghain is for those who got in that night. They will experience something amazing, but this magic trick only works if four out of every five people in the line gets rejected.

I went to Berghain a few weeks ago on a recent work trip to Berlin. I'm 33 now, but I've been multiple times since I was 19. As some other posters have said, Berghain is *just* a club, and you can find many spinoffs of it in other cities in the world. What Berghain has that many of the others don't, though, is: scale (it's massive), commitment to aesthetic (you don't find an old East German power plant anywhere anymore), freedom (you can kinda do whatever you want within reason), and originality (it is the remnant of an older era of Berlin and partying that doesn't really exist organically anymore).
The world changes, and so do the meanings of places, but what has remained so impressive about Berghain is its ability to maintain its identity and values in a constantly changing world. It abhors voyeurism and nightlife tourism, and I am fully behind the club's rejection of people who are there for the wrong reasons, even if it means I've been rejected 30% of the time for not being German. Just like the Brooklyn hipster aesthetic has permeated many corners of the globe, so has Berghain/Berlin-style nightlife. It's the CBGBs of this era of techno.
On my most recent visit, I did feel like the crowd was becoming a bit of a parody of itself, but maybe that's just me being 33 instead of 27 (my previous visit there). I still had a great time, but something inside of me felt like the era of Berghain would be soon coming to a close. I feel 5-10 more years.

Techno has gotten really popular recently, similar to how electro and progressive house got really popular and commercialised in the 2010s. So there are a lot of people who jump on the bandwagon without that genuine natural love for the music, and are just not self aware enough to appreciate the way crowds and atmospheres at techno events should be. So yeah, I'd say clubs like this are going to quickly deteriorate in terms of enjoyability for the people who truly love techno and only add positively to the atmosphere of the dancefloor. You see more and more dickheads taking stickers off their cameras to take pictures inside clubs these days, it should result in an instant lifetime ban

As someone who loves the techno scene here, I really appreciate that this comment section is so understanding and didn't immediately judge the club for being "exclusive". There are plenty of great clubs in Berlin and yet so many tourists try to get into Berghain, simply because they want to tick it off their bucket list. That spirit can bring a nervous, judgy and unrelaxed vibe to the club.
If you come to Berlin and are interested in the techno scene, here are some lesser known (outside of Berlin) but great places:
    - RSO: Similar style as Berghain, dark, fast, monotous and meditative
    - Else: Outdoor club with varying genres, great soundsystem and amazing atmosphere
    - Club Ost: More popular among early 20s crowds, also varying genres and mostly good vibes
Most importantly: Don't come when there's a famous DJ, because it will attract tourists, more rejections. Check the DJs out on Soundcloud and follow the sounds you like. And welcome to the scene!

I remember the first time in Berlin I was with a group of 4 other friends and we were all dressed up to go clubbing but none of us even wanted to attempt Berghain out of fear of waiting in line for hour only to be rejected. We asked a local where we should go and after taking one good look at our group he said Berghain with such a confidence that it propelled us to get there.
Long story short we went, queued for what must have been 15 minutes and once we got to the door we all got the sign to go in. Granted we were a mixed sex and mixed race group, and not too flashy but we got in very easily. Needless to say the whole experience was a blast. I left the club about 16 hours later, long after my friends had already left :))
Also probably the greatest feeling is leaving the club during daytime after having experienced one of the most unique nights. Stepping out into the sun and seeing there's about 300 people waiting in line outside truly leaves you speechless.

Had a great night, but had to leave around noon to get my train because of a strike of the Deutsche Bahn :D

I don't know how, but she managed to catch a glimpse of the Lab, and she remembered it vividly.

I’ve had the best nights of my life in laboratory, Berghain, Panorama and the garden. It’s a banging place.
However it’s not the only brilliant club in Berlin. There’s many many other venues where you can have similar experiences. Berghain is special though.
I’m a British Berliner and this video was so well researched it was uncanny. That graphic of Sven is a famous piece of street art in Westberlin that was my phone background for a year.
Also I’ve seen Sven walking around with his mum in Prenzlauer Berg before 😂 😁

Berghain is an epic party. I have been 4 times, on each visit to Berlin, and while the door policy might seem tough, it creates an atmosphere that I have not found at any other club in the world. I have been part of the techno scene since the late 90s, and even as a 40 something man, I never felt out of place at Berghain.

I got to go to Berghain for CTM as a guest of one of the headliners for the festival and had full run of the place more or less. They let us into the club a few hours early for soundcheck and got to meet all the staff and management which was super cool. Gave us access to the green rooms and let us have all the food and drinks from the green rooms we pleased. Was really cool to see beyond what regular patrons who get in are able to see, we also had our own door we got to use to the left of the main door everybody lines up for. We literally got to break all the rules of the line, being foreigners dressed however we wanted and getting to talk to each other in line. A group of about 10 of us all got to go as part of my producer friends rider. Still have the orange stickers they put over my phone cameras even though I don’t even have that phone anymore. It was certainly quite the experience being from the North American west coast rave scene getting that kind of access in such an exclusive club. One of the greatest memories I will ever have

As a Berliner whose been in Berghain a few times I can say that the way Sofie described the experience of standing in line is spot on, but I have a couple of additions/comments: It’s hilarious and completely tru that having a backpack significantly increases ur chances of getting in, the part about the vibe fits too, more than the clothes u wear, Berghain doesn’t have a Dresscode I would say, it’s all vibes, but black docmartens boots are better than white Jordan’s, then again I’m a white, blonde finance bro who doesn’t drink or take drugs so my vibe is not really the vibe😂😂😂. Regardingthe bouncers, yes you pretty much always have Sven there and up to around 5 others, with sometimes some walking around. These 6 bouncers are constantly sifting through the crowd, meaning u need to get ur act straight as soon as ur like 30-50m away from the entrance, they also talk to eachother, funny enough in code, they talk in numbers, like cops giving codes to certain types of behaviors. You should not have your phone out in those last 50m. Also if u don’t have guestlist, don’t get into the guestlist line. When it comes to arriving there there are 3 things I can say: Never really go there expecting to get in, plan another club or maybe 2 to go to if it doesn’t work out, go there after you’ve been to KitKat on a Saturday, meaning u line up at Berghain at around 5/6am on Sunday, by that point the line is tiny. If it isn’t, skip it to the last like 50m. As Hoog mentioned, the line is filled with internationals, who’ve prolly been standing there for hours, they won’t make a fuss and ruin their chance to get in and it’s not worth standing in line for more than 15 min. If someone does make a fuss, ignore him, it will most likely hurt him more than you. Last thing I would say, when you dress for Berghain, don’t be flashy in any sense. Be casual, but Berliny u Kno. As for the club, the location is awesome, it’s huge, spacious, and the music is quite good at times, but more than once or twice, or thrice is not a vibe. The thing with it being open the whole weekend is that on one hand ye u can party all weekend, but on the other hand everyone is fucked up, the vibe is grimy and druggy, the air is stuffy and reeks of piss (mainly because on the ground floor right next to the entrance and main stairwell there are booths where you can piss on people willing to be pissed on), the floors are sticky, the people aren’t really friendly, it’s dark as hell, but in a meh way, and doesn’t really feel all to welcoming. Then again I’m biased because I like clean clubs, good atmosphere, and so on. If you like sex clubs, or techno clubs with variety i recommend the KitKat club, my personal favorite and the one I frequent regularly. On Saturdays it has 7 floors, with a variety of techno and other arts, a sauna, good beds and such for sex, very inventive costumes (usually worn by women) and just a very friendly and welcoming vibe, and a clear Dresscode so you don’t have to worry about this whole vibe bs (although vibes and being not too fucked up before you enter are important). Generally I would say (if it’s not a big event) get in line at around 22:45/2300, then you have to wait barely 20min and they are more lenient on Dresscode.

I have so much respect for the vibe curation of berghain, as a massive German techno fan it’s on the bucket list for sure. A lot of other videos skip over it’s origins (and current status) in the gay community and talk about the exclusivity as gimmicky rather than as a necessity. Tourists have a tendency to gawk, act inappropriately, and scare off regulars. Weeding out the people who won’t fit in allows the people who do a more comfortable, safer environment. Their number one goal is to maintain the atmosphere and I think they’ve succeeded.

Regular here and can say most was pretty accurate. Been going there since 2015-ish and never got rejected opposite to a hand full of friends which are also regulars but had bad luck on a specific day. My personal highlight is enjoying a yoghurt-orange ice-cream on a Sunday afternoon, or even watch the sundown from the panorama windows. Klubnachts are all unique, it's never the same vibe/people/music in there. Which leads to a few amazing party memories but also horrible ones when the atmosphere was totally off and even kinda threatening. I've made good friends there as it's a safe-space for weirdos to totally expressing oneself not having to hide or assimilate certain behaviours and more eccentric ways. Many artists and creatives like myself. And that's really about it- it's made by "outsiders" to "outsiders" so there isn't a formula on how to get in. And I really do believe that the harder you try the more "out of water" you make yourself seem. I go to the events that interest me musically or when friends are playing to support and that's it- never put much more of thought into it. And if it ever happens that I get rejected is unfortunate but at the end it's them missing an interesting guest for their night. Peace out!

I moved from Berlin almost 10 years ago after spending almost 3 years there, and at times, I surely miss many parts of it, including Berghain. I was there first time in 2016 with some friends, we showed up late on a sunday morning and with our pop-rock looking style, we barely got in to see Carl Craig spin. Anyways, I've been there countless times and been lucky enough to only have been rejected once or twice. While it is indeed a game of chance (since they are trying to create a perfect mix) there are some solid tricks to get in. The great thing is that you can see the colest goth style, edgy people, dancing next to the less sexy 40 year old German fat guy in a red washed out T-Shirt, and that is what is so cool about. But like I said, there are some solid ways to get in, such as darker rather than colorful clothing, being a little older, e.g. 35, rather than 19, not being to animated, smiley and happy, coming alone as a man (Berghain is a reincarnation of Ostgut which was more of a pure gay club), not coming there drunk or high in any obvious wat, but don't look to "sharp" either, in general etc. All of these are generalisations that "tend" to work but any rules can be broken at anytime by Sven or any other doormen.
The one thing that surprises me is that it is still open and if my maths are correct, it would have been 20 years this year (2024). I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing. I haven't been there since 2016 so I wouldn't know what it is like now with a new generation that might have been like 3 years old when I was there the first time, but some things don't age well and it might be time for a farewell party soon.

I remember they were the most nervous though, I said I don't even really want to get in, I rather go for breakfast (like 5-6pm on sunday), the gay dude said "great additude!", me "not an additude, I mean it!". Well as said, we got in - I remember Sven the bouncer seems tuff on first glance and well he probabaly is but he got that certain sensitivity for people. I didn't payed much attention to how the crowd was selected but now I think about it, it was quite nice - you know no phony people, a wild mix of very diffrent characters but all authentic in some way. For my personal expierence, I wasn't wrong with my inuition to rather go for breakfast, I just not enjoyed it that much because it is so heavily crowded, so not really space to dance and the soundsystem seemed a bit too good for my ears, meaning it was a bit too loud so is was rather hurtful. Besides that I can see how people are really enjoying it there but I guess that's just not me - although another comment mentioned how the bouncer selectes by if he thinks if the person in line can handle it and I felt perfectly fine there, so I guess they were not wrong it that sense. Although I could understand how many people might not be fine handling it, so the selective entry might make sense beyond the marketing-standpoint. Like the Britts described in the video - like dudes what do you even want there, no way you are comfortable in that place... Anyway I only stayed for 2-3h and went for my breakfast which I personally enjoyed much more. But yeah after I learned more about all the hype of Berghain I do enjoy to tell people I was cool enough to get in and I might even was a bit too cool for that place to stay :D ...anyway if you honestly think you can enjoy yourself in there you will have a good chance of getting in, if you are just in line because of the hype it's probably not worth to take a shot, there should be something else attracting you - in my case it was just a bit of curiosity and my friends.

I am in no position to fathom the idea of visting this club. I cannot imagine the state of mind that Berghain regulars have. My life could not be further from theirs, which is the exact reason why they fascinate me so much. I would love to understand where they come from in life, what they are up to and how the got into this kind of clubbing. I wonder, what would have had to happen in my life that I would be one of them?

Your life would be the exact same bro, the only difference is you get high in a club for as many hours as you want listening to techno. A lot of "normal" people do this with booze and their favourite poison, usually cigarettes and alcohol listening to some old school rock for hours on end. Who's to say the guys raving on different chemicals are doing any harm?

Interesting. I'm Black American. In the mid 2000s I did an Oil & Gas Law program in Dundee, Scotland. The program was mostly international law students from Africa, Middle East and Latin America. Every week I had African friends who would get several free VIP passes from the various club bouncers in town begging us to come for Thursdays- Hip Hop night. Because you can't have Hip Hop night without some Black people in the club (for the "vibe" I guess).

    Oh ive been here.
Was invited by a friend named Gladys to go clubbing, not really into it but she insisted.
His friend says I'd be in for a "baptism by fire"... Didn't know the history of this club nor know what it is about, but i saw a lot of gay people, and i was like "oh... I think Im gonna get puked on tonight"
Got in at around 11PM, line was unexpectedly short even though it was a saturday, like waay shorter than what the video showed.
I dont think the people there were even waiting to get in, more like hanging out outside.
We kinda waited outside but Gladys was just waiting for another gay friend to arrive.
    Got in, music was boring.
Went to the basement, i hear wheezing for some reason.
They're having fun while i was just there at the basement sitting on a stool looking very bored.
Went to the bathroom, at least two cubicles were closed, they're having a fuck party inside.
Went back, Gladys took me upstairs with his friends,
New people asked if i wanna fuck in bad English.
Said I'd rather go home and sleep.
    They laughed at me.
The repititive music killed whatever anticipation i had, it was not even good.
Idk why the video Said theres different music venue in each floor, it isnt, same DJ controlling all the speakers on the main floor.
Song that ruined it for me was a heavy base song with a little boy singing "1, 2, 3.. 10, 9,8... Kiss me in the night" in German.
Might be mishearing it since my german is worse than a kindergarten, but that phrase kept on repeat all night, the only thing that changed was the accompaniment tempo or instrument playing, but the base is ever present.
Gladys had fun, i did not.
Idk what's so great about that place

@@kittikorn6674 yes, either a syth or some vocaloid stuff.. sounds like a little boy, high pitched but definitely does not sound like a girl at all... if i have to guess, its a gay dude speaking sexily then they increased the voice pitch digitally. couldve been the DJ

I enjoyed my time when I went, the garden was open too as it was like 30 degrees during the day, it was so hot. However, as much as I enjoyed it, it's just another nightclub ticked off the list. IMO people get way to amped up about the place mainly because of how hard it is to get it. But, if you take a step back and look at the bigger picture, it's just a slightly unique nightclub.

7:40 "Getting into Berghain comes down, fundamentally, to a vibe". Could not be more accurate.
I've seen people smiling and in colourful outfits getting as a small group and then lone people dressing all black, looking depressed being refused entrance.
The sure thing is, once you are in, there is not one person that would not fit. I am amazed at how good the bouncers are at filtering people just by looking at them for a second.

I tried and got in TWICE... really, I must say it was BORING AF... and about the whole quantum physics to get in is actually quite simple, whether you belong to the scene or not, they can tell. We (Im a metalhead) ppl that belong to counter culture urban tribes and the such, well, you know we spot the normies from planetary distance, imagine the Bouncers doing that 12 hrs a day for 1/3 of the month... so yeah, the more alternative you look the higher the chances, also ppl looking completely comfy and like they really dont give a fuck how they are dressing but are dressing comfy clothes as to like dance for a thousand hours also get in fairly easy... if you are a normie tourist looking like one, well you wont get in, or you have to be REALLY lucky. Also women thinking they are going to a nice high end club dressing like one are the fastest to get kicked because they clearly have no idea where they are getting into xD

I was at Berghain to see the grand exhibition in 2014, and we spend some hours walking around. I really liked the architecture, it felt very safe and very free at the same time. I remember thinking how this could be an underground city or space station. Very well planned design!
