- Introduction Scene of Unreal captured at 1024x768 60fps from VGA.
(this is no framebuffer grab)
Timedemo is running in second half of video.
HQ video at retronn.de/ftp/...
I still get the chills when i see this clip.
Oh same ! And the music
Same here, unbeatable music and gameplay
This game was atmospheric as hell. Unforgettable how you start off in the crashed spaceship and make your way out into the open.
Especially on the trap with skaarji in the corridor. Every time scaring me as fuck.
I watch this clip almost daily at work. Nostalgia big time.
back in 1998 this animation was ground breaking
I still remember my first time seeing this live, and being absolutely amazed...
Me too! I built my first gaming PC after seeing this at a friend’s house.
Can almost cry because of the nostalgia that comes from seeing this! I used to spend hours and hours playing this game back when i was a kid! 😁💜
today 24 years ago a masterpiece was born. still gold...
Fucking nostalgic, epic, atmospheric, even 20 years after I first played this game.
Yep, I wanna back in time
@@przemysawczyz9247 wanna GO back in time
my jaw was on the floor the first time I saw this
a young me having shivers a few light years away from here :)
I still have very fond memories of attending a lan party with friends to play Unreal multiplayer and i had the only computer with a voodoo 2 :) Needless to say just about everyone went out and bought one the next week.
dem good ol times...sigh
Because everyone could afford one back then.
in its day this was the muts nuts 2 voodoo 2's in sli 10 -7 res when you get out of the ship the music is pure art sorry to be a old fogie but it was of its time.
First time i ever saw this in its day it was jaw dropping stuff.
Best intro ever…remember installing a generic video card but with 3dfx chip, went from full flat alleyway to mirror finish like in this video, I just felled out of my chair….Good Times
Raytracing is better than today... Lol
Oh the memories...
I'll never forget my first time playing this game my father got me into gaming and once I would complete a game he'd give me more to test myself he couldn't believe that I had beaten this game being as young as I was. I must of been 8 or 9yrs old long live Unreal!!.
Thats right since VSync was off for the timedemo part. In the original video (see ftp link) at few edges the characteristic scanline shift of the Voodoo2s running in SLI can be seen that appears if one card renders a frame faster that the other. This is different from current multi GPU rendering approaches with scaleable link interface (also SLI) using alternative frame rendering (AFR).
even today, you look back and remember how amazing it was. What a pitty the new generation of players will never understand what true gaming is.
Well yea its nostalgic and cool, but not sure why call it "true gaming", like cmon, lets not be silly, games came a long way
beautiful.
played it back in late 90s
I was there thousand years ago... Good Times....
Loved it. Don't even know how many hours I've spent on this.
How much I miss that old menu.
I remember a friend of my brother gave him a beta version of unreal, so the guns had some old sounds that I still feel nostalgic about.
Nowadays, I still play unreal, but on sporadic moments. Random deathmatches or 1-2 sp levels maybe. Found a oldunreal patch that adds back those old sounds as mutators, such a cool experience. They are beta sounds, but they were the sounds i grew up with.
When quality was the primacy
Yes, that's why I captured directly from VGA using a Epiphan VGA2PCIe capture card.
My respects, bro.
The memories, mon :)
I thought the same thing instantly, bro ;)
One of my all time faves
as it was eye candy back then, it would be same eyegasm nowadays in Ocullus Rift 3D..!
so much memories.
voodoo 2 cards were £ 200 in the 90's so maybe a couple off 980ti's now.
the graphics was like "crysis" game graphics in these years
Back when you don’t need RTX to see a reflection.
Those reflections won't work with modern graphics. It basically render the object twice, which is more expensive than ray tracing on modern hardware.
How were the reflections in Unreal achieved? Was it all coded?
@@lasergrilleddturkey4064 like the comment before u said, it basically a 2nd world below your feet act as reflection. probably gonna melt PC or console if used today with modern graphics lol but still pretty impressive. You can see your crotch and up a woman's skirt in Unatco, in Deus Ex game lol. Deus Ex 1 used Unreal engine.
@@lasergrilleddturkey4064 In layman’s terms, it basically re-renders the textures on the ground and adds some filters to make it look like a reflection. It looked real, but had a real drag on performance, even on high end hardware of the era like Voodoo 3s and other stuff of the era. Hell, it even struggles on integrated chips of the early 2010s, which are light-years away from late 90s accelerators. It was also hard to implement in-game, meaning you would see a reflection only rarely. RTX may have been really expensive, but it set a global and less resource hungry standard in ray-tracing
@@bltzcstrnx - Probably was the way they should have gone instead of RTX then.
stuning intro
Hmm... I need to get Glide wrapper for my copy at home.
Wasent there a 3dfx logo on the screen too if you were running a voodoo card?
Only if you enable it by setting the environment variable FX_GLIDE_SHAMELESS_PLUG
Framebuffer grab = bad idea because voodoo's have some trick with 16 bit looking like 24 bit
Nice, how long since I have seen this.
Good times!
how do i save the game in the game?
Powered by GLIDE 😎
I miss Comp USA!!
What machine, what Version?
2.25f? was the best for a 3dfx-card.
It is 2.26 as seen in the top right corner.
Ah yes. The game that set me down the path of flight controls on mouse and keyboard FPS. Goldeneye 64 did it to me with gamepads lol
can share the link for download?
strawberry jam sandwich and mug of hot chocolate
it has some tearing...
Agree
