- // ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Did my best to recreate rather than redesign.
Took about 6 months. All 3D models were made from scratch by me specifically for this project - using the original video as a reference.
This version of the audio is from The Gaming Restoration youtube channel, unsure if they did the work to clean it up or if they just did an AI upres on the video.
Check out the original over here:
• Quake II Intro - Watch...
Built in Blender, textured in Substance Painter, rendered with Cycles.
I’m still relatively new to these tools, so critique is much appreciated!
// THANKS
Wanted to throw a quick shout-out to Josh Gambrell, Grant Abbitt, CG Geek, Default Cube, Blender Guru, and everyone else who posts awesome tutorials. I’ve been learning Blender seriously for just over a year now, and would still be staring at the default cube without these guys - so thank you all for doing what you do. And thank you Corridor Crew podcast for giving me company while I worked!
Cheers!

This kind of looks like the new cinematics in the remastered rerelease. Boy, what a coincidence!
Turns out, they're actually the same, the QuakeCon livestream talked about how they got the remastered FMVs.
Turns out, they got the guy who made this for the remaster!
@@Midway64He was being sarcastic you know. 😌
@@TAURON85 Oh well damn it.
Still, the new FMVs are really cool.
@@Midway64 I'm looking at it side-by-side and they are not the same.
@@Youda00008 oh yeah, they got the same guy that made this but not the same fmvs, my bad 😅
Congrats on having your project added to the Quake 2 remaster update!
They should pay you to allow this into RTX. What a great and faithful recreation
Well, I mean, they obviously did now
@@KeksimusMaximus not to mention it looks amazing too.
@@KeksimusMaximus
Well, they did change it a bit, but they got the assets.
@@MrSurrealKarma They hired this guy and he remade every single CGI cutscene for the remaster 😎
How cool is that?
Still after 24 years this is my favorite game intro of all time. The hairs on my arms still stand up at 2:32 when the bass drops and everything goes to hell. Chilling.
2:11 - For all this time I thought the commander says "Alright there men, you're in the green and ready to go." I watch Civvie11 in 2021 and realize it is actually "Alright Bitterman, you're in the green and ready to go." Because your name is Bitterman!!! Mind = blown.
I used to think the hull grafitti said "Bitch" on his drop pod.
About a decade after the game had released I realized... It says Bitterman. Who knew, eh?
My goosbump moment is the carrier appearing: A "first contact" scenario that ends in humanity sending their response to the first alien encounter in the form of a gunship that visually just says: "We dont come in peace, we're not here to negotiate - we have come to wipe you out."
100% the same. Well, I played in 97 at the age of five, but anyway.
//Thanks everybody for the support and feedback!
Hey, thanks for watching!
Be sure to say hi and let me know how you liked the rebuild!
Really well done. The only suggestions I would give:
Blue nebula in the beginning is a bit more substantial in the original. It helps with the contrast between safety (where the good guys are coming from) and danger (red/orange strogg home world).
In the shot where the main ship is next to the planet, the asteroids are missing from the BG. They are there in the original for compositional reasons, which helps with filling the screen and make it that much better.
I would also suggest using some kind of noise filter to grimy upp the surfaces. Right now everything looks a little too clean. Wonderful job regardless. This is one of the best intros in gaming history and you did it justice. Cheers!
Watched it just again. Damn this is good
@@Apostolinen Thanks man! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave some feedback! Awesome learning project, always loved the audio but never realized how good the visual storytelling was until I had jumped in
@@BCMSihope you got well paid for this now that q2 remaster is released
Finished all campaigns in Q2 Enhanced earlier. Your intros are great. Have you ever played the Q2 expansion Zaero? I'm playing it now. It also has a movie at the start. I'd love to see it get a remake.
Awesomely done, mate.
If there is ever a Quake 2 remaster by Nightdive studios, this intro should be there.
Thanks man!
Agree, very impressive!
There's now a Quake II remaster!
And the remastered FMVs do look similar to this video...
The actual remastered intro that just got released looks crazy similar to this, it took me a minute to figure out if this was the same exact remaster or not lol Both have their strengths
@@Absolynth Looking at the QuakeCon stream reveals that this guy got brought up to make the remastered FMVs, just some touches and fixes for better authenticity.
Pretty crazy being honest!
Congrats on being featured in the remastered
Thanks!
@@BCMSii booted up q2 and i was like: “damn id went all out for this” then i saw this! great job!
Genuinely blew me away to see this in HD and widescreen. Thanks for helping make the kick-ass remaster even better!
Damn its... so beautiful and epic. Gives me chills same as the oryginal when i played ten years ago
If it catches even a 10th of the tension of the original I am stoked! Thanks!
Me and me mum had to live in my grandpa's flat for a while. He had a win95 pc and mum brought Quake 2 from home. As you could imagine, installation was faulty but we managed to run it. The intro was lagging and we couldn't go more than the first second and, of course, skipping it didn't hep either. It never loaded. So, I waited for months to actually play this "horror game" as mum called it. When we moved in to our own home again, dad opened it like it was no big deal since this was win98 also he and mum already played it so he skipped the intro. Before I said anything, mum just knew and told him to open it again. This video you see here is how I experienced that original intro when I was 3 years old.
Quake 2's and Mass Effect 1's few starting seconds are the solid and definitive proof you don't need a 1 hour long cutscene to stabilish a great backstory for your game.
Incredible work on this remake mate, allthough imo you could put just a bit more brightness or light sources in the city, but other than that little detail this is a solid 10/10!
Short and sweet. Enough to give you some idea of what is going on without forcing you through 30 minutes to an hour of long winded cinematics or tutorial.
For Quake II all background info and other stuff was in manual. Lots of reading considering we are talking about hub-based FPS game... (Manual has 37 pages)
Congrats on your work for the remaster!
The remastered FMVs look really good in the game!
Hats off to you buddy.
Thanks a ton!
I was raised on Quake, Quake 2. This introduction is burned into my childhood, and it captured the vibe of Aliens in a video-game intro-sequence and made the whole campaign seem more epic. I'm stoked you got not only recognition for this, but that you got picked up to do the whole project for the remaster.
Well done, and hopefully the start of a great career in CG.
I had to watch this really close side by side with the remaster to see that they aren't the same. This is amazing!
Haha I reused a lot of this work for the version that is in the game now, but also tried to improve where I could and fix mistakes I made in this version
@@BCMSi that's awesome! I was hoping you were actually behind the new one. It came out so clean!
@@BCMSi Ahh, actually I was mistaken, Adrianator IS on the new ship! wasnt looking hard enough i guess lmao
@@PonderousEclectica4383 No you're totally right haha I couldn't for the life of me find the name of that ship back when I made this, and in my reference all I could make out was 'The Adr....' so I came up with The Admonisher which was incorrect but I thought still sort of fitting
It is fixed in the new version though!
I came here expecting peak 2000s HD slop but it turns out it was so good it became first-party content.
This was the second game I ever played growing up, and for 3 minutes and 31 seconds I was nine years old again.
This is absolutely amazing!
This here is the best review I could ask for ahah I'm just stoked so many people remember this intro video as fondly as I do
LOL! I saw this 2 months ago and commented on this video. And now it's in the remaster! Amazing! You are the man! Have you done any other videos? You're literally a Bethesda contractor now 😎
Haha it was tough not to spill the news. Haven't had time for personal projects, they did have me do the same treatment for the ending and all of the expansion pack cutscenes for the game too though! Been a ton of fun
@@BCMSi Holy shit, that is so AWESOME man, I am really happy for you! You did an EXCELLENT job, they really hired the right guy with a passion for his work. I like the remaster and I like the cutscenes, you're literally in history now 💪🏻😎👍🏻
@@KeksimusMaximus Literal dream job haha thanks!
amazing work. If there's ever a Quake 2 remaster outside of the RTX version, this should be the intro.
Your wish has come true buddy!
The guy got brought up for the remastered FMVs in the Quake II remaster.
Wow, pretty cool that they reached out to you for this for the official Q2 rerelease. Nice job.
Congrats on getting this into the remaster, and thanks so much for doing such a good job polishing up my favorite intro!
"Did my best to recreate rather than redesign."
It clearly shows. This was amazingly done! It's nearly identical to the original version. The only difference is the quality, (obviously,) and the slight swerve as Bitterman crashes, which is a nice touch, along with other slight tweaks and touch-ups that make it feel more alive.
This intro planted a seed that culminated in a Computer Sci degree and finally allowimg myself to veer towards design all the eons later. Incredibly thrilling. Ingenious.
You should be really proud of this. Made me feel like I was 7yrs old again watching for the first time.
One of THE best openings to a game in that era, in my opinion. Really got you pumped for what was to come.
Agreed. Or any era, for that matter.
I have no words on how superb this remake is. Thank you very much for your effort and dedication!
Long Life Quake II
Very little need to critique, and it's astonishingly faithful. Awesome work!
Holy shit..
It is so faithfully recreated.
I thought this was the official remastered one that just came out lol Amazing work man
Very impressed with how this turned out.
With only a few tweaks/additions, this could easily be used as an official intro to a quake II remaster.
I appreciate the kind words man!
And now this has been made official as of today after a good deal of tweaks!
This is rad. The sound design still blows me away
the part where the music stops apart from the vocal at 3:17 was always my favourite
dude i saw that you made the Quake 2 intro/outro cutscenes! AWESOME WORK! You stuck very close to everything. Congrats that ND/Id hired you. Going to be honest, i prefer Stroggos in this one. Looks more like a planet while in the remaster it looks more rocky.
I'm speechless - this is true to the original in every detail, and the fact that I still get goosebumps after 20 years when the carrier comes into view speaks for the quality of this recreation. Now I can treat my occasional fit of nostalgia without having to ask myself "is it my eyesight getting worse or was it always so blurry?".
Thanks a lot for this!
Congratulations on getting to work on the official Quake II Remaster! It's really neat to see this become official! I hope they bring you back to work on Quake III Arena's cinematics in the future !
This is beautiful. True Remake.
Kudos to animating all of the guns on the warship, something the original video didn't want to do lmao.
Damn, this is nice!
I know it's a 1:1 remake, but if they did redo this scene in the future, It would be cool to see the Big Gun firing actually firing at the the human fleet as you're coming in on your crash landing.
Always seemed oddly peaceful that it's just sitting there inactive the whole time, even though the radio chatter confirms it's active.
It has always boggled my mind that if the Big Gun was such a threat that it had to be destroyed before the full invasion begins, why did it let that ship with the drop pods get so close and not fire at it?
@@Youda00008 Maybe it was out of range and that's why they dropped the pods? It was a bit strange though that you didn't see any other small AA fire shooting at the pods. There's no way the one big gun would be used to shoot down something as small as the one mad drop pods.
Wait, did they hire you for the cutscenes on the remaster?
Yup!
@@BCMSi that's awesome! CONGRATS!
I really happy that I live in the same Age with who created this game and the artist who created this beautiful remaster intro on blender, this legacy must be saved for Ages.
Superb job! You added a lot of awesome little details that I always thought were missing given the audio, like when Bitterman gets clipped, awesome!
Say, would you be willing to share your project files with the community? I for one would try my hand at remastering your remaster (but in UE5)
Cheers!
Thanks so much! Would you be able to work from the .blend files, or would you need everything exported as fbx? My files are a bit messy since I was kinda learning as I worked through
Lovely peace of work here. A legit update of the original that works well in an HD remake / Remaster. The original Audio is still just amazing.
YOU MADE LITERALLY ONE OF MY WISHES COME TRUE. I have wanted a non crap version of this for YEARS
This would compliment well with the RTX version of the game. Good job.
Amazing.
The intro still makes me tear up and wish i was younger.
it was really hard with a controller for me.
I played with my sister and dad and we somehow beat it
I recently re played it on pc with a ton more gaming experience and a mouse n keyboard and it was MUCH easier.
Amazing. Now all we need is the Quake III Arena intro and it'll be perfect.
I was secretly hoping for one of the fins on the pod to be broken off or one of the thrusters flickering due to damage, but it's still the best recreation I've seen to date
Thanks! I know I was actually thinking the exact same thing the other day, even just flickering and some smoke trail would've been killer
Not bad at all, qualifies as an intro for RTX Quake 2.
I would be glad to see the BigGun shoot, because it is exposed in this frame as a nice render, and that is how it looks to me. I know that it's not faithful to the original cinematic, but I always wanted to see it shooting. BANG :)
Haha maybe I'll try to figure out what that looks like one of these days. I think I'd like to learn some cool smoke simulation stuff for that
@@BCMSi Starship Troopers are very reminiscent of Q2 esthetic, especially shooting in space and their helmets and armors. ua-cam.com/video/zPYuV_jGk7M/v-deo.html
The Big Gun is a EMP blast weapon, but it wouldn't be a bad idea.
Also, you should check it out Citizen Abel Episode 3, which features a real good looking Big Gun map, Interior and more.
Better than Q2 itself, and kinda closer to PS1 and N64 Big gun maps
Brilliant work! Way to rework a classic intro!
Good job with the cutscenes in the remaster.
Damn, this needs more popularity. What an awesome job.
I didn't know this needed to be done, but it did and this was perfectly done! This has to be one of the all-time best intros to a game, and you just made it better!
this gave me the same chills i had when i was 7 and i watched this for the first time. fucking OUTSTANDING work! only critique: the surface of Stroggos could do with a *smidge* more definition and more lighting. but holy shit this is some a+ work.
"...as this brave visual artists take the render to blender, we, the rest of humanity wish him luck and god speed aswell"
This is very well done. This should have been in the Quake RTX package for sure. It looks great. A proper up-res for a classic.
Purest poggers
Sending this to all my contacts
Poggers? You meant... STROGGERS? xD
@@aurorafox1283 Actually perfect
Sooooo clean
Toasty!
That was dooope! *computer updated
wow. this brings back memories. well done.
Kill me now. Kill me now.
Make it stop. Make it stop.
Lemme ouut. Lemme ouut.
Ba-a-a-aaa. Ba-a-a-aaa.
I just teared up a bit.
Wait, this looks identical to the intro on the remake, was that your work????
Yessir! They were crazy enough to let me do the ending and expansion scenes too haha
First of all congratulations! I saw your project a year ago and I'm glad they chose you as a member at the developing team of the Enchanced version of the game. I just walkthroughed the main missions in one sitting and the only things I would like to be redone with more emphasis on them were the skyboxes.
By any chance, is there a link where we could download the blend file of the intro video? I find the topography of the surface and the buildings very interesting!
Was this used in the Remaster? Very cool!
That's so cool. Loved the original intro, and this recreates it perfectly. Always wanted to get a clear copy of that music they use too, but I guess there is no version of it out there without the speech and effects.
Everything about this intro is (and always has been) excellent, but I too have always wanted the background music without all the extra layering on top of it.
Well, actually not bad, man. Lacks in small details due to engine specifics but you still went for the max possible replication and the overall result was pretty decent. Worth a Like for the effort of yours, for sure.
Thanks man, I appreciate the support! There's definitely some tricks I haven't learned yet for layering in those smaller details, found myself kinda brute forcing my way through portions. Gettin' there though!
Your project looks very similar to the new remaster's intro. Did you have any part in it?
Yup! Got to fix some mistakes, and they let me tackle the ending and expansion pack cutscenes as well
@@BCMSi that's awesome dude
REALLY well done, incredible attention to all the details, great stuff!
Amazing video! Really want to play this game again!
While I was moving I found Uncle Lance's original disc he lent us in the 90's ahaha maybe you can load it up from there
This is absolutely fantastic. You kept it so faithful to the original too, well done!
Dude, this is sick!! Awesome work, you really captured the tone and all the little details.
Thanks so much!
Could have had the Big Gun fire the EMP that wiped out the Marine drop pods.
I'll tell you this: You commented on another video about you making a remake of the intro, and I was like, ye, i'll click it, how bad could it be?
It is beautiful. It is mostly on point. And watching this intro in hd for the first time in awe, makes me wonder if that's how people felt with this intro back then when it was brand fresh.
Going back to this video: Just out of curiosity, did you had any involvement on the cutscenes from the quake 2 remastered?
I remember they said at quakecon they hired a youtuber 'cause they saw a video of someone learning blender, and the video description kinda matched what they said.
Either way, the quality of this video was at the par of the remaster, so good job =P
@@AlphaEnt2The remastered intro is this one (with a few tweaks). The author was contracted by Bethesda :)
This would be great in the upcoming remaster
good news
this needs more views. Nice work, it looks amazing.
La escena del minuto 1:27 cuando la nave prende sus luces falta en el fondo los meteoritos orbitando al planeta Stroggos. Un mero detalle al original, espectacular intro que recuerdos.
Incredible.
It's funny how they unrelate the stroggs invasion to the loss of comunication with the colony of Mars, and that it will be restablished within a few days... 😁
It just clicked me, that the soldier voice(the one, that lost all flight controls) is actually bitterman. So technically quake 2 protagonist is more talkative than gordon freeman.
really amazing work!
thanks man!
It's beautiful... Great work!
Jeez… great visual! Great voice acting! Great everything! If you wanna make a game give me a call!
I've no idea how many weeks or months that amazing piece of brilliant took, but this as wonderful and accurate work as i have no words to describe that. Wery awesome. You're cool, man. Keep it on your way. Glad to accidentally found this masterpiece
Good job bro
imagine gameplay now, full blown remake
Nicely done. I find however that it is much darker than the original in the second half and lots of details are lost due to that.
I totally agree, it was already too dark, and then I think youtube compression made it even worse. Would really like to take another stab at that section sometime
Epic so well made like it was the source material
Impressive! Almost as original, the same vibe just like back in the 90s. Looking forward to seeing more upcoming animations
Wow! - the best intro in videogame history just got better - great job!
I miss this game
Good job my man
That was awesome. 👍
Just as I remember it!
well done!
Faithful as fuck. I'm blown away!
This is simply awesome I have no other words, just breathtaking!
A little more artificial light to present the scenery of the stroggos city would be nice
Artificial lights, as in lights on the ground? Or just overall fill? I definitely had some trouble with that scene
Nice work!
This is actually pretty good!
This is beautiful. Thank you.
That is the essence of awesomeness! Brilliant work, well done!
