Map Midian (E1L6) ported from unreleased Unreal PSX.

gotta admire the fact that even the Unreal devs felt like they need to mimic quake before deciding against it
Absolutely, this looks like Quake.
Quake was the standard at the time. Originally, Unreal was going to be a fantasy themed online MMO, and then they decided to make it more like Quake because they weren't sure of the market demand for something like that (how crazy that their vision preceded WOW so far back.) They were also developing this alongside Emissary, which in my opinion is why the game shifted toward a more immersive story based game.
They've made hell of a progress in just a year and a half. Game was released in may 1998.
Man, this is really interesting. To see what they started with to what they released. I remember playing Unreal the moment it came out and was blown away. Was nothing else like it and it felt lightyears ahead of other games at the time.
0:12 "you fast, n*** er"
Loving these betas and alphas!
initially the music wasn't that impressive but at around 2 minutes - epic
А ведь предрелизная версия Unreal выглядела намного круче! Спасибо! / But the pre-release version of Unreal looked much cooler! Thank you!
So cool! So different from the end product though, aside from a few models. You can definitely feel the influence of Quake (and even a bit of GoldenEye) here. I wonder if this is how the Egyptian theme eventually made its way into UT and became a staple of UT2003/UT2004?
If you're able to remember, ancient civilizations were really popular in the 90's, and it was easier to replicate their architecture with the primitive angles, textures, and structures those societies were known for. I have no doubt that games like Powerslave and Serious Sam had a major art impact on this game.
Also, this Beta was developed nearly a year before GoldenEye released.
Second music track sounds like a reject from the Crusader game.
That music, tho! :D :D
Level looks neat but there's no space for the monsters to move, from the looks of the Brutes tho I wonder if that was because movement code was minimal at best. Perhaps they didn't have much of a baseline to test against.
There’s an option in unreal gold to have the weapons in the center, that’s so cool
I always play it this way.
Minecraft with weapon and monster mod! :))))))
Wow, they changed a whole lot from the beta to the gold, didn't they. Except the level design.
Of course original beta was on rendering software. Direct3d will be added only in '99 on Unreal 1
not sure about if it were software rendered. Unreal was pretty much focused on 3dfx (voodoo) even when it was released, so i would hazard a guess that it relied on that back then - software 3d was okay ish when it came out but you needed to be on a pentium 2 to run it at decent fps.
(d3d was a later addition as you said)
:) over 25 years ago… goodness me :)
Daaaaaamn, great soundtrack. How it's called?
Andrew Sega (Necros of the Psychic Monks) - "Escape 2". (In Pursuit Of Greed OST)
Yeah that looked rough. Music was ass. Gameplay wasn't much better but hey it was a beta and they actually improved it a ton.
Unreal is the mix of gameplay features that just worked. Love the game.
This isn't the actual music, which was way better because it was Michael van der Bos.
Song name?
In Pursuit Of Greed OST. Song name - "Escape 2". Autor - Andrew Sega (Necros of the Psychic Monks)
Andrew Sega (Necros) is proper great. He went on to join a synthpop band named Iris in the early '00s. Their stuff is less industrial-sounding but if you're into soulful electronic music I couldn't recommend them enough.
@@spasehead Did they put it as a placeholder?
