    I always found this game very underated.
    Many people liked much more unreal tournament and counter strike.
    This game on an old 98 and a soundblaster live + the vodoos a nice CRT monitor and pure bliss

    This. Is. Perfect. Unreal is the Vitruvius of videogames, beautiful to see, sensational to listen to, original background, rich and surprising gameplay. Anyone who has played this back then can't help it not to have chills everytime they see it, specially when exiting the Vortex Rikers. Nothing I play today will ever make me feel like I did for Unreal.

    don't be fooled, this is very advanced technology even now 20 years later. I am learning how to code a 3d engine and some low level stuff and this one already has dynamic lighting in 1998, that's crazy. When you know how it all works on the low level you see that the tech has not changed that much, it's just higher resolution textures and a bunch of shading on top of it (shadows).

    • @ChristopherGray00
      @ChristopherGray00 2 роки тому

      tech has absolutely changed, rtx cards of modern day are literally thousands of times more efficient than voodoo2 cards in SLI, during 1999 usage of graphics API like glide was also very rare and GPUs at this quality were very expensive, this was truly bleeding edge for its time, and now a $100 phone can run this game multiple times better today consuming less than a quarter of the energy.

    • @scrumpyyos8554
      @scrumpyyos8554 9 років тому

      i love the overdrive for some reason it's a good upgrade from the 486 as i use xwe for modding doom and it's pretty slow on it even my pentium laptop is way faster.

    • @Dxceor2486
      @Dxceor2486 8 років тому

      +Scrumpy YOS I don't think that's a good idea. Of course it will probably work, but ... It will not perform great at all ...
      In my opinion this is useless, none of the 486/pentium overdrive is fast enough to make use even a little bit of the voodoo sli. Nothig will be smooth with that. Even a pentium MMX 233 is too slow for this kind of setup. Go for a K6-2 or a pentium 2 AT LEAST for a SLI. As I said, it's not that it would not work, my voodoo 2 12 already performs "meh" with my pentium mmx 200, so I don't want to know how it would perform with a 486/pentium overdrive ^^.
      Until the last pentium 2s/early pentium 3s, the cpu was the bottleneck for these cards, and only after that they would become the system's bottleneck.

    • @scrumpyyos8554
      @scrumpyyos8554 8 років тому

      Yeah I've currently got a Voodoo 1 In the system with a 100mhz overclock and it performs as you said (Meh) or worse with games... Just wanted to see if you could sort of make the game run even if it was terrible and really sli isn't cut out for that machine. Was thinking the top sort of card to put in there would be a matrox 2d card and possibly the Voodoo for Quake.

    Voodoo 2 SLI is a cool idea, but image quality took a bit of a hit compared to a single voodoo 2 at 800x600. You can see the characteristic 'scanlines' of voodoo 2 sli if you look closely in the video. 16 bit dithering didn't look as good in sli mode either. I used to have a lot of trouble syncing my monitor to the output signal in sli and even with it adjusted as best I could, would get a thumping headache after about 30 minutes of using sli mode.
    Voodoo 3 was much better in terms of image quality and is a much more viable option for 1024x768 mode.
    Thanks for the vid.

      @MichaelHuth  5 років тому +1

      @@magreger The problem is that the floating point performance of a K6 is much lower at the same clock compared to a Pentium II. Unreal uses floating point extensivly.
      For pushing the V3, I would recommend something similar to a Pentium III 600 MHz or faster (for CPU demanding games).
      I got myself a K6-2+ at 600 MHz and can tell you that upgrading from one Voodoo2 to Voodoo2 SLI does not increase the fps at all on the K6. It only allows to run 1024x768 resolution.
      For this video here I used a Pentium III 650 MHz coppermine.

    • @magreger
      @magreger 5 років тому

      @@MichaelHuth Great info! A bit of a bummer though. I centered my retro build around this K6-2 board. It came with an integrated 3D Rage pro chipset which appealed to me at the time. However my Voodoo nostalgia grew strong. I purchased & installed the Voodoo 3 and performance was underwhelming. I started to suspect a bottleneck when Unreal essentially produced similar framerates across all resolutions (low 20's). Now I'm unsure whether to upgrade to a k6-2/500 in an attempt to achieve 30+ fps or abandon this board and use a Slot-1 PIII 500mhz board I have. However, that CPU gets very hot in pure DOS mode which is undesirable. I'm basically trying to build a rig that can play the majority of 90's pc games.

      tested last week, with an awe 32 as soundcard is about 46/47 fps average. With an ESS audiodrive sound card was lower (maybe it did tax the cpu more). My V2s have 12mb x2. I might try to reduce the ram amount and check again, since i got a k6 3+, 256mb might not being fully cacheable from the chipset (depending on cache type, even if the cpu onboard cache should cache it, it still has a performance hit in win98 games)

    • @armorgeddon
      @armorgeddon 9 років тому

      SpaceMarineITA 46 fps average sounds ok to me, unless the minimum fps was significantly lower than that. If ESS audiodrive was a PCI card, you could be right. It also depends on the sound settings (surround mode, sampling rate, number of effects etc.) that was choosen either by you or automatically by the game. AMD CPUs got a slight boost with Voodoos since 3dfx implemented the use of 3DNow from a certain drivers version onwards, but I guess you are using one of the latest drivers anyway. Cacheable area limit of your chipset should be available on the internet.

      4 average FPS in software mode. 86Box appearently emulates a Voodoo 2 but it appearently isn't slideshow. I,ll just see when i get a Voodoo 2 8mb PCI.
      I suppose that they might have optimized to take advantage of the MMX processors. Question is, have you even ran this on a Voodoo 2 on Intel Pentium 100MHz or AMD K5 125MHZ?

    • @djhenyo
      @djhenyo 6 років тому

      The game barely runs well with a Pentium 233 MMX, and back in the pre-GPU days the polygonal geometry and physics were rendered by the CPU. Unreal, or any visually intense game from that era, will run like shit on a P100 even with an awesome 3D accelerator.

    i have to say this aged pretty damn well graphics wise. unreal even looks a lot more like the later Quake3 than the - at the time - competing quake2 engine titles. but gaming wise i always prefered half life, by a huge margin. unreal was more like a tech demo.

    by the way if you want blood just get the gog version off a torrent or something lol i have to reformat my system because i am installing windows 2000 because the quake 2 anti cheat works on there

      +Interactivbg1 Yes, however the build version differ quite a lot. Unreal uses Unreal Engine Build 226 and Clive Barkers Undying uses UT Build 420. See also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games

      It is Unreal engine that was used for Clive Barker's Undying, but not the version released for the first Unreal in the series, they used the Unreal engine edited for Unreal Tournament that showed more graphics improvements, animations and other features!

    I was not playing Unreal for the first time, still 1998 is already a while ago...
    The video should also focus a bit more on the technical stuff.
    f.e. in comparison to the PowerVR PCX2 Unreal footage.
    I wouldn't mind if someone else who shows more experience in fps action adventures would play, but community is small here.

    When the first 3Dfx Voodoo 1 came out the consoles lost the better graphics war.
    Bill Gates said that his graphics division guy "liked" the PlayStation's graphics in 1995.
    Although 3D graphics accelerators for PC's were talked about in 1995 none were really worthwhile for the consumer till late in 1996.
    It would have been costly to have 2 3Dfx Voodoo 2's in SLI back in 1998 and if someone were to do it they probably would add them to a beefy and costly Pentium II system running at 400 Mhz or 450 Mhz.What was it like $500 alone just for the Diamond Monster 3D II Mega monster bundle (2 Monster 3D II cards).

      +m9078jk3 When you think about it, nowadays the GTX980ti is more expensive than two voodoo 2 when they were new

    • @Mr_Meowingtons
      @Mr_Meowingtons 7 років тому

      add inflation in to that....

    • @Dxceor2486
      @Dxceor2486 7 років тому +3

      even with inflation, this is still way more expensive for ONE card
      However, cpus back then were also way more expensive that what we are getting today.
      In 1998, the celeron 300A was at the same price as today's core i5 if you add inflation.
      The pentium 2 450 was more expensive than the core i7

      You can get it on GOG for $9.99. The GOG version has NO DRM, *unlike* the Steam version.
      Then, after installing it, you can update it with the 227 patch you can find at oldunreal.com/oldunrealpatches.html which will give you a Direct3D9 renderer and more advanced features like shadows for characters!
