Virgin Australia was already in difficulties before the COVID emergency and was unable to survive in its existing form. It was sold and the new owners have simplified its fleet and are concentrating on domestic services with a few nearby international destinations. My son flew on their 777 to LA shortly after they started that service and found it very comfortable.
Same situation with South African Airways, but only 51% was sold to a private investor, while our government still has the rest of 49%. Focused ,but still struggling with domestic flights with minimal international flights.
@@superbrownsheep3777 Virgin Atlantic was a different company. The connection is that Branson owned a share of both companies and they both flew under the Virgin name. Virgin Australia under its new ownership and its simplified fleet is reviving its domestic routes and a few shorter international routes.
My dad works for virgin and used to fly 777's and a330's. Him and I are pretty sad that he's now stuck with 737's(although they are still good planes).
@@thataussieaviator Yes it's a pity VA has abandoned its longer international routes. Qantas should have Australian competition. Fortunately there's plenty of international competition to keep us out of Qantas' clutches.
VA long haul will be so missed in the Australian market. Can’t believe the entire 777 and A330 fleet are no longer. It was interesting to see the UA and DL on the taxiway during takeoff as all would’ve been chasing each other to LAX over the Pacific.
At the beginning of this year, i went out to Toowoomba for a little vacation and apart of that was we went to WTB (Toowoomba Wellcamp) and we saw a motherload of abandoned aircrafts. 5 Virgin B777s & a few TigerAir B737s. I was shocked to see them but it was incredible to stand next to them in their final months of sitting there. On July 11th when I was driving back into brisbane after a road trip to Darwin, i saw only 1 Virgin B777 was there ...
I flew VA's 777 roundtrip twice in premium economy between LA and Sydney, nost recently in September of 2019. Their onboard catering was fantastic, and it was the best service on the route compared to UA or AA.
I was on that exact same flight...a month later on March 16th. It was a totally different world then. We were on a world cruise that abruptly ended in Perth. We flew from Perth to Sydney then onto LA and then final leg into Boston. 24 hours on planes. We scored bulkhead seats on the Syd-LA leg. I missed the hot dog snack (sleeping). The IFE was awful. The video and voice weren't synced. The crew was fabulous, who knew then they were just weeks away from losing their jobs. Thanks for posting this.
ohHHH NO! what happened with your guys fare? did you get refunded for the rest of the trip... I have so many questions as im deciding ti go on one soon.
@@jamesgeorge7053 we did get our money back equal to the value of the rest of the cruise. They also paid for our entire trip back plus the shipment of our luggage.
I remember taking this flight back in 2018 on my first solo USA holiday, loved it then, I hope virgin Australia gets back or close to what they were soon. And a nice video too 😊
Don’t worry they are prob soon in 2024 or 2025 maybe in 2023 idk because after their order of 737 max 8 they will order widebody aircraft like 777 a330 and others
I did a round trip LAX SYD on this very plane a couple years ago! Thanks for the memories! And I flew Delta on their 777-200 as well. Both great flights, service, comfort! Did the same trip on AA, not so much!
Love the GE90 startup, and then the CX A350 landing in front of you - I'd taken the CX A350 (and then 773) to the US from SYD in Dec 2019. It is a pity we lost VA on international, but at least the ariline survived and is growing domestically again. The main meal looked good, but you can barely call that a beer :P
I think it’s very clever that when you see an airline in the background of the video out the window, you put a link in the upper right hand content if you’ve done a TripReport on that airline. Small but Amazing detail!
Only option out of Melbourne 4 a direct flight is Qantas & United which I’m not a fan of! I will say air New Zealand is a good choice to fly with via Auckland!
I can't believe they are gone. This is news to me. I was a Velocity platinum member for 4 years during my sales/service tech role and I loved flying that plane to LA. The on board service was exceptional. They even took my meal oder before departure as did Etihad to the UAE. Really miss that and even more so they have been sold off.
@5:25 And I've never had one of those inside-the-arm mounted audio ports where I didn't press my leg against it and snap the prongs off in the socket. You'd think they'd learn not to place them there.
I have a friend that has a condo near the runways at LAX. I noticed very late at night and during the predawn hours they land over the ocean as you did on this flight. Normally, during the daytime hours they land over the 405 freeway from the east. All my years flying into LAX I never knew this until I spent the night at his place. I loved the sounds of the jets landing as I slept. I know that is very weird. I would just wake up for a second and wonder what part of the world is that plane coming from?
This is the only flight I have ever flown business class, and tbh wasn't as good as I expected, mainly because the beds didn't go flat and you were forced to sleep on your back. A very aesthetically pleasing airline, however I think comfort is then compromised.
My brother is flying London-Atlanta tomorrow and paid $47 for a rapid test in Heathrow. I Flew Riga,Latvia to Istanbul on Sept 16 and paid 24 euros for a rapid test in Riga Airport. I think those tests will stay forever as will masks.
I remember making the skip across the pond from Sydney to LA with Virgin in 2019. Had my phone connected to the planes WiFi and the first thing I noticed when connected to American UA-cam was Bernie Sanders asking me for financial support.

I tried lot airlines b787-8 dreamliner krk-chicago. And my IFE good but my brothers didint work so well on the 10 hour flight full but then they worked it out
I flew Singapore - San Francisco in February 2020 and they too asked me if I had been to Central China... I haven't but I wonder if they'd put me in quarantine or something if I said yes or made me do covid test on the spot 🤔.
