  • Unreported World meets the women of Mauritania beating the stigma of divorce and throwing lavish parties to celebrate. Reporter Ayshah Tull finds out if divorce culture and women taking multiple husbands is as empowering as it sounds.
Subscribe to our channel for more Unreported World episodes / unreportedworld .
In Mauritania it’s thought half of all women here get divorced at least once. In this West African country, steeped in Islamic heritage, local tribal traditions have normalised the practice of women ditching their husbands with many remarrying multiple times.
In the historic city of Chinguetti, Tull meets Teslem Milid who at the age of 26-years-old is about to celebrate divorce number four. With music, dancing and social media, Teslem announces to prospective husbands that she’s on the market. Most marriages here are still arranged by the women's parents, but Teslem says she’s determined to find husband number five herself. As the dust settles on the party Tull hears from Teslem’s mother, also divorced, that cutting the knot here still isn't without its risks.
Travelling from the desert to the capital, Nouakchott. Tull discovers the unintended legacy of divorce, including the high levels of divorced mothers struggling to feed their children. But despite the challenges some have found a way to support each other by creating a divorce economy.

It’s always the man’s fault ain’t it? And the kids suffer.
I can marry a divorcee or a single mother.
Marriage is not game that you get in when it’s good and jump out when in hard times.
Any society where divorce is celebrated should be the last place u got to find a wife.
As society becomes more matriarchal, the women become more promiscuous, divorce rates go up, single motherhood goes up, and the society stops progressing.

There's no such thing as a perfect marriage or relationship; they're all unique. What makes one person happy might not make another person happy. But I've found out that there's always a way to fix things. Five years ago, my wife and I were almost divorcing because we had problems in our marriage, but we managed to sort them out. It was a tough period, but we survived.

I really get why what you're saying matters, and I honestly want to find happiness too. I've got a partner, and even though we're not together right now, I can't imagine life without her; my love for her is strong. I really miss her, and I'm fully committed to bringing her back. We've explored different paths, like therapy, to fix things.

Yes and no. Some are married off young but not all.
As an African too we've grown up in settings where our mothers and grandmas knew how to press those buttons and thorough beatings! We didn't leave.
Imagine if all women get shouted at in marriages, do we just walk out? She's looking for her 3rd husband, darling, the first two men can't be that wrong.
At times we need patience and proper hidaya in our lives because divorce isn't something to be happy about all the time. What about children sired in all those marriages? The cycle will continue as long as some of these women have glorified divorce to be a norm!
You also saw the woman who was divorced while pregnant and her child is now 4 weeks? There's no child support but this one got divorced because of being shouted at? Naaaaah..

Maybe you misunderstood me. I meant while growing up under those women who resolved matters through beatings and yelling, we endured it and learnt alot too hence the strictness that they had made some people upright! I meant that if we handled that, can't someone bear some sabr? Some women in marriages really know how to yell and shout at their children and husbands. Communication is off. We've been raised differently and shouting at someone shouldn't be condoned as there are proper ways of handling issues but it shouldn't bring about divorce.
Imagine she's looking for husband number 3 and she'll get him InShaAllah. What if she's shouted at again, how much marriages and divorce will someone go through to finally come to her senses? It boils down to your upbringing too.

I lives in Mauritania, to be realistic this country is not a place to get marry. Being a good man is not a guarantee for the survival of marriage in this country. The only thing that can make marriage stable here is for the husband to accept full control by the wife and her family members. Being a figurehead husband is the only thing that will make women comfortable to stay in the marriage.

Yes the religion allows divorce but what’s annoying is certain countries hold their cultural ways above the religion. Specifically south Asian and a few middle eastern countries frown upon divorce and the community shames you for it. It’s how our religion ALWAYS gets such a bad name when in reality our religion promotes peace and puts woman on a high pedestal. They do the complete opposite and constantly make us look horrible. I’m an African Muslim and thank goodness my country puts religion before culture. Woman would divorce their husband because he isn’t pleasing her in the bedroom lol 😂

I find this both refreshing and disturbing at the same time. I've remained single for most of my adult life after divorce and resent when I have to fill out paperwork and it lists, married, single or divorced for me to check one. I'm single period. But my honesty makes me check the box for divorced that might as well be a box that says failure, as that is how divorced is viewed in the United States, especially for women. A single mother raising her children and a single man raising his are also viewed very differently. A single mother is seen as having baggage and looking for someone else to help carry it. But a single father who has custody of his children that he's raising alone is seen as some kind of a hero and given special treatment in the workplace, because, you know, he's raising his children alone. All praise to him. The exact opposite of what a single mother faces in the workplace and in society as a whole.

I don't know about celebration but my great uncle told me that is very normal. In rural communities' women had value for their labour. So marrying a woman meant free labour and losing a woman meant loss of free labour. Divorce didn't become a problem until women only stayed home to take care of the children and it became a matter of ego rather than survival.
The irony is half of the women now are breadwinners but still never claimed their leverage.
Ps before you celebrate Mauritanian 'feminism' you might want to look up how they force-feed their daughters like geese for pate. When it comes to misogyny the calls often come from inside the house.

They have a children’s prison there, so that tells you everything you need to know about this culture. Statistics don’t lie and both the women and men are selfish and very far from Islam. This “documentary” is another Western propaganda, where they are promoting divorce in other societies, when they are seeing the results of single mums and the effects on the children in the West. Divorce should never be celebrated! What message are they sending to the children? Lack of education, marriage counselling, responsibilities of elders in the community and accountability.

@@ChadLuca Khula or khul is Islamic divorc of woman. The evidence for that from the Sunnah is that the wife of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammaas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I do not find any fault with Thabit ibn Qays in his character or his religious commitment, but I do not want to commit any act of kufr after becoming a Muslim.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her, “Will you give back his garden?” Because he had given her a garden as her mahr. She said, “Yes.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Thabit: “Take back your garden, and divorce her.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5273).

When I saw Muslim women covering themselves and appearing to live a God - conscious life, I considered studying and practicing Islam. My experience with studying and practicing Islam, was the reality that the morality taught about Islam, was that I could not EXPERIENCE MORALITY through the practice of Islam.
Muslim men can have 4 wives and can have unlimited divorces. What good is MORALITY when men can have unlimited divorces from 4 women, remarrying 4 women after relinquishing his marriage vows to his wives, one or more at any time.
In the practice of Islam, Women can divorce as many times as possible to relinquish her marriage vows to re-marry over and over again.
What good is MORALITY when men and women PRACTICE INFIDELITY??????????
I have returned to Our Holy Lord and Saviour, Yahushua, Most High since a failed marriage by Islamic practice. Our Holy Lord and Saviour, Yahushua, Most High is the way to the SALVATION for mankind, through Our Holy Father, Yahweh, Most High.

❤❤Thank you so much for showing us the survival mechanism of these brave souls. As you already know in some countries divorce happens to be a devastating loss of good reputation. It leads to generational poverty, alienation and self blame. Keep up the good work!!!

I love this documentary and ones like it that focus on unique cultures from around the world. It's what I've always wanted to do and create as a world traveler. Why do some Mauritanians in the video speak Arabic and other French? Is it just based on the region they're in or from?

    • @mariaa0031
      @mariaa0031 25 днів тому +2

They all speak their own arabic dialect which is the official language of the country, and some also speak french due to the country being colonized by france so this language is still being used in media and by a big part of the people who are well educated.

      @GOTravelhannel 24 дні тому

In Africa it's like that. Locals are free to speak colonizers languages if they want but mostly local dialects

I personally think Mauritania culture is so liberating, no stigma or shame on being divorced or not being married. Most women spend most of their life time chasing after marriage, whilst the Mauritanians run from it. I do think there’s a level of hurt and pain they go through despite the divorce celebrations, but women all over the world can learn a few things from them. That divorce doesn’t mean you are damaged goods and that your life is over, it is actually an opportunity to start a new life and be optimistic about the future and be free. This is in no way to condone divorce but to move away from the limiting stigma of divorce in our societies.

Tbh I think this stigma is mostly in the west world. Alhamdulilah in Muslim world especially in Africa or east Africa divorce is not stigmatised and in Islam as both spouse can divorce each other it’s the best solution in some cases.

I watched the entire video, I’m referring to the part of the video that says they marry young mainly due to poverty and there’s interventions to try and escape early marriage. As much as some Mauritanians parents encourage early marriage some parents are against it and send their girl child to activities that keeps the girl child away so that they enter marriage when they feel they want to and not because of societal pressures.

Same male child who is a product of these broken home grew up to marry these women and the circle of broken home continues. There should be serious teaching to the men and women how to manage family and relationship. There are hard and soft times. There is a leader in a family. U must submit to that leader. That leader in turn is a leader and should learn what it takes to lead. If everyone things they are equal in the eyes of family then challenges emerge

Marriage is SOLELY to protect the rights of women and children.
But if you're married to hillary clinton and feminism you'll always be in bondage.
Fyi marriage is about teaming up with your best friend. If you dont know that you have interpersonal relationship problems
