    When you see doctors crying because they know that the children are either going to die from the pollution now or dying of it later, that's when you really feel the hopelessness setting in..So sad..

      Things have drastically changed since then. Mongolia, post 2019, recovered a lot and now is lowering the consumption of charcoal. The Russian Government have decided to put a gas pipeline that'll go under Mongolia and join China. On its route, the gas pipeline will distribute gas to Mongolian homes and that will reduce pollution by a big margin. Things are going really well now.

    Hello everyone, I'm a Mongolian and this doc really inspired me to study Health Promotion and Public Health. It saddens me to see that climate change has affected all parts of the world and it affects our health one way or another. I wish to work as Public Health professional and find ways to improve air quality and the environment for Mongolians to live in in their capital. I now study in Australia, doing a Bachelor of Health Sciences. I wish to return home as soon as possible and start working professionally to tackle these issues that will, if solved, save many infant lives. We need to switch from coal and make electricity cheaper, build appropriate housing for the ger district with running water, and use funds from governments wisely to invest against environmental pollution. There are many sectors involved and everything depends on everything the sectors do together. There will be a chain reaction. This will take time and I hope I can contribute with I have learnt once I return home. Missing Mongolia.
    Much love to my country

    • @novaklosquadro
      @novaklosquadro 4 роки тому +22

      I really commend you for this awesome comment. Seeing this video has caused me to atleast start prayng about the issue.
      Unee, I am from america, but would you read a comment I left to another person and tell me if this statement is accurate, based solely from this video?
      Comment:
      "Having never watched or heard of anything like this problem (specifically in Mongolia), just based off of what they said in the video, it seems like these are the issues (in chronological order)
      1. Climate change is causing issues with the traditional or rural life style of some Mongolian natives, or those who live in the countryside.
      2. This is leading people from being able to procure their own food/homestead into being forced to move into the cities, where there a home, and consequently, a place to actually earn a living and therefore also be able to buy food.
      3. Because SO MANY people are moving into the cities (40,000 people are forced from rural areas, into this city per YEAR- from the video) so rapidly, there is not enough time to develope the housing/energy infrastructure to meet these needs.
      This is not a political statement, and I know nothing much of Mongolia. I live in eastern USA, but this is just what I gathered front the video. To finish the last chapter of the book I'm writing as this comment, I will fairly say, I think this is a huge problem. I have a child as old as some in this video, and it is heartbreaking to see this, and i am making a decision to figure out how i could help impact this already. Just remember, while climate change is a big issue (POLITICALLY) let's remember who people are. I would love to see these people be able to live in balance with the earth again, not strugglng to survive on it. Balance means fighting for what's right, and not just electing people who are going to fix some issues (climate change) but ignore or even promote other problems (killing/destroying unborn children, probly not unlike those with systemic issues in the video)
      We all need to make the world a better place. God created this earth, and we need to be good with what he has given us. He sent His son Jesus to die for us, to spread His love, and His faith. I hope I answered your question, even though I tacked on my opinion."
      Unee, I want you to know that I AM PRAYING for your education, school, and your commitment to help with this terrible, devastating situation. I send love and prayers from America, to Australia or wherever you are right now!

    Russia has plenty of natural gas right next door. If Daddy Vladdy wanted to do a genuine humanitarian PR move, he might send a pipeline to allow Mongolia to develop economically and they could export more of their coal to places that have clean coal technology. What a sad situation. Truly heartbreaking.

    • @elijahstein
      @elijahstein 6 років тому +83

      Russia's economic struggle can be largely blamed on sanctions from the west. China and Russia are on pretty good terms. They could work together to help this neighbor. This is all just wishful thinking though.

    • @Maria29G
      @Maria29G 6 років тому +42

      Of course Russia could do that, but trust me when I say that while it might be a good PR move for the international community, it will also be a huge blow to Putin's popularity in Russia. Don't underestimate the western sanctions, most of Russia's exports go to Europe, the people are poor enough that seeing the government support another country's economy basically pro bono will just cripple the trust in the government. TL;DR Putin definitely will not do that

    We do have trees, its just that in winter they lose their leaves, so they cant carry out photosynthesis and clean the air. Winter is the worst season and considering thats half the year, its pretty bad. We even have laws where parents are obligated to carry their children in their arms outside because the really polluted air is heavier and stays at ground level. I remember once my aunt had to stay at our summer house an hour outside the city because her newborn child was at risk of respitory infection. My 2,3 year old cousins constantly have health problems and one of my relatives had throat cancer. It never used to be like this in my childhood and its slowly seeping into our lives. I am really thankful that you brought this to attention.

    I’ve studied Mongolia a lot, and was always so interested in something that was once the most powerful empire in the world. How absurd, that it has turned into this due to the lack of the government’s care. They have coal as their only resort for now. The government has to fix this, and all it takes is just hard work and simple measures like for example, solar panels. It will be hard to fix this but it’s such a big problem, so they should start working on it. Immediately. why can’t they even breathe air? The earth has turned this way due to us and all we can do is record, film, comment, try to seem smart by commenting different options or seeming pitiful. I do it too, but I am genuinely worried about these places. Is there any way we can actually fix these problems instead of talking about the shitty government or the concerns?

      - qt idk what to do but my family members have found some other ways to keep warm aside from using coal and that has put the coal use down at least a little bit. However I doubt that most people can afford a lot and where my family and friends were from were the richer parts so they had cleaner coal. I doubt they’d help others who are struggling though

I just don't know how this problem can be solved..

    A simple poverty problem but so many people here blaming on the coal. Just ask yourself, giving their poor financial state, without coal, how do people survive the cold? Look around, no grass, no trees, and certainly can't afford electricity.

    • @sophiejones7727
      @sophiejones7727 6 років тому +25

      well you know, there are cleaner ways of producing heat than raw coal. However, the actual solution to this problem is simply for the government to build an electric grid and get everyone one it. The question is: how to 1) afford that and 2) get enough people organized to actually do that. Maybe it's just me, but that minister sounded like he had an idea.
      Regardless, how to effect political change 101:
      tell a woman that she's having reproductive problems because of external factors
      tell a father his kids aren't safe.
      put so many babies in the hospital that the nurse cries.
      Normally UW reports on cases that are pretty hopeless. There are a lot of possible futures for Mongolia, but continuing like this isn't one of them.

The farmers would also benefit from greenhouses to grow hay. Imagine when these kids that have lung problems throughout their lives grow up incapable of joining the work force due to health issues. I've been to Ulaanbaatar myself, and all I can tell is this is a serious problem there. The biggest problems keeping city air polluted are geography, coal and insane amount of vehicles as per I saw. The city is surrounded by mountains which keeps to pollutants inside the city. The people use coal extensively for heating. Also I saw some coal power plants inside the city that could seriously contribute to the problem. The traffic in the city is insane. It looks like almost everybody ride a car there. The congestion is unbearable so sometimes we walked instead trapping inside a taxi or a bus for hours. No doubts all the pollutants made by the cars are also contributing to the problem. I hope Mongolia could solve their problem in the future.

      The Mongolian empire wasn't as big as it was because of superior knowledge, fine politics or the rule over all trade between regions. No, they simply knew how to conquer by force and stay in control by having the right people in charge of the conquered areas. Their armies were superior compared to those of their opponents and they were quick to get around. If you actually look into the fall of the empire you will see that it was a rather quick thing. They never established major settlements in their conquered regions and resumed the nomad life. It's not like they were a major super power even in the 15th century anymore. A rapid rise to glory mostly thanks to Genghis Khan and a rapid fall to become just another topic briefly discussed in history classes.

    • @Angie-gp9xb
      @Angie-gp9xb 6 років тому +33

      Coal is bad for the environment, but it is cheap. The infrastructure needed to find/create and process coal is already in place all around the world; in contrast, the infrastructure needed for cleaner energy sources does not exist in many countries, and would require very high capital and time investment to create.
      Implementing clean energy is also very difficult if you think about the politics of it. Creating clean energy facilities throughout the country would take several decades. During this construction phase, not only is the government losing money to pay for the project, but many people who work in coal-related industries will lose their jobs, creating political discontent. Additionally, both the government and its citizens would not be able to reap any health/environmental benefits from the facility until years--maybe even decades--after the CONSTRUCTION of the facility.
      Meanwhile, the average political term is, what? 8 years? 10? A leader can implement a clean energy plan, but if her constituents do not gain anything from it by the time it's re-election season (and they most likely won't), they will vote for someone else, and the plan will fall through.
      TL;DR: coal is cheap. Clean energy isn't--at least, not at first. And most people don't have the funds, or the patience, to support a multi-decade clean energy project.

      They've increased the number of hospital beds for children, and invested in some air purifiers in these wards. The government has also pledged to invest in clean energy, and in 2013, approved of a plan to redevelop the gers (the coal burning tents) into apartments--but these plans have been put on hold due to a rising economic crisis. So in summary: not much, but you can't really blame them when they just don't have the money for it.

      Um, no. I’m a young teen and I have 0 qualifications wth am I supposed to do? The real problem is poverty as a whole not the 1st world countries, it all stems back to the history of modern Mongolia, they were conquered by the Qing Dynasty and after that when they gained independence and the Qing fell the Soviets promised them democracy and freedom for the workers, of course that was not true and Mongolia just became another puppet country of the Soviets. Ever since they broke free from the communist regime they’ve been left poor and with bad infrastructure. This has led to the poverty you see in this video which is the real problem, it also doesn’t help that the country is landlocked and the capital city is surrounded by mountains which makes air circulation even worse.

      lol what you on about i'm talking about the million tonns of waste WE produce; cuz guess what everything in our lives that we don't even think about is causing pollution, simply cutting down of unnecessary waste in our lives could help even if it's smallest change, if these countries are so poor and in poverty that makes it our responsibility to help them out, pushing their governments to pass certain laws to help it's citizens and the planet. NOTHING will happen if we sit on our asses and go "how sad...someone should do something about that" you dont have to single handedly save the world from climate change but you can take steps to help make a change because believe it or not change comes when people work together

      Why is everyone willing to pay for fossile fuels, but when it comes to renewables it have to be free? Mongolia has so much sunshine year round as its a mostly arid place. Its the governments fault to not invest into the right energy forms

    Oh my god this is so incredibly sad and depressing. Those poor people and their children and animals. This really puts things in perspective and makes our problems seem so minuscule.

    Watching this from New Delhi during the year end when crop fires from neighboring states and fireworks from Diwali are at peak. This is totally relatable.
