i cried when the piano boy played the piece for his friend, its just so sad
The piece is nocturne in c# minor by Chopin. It's a haunting and brilliant piece by the greatest piano composer to ever live. That kid is a amazing talent on piano, I hope it takes him far in life

In the Middle Ages, Baghdad was the cultural center of the world - the equivalent of London or New York today. Great scientists, engineers, musicians, poets, dancers even fashion designers walked its streets without fear and people from all of the world lived and studied there. I hope that it will rise again one day and people like these kids can follow their dreams in peace.

Religion isn't the problem. You will never get rid of it. The problem is allowing religion to be the political regime. No religion should be making laws for any country or state. Maybe in a commune. A religion, by definition, has to do with a personal choice. It never binds laws to others outside yourself. Extremists are not religious, they are terrorists. Religion is not a choice to them, it is simply a means to control others. So you can't even say that this religion is wrong if people choose and practice it freely. It's when it is enforced on a population who does not all believe and practice the same way. The sad part is they could be proud of their people creating talented world class dancers but they choose to make everything about the current politics, which they use religion as a weapon of control. Religious extremists should be exterminated. Religion should be out of politics, and politicians should never be paid one cent for what they do. That's how you stop corruption in government and have people in power who actually care about the people they serve and protect.

Feon Jun when I was in Iraq I got to meet and get to know a lot of families. A lot of them were very grateful for the invasion because they had family members killed by Saddam and his regime because religious persecution and things like that the soccer team didn’t win.
Again, it's complex and it does sound like a coward's way of offering an opinion on my end. However, truth is truth and the policy of the U.S. send the end of WW2 haven't been healthy for a lot of regions of the world. Lets not forget that Saddam was supported by the U.S. until the invasion, which had to do more with him switching the Euro for Iraq's oil rather than the grand liberty. Rather it was victim of Saddam or the current victim of the chaos, who's to say what's right. If anyone would look at recent history, the region was shifting to secularism, but it would have been that the west wouldn't be able to control the oil.

Thanks to the "civilised" us & uk it's in danger now, as all other civil institutions in Iraq. The US and UK succeeded unfortunately in dividing Iraqis by imposing a sectarian regime and system that acts on nothing but vengeance and personal profits. 15 years has gone since the American invasion and iraq is still bleeding of death, destruction and hate
It wasn't just one man, it was americans and their war. America manipulated their people into destroying Iraq and Afghanistan.
It was already a violent and somewhat destroyed place when Saddam and his regime were in power. I agree that the Bush and Obama administrations fucked up the country exceedingly badly, but Saddam, his administration, and the extreme zealots (Sunnis and Shias) also destroyed the country as well. I think religion should be blamed for most of the destruction.

As a ballerina, my heart aches for these passionate ballerinas and ballerinos, especially Leezan. She's so passionate, but she'll definitely do much better with better training. I hope that they will no longer be oppressed from doing what they love.
This is so true. I’m a former dancer and stopping dancing took the one freedom I felt I had. It truly is our way of expressing our minds and souls in ways others don’t understand

Ultimately it boils down to the sexual repression and ignorance that is the norm in too many countries including western puritanism that is on the rise unfortunately. Ballet has never been a sensual art. In fact it is very regimented and strict in discipline. Voluptuous bodies are not allowed at all either in this modern time. The irony is belly dance is most excellent with a Voluptuous figure with graceful sensuality and expression. 🤔 They are very stylistically opposite.

I can tell Leezan & everyone in that school are keeping Ali's spirit well and alive. It's beautiful. Singing, dancing, painting, drawing or creating music is one of the oldest coping mechanisms. I don't know if ballet has a history tied to it sexualizing women or men, but I don't see how it could.

It's unfortunate that this girl's potential as a ballerina was not fully realized due to lack of opportunity and resources. With the right training and support, she could have honed her skills and achieved great success in the world of dance. Sending her to a better school abroad could have opened up new opportunities for her and allowed her to reach her full potential. It's a sad reminder of how important access to quality education and training is in pursuing one's dreams.

I found an article from 2016 (2 years after this was filmed) about how the school was facing funding issues and there is a quote from Leezan in this doc, seems she did stay to become an instructor afterall. She even appears to have a twitter account, though sadly its tweets are protected.

I agree, Iraq was like that before. Yet, when extremists surfaced, none of the neutral religious leaders or Imams dared to stand against them because you already said it, there are verses in Quran that justify their actions. Look at Turkey who was 100% secular and is now turning gradually into more of Islamic culture thanks to their prime minister. Once you allow the Islam to have certain power, believe me it is not going to matter whether you are extremist or not, or you are in Malaysia or Middle East.

Im from Iraq, this is an old documentary, back to 2005-2008, they revelling it last year, Baghdad is a bit safe now and no fair as it was in 2007. At this moment I don't think this will have effect on them.
This young girls technique is not to the standards of a ballerina but she should be very proud of her bravery and I wish her the best in pursuit of her dream
It takes a lot of courage to pursue your dreams, especially in a highly competitive field like ballet. This young girl's passion and determination are commendable, and with hard work and dedication, she may be able to achieve her goals. It's important to remember that everyone starts somewhere, and even the most successful dancers had to begin with their first plié. Thanks to the "civilised" west led by US &UK, it's in danger now, as all other civil institutions in Iraq. Im surprised to see any people there since most of its staff and student either left iraq or got killed during the American occupation.
For your information this was seen as one of the best school in the country and many students and their families aspired to have their children there me included!

I'm glad you don't by your government b.s. But I think you missed my point, there were no danger in making the school as it was in late 60's, the danger came with the American invasion which changed the Iraqi mentality as well as whole life.

We were indeed a Muslim country and we saw no contradiction between Islam and progress in all it's form weather it be art or science. You'd be surprised to know how Iraqis were living before the UN sanctions and American invasion. Iraq was paving the way for many countries in region.
Religious extremism and sectarianism were unknown of, and if there was any, they dared not show their faces in public!

I'm sorry that the US government became involved at all. I personally believe that our government doesn't ever take the time to learn about the culture and desires of other countries. They just assume everyone wants to live like us. They don't respect others. With all of the violence and corruption in the US, we don't want to live like this, why would anyone else? All they accomplished was to make it worse and walk away. Not that it makes a difference, but I'm sorry. I only pray that we someday get a leader who can see that our way is the right way for US and they need to respect that others have different beliefs and if we can't respect that then we need to leave others alone.

My christian parents grew up in Iraq, I even visited in very early 2000's though I can't remember much being so young. What a shame this is how its ended up :/ would've loved to visit, esp all its historical sites (that are probably rubble rn). Just sad. As a former dancer it is so helpful to dance through things. It’s the one time you can have full control over your senses and being.

I just couldn't hold my tears, the plights of all of them. The girl, boy and headmaster their parents just deal as much as they can. It's painful.

She (the dancer)is very courageous... unfortunately, her skill level (no turn-out, terrible technique & she should not be dancing on pointe-work because her feet/ankle cannot point enough to get on her actual toes. She should never have been put on pointe in the first place because her ankles & technique are too weak & thus she is at a huge risk for permanent &/or chronic injury. In addition, she will never get into any pre-professional ballet school unless someone there is willing to take an enormous risk/chance on her. It is more than likely that the qualifications of the teachers there are just not up to par. It makes sense, because people who are classically trained at a high level would most often, never go to a place where their art & passion were not possible. It’s a tough situation for all involved & it is also sad that so much talent is waisted

I am a ballet dancer from the netherlands I am 18 and have been dancing for 13 years I would love to teach other people about it. Being free to do what you want should be normal!!

I know firsthand how this level of freedom I experience has been taken for granted, especially in the western countries. When is see these children I just want to wrap my arms around them and bring them home with me so they can pursue their dreams in safety! The older I get the less I understand this world. May God put His shield of protection around them all.

When Leezan performed toward the end, it brought tears to my eyes - what passion in a sad situation.

Sadly, most girls here are better than that 17 year old by the time they are 8 or 9 yrs old. It would be very difficult to become good over there because there is no competition & it can be difficult to see high-quality professionals. It’s wonderful that girls & boys alike have the opportunity to be exposed to all types of learning there.

Two things, now I feel ashamed I was too shy to dance at my job's holiday party, when these students can't. Also, I gave my son over $40 'pocket money' for what he needed to do yesterday and he didn't say thank you to me either (like her, in the car) so I feel better that its worldwide teen behavior. Kids not saying "thank you" to their dads in Iraq is very normal and kinda part of their culture. Dads think it's their responsibility to spend money on their kids and not necessarily wait for a thank you.
I have been doing ballet since I was a year and six months old, I have seen boys and men during recitals wolf whistle and it was very unsettling. Then to hear afterwards the same people calling us dancers horrible names, and once a man went up to me and asked my religion, I told them I was a Christian, he told me to transfer.But I soon found out the man that came up to me, from a friend, said that dancers were seductresses and called what we did a sin. I just dance, with deaf ears to the insults and a smile on my face. Dancing is a passion to some and saying that this art form is a sin is just unsettling.
