I seen my high school biology teacher about 10 years after high school, and he asked me what i do now, i told him i work in concrete construction and he laughed at me too, and than he said to me " i bet your wishing you would have payed attention in class... i smiled back and told him to have a good day. But i didnt tell him that i own the company ,have 9 employees, not only am i feeding my family with this, but 9 other families as well, and the fact that i could make more in 1 year than he will make in 10 years. Its funny that the people that are suppose to build us up, are the same ones draggin us down

Spikee Donut hey brother, also a senior in high school, and I attend a “ Vo-Tech “ every day during school. I at first wanted to be a gas mechanic but as I started looking more in depth I found that my real passion is diesel mechanics. Some important things to remember are,
      1. Yes more often than not diesel mechanics do make more than gas mechanics. Not all the time but a lot of the time.
      2. Although diesel and gas engines are different they are kind of the same as in they both still have to have the 3 basic principles for a car to run. Fuel, Compression, Spark. I would also recommend getting familiarized with diesel engines, if it at all interests you.
      3. As I mentioned with getting familiarized with Diesel engines, even though they are somewhat the same as gas engines but not really. One of the main differences is that a diesel fuel injected system injects diesel fuel directly into the cylinder where as in a gas engine a carburetor or port injection is used to inject fuel.
      4. The most important advice I can give and trust me I may be a senior but I have been preached this my entire life is DO WHAT YOU WANT. The money WILL always be there because there is such a shortage in every trade. Don’t go where the moneys at because 9 times out of 10 you’ll hate your job. Do what you have a passion for. Weather it be Marine Mechanics, diesel, gas... etc

@@4marky yeah I really loved how you explained this whole thing. You really given me a better understanding I'm in 11th grade and I'm kinda afraid to become an auto mechanic because electric cars are now being made.

    • @4marky
      @4marky 4 роки тому +5

Jason Watson no problem! And I completely understand. Electric cars are becoming bigger and bigger nowadays, but don’t worry when/ if you get on at a shop, you normally will go through training every once in awhile to stay familiarized with it. And also we have quite awhile before hybrids completely take over. For the most part there will always (hopefully) be both gas, electric cars. So if that is the only thing preventing you from pursuing this then don’t worry about it at all. All the pieces will fall into place eventually, trust me. I hope you go to do great thing with your life!

As a teacher it kills me to hear that other teachers are not encouraging students to work hard and do what you love (even if it doesn't include college). I worked at a muffler/radiator shop right after HS and kept at it for a few years...it helped put me through college and gave me the work ethic that I carry with me today (20+ yrs later). I try to instill that work ethic in all my students.👍 Nothing but RESPECT for the blue collar work force!🤘👍💪

The more you weld the more you network and you'll have a bunch of opportunities some like working on the pipelines or being an aerospace welder. the money is there for all the different specifics of welding you just need to find the one that interests you the most. be humble and always be willing to learn. only thing i can say. best of luck buddy. also try to get yourself a small starter welding job (like mig welding) while you're in school for it. it'll definitely put you ahead in your classes and in front of your classmates. techniques from mig transfer and help you understand and be able to better your other types of welding

You have a great message. Certainly, the trades are not for everybody, but they are jobs that need to be done and cannot be outsourced to other countries such as programming, engineering, or management jobs. They also don't require an expensive degree, as you said buy some tools to get started and upgrade them along the way. When someone needs a plumber, electrician, carpenter, mason, or any other trades person it has to be someone who shows up at their door and completes the work, not call into some support center somewhere to fix it over the phone.

I hate when people think blue collar jobs won't get you anywhere. I am currently a freshman in college but it's not a 4 year college and a basic course. I am in diesel technology at a junior college so other than tools, it's only about $25,000 for both years unlike a university that is $40,000 for one year. Everyone needs diesel techs right now and one company has an offer for us students at that school, that deal is to start as an apprentice (which I actually think is a great way to start out of college) and they will reimburse me up to $30,000 for college and give me about $20,000 worth of tools that I can keep, wages start at $17.50 an hour plus a bunch of benefits on top of that. This company also believes in family time and weekends and that type of stuff so I am definitely hoping I can get hired by this company.
Also I have been working on getting a UA-cam channel started and so far I'm only at 9 subscribers and I spend a minimum of 3-4 hours editing and uploading to UA-cam to get less than 30 views and no likes. I understand the struggles of being a UA-camr. I just need to work on finding more content in my life that would be interesting to watch. Plus I need a better camera. But I'll get there eventually. Here is some food for thought, what if those teachers wanted you to prove them wrong? As a 2nd year teacher I find myself thinking I might have to do this eventually. Sometimes I think I might have to say this to some of my students to light a fire under their ass to get motivated and do well in life. I took the role of a teacher because I didn't want kids to have the same unfair treatment I got as a student. I do believe that education after high school is a must, but that doesn't mean college. It could mean going into a trade or finding a different path to advance your position. Granted there are some teachers that are ignorant but I will not be one of them. I paid my own way through college working in construction and landscaping, I did everything from building concrete forms, welding, pipe fitting, operating heavy equipment, etc. Of all the hard labor jobs I had, teaching is the hardest; the constant stress and frustration in some of the students they know are smart but they don't put the effort to what they can do. Maybe that's what some of those teachers saw in you? Although they had a narrow mindset thinking college is the only way. So give a break on some of those teachers, they maybe proud you proved them wrong.

Very inspiring, I told my teachers the same in 1984. I went into the trucking company. I was female and owned my own company at 19 yrs old. I've brought in $250,000 a year. I'm retired at 50 yrs old. Blue collar work is just fine. I made my money in farming through high school. I borrowed 30 thousand at age 14 for farm expenses. I think I did good for female in the Male dominated business.

Calvin Pettet first It would probably be easier to get on with a company that does their own equipment maintenance. I’d say learn as much as you can, about all the equipment they have.
If you can find a mobile tech job it’s the most fun I’ve had. And mobile techs make the most money because the hours and they pay more in my area atleast.
I believe caterpillar has a school and John Deere has a school too
3 things to make sure you learn if you want to make $$$$$$ in equipment.
Learn AG equipment, line boring(a dieing art really) and welding.
Those 3 things on a resume will make you worth more than most other guys.

Going to get my cdl when I turn 21.

I was fortunate enough to go to a high school where they just wanted you to succeed no matter your decision college or not. They still pushed you to go out and get some type of higher education college or tech school. They were so open with trade schools and college and made sure to inform us on the options. I appreciate it so much. I had a clear view on what I wanted to do. I took the college option though, because it made more sense to me and what I want to do. I understand the pros and cons of both. I appreciate both routes as well.
