Man, you have all the projects you need at the moment.
No shit huh...all the trucks at his house and only one runs...nothing ever gets finished...I don’t know how someone could operate like that. I would thoroughly enjoy a video that showcases greg completely finishing a project.
D H he’s like Bruce wilson
I started with a narrow nose Pete in 1970 when I got back from Nam. I took my money and vested in a truck and not being a long haul driver (too young for the experience) and only thing that saved me was I got hit in the frontend by a dock machine that killed it sheetmetal wise. I got my monthly payments covered and then something powerful intervened. A man who was a major logger in the area approached me with if we fix then you haul for us and we guarantee your truck payments. I couldn't shake his hand quick enough as I loved the truck like a girlfriend kinda. Come home with the new style doors, handles in the corner, chrome air filters, Wide nose hood, and radiator, all engine components working good again. The man was good of his word and kept me almost too busy. I finished the hand shake and stayed till a divorce cost me my truck and home. I couldn't live in a conventional and so I sold it to a fellow who had his eye on it for a long time and I had over three hundred thousand an no in frame or transmission work, second clutch but almost same water as it came with it felt like as it just ran and ran. I had a five and four so it wasn't the most popular but in and out, it was always clean and right... kept things right on it all the way and learned enough to keep my nose out of trouble. Years later tried it again and fell in love with a dark grey K.W. with large sleeper, 3406, thirteen and a air shift four speed brownie and with two speed rears and slider fifth wheel. I just knew that would be home! I got a bowling ball through the windshield that if my girlfriend had been setting there would of died. It went through the glass off the hood and into the sleeper just under her. I got top money for the truck and was going to go hunting for a while.... but she talked me out of it. We went to alaska and spent a good life together but something always takes my girl away so she has been gone now close to eleven years. I am a cripple and watch you build stuff and get a lot excited so thanks for sharing
The “steam” from the coolant reservoir most likely compression in the cooling system from either a cracked cylinder head, blown head gasket, or the air compressor pushing compression into the cooling system. I’d unhook/ block off the air compressor coolant lines and if compression in the coolant goes away, all you need is a compressor! Unfortunately it’s usually a head gasket from lack of compression on the gasket due to the cylinder liners wearing down into the block.
It's got a brand new head on it so most likely it's got liner protrusion issue or a compressor
@Andy Armstrong ,, the crankcase blowby is a much more serious issue ,,this engine has had an overheating issue Hence the PULLED THERMOSTATS ,,the crankcase blow by is caused by compression loss through the piston rings ,and listening to it running my ears tell me it has at least 2 cylinders that are not up to spec
the new cylinder head may be the result of something like a dropped valve although not common with cat engines
much more suspect that it overheated and had a cracked head ,,and i'd be willing to bet it's got a cracked sleeve too ,,could be a warped block ,or just a bad headgasket ,,reason i wouldn't suspect the compressor is because it looks like a new one
Down here in Australia if someone says "Ive never missed a gear in my life" clearly have only ever driven automatics.
Nice clutchless changes mate.
We call that floating gears in the states.
My bmodel cat was doing the same thing with an overflow, definitely a blown head gasket, also to do a front main seal is $2,500 minimum and that’s not through cat
Blowby is not bad, not great, but not bad. I agree with Evan about the head gasket. It needs the liner protrusion checked when the head is off for the gasket. Might have to shim up a liner to get things into line so that head gaskets will stay put. ;-)
Cheers all
If liner protrusion is close to the minimum CAT sells a .0015” thinner spacer plate. Usually new liners and the thinner plate brings them to the top of spec. Right around .005”-.006” protrusion. I would only shim if they aren’t square in the block.
Should be able to get front and rear done for less than that
Are we gonna get to see what Sendit and Mamma’s good flat shovel are up to on this trip?
KT3406E is local to you in Kentucky and seems to not mess around. Maybe you two could do a collab
Beat me to it
Dude dose some very nice work from the looks of his videos. But he don’t seem cheap at all. No cat builder is.
I've talked to him about my truck a couple of times. That dude knows his shit!
Travis I like his stuff cuz he’s a younger fella that don’t mess around with the white sunglasses and flat brim hat crap. Seems to have a head on his shoulders and knows the score. Be cool to see Greg and him work together and make that thing a power monster
I wouldn't touch it if steam coming out of the coolant overflow tube
Steam bath option.
you can rebuild it. derp
But an expensive tho. If the head is new and compression is getting into the coolant means a cracked block. derp
keep in mind that the air compressor uses engine coolant for cooling. if the seal goes bad, it can put air pressure into the cooling system causing that over flow tube to do just what you saw. i have never seen one push air into the crank case through the oil return but i suppose it is possible. that could cause the heavy blow-by also. could have been misdiagnosed when they put the head on. disconnect both in and out coolant hoses from the compressor and connect to each other or pinch them off. start the truck and look for the symptoms to go away. does the truck shut right off when you turn the key off or does it continue to spin for a few revolutions? one of the detectable differences in a tight engine and a worn out engine. it sure fired up like a "tight" engine. hard to tell in the video.
Having your dog always ride with you even on the ole forklift. Mans best friend.
That steam comming out of the radiator vent tube could be a head gasket issue, possible cracked liner, or a cracked cylinder head. Best thing to do is use a napa block checker and verify if it's getting combustion gas in the cooling system. If so, you need to determine the the source, either way the outcome is an engine tear down and with 700,000 miles it's time for new lines and a liner protrusion check. Block may need to have counterbores cut and have shims stacked under the liner. 😬 Might be time for a Platinum overhaul.
Another cool old trick I was taught, on a cold start you can grab the exhaust manifold and feel for weaker cylinders because they’ll create less heat. Causing that part of the manifold to heat up slower.
If it’s pressurizing the coolant tank it’ll be either air compressor head leaking or head gaskets, do a combustion leak test on the coolant tank and that’ll tell you immediately which it is, on the blow by deal, a lot of these trucks have blow by and run perfectly fine, see if you can find if it’s ever been rebuilt, but it sounds like it runs fine
Gotta make sure heads have been worked and the block needs to b faced to make sure heads get a solid flat surface. Love them kitty’s!
If he buys this truck gonna have to start calling him bruce 😂
Oh thats not nice. At least he knows what he's doing.
@@Thunder-iu6ev lmao chop shop greg a
@@dill5500 least he has finished projects and they still run.
@@dill5500 I think you got that backwards it's chop shop Bruce hahaha
Also if Greg stops buying project trucks I will get worried.
Yay! Greg's gonna have a 4x4 first gen! Thats awesome i miss my dads first gen but it was toast the cab was junk the trans was toast but the 12v was mint that was a fun truck. Dump box 4x4 extended cab with a 10' blizzard snow plow
Greg if I were you I’d get in touch with the UA-camr named ADEPT APE, he’s a lead tech for a CAT shop. He knows his shit man, this is going to be a pricy rebuild on that 6NZ. But, it is one of the most sought after CAT engines. If you could afford it, I’d get it and overhaul it on the channel.
If the price is right I wouldn't be scared of any of the issues I work as a dyno tech at a cat dealer and the c15 is a very simple engine to work on and will make a ton of power with the right parts
Talk to KT3406E on UA-cam about that cat he knows a ton about them
I agree
From what I’ve seen he can build you a 800+ho reliable motor. Probably need v deep pockets tho. Don’t take a Detroit anywhere near him 😂
Yeah he’s the best I seen on here that builds cat engines
I wouldn't mess with that Pete CAT rebuild done the right way is around $20,000 just in parts alone.
I like that you didn’t use the clutch for shifting 👌🏻
its called floating gears
Much easier to shift it without the clutch. Pushing the clutch in just screws up the shift.
The roof and lights are going to be the nicest part of the truck now until the whole truck gets painted.
King of the hill Albany NY best cat mechanic
Greg you should do a video on trans temp gauge install and what normal egt ranges should be from stock to wild power levels
Here in Sk a 6NZ is worth its weight in gold! Definitely worth fixing.
Other than the obvious ( that everyone already mentioned head gasket ) , an air compressor could also pump air into the cooling system. My 6nz has 1.4 million on her .
That coolant being pushed could be a cracked or broken sleeve in the block too since the head was just replaced. Id probably run if it were me, replacing a sleeve is a big and expensive job.
So many fish eyes in the paint in that roof. Granted it will never be seen, but... dang.
Could be a combination of liner and/or liner protrusion issue on that 6NZ, but all indications are that it's tired. There's a reason a work truck isn't being put to work. Still anything can be repaired, though not everything should be.
I've seen and repaired lots of bad head gasket jobs from dealers. Need the protrusion measurements if you get a head gasket done. Big or small shops should give you they're recordings for warranty purposes.
It’s a nice truck, but when my cat did that, it was about 35k to rebuild. They said it was the piston rings and don’t quote me on this part, but I believe they also said it was an oiler that sits under every piston. A platinum rebuild kit is costly. But if you do the work yourself I would say 15k to 18k for all parts to do a rebuild on it.
Dangit GregA. You gonna have to finish some of these projects lol! 😂😂
Probably been running on straight water! There is another saying in Australia caterpillars and Cummins don’t like getting hot or running on just water ether get a warped head or electrolysis in the piston liners
That vapor/coolant coming from the overflow hose is from a blown head gasket. I just had mine blow in December 2019 with 700,000 original miles on a 2WS CAT (pretty much same engine as a 6NZ). The liners walk around in the block and the liner protrusion gets messed up. The gaskets blow between the cylinders and combustion gasses pressurize the cooling system. The bad thing about the liners moving is it does damage to the block and head. I had to have my block machined. Liners were damaged and pitted. Head needed resurfacing. Ended up doing a platinum overhaul at the cost of 18 grand
Building pressure in over flow. Head gasket, been there at that point before.
Marks white 3rd Gen is frigging awesome!!
Maybe just maybe you should finish the Pete you already have!
He will. Just takes time to get the pieces in and complete.
@@brandoncaldwell95 yeah I know. Just like he is going to finish the drag truck, the 2nd gen, the 05, the 08 the first 1st gen, the second 1st gen, the pro mod drag truck, and the swept side....
Seriously!
@@Zuk_4_life drag truck he is waiting on parts
05 is complete didnt he simply blow turbos?
1st gen simply blew the trans. Working on currently
08 he is about done.
1st gen #2 he is waiting on parts
Semi he was waiting on parts, now they are there and mark is painting them
You want someone who doesnt complete a project. Look at Bruce Wilson.
@@brandoncaldwell95 so tell me again why he needs another project?
It would make another fun truck to build Greg! But do agree with it is a little sketchy not knowing what's wrong with it.
That Pete is rougher than a stucco bathtub. Motor has cooling problems and blowby, body is beat, hood is beat, interior is green, frame may be double, but I see some ugly on the bottom of the rail. Just grab a 13 speed or 18 speed for the black Pete!
Holy hell hot rod your getting them rpms thru the roof. Shift them cats at like 1650 1700 if you want it to last
Greg’s going to need a bigger yard
Thats the Automatic steam clean option. Direct the tube at the oil leak to keep the block clean!
Run away from the 2nd 379, If a new head and gasket has been fitted and you are still getting blow by, your block is warped. Had this on one of our trucks here in New Zealand. Went through 4 head gaskets before I suggested to the boss to get the deck checked. 1 thou more would have been a new engine.
You don't need to wind that thing to 2000 rpm to shift. 1400-1500 rpm shifts are perfect
1400 are what kill cats. Cats power is 1500 to 1700. The oil pump on cat doesn't keep up at those low rpms and is why some many thinking like you send rods throw the block...
Greg likes RPM lol kitty cat supposed to be babied at 11-1200 shifts nice and slow
Awesome awesome video Greg A, you got to buy that other truck with the Cat in it. Marks paint job once again flawless and perfect as always lol. And oh yeah finally getting the 4wd swap I der way on the first gen can’t wait to see that content lol.
I think Greg should buy a Peterbilt with a 3408 cat instead
Or a c15acert compound turbos
Bill Cornwell I see a lot of those in car haulers
@@christopherspatz3991 I seen alot in cattle trucks too
The 3408 is know as the never late V8..
Got 1 in a 1981 Pete 359 long hood w/ a 5 & 4 turning 336 rears on 24.5 rubber . Got rid of " retarder & installed Jake's . Will pass ANYTHING BUT a diesel pump 3.5 - 4.9 mpg .,...
I’d walk way. To rebuild a 6nz is pricy. Your looking at $30,000 engine rebuild...
Negative, if he does it himself it can be done for less than 15 grand. Use aftermarket parts and it can be done for less than 10
@@glennrobichaux7490 yeah but guarntee he doesnt know how to do it or have all the tools.
He would do it himself. It is costly still, but overall its a good base.
@@austinfouts9139 because that has stopped him before? He can rebuild a cummins in a pick up he can rebuild a Cat.
Austin Fouts greg a will figure it out and buy everything to do it
If that shifter is right to the truck it’s an 18 speed. Red splitter is 13. Grey is 18.
Liedtka transport is a company that has been around for ages, I remember them back in the 80s all over NJ, PA, and NY. They had quite a few nice Macks back in the day. I don't see them where I live now, in VA. I've seen that before on one of those engines, likely it has a blown head gasket. $$$$$ To steal a phrase from Scotty Kilmer, "Just don't pay too much for it", it'd have to be a dirt-cheap price.
Love the Acker rig behind you used to run CME not to long ago love the content looking forward to seeing your trucks finished!
Anytime you have air coming out of the Overflow tube from the radiator that's not a good thing they should be nothing coming out of that tube except plain water if it overheats
There are junkyards all through the States full of these trucks. You must have an extra 40k to spend in that engine.
Grandpa getting a second lease on life as a 4wd. Giddy up!
i’d buy it and do a rebuild it. doesn’t need too much more work than the black one plus it’ll be a good time rebuilding the motor
That looks like an 18 speed Greg
Looks like an 18 speed to me to usually the little side splitter should be red if its a 13
Time for inframe , steam or bubbles from the coolant overflow means had cracked head or gasket
In this episode, Greg tries to get another big cat on his way to becoming Kentucky's tiger king.
I wish Greg could understand that chrome goes on big rigs
Engine running strong now, needs major help though. Price will determine if you should buy. Not worth much because you will definitely have to dig in that engine and find all the issues
Probably sunk a liner. Platinum kit for that is around 10,000$ I think.
Worth asking... how do you deal with e-logbook BS? Just noticed the northeast corridor. How often you get back to NJ?
Damn shifting like butter lol as the movie black dog it’s coming back to me haha
I hated doing those front mains lol.
That is a grey button so it is a 18 speed but I would walk away bc double frame usually mi it was a heavy haul or dirt hauler
If you got that Peterbilt at a reasonable price it might be worth being a project truck after all it is a CAT engine you don't see too many trucks with Cat engines anymore cat pulled out of the commercial truck game back in the early mid 2000s
When’s the 2nd gen making its comeback ?
At this rate, never lol
It’s so close to being done. I just want to see it complete! Love 2nd gens
I'd like to see a project just get finished. Look at the 08, just sitting there, a days worth of work away from being done
So glad to see you don't do that double clutch crap 😂 I hated it I just took my points for not doing it in the tests lol
If it's blowing steam out the dipstick tube that's bad news that cat does not like the new head that's any kind diesel motor with steam out of it out of the dipstick is not a good or the overflow for your radiator
Your getting compression in the coolant system, it could be the compressor or you got a cracked cylinder liner
If the price is right and the world goes back normal you can always rebuild it. Sell it or hire someone to pull someone Else’s trailer until it pays for itself. But a semi is like a boat once you start putting money in em it kinda never stops haha I retired driving after having a nothing semi rear ended me last year almost killing me and truck didn’t make it. The 5th wheel completely off the frame cab off the frame passenger side seat was in the dash idk howI got out lucky as I did but I don’t and do miss it lol. The worst part was I was pulling a 12ft wife unit and couldn’t see him coming and anything 12ft and under no escorts so I was blind setting because of another wreck and he somehow didn’t see the strobes and all on my truck and trailer and troopers report says he hit me 70+mph never hitting his brakes he had a 40ft container loaded with logs and over weight it was a ugly ugly wreck no one died thank god. But I’m don’t rambling lol do what makes you happy lol and don’t look back
If Caterpillars have any engine issues at all you are guaranteed a cracked head, unless it is aftermarket.
That burn out!!😂😂
If they didn't put the cat glue on the head gasket then it probably blew it or the head cats are touchy but if the price is decent enough it would still be worth it I'd like to have it use on the farm
Gonna call it for the third time.. the new first gen is gettin a sick lift at some point
I would think you’d of all people would be looking for a Cummins 600hp 2050tq the CAT 550hp 1850tq I really figured you to be a Cummins guy ISXCUMMINS. Is the way to go
My dad had a ford tractor once the had a hole in the cylinder wall and it ran fine but it would blow all the water out of the radiator
Blown head gasket they put new head but I’ll bet money they didn’t do liner protrusion and check the spacer plate.
Fucking GregJiiht AlMohammed with that shifting 😂😂😂
My like or don't like comes down to price. I'll like any 379 6nz if the price is right.
Used to love the channel but now it’s getting boring, a lot of talking, hardly any working, absolutely NO PROJECTS GETTING DONE! Finish at least ONE project! Good grief
I agree
These people take the time and aggravation to video their lives and unless you pay for ad free UA-cam service its costs you nothing. And you still rather than appreciate and move on you bitch and moan lmao.
Let's see you step into his shoes for a day 😂😂😂😂😂
William Uskoski ok, no problem.. no one is forcing him to do UA-cam.. without his views, likes, and subscribers he wouldn’t be anywhere just like any other UA-camr.. guess he shouldn’t have a comment section seeing how people that watch basically pay him can’t have an opinion.. People get so butt hurt when people have an opinion.. I like Greg, he’s great, very knowledgeable, explains things for people who wanna learn, and he can do whatever he wants with his money, I don’t care, all I’m saying is, finish one project.. not asking a lot..
@@yepimthatguy7934 well sometimes you gotta wait for stuff
I have drove for many years great tractor
U should use the head lights on and but that transmission in your truck in mind opinion
If you hold your tung right you have 4 reverse
Greg !!!! finish the other projects before you get a new one lmao….
You said yourself the other day all the trucks need stuff done, only the 3500 drives as of right now, take care of those please ! I want to see the new 1st gen, the OG 1st gen, the '08, the '05, and the second gen done before you get anything new XD
Also where's the promod ? lol
Probably needs liners
More than likely dropped liners of that is indeed a new head pushing out of the overflow like that.
Sounds like fun ,entertaining and educational
With your Pete and the hauling you’re gonna do with it are you gonna have to run logs? I believe your truck would have to be e-logs
Yes!!!! I see four wheel drive parts
I love the American class interior our 98 has it in it
i like the truck hows the airhorns work
Greg who do i contact about buying the green truck if its still up for grabs?
Can you please finish at least 1 build?
Greg, your passenger is wrong about how many reverses the truck has.it appears to have an 18 speed and not only has the two in low&high range, but with the 18 speed you can split those two reverses for the other two!nanner, nanner.
Looks like 18speed to me not 13 speed usually 18speed has gray splitter and 13 is red....but for what your going to use it for I wouldn't touch it just because cat is expensive to work on and it definitely needs engine work steaming out of overflow tube means head gasket cracked head or block maybe even liner pushing pressure into cooling system
I'm wondering how many big rigs were not work trucksm?
You know why cat paints their motors yellow ?
Because they think it’s worth it’s weight in gold.
That motor brings great money even in parts.
Your options are a cheap head test kit from Napa. Test it and see if it has exhaust in the coolant. Or put it on the dyno and run it to see what it does.
From that blow by and someone putting a head on it, I’ll bet money it’s a sleeve. They thought they could cheap fix it with a head.
Either way , I bet you that’s a full inframe , cut the block, new head possibly , and maybe a turbo water pump and compressor while your at it.
Your looking at a 20-30k repair bill for that engine to work again.
Even more if you decided to do an out of frame rebuild.
Good luck with this one.
Start in 3rd or fourth gear bobtailing
Peep that grey spliter 😃
said it was a 13spd but that little grey splitter says different
Earlier 3rd gens have a 10.5 inch rear end and takes less fluid than the newer 11.5 rear end
