I’ve been practicing this technique for well over 30 + years, even to this day, now that I’ve retired from the Military. It has helped tremendously in those times of war, but as I transferred back into civilian life. There are many stresses in life that are not associated with the high stresses, and demands of military life. But there are associations of stress that build up, even in civilian settings. This is a very good technique 😇🙏👍

You are the first veteran I've heard use this technique. All the others say they never heard tale of it in their entire lives, and the only "fall asleep fast anywhere" technique the military uses is keeping their entire workforce in a constant state of sleep deprivation. Seems like a terrible way to do things but I think the only people who think the military would certainly not do anything ever in a terrible way are lifelong civilians. I feel like the special ops community though must have some good sleeping techniques, since they don't live the same day-to-day lifestyle and yet manage to sleep on their flights to their assignments.

As a gunner in a tank, I learned this method in the army. It is called *Progressive muscle relaxation according to Edmund Jacobson (PMR)*
Every minute that a soldier has nothing to do he should rest, you never know when you will get to sleep next. And the body also gets used to these power naps and is as well rested as possible. My wife always wonders how I can fall asleep so quickly, but anyone who has slept in the turret of a moving tank with the steel helmet banging to all sides will no longer have trouble falling asleep in regular circumstances. This exercise also helps later with PTSD, which unfortunately affects many soldiers. Depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, etc.
    Just give it a try.

If I had to guess, it takes me like 5-10 minutes to fall asleep, and some nights I just won't be able to do it because I can't control distractions, but this is still MUCH better than what I had before, where it took me an hour to sleep and constantly wake up through the night,

It works even better if you flex and hold the muscles for a few seconds and *then* relax them - if you’re already tense from stress it’s not so easy to just relax your body because you can’t feel the tension unless you use each muscle group. Also, this exercise in itself empties the mind and I’d usually be asleep before finishing. You adapt, and pretty soon you’re taking power-naps in trees and on rock, anywhere your body was stationary for more than two minutes - especially if you had a Bergen on to lean against, or back to back with a buddy.

    I'm listening.
Sometimes, when lying on bed, I tense my entire body up, holding for 20 seconds, and then release, and breathe in slow, exhale slow, sometimes this helps.
Sometimes I visualize a candle, with a flame, and any thoughts that arise flickers the flame, so I focus on the flame being still.
And Sometimes, I'm able to entirely control my mind, from any intrusive thoughts, and fall asleep shortly after, but this doesn't work all the time - certain movies, states, life, hardships, internet, life, and life again, makes it difficult.

Walked him through a meditation similar to this technique and he was out in minutes. Did it two nights in a row and slept through both nights. He was doing it on his own in two weeks, with only the occasional sleep issue from there.

    1) Listen to sleep guided meditation/sleep stories/easy audiobooks
    2) Focus on breathing slowly: controlling my breath actually helped me control my thoughts
    3) If you have a tendency to think of scenarios, use that to your advantage: create some relaxing mental scenes and replay them
    4) Cut down sugar and don't consume chocolate/caffeine after 5pm
    5) If you have a sedentary lifestyle, tire your body out a bit through exercise
    6) Drink chamomile or other calming herbal fusions (not right before bed though as they can be diuretic)
    7) A warm shower before sleep and cool room temperature helps.

A huge part to the breathing thing, is you went to breathe in for 3 seconds and out for 6/7. Constantly blowing out for that time.
You want it to be just hard enough that you need to focus on your breathe control. But not so hard you’re straining after 10 reps.
It’ll get easier after the first few. You can always change the times.
For others having a hard time ~ this is super corny / cliche / embarrassing. But actively telling yourself “it’s okay to sleep, everything will be fine.” Can help. Run through what’s stressing you, like if you have kids “I’ll hear them, even if I’m asleep. It’s okay.”

I herniated my L5 riding my snowboard. I knew something was wrong when I fell but it didn’t hurt at first (maybe adrenaline). But the pain got extremely bad in the next 4-5 days. Easily the worst pain I’ve ever felt. I had a micro discectomy done to repair it.

The best technique Ive ever heard and which mimics the bodys natural falling sleep action that releases the chemical reaction which transfers you from awake to asleep, is this:
Very slowly, over 5-6 seconds close your eyes almost entirely, then again very slowly over 5-6 seconds open your eyes a tiny slit, then repeat. Its a subtle amount of slow movement. Typically you cant make it beyond 10 repetitions as it releases a heap of the chemical melatonin and you fall asleep without fail.

Edit: I am ten minutes in, still couldn't stop smirking all over my face lol, I really wanna know if there are psychological studies on such behaviour...It's the kind of smile I have when I see the moon and think of the crazy dimensions of its distance to earth, or when I see a raindrop on grass wonderfully reflect the light from the dawning sun etc.

I'm going to try this. It's hard to keep from thinking of stuff you have to do or sad past memories of people. Sometimes I think about my childhood home. I start inside the front door and explore each room, cabinet, closet, basement. Colors of the linoleum, wall telephone, knotty pine rec-room in the basement. That usually relaxes me and I'm out.

The military technique to falling asleep in 2 minutes is to wake up at 4am, and stand there all day long doing nothing until dark, get back to your bed at 10pm, and then smash 6 shots of Sailor Jerry’s in 10 minutes because you have to be up at 4am again. Works every time.

I have been doing this for a long time, not to go to sleep but ready my mind and body. Before every gig or anything a relaxed state will help. I have always started at my feet and worked my way up to my head. It is self-hypnosis and a state of mind that controls your body as well as your mind. The more you use it the better you become at getting into that state of mind.
