    Thanks. I scarified last November and it was pretty brutal, leaving behind a number of bald patches. It looked like some kind of rodeo ground and was really mucky! And although I put seed down ("cold start" from garden lawncare guy), followed by a little topsoil, nothing has happened so far (6 weeks). Mind you, I don't think I put down enough top dressing, and I definitely didn't stomp it down. So the info in this video will definitely be useful to me!

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому +4

      Hi even though its titled cold start, all it takes is one deep frost to kill off any seeds that have just germinated sadly.. best to use cold start seeds early spring once the risk of frost is pretty much gone.. or you think you'll have a good 2 to.3 week window of lowish temps but no risk of a deep frost

    Oh man, wish I had this when I first started to restore my lawn after my husband passed away. Short of sleeping on the lawn to stroke it to show some love, I have tried many DYI recommendations! Have had some success but have the same patches to restore every year. I have used peat moss on top to avoid birds coming in for a buffet and to keep moisture up, but the same patches showing up every spring. I avoided stepping on the areas where I overseeded but I am going out with my snowshoes later today. Hope my neighbours won’t call the heath services. 😂

    • @LawnRight

      Hmmm... I wonder if theres an issue under the ground
      . Possibly some old bricks or rocks or simply shallow soil.. either of those could cause issues.. I went to one last week.. shallow soil full of pebbles and the pebbles had been heating up in the sun and causing moisture loss.. also the amount of pebbles were causing the roots to struggle pushing down and developing. Keep up the good work.. and no, you're not crazy 😁😥

    • @ginetteregimbal4882

      Point well made! When we first built here, the landscape was 98% sand! We added soil over the slope and have added more soil over the years. However, you make a good point! I will bring in another substantial load of soil late summer and seed heavily to leave it root before winter.

    Great video! Been doing my garden lately, I have a 40 metre long garden and trying to improve my lawn, looking a lot better but we have cats and so many foxes in our area its a pain trying to lay top soil of any kind as they dig it up! my last attempt of refilling a hole (dead bush I ripped out) is going well as i put a net over the top and luckily a week later its not been touched, no signs of grass yet but will take another few weeks i guess. Love watching these type of videos!

    Very good thorough job n vlogg here as most of us will have thin patchy areas on existing lawns from winter…..so it’s good to see a routine to correct this. Just scarified my front lawn as never done before in the 6ys been at the house…loads of moss n thatch with 2 passes.
    Put some more iron sulphate down to kill off remaining moss as lawns full of it….so will scarify it again soon…once gone black again.
    Liked n subbed already!!

    Howdy mate... I'm from the states. I love the tool you're using about 1/3 way though the video. I tried the garden weasel made by Corona. The wingnuts keep loosening off and the stars fall off. I had to return it to Lowe's. I landscape and mow lawns. I need a tool that'll handle constant use. These small engine shops don't carry them. Lowe's, Home Depot, and TRS have all switched to Corona. The original garden weasel was a beast, but you can't find it anymore.

      You can still do it but will have to keep up a much more frequent watering schedule while its germinating and frequently through summer till the roots have established

    Excellent video, really helpful. Just wondering when is the best time to do this and should I try and keep the kids off it for a certain period of time afterwards?

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому +1

      Hi spring or autumn are typically the best 2 times and yes ideally keeping off for at least 3 weeks is necessary then very minimal use for the month after where possible... autumn is often a bit cooler and kids sometimes stay inside more then

    Hi,
    We have a trampoline in the garden and when it rains it seems to kill off the grass. We try to move it around the garden and when we do the grass starts to regrow but leaves a big patch of mud. Do you have any suggestions for combatting this?
    We now apply your video to the rest of my lawn. Thanks

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому +1

      Hi yeah its very difficult with trampolines.. grass needs at least 3 hours of direct sunlight a day so you likely need to move it 3 to 4 times a day to stand any chance or dedicate on part of the garden to it

    When seeding after a cut is it also beneficial to put down lawn feed pellets like an after cut 4 in 1 product ?

      Hi.. no.. as thatll contain iron and weedkiller which are both detrimental to new seeds.. if anything a preseed or balanced fertiliser

    What an excellent job in detailing each step! I usually just found videos on repairing bare spots but not on thinning lawn--I have both. Was going to just cultivate the bare spots but after watching, will rake the thinning lawn (it's a very small area), put seed down there as well, with a light coat of compost on the whole lawn and use the back of the rake to smooth out. First time doing this; think I will need to incorporate a bit of compost into the bare spots before putting in seed, as the soil is a bit sandy on those areas. And, goes without saying, water 2-3 times a day to keep moist. One question: will any of this effort be forfeited if it should rain 2 or 3 days after this is completed? Thanks so much!

    Just ordered a bottle of TurfSolv. Really hoping it helps with the worm casts and leather jacket issues on my front lawn. Is it ok to use in the winter clearly before the 1st frosts arrive.

    • @paulstaniford8622

      My new lawn at the back in now 8 weeks old and starting to get covered in worm casts. Had a major issue with leather jacks but after some black plastic and some early mornings I managed to remove over 100 grubs. Now the worms have started so keen to try and stop them. Being it’s only 8 weeks old I’m being very selective on what’s put on the new lawn as was seeded from scratch using the All American 🇺🇸 Green seed from Hurrells. Keen to see if I can stop the worms or suppress them with something.

    Another very informative video. If you keep the grass growing and keep it thick will the weeds and crab grass decrease?
    What is a good grass food and when is the best time to apply it

      Hi.. thanks.. so, yes to.the weeds.crab grass no unfortunately. Youd need to eradicate it ,then thicken it up and hope.. but even so youll still get more at some point. If you're basee in the USA you can buy preemergents to help. So grass food can be applied at any point while its growing.. summer fertiliser,autumn fertiliser etc

    I can’t thank you enough for your videos. I have learnt so much from them and am trying to follow as much of your advice as possible. Can I ask, is it possible to reseed a patchy lawn even coming into Summer? We have a sloped garden and one side of the lawn is moist and the other is very dry due to trees sucking a lot of the ground moisture. We’ve reseeded the damper side but will we have to wait till Autumn to reseed the harder dry side? Thank you

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Sharon yes it is. It's a great take actually as it'll germinate much faster.... that said.. it can also die back much faster once its come through... so water up to 5x a day..keep it moist till it's all come through.. possibly 2 to 3 weeks but depending on temps could be sooner..THEN once its through keep up watering daily for a month then water 3 times a week deeply for the rest of summer.. mornings best.. because while it looks nice on top the roots will be shallow so any stress will knock it back

      @@LawnRight Thank you Shaun. Just one more Q, I have a budget scarifier from Lidl with 2 'rakes' (one that looks like lots of hooks and the other more like a plough). Which would be best to get the dry side scarified? Thank you

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  2 роки тому

      @@sharonmc5192 I'd start off with the hooks and see how it goes. It's less aggressive. You can always dampen the lawn a bit an hour or 2 beforehand as this would help if it's too hard
