Thank you Shaun this is great for a beginner. Just (well two years ago) moved into a new build house with new turf so want to keep it looking nice. Never had a nice lawn before!
@@LawnRight New sub here! :D Hey Shaun! Absolutely love this guy, such a star! always gives us straight to the point useful information. And sometimes he even throws the odd big word in, Shaun loves his big words 🤣
Hi mate, loved the video well presented and edited. As a fellow tradesmen the information you give in over seeding is spot on. Like you said when you walk away it's down to the customer to maintain the watering for the seed to germinate and then once fully germinate regularly feeding through the growing period at least once/ twice a month then the main key to thicken up the lawn is regularly cutting minimum of once a week ideally but only taking off small amounts each time that will allow the grass blade still to photosynthesis and stimulating branching. If the lawn is left to grow to long then cut short straight away then your putting the grass into an energy negative (recovery mode). People who want a nice lawn and think by over seeding or laying new turf that's what they will get remember that's just part one of the step, its the regularly maintenance afterwards then you will start seeing the results. The more you can put into it the more you will get out of it as they say, wise words. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Keep up the good work👍
Great channel with useful information. One thing to mention though when spreading Gypsum as often as you do you should wear a mask. Gypsum is carcinogenic when it's inhaled. So much so that farmers have to carry out risk assessments for wind etc when. Spreading. It's also generally recommended to wet it down after to push it into the ground and keep it out of the air as much as possible (obviously your wetting at the end anyway just thought it worth a mention)

I'm just wondering how long I have to leave it when done. I've got two crazy, active dogs that would have no respect for the top dressing. 😀
Eeek .. Honestly it'll take between 3 days and 2 weeks till most new grasses are poking through assuming multiple daily waterings but they'll be so fragile at this stage and really you'll need to try and avoid it as much as possible for a good month other than mowing.. And all during this time continuing with multiple daily waterings.. Then after that ideally minimising use as it'll take another few weeks more to start establishing properly. I appreciate this isn't what you want to hear but it's what's best for the lawn.. Unless you can wait till autumn you might want to get some temporary fencing
I'm thinking that fencing might be my only option. I've already aerated it. The watering will be no problem, I'm on the west coast of Ireland, so plenty of rain. Thanks for the reply.
Hey, found your channel today and have been enjoying your content and learned a fair bit too already. I've got a. area of "lawn" (yeah right, I wish) which is in the shade for most of the day, getting only a few hours of direct sun in the evenings in the summertime. Maybe 5 hours at most. Consequently, I've never had any success getting lawn there. It is now a small but desolate wasteland of failure..😢 I had the bright idea this year (after battling it for about 15 years or so) to widen the pathway next to it and widen out the flower bed opposite and bring them almost together, thus no longer having to look at that barren monstrosity. I've got plants which seem to grow ok in that shady flowerbed so I could spread them out, split up some big Iris plants etc to take up the space. So my question, have I simply just not been trying the right things and in reality if it is done right, there would be no reason to not be able to grow nice grass there? Or is my plan to re landscape the better option in this situation? Thanks in advance
Hi some grasses are designed for shady areas.. You can go online and search for shaded grass seed.. May have tall fescue in etc.. But even so grass needs a minimum of 3 hours a day of direct sunlight to be at full health so usually shady areas will still thin to varying degrees.. By all means give some a go and see if you can improve lighting
Hi so can you advise me please so I have mowed scarified and aerated know want to know next steps you would recommend and what product seed chemicals fertiliser and at what stages to use at ps I have a few lows that need sorting as well great channel love your energy
Hi you could just scatter seeds now and cover with a thin layer of topsoil or compost and water well. For the dips you can level them now in one go or build them up gradually. Any fertiliser ie spring summer will help green it up. Avoid weedkiller for a couple of months after seeding
Is there any reason I cannot use a regular forged steel garden rake if I use a knight touch? It seems to work pretty well, imo. Thanks 🙏🏻. Like your channel.
When applying compost is it always multi purpose or are the results better if you use a better quality dressing. It really confuses me. There are so many options it seems. Would a sandy loam work?
Hi yes sandy loam is fine the iak is to cover the seeds with a thin layer to stop birds, wind and heavy rain. I used regular topsoil and multipurpose compost both with excellent results
Hiya, we are trying to improve our lawn in a new build property, so the lawn was planted just about one year ago now. There’s definitely a lot of thatch (and dead grass possibly?) but I’ve read you shouldn’t scarify within 1-3 years for new lawns. Should we wait until next year?
Hi in my opinion you can definitely scarify once it's wlel established.. I'd give it a good 6 to 12 months from laying to assess if it need it and it sound like it does
How much would this same process cost me for 400m2 lawn for the exact same process you did in this video? Thanks again and great videos. Props to you sir.
Hi it's the JNJ modlebut sadly out of stock at the minute. It's just a solo guy whose made them, called Jon Gali. Search u JNJ Store on Facebook for updates on when it'll be back in
Great video. I wonder what you think about the pregerminating of grass seeds in a bucket, that I've seen a few videos for, to save having to water the whole lawn. Although it does mean it can be a bit more difficult to sow the seeds if they're not dried out first...
nice work shaun and lots of good info. where do you get your compost? Ive been trying to revive my lawn for a few weeks now, and done aeration, and brushed in compost and some grass seed but im just using the compost bags you see outside supermarkets and bargain shops and its always soaking wet and really clumpy. it breaks down when brushing it in but the stuff youre using looks miles easier to work with. im assuming all compost is pretty much good for your lawn but which is the easiest to work with?
Great one again Shaun. I’ve got a very uneven lawn due to it being on a slope. I’ve done all the steps a number of weeks ago and had some decent germination on a good portion. However some areas haven’t germinated at all or have only just started, so I’ve got some longer grass now and some still seed/just started to shoot. Should I cut it now and just cut my losses on the bare patches and reseed?
Hi any tools in particular? I usually link to most tools in the video description of my renovations. Have a lookin there at one or 2 recent videos then feel free to comment again if still unsure
Do you recommend topdressing with compost yearly the whole lawn or treating wintered areas in spring and topdressing Biannually ? I did a full overseed last season and its looking great. Thanks Shaun for all your guidance, Lawns become addictive
hi you can topdress with compost through the growing season to add more "life" to the soil.. Currently I probably do it once or twice a year but it can def be increased
Lovely video, Sean but here's the 60,000 dollar question. If you dpn:t have all the kit, etc like you or are not prepared to do all the faffing what would you charge? £12-1500?
It's half a days work with the tools and maybe a full day possibly a bit more with basic tools? Although e want to earn well there's a fine line what people aren't willing to pay.. Where that is I don't know
Hi im a beginner, and I have a question. How long after top dressing the lawn can I cut the grass? and how long after top dressing can I apply more fertiliser. Thank you in advance
Hi you want to wait as long as possible to cut the grass.. Once it starts to come through give it 3 weeks if you can.. If you applied fert when seeding give it a good 6 weeks before any more is applied. I'd still wait a good 4 or 5 weeks otherwise
@@LawnRight Ok thank you. I live in Norway and the winter is very cold and long so it's hard to get a good lawn. I just tried top dressing for the first time last week following your instructionsI. Only thing is I didn't apply any fertiliser , only seeds. like your videos, it s easy to understand you and its quality content!!
Top video pal cheers! Are there still customers that don’t give you a nice tea or coffee? Can’t get my head around this if I have any tradesmen they get asked if they want a drink and some biscuits!! Just the way I’ve been bought up I guess 😅
@@LawnRight yes not everyone is the same I know and some establishments you probably wouldn’t want a drink anyway 😂👍🏻. Just a quick question if possible, I had my lawn layed last September and now it has lots and lots of lighter patches all across I thinks it’s rye grass? Any tips to sort this out? Or a video?
One thing i keep wondering is after you put the seed down and then compost, do you not move the seed around when you rake and brush the compost? Could you end up brushing the seed into one area without realising?
Hi it's not too bad really when there is existing grass it doesn't really move but on bare spots I don't bruhd it I simply roller or leave it with the compost layer on
My 2 cents. Grass seed is good the year you buy it and then through the next spring. That's it! If you have any remaining give it away or willy-nilly throw it on any lawn because it will soon be just something to put in the trash.
Hiya Shaun . Hope your enjoying the nicer weather to work in. Can you post a link to the manual tine core aerator for us please . Great content and info . Brilliant pal . ❤
Hi Neil.. it's the JNJ model, but at the minute it's fully sold out on Amazon. (keep up with the owners here on Facebook facebook.com/search/top?q=jnj%20store). It is definitely right up there as a top one. I did test some others before this one (video is here ua-cam.com/video/evJW7lw_9Qk/v-deo.html. or you can just go to the description for more details in that video)
That looks a great quality compost. Which one is it? I've been using miracle grow. But even that has lots of small stones and long fibrous bits in it. Not that great tbh.
Hi Shaun! Roughly how much gypsium do you use when applying it to the lawn? The packaging says to use 500g per square meter. So, if I’d use it like this for my 50m2 lawn, I’d use the entire 25kg package. Does that sound accurate? 🤔
Hi it is best to follow their guidelines. I've personally just done a light dose and tell the customer to repeat every month however if my one lawn were clay I'd be doing the same as you and yes that sounds right
@@LawnRight Thank You Shaun! I just noticed that I bought powdered gypsum but I’ll use my drop spreader to apply this evenly on my lawn after aeration. I hope it’ll work out 😅
Just scarified today, going to over seed and top dress tomorrow, I’m a little concerned as the current lawn is quite thick in area and worried the new seed won’t germinate, should I scarify more over the thicker areas? Or would it be an issue?
Hi yes I would go over the thick areas again in a different direction so the soil is exposed if seeing and dressing. If you were only scarifying you would probably be ok as is
Don't know what lawns been like mines never been as water logged as this year normally this time of year starting to dry out but boom heavy rain back to water logged just waiting for a dry spell before I start first part of my renovations
@@LawnRight thanks. What’s the best for a front lawn (for stripes) and a rear lawn for all round use, in your opinion? Should I go for 100% rye, or is fescue ok?
Hi Id be more inclined to just dig some deeper holes and add some organic matter with some gypsum sprinkled in.. making sue the deeper holes actually go well into the clay layer.. if you can go a good 1 to 2 feet pop a few pebbles in the bottom quarter then a mix of mainly soil with some compost and a sprinkle of gypsum
Hi they all clog up at times. I personally don't worry, as if a bit of sticky clay soil is in the hollow tine, it does eventually get pushed out by the next piece of soil or the one after that. You can periodically clean it and spray some wd40 in the tines to help but ive never done it.. in this video it was the JNJ one but he has sadly sold out at the minute.. The walensee (non hollow tine) is a decent budget one, as is the landline premium one

@@andydarwin9785 Im sorry I don't really know truly.. Ive not cleaved much into names and brands.. I do g on engines.. Honda, or briggs and Stratton I trust.. Im not a fan of anything with a loncin engine in (underpowered).. you'll find many brands use a lot of these engines and thats important
@andydarwin9785, I highly recommend the Toro Recycler 22" Personal Pace Self-Propelled with Electric Start. I have been using mine for the past 5-6 years without any issues, basically a maintenance free machine. However, it depends on whether you're using it for residential or commercial use, and if you prefer an electric or gas-powered. Good idea to also factor in the maintenance requirements.
Most clay soils are not sodic, so gypsum will not improve their structure or drainage. Gypsum is also not effective at changing soil pH When gypsum is appropriate, it is usually broadcast on the soil surface at rates of 2.5-10 t/ha, with higher rates used for heavy clay soils. Incorporation into the top 10 cm is recommended. Application should be done well in advance of the growing season to allow the gypsum time to dissolve and take effect In summary, gypsum can be a useful amendment for sodic clay soils, but it is not a universal solution for all clay soils. Testing the soil to determine its properties is advisable before applying gypsum
Hi.. I'm a little lazy.. The Camon has been in storage at the far end of the garden and the classes was much closer 😁.. However I have literally just used it on a job Friday which will be on the channel soon
And to think my new neighbour has recently ripped-out all the beautiful, mature flowering shrubs in his garden…with resultant mass-destruction / disturbance of birds’ nests and Hedgehogs etc. And tells me he’s “putting a lawn down” on the now empty space…(and I quote)…”Because a lawn’s LOW MAINTENANCE” !
I wouldn't of done it in that order personally. Think I would of cut short first, scarified, aerated, gypsum, seed, top dressed and finally fleeced it. But that's not to say your way is wrong. Just a bit different to mine that's all. The end result will be the same I guess. It's just how we get there differs
No disrespect of course because your videos are ace, but that compost spreader looks a load of rubbish…you are better using the back of the rake and,it’s not cumbersome like the silly compost spreader…..

Ooh. Hard one.. I think maybe hang fire another week to see if any more comes through.. Been bloomin cold lately slowing it down
would like to see the lawn when its done ,grand job :D
Thanks.. I promise to film an update when I next go there (next few weeks)
Great video Shaun, would the grass grow back back if you didn’t seed it? Thanks…
Absolutely yes for most grasses.. Reason I often overseedisforbare spots and to make sure it'sa good even seed type across the whole lawn
Would you recommend doing this whole process once or twice a year?
Hi once is enough for most lawns
Could you do a video please showing what tools you’d recommend. Theres so many out there it’s hard to filter out the rubbish.
Hi any tools in particular? I usually link to most tools in the video description of my renovations. Have a lookin there at one or 2 recent videos then feel free to comment again if still unsure
I didn’t see that so thank you.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
informative vid fella..much appreciated😊
No problem 👍
Where that is I don't know
Thank you for your channel. Do we need to put garden fleece on top when overseeding?
Hi thanks.. It's not essential but adds another layer of protection. I don't always do it but it does help so entirely up to you. ☺️👍
Cheers mate.. yes there still are, sadly, we always carry some drinks with us though
Hi it's not too bad really when there is existing grass it doesn't really move but on bare spots I don't bruhd it I simply roller or leave it with the compost layer on
Love your channel, always great advice and amazing content !!!!!!
Glad you enjoy it!
going to enjoy this 🙂... have a great week mate.
Thanks, you too!
Great video.. I have a lot of seed left over from last year, can it be used?
Hi yes but it's very likely around 10% may fail.. It alos needs to be pretty dry.. My seeds kept tin original bags rolled up
Many Thanks Shaun . Superb that pal. ❤
Enough great video, I being following all your video this season to renovate my lawn Shaun and its starting to look good. Thanks Pal.
@@Tisbigs any time 👍
Great job. Can you show the lawn now ?, 3 weeks later.
Hi I will call there soon
That looks a great quality compost. Which one is it? I've been using miracle grow. But even that has lots of small stones and long fibrous bits in it. Not that great tbh.
Hi it's a high end one. Full details available at lawnright.co.uk/compost.. Thanks
@@LawnRight Thanks Shaun
I hope it’ll work out 😅
I have about the same size garden as the one in the video. I was wondering how much would it cost roughly to have that done?
Hi it was close to a full day so a full day's labour plus seed and maybe 10 or so bags of compost. (low to mid 3 figures)
@@LawnRight thank you.
Just a quick question, after you aerate should you put some sand / soil mix down the holes or is it okay to just leave it like you have done?
I usually leave it. But there are exceptions.. If heavy clay you could do that or compost to slowly improve the soil
If you were only scarifying you would probably be ok as is
@@LawnRight thanks mate
Would sharp sand help in the plugged holes for drainage?
From time to time but mostly I leave them to close naturally
Don't know what lawns been like mines never been as water logged as this year normally this time of year starting to dry out but boom heavy rain back to water logged just waiting for a dry spell before I start first part of my renovations
It's been horrendous hasn't it
@LawnRight frustrating for home gardening never mind a business
Great video, Shaun! Your roller looks like it's been through the wars. 😄 I'm looking forward to the follow-up video of this lawn later.
Ha ha. You're like the 4th person to mention it.. Think it's time to let it out to roam in the pastures 😁😁
Thanks for the video. Which Hurrell’s seed are you using please? Thank you : )
This was cold start
@@LawnRight thanks. What’s the best for a front lawn (for stripes) and a rear lawn for all round use, in your opinion? Should I go for 100% rye, or is fescue ok?
@@paul.harvey rye is usually darker
Another good one, Shaun!
Thanks!
What all round seed to use in north east england ? For multi dofferent gardens ?
Hi this will help ua-cam.com/video/W21b_42ajkI/v-deo.htmlsi=8rVZI4j4J9zfdNOT 😊 explains everything
Would gypsum have any effect if it was put on sandy free draining soil that has a clay base 6 inches under it?
Hi Id be more inclined to just dig some deeper holes and add some organic matter with some gypsum sprinkled in.. making sue the deeper holes actually go well into the clay layer.. if you can go a good 1 to 2 feet pop a few pebbles in the bottom quarter then a mix of mainly soil with some compost and a sprinkle of gypsum
What’s the difference between gypsum and lime for your lawn?
Limes mainly for adjusting pH levels up
Hi great video, but what is the stuff you used in the end with the spray bottle?
Hi it's emerald green lawnright.co.uk/shop thanks
I’ve seed my lawn yesterday and top dress will it be to late to add the emerald green?
@@tashmialhenry662 not at all. The seeds won't have germinated yet so all good.. Just treat very carefully lifting feet
Ok thank you very much. Top man
I’ve just bought a bottle, do you also sell the compost and seed you use?
What hollow tone aerator do you use? The ones I buy just clog up
Hi they all clog up at times.
Can I buy any of your products anywhere please
Hi lawnright.co.uk/shop many thanks
Can you use grass cuttings to cover the seeds
Excellent comment. I bet you could as long as its very fine and isn't a thick layer
clever editing halfway 🤣 top job👍
My twin brother? 🤣🤣
0:44 with a name like 'mind your own business' I thought you were telling us off for wondering what you were talking to the owner about. Until I actually googled it 🤣
Ha ha lol.. I know I have to be careful how I tell customers!

Thank you so much!
What areas of the UK do you work in mate
Hi mainly south Yorkshire north Notts and a bit of lincoln

Compost or top soil? I get confused
Hi you can use any for covering seeds and both work just fine.. I prefer compost as it adds in much needed nutrients but its not essential
@@LawnRight thank you. Your channel is best honestly you make things look so easy
What make lawn mower is that any good for cutting wet grass thanks
Hi it's a stihl 248..not the best in wet grass just my opinion.. But good enough for my needs.. I don't mow too much
@@LawnRight what in your opinion is a good lawnmower for what grass reasonably priced thanks
@@LawnRight thanks you keep up the good work
@andydarwin9785, I highly recommend the Toro Recycler 22" Personal Pace Self-Propelled with Electric Start.
Gypsum is also not effective at changing soil pH
When gypsum is appropriate, it is usually broadcast on the soil surface at rates of 2.5-10 t/ha, with higher rates used for heavy clay soils. Incorporation into the top 10 cm is recommended. Application should be done well in advance of the growing season to allow the gypsum time to dissolve and take effect
In summary, gypsum can be a useful amendment for sodic clay soils, but it is not a universal solution for all clay soils. Testing the soil to determine its properties is advisable before applying gypsum
What grass seed do you use?
Hi it changes but currently using hurrells cold start
@@LawnRight thank you.
@@LawnRight is there any other you would recommend and do you buy off the shelf grass seed or is it not great.
@@simonbrenton9142 sorry I've never really used off the shelf stuff much.. Hurrells is pretty good, Boston seeds are also a good brand
You don’t use the camon aerator much
How come?
The classen is a great machine though
Just wondering

😔
I wouldn't of done it in that order personally. Think I would of cut short first, scarified, aerated, gypsum, seed, top dressed and finally fleeced it. But that's not to say your way is wrong. Just a bit different to mine that's all. The end result will be the same I guess. It's just how we get there differs
Your way was exactly how I did it at the weekend, apart from the gypsum 👍
he should make a flowerbed in the middle of the lawn.
Im thinking of going the fake grass route as my grass is just dandelions and moss 🙈
😮

Where’s the Sthil scarifier?
It's back in action now.. I had to change blades.. Did that then the handle dropped and snapped the height adjuster so had to buy that and fix it lol
I need flocculation. I will buy some gypsum.
😁
Apply every month or other month as a thin amount and within 18 months it will be so much better
Yeah, simple... but expensive. Especially when you have over 10,000 sq. ft. But, nice yard.
Yeah it's definitely more expensive the bigger the lawn
Here we go again 😅
Oooh yeah
Get a thicker lawn is easy just move to Ireland 😂.

Gypsum destroy the soil not good it hardens ot
No disrespect of course because your videos are ace, but that compost spreader looks a load of rubbish…you are better using the back of the rake and,it’s not cumbersome like the silly compost spreader…..
11 simple steps, lol. why not 50 simple steps?
I couldn't think of 50 things 😜😜
