Nice to see another Victa Swordsman 14”! We have the same mower and has been in the family for over 30 years (firstly was my father’s and has since been passed down to me), and it’s still going strong. The handle bar fractured with a fatigue crack last year but a friend welded it back together. I have the original instruction manual for the Victa Swordsman - more than happy to send you a copy if needed. I also created my cutting height gauge inside the body of the mower which helps set the height.

A tip from me on adjusting a cylinder mower. tip it on its back or side. then hold a straight edge, like a short bit of wood, along the front roller and rear roller. Then you can measure the distance from this to the bottom blade. This will be your height of cut.
When you mow the lawn you remove some leaf reducing the plants ability to photosynthesise. The plant defends itself by creating new leaves, which thickens the lawn.

Hello Shaun. I've recently scarified my lawn and reseeded after following your videos. Is there a moss killer I can apply on the new grass as some products suggest it should only be used on established lawns.
Hi Shaun. I took on a task to sort out the lawn in front of our church and looking for some advice. It was so full of moss and weeds it was like a trampoline 😂. I put moss killer down which left about half the lawn bare. I decided not to put weedkiller down because I wouldn't be able to put seed down for 8 weeks. 3 weeks ago I overseeded and have varying heights of growth up to 10 cm. When can I put some weedkiller down? Great videos BTW. Thanks in advance.
Hi Peter I'd give it a good 3 to 4 weeks yet before applying weedkiller.. chances are maybe wait till September as the grass there wont be getting regularly watered and will likely already be enduring heat stress.. but if in 3 to 4weeksits looking happy and vibrant you should be fine.. thanks 😊
Thanks Shaun. I couldn't have picked a worse time to overseed, the heatwave and no rain for 20 days! I watered it twice a day, so I hope it will be OK in 4 weeks 🤞
Here in the US, there's a product by Jonathan green called summer insect control that won't burn the lawn to help for insects and a organic one for grubs and insects
Lawnright, I've been watching your channel for a long time. Any problems with quakgrass in the UK? Here in the US I'm getting more of it and I'm not too sure what to do about it.
Hi you can apply fertiliser regularly to improve the regular grass health to try and choke it out.. or dig it out or use a post emergent herbicide to kill it such as "certainty" that will kill it and not the lawn.. ice not tried that a sits not available in the uk. You could go for roundup and apply only to the quackgrass then wait 2 to 3 weeks.. take out all the dead matter with a rake then reseed and cover with a thin layer of compost
Martin P.: I had a horrible problem with quackgrass (AKA couch or twitch grass) in 2002 at my Virginia rental property. The Certainty herbicide worked well without affecting the other grasses. Unfortunately, the manufacturer changed something in the product, and it is no longer used for selective control of quackgrass. The tenants didn't take care of the lawn properly and I noticed during a trip back to Virginia in 2017 that the quackgrass had returned. The Certainty herbicide no longer worked, and the only solution was to use Roundup (Glyphosate) on the entire 1.25 acre lawn and start over. Since I had gone back to sell the house, and the yard was mostly green anyway, I decided to let the new owners have their bit of fun in their own time. Because I didn't learn my lesson properly, in 2019 I let a small patch of quackgrass in my German lawn get out of control. It wasn't until mid-2021 before I could find someone to tackle the job. By then, Glyphosate was banned for sale in Germany, so the only solution was to remove the soil. The landscaper removed about 60 square meters of earth to a depth of 30cm in order to be sure the root system was gone. This week, I noticed a smaller patch of quackgrass is back, but not in the same area from 2019. I'm pulling it out as best as I can while trying to extract as much of the rhizomes as possible. I hope the new grass will eventually choke out the small patch. If this doesn't work, then I'll find some Glyphosate elsewhere in the EU and spot treat the area later this year. The Glyphosate can still be purchased elsewhere.
Hi Shaun. I have an unconnected, but sort of connected, question - and apologies in advance for the length of it! I have followed your guidance and have renovated my front garden, and I'm very pleased with the results. I recently moved into our house so the outside needs a lot of work , a large part was the front. I now have the back to do, and I was going to do the same as I did in the front i.e., scarify, over seed, apply top dressing and voila. However, the problem with my back garden is that it is very 'bitty', what I mean is that there are many little borders here, there and everywhere, plus paths, old paving and patio areas and trees/shrubs, so I do not have a solid, large piece of lawn, rather an annoyingly fragmented lawn. I need to make a patio area and I was going to take up the grass in that location and relay it elsewhere in the garden to fill in the existing open borders, paths, patios etc., so that I go back to a blank canvas of one large, square (ish) lawn, so I can then renovate it all that way, then landscape as necessary. My back garden is around 250 square metres so not small, but not massive either. But having already started work on the back garden, I have come to the conclusion that it will be a huge job to do it the way I'd planned, part of the reason being that it will essentially be impossible, or certainly really hard work, to get all of the areas I need to fill in at the correct level so that when I take up and relay the grass from the (soon to be) new patio area, the areas to be filled in match the height of the lawn around it. This is made worse by the fact that the overall area of back garden undulates, so is not one uniform height. So I have come to the conclusion that I need to do one of two things - dig/turn over the whole of the back garden (after laying the patio and paving areas) and either 1) lay new turf, or 2) seed the whole area and let it grow that way, then reapplying seed another couple of times over a few months. I believe decent turf to cover 250 square metres will be around £1,000, plus I guess I may need topsoil to cover the whole area whichever method I choose, which will probably double the cost, or possibly more. What would you do? Regardless of whether I re-turf, or re-seed, do you think I could get away with just turning over the existing lawn (weeds and all) with a tiller, or do you think either method WILL need topsoil? Any other advice? Cheers.
Hi... any method would work but as you say, cost comes into it. You could definitely user a tiller/rotavator..I've done this. Rotavate the lot.. pick out all the old turf so it's all soil then use a landscapers fake multiple times to move the soil around to get it level... firm it all down then re take for levels.. repeat repeat till really happy with the levels.. then you can seed or turf however you see fit.. turf is instant. For seeds five it a quick rake to loosen the top cm or so.. scatter seeds.. firm it all in then a thin layer of multipurpose compost or topsoil..and water water water
@@LawnRight Thanks for your quick reply. I was out in the garden again this evening and I'm in no doubt now that I will have to go down one of those two routes, as the levels of the existing lawn are all over the place. I like the thought of 'instant' lawn, but having overseeded and topdressed the front, I know I can get good results that way too, saving quite a lot of money in the process. I've noted your comments, and I see you haven't mentioned about putting down a layer of topsoil, other than a thin layer and then reseed or returf. I see you've said simply rotavate it all, then pick out all the old bits of turf. Although it's going to be hard work, I'm assuming the best way would be to scalp the lawn first, as in remove the grass and, say, top 2cm of roots/earth, then rotavate what is left below (the mud), to save having to go through it all after rotavating to remove all the old turf and grass (and weeds too). My back garden is VERY spongey, just like the front was, and it is literally drowning in moss and thatch, not to mention all the borders and paving here and there, so would you agree it would simply be better to anihilate the entire garden, get down to bare mud, prepare as you've said and then either reseed, or returf? Nightmare job really, but it would probably be better in the long run to start from a neat, blank canvas, rather than absolute sheet!
Looks fantastic Shaun. How often are you applying the quarter rate nitrogen to the lawn? I fully reseeded my lawn a week later than you and I’ve just been applying multimite seaweed since then. I’ve noticed it’s yellowing slightly so last week applied a 7-2-2 feed, but not noticed much of change in colour yet. Would you add more?
I'm going to see how it goes but I imagine weekly or so. Thanks. That 7 2 2 is fairly balanced in terms of what nature delivers so you could add more or try a little light dose of nitrogen for a little extra push like I've done at a lower rate
why does everyone "walk" through their spray? I always hold my wand out to the side with nozzle aligned with the shaft and switch hands when i change directions. 🤔
Hi. How do you get rid of clover in a lawn? Have been following your videos. Have scarified, overseeded, top dressed, fed, mowed regularly. Lawn looks the best it has in years. Have got rid of all the moss but can’t get rid of the clover. Thanks
I am looking to buy your Emerald Green, Am I right in my calculations. My lawn is 200sq metres so I would need 1 Lt (2 bottles) and mix with a least 6 Lt water. I find with 10 litres of water i can walk up and down and across the lawn
Hi yeah.. 4ml of emerald green per square metre so you would need 800ml. Water wise we need 30ml water per square metre so 30 x 200 = 6000 ml or 6 litres at a minimum.. you can of course put more water in.. so 12 litres would ensure a double pass or more depending on which nozzle you use.. you could fill your sprayer with water and walk over the lawn to see how many litres it takes to cover the lawn
Great again Shaun. Looking good. I put fertilizer on yesterday. I have some seeweed in granular form miracle grow. Will that be ok to add it on or should I leave it and see how the fertilizer takes. Lawn is looking a bit brown due to the heatwave but rain is forecast next week so hoping for an improvement.
Shaun, I'm at the point in my lawn where I'm watering three times a week in the morning for 20 minutes and cutting twice a week (for now). I can tell I've been over the lawn, just removing the tops, but there are no clippings in the mower bag. My mowing schedule is Saturday and Wednesday morning, with seaweed extract on Sunday and Thursday morning. I can't find Emerald Green in Germany, so is there a suitable substitute? Also, can I mix the weed killer (Compo Lawn Week Killer Perfect) and the seaweed extract together for one pass, or should I apply them separately? If separately and on the same day, which goes on first? With my backpack sprayer, I consistently use 12 liters of water to make two passes on my lawn.
Hi Mike, I had a quick look on Amazon.de. I found this one www.amazon.de/TURBOGRUEN-Improves-Absorption-Irrigation-Fertiliser/dp/B08FX3W8CM/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=XNHRQDMNNVXT&keywords=wetting+agent+lawn&qid=1687086219&sprefix=wetting+agent%2Caps%2C71&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1.... As for the mixing, most weedkillers are tank mixable, and the seaweed should be perfectly fine (Ive done it many times), however always worth doing a quick Google on the products used to see if it says "not tank mixable". If you chose to do on separate days you can do either of them in any od=rder as they both work in different ways :)
@@LawnRight Thanks, Shaun! Knowing what to look for is half the battle. Based on your link, I found some liquid wetting agent that I can use in my sprayer.
I looked at the Compo instructions, and it is not recommended for the first year of new lawns. Instead, I bought the Weedol you recommended last year from a UK vendor.
You guys don’t use weed and feed granules, instead you use spray products. Is that the best option? I know granules need watering in but should I consider liquid chemicals
I've just never used them. My hesitation is I may get granules in flowerbeds but I guess with practice that wouldn't be an issue. I'm just used to the spray more than anything
I’ve tried both and found it easier to get an even coverage with spraying. With the granules it’s easy to get clumps where there’s a bit too much and then bare patches that I’ve managed to miss somehow. Watering it in seems to sort it out okay but I think spraying is simpler.
I definitely agree with missing areas and clumping, any tips on a good sprayer and chemicals. I’m guessing there are many and at different times of the year. Like everyone I just want a thick healthy lawn
Hi what do you mean? How to look after a lawn when there's no water then you can look at grey water (I have a video on surviving a hosepipe ban).. you can raise your mower height and keep it at least 2 to 3 inches through summer. Then minimise going on it..occasionally you could pip some seaweed on but nothing more really
@@LawnRight Mine just has 6 double stripes (3 of each) and looks the business. Quad stripes might look silly here but yours is wider, that's maybe another option.
Come on Shaun get a straight edge, tilt the mower back and measure the height of cut with the straight edge between the rollers takes all the guesswork out of it!
@@LawnRight tilt mower back, place any straight edge so it rests on the bottom of the front and back rollers - then measure from the top of the straight edge to the top of the bed knife. that gap is your cutting height. simples.
Hi sorry for the delay..I have sent things to northern Ireland before with no issues .. is that where you are located (sorry for the lack of understanding properly)
You ca train them to go in one area or plenty of water where theyve been right after they went.. or grow some grass in trays or plant pots to instantly transplant into any burnt areas after digging out the burnt bit
You would die if you saw my lawn it's so bad I don't no where I'm going wrong I just cart seem to fix it I've watched video after video but it just don't sit in my brain of what to do. my grass as turned from grass to dandelions and cats ears I think there called every day there is even more 😟 I think it's the sun in Leeds it's sending weed rays down to my lawn instead of sun rays 😂😂 Its just getting worse it's so upsetting my lawn is not big it's just a wide square im in a new build home . I live over the road from woods so dose that have anything to do with all the weeds 😂🤷🏼♀️I've not a clue 😭
Hi..start with this ua-cam.com/video/dC-1wOlXlzc/v-deo.html the sprayer is about £30 or you can go for a cheaper pump sprayer for half that..get the weedol for lawns.. practice with the sprayer first with just water in it.. get a feel for spraying water..walk at a walking pace over the lawn.. dont be tempted to go slower as you can burn the lawn.. be careful with weeds that are close to flowerbeds. I've killed several over the years..you can do this
Hi sorry for any confusion. The key is regular mowing at about the same height as what you usually do. I've varied the height of cut a few times to suit my preference and desire. Cutting longer can hlep in a few ways such as keeping the ground cooler and crowding out any weeds or weed grass Ed that like a lower cut. When I cut it short recently its because the poa seed heads were trying to cast seeds. Rightly or wrongly I decided to simply mow off the seed heads at that point. I'm now mowing taller again so will see how well it goes this year 🤞🤞
At 70 years of age caring for my lawn doesn’t improve my mental health it makes me depressed, especially having to cope with leather jackets, POA, worm-casts and everything else nature wants to throw at me.

What type of grass is that you have? The close up looks great
Here in the US, there's a product by Jonathan green called summer insect control that won't burn the lawn to help for insects and a organic one for grubs and insects
hi its this one www.hmseeds.co.uk/product-page/20kg-hpg-csi-turf-perennial-greens-grass-seed-mix

Is best to cut the lawn before you apply weedol?
No definitely not.. but not too long either so after cutting let it grow 2 to3 days then apply
At what rate did you apply the fertiliser per m2?
Sorry cant remember.. each product has a different rate and I went a quarter of that sorry
Getting it ready for our game of croquet 😊. Looking good 😎
Thanks.. never played it but sounds like a plan!
It's really looking good! Great advice, I'm gonna put it into practice now!
😊😊
That's just how I was taught many years ago on the courses
Hi. How do you get rid of clover in a lawn? Have been following your videos. Have scarified, overseeded, top dressed, fed, mowed regularly. Lawn looks the best it has in years. Have got rid of all the moss but can’t get rid of the clover. Thanks
Hi it should be easily controlled with weedol for lawns or resolva for lawns
Thanks for the speedy response. I have dogs so avoid weed killers but maybe could section bits off❤
Hi mate, whats the Emerald green contain?
Part wetting agent.. the rest is my secret blend 😊
Can you recommend a good battery mower with roller my friend
Hi I'm sorry I cant as I've nor ventured into battery gear yet. Robbie from premier lawns has done a fair bit
Hi seaweed can definitely be added whenever it suits
Also to stop your lawn drying out , water first thing in the morning 👍
@@thedj5914 thanks for the advice
@@stephenk4834 if your grass doesn’t bounce back after standing on it , it means it’s probably needing some water 👍
@@Mike--K yeah weedol is pretty decent. Worked well last season on mine
Looking good 👍
You guys don’t use weed and feed granules, instead you use spray products.
👍looking fantastic Sean👍 there's 2 thumbs up for you.

did you consider liquid iron in your cocktail?

I find it’s not good for my mental health at the moment 🤯 And still a show of 😂but I like it mate 😘👍
Ahhh thanks!! 😁
I like it thick yes :-)
do you think you can do a lawn care video without using any water please
Hi what do you mean? How to look after a lawn when there's no water then you can look at grey water (I have a video on surviving a hosepipe ban).. you can raise your mower height and keep it at least 2 to 3 inches through summer. Then minimise going on it..occasionally you could pip some seaweed on but nothing more really
@@LawnRight ta
Double width stripes...
I've tried it before.. may try again.. it's not a super wide garden but tempted 😊😊
@@LawnRight I'd also say go for it. Even on small patches the bigger stripes look good
@@LawnRight Mine just has 6 double stripes (3 of each) and looks the business. Quad stripes might look silly here but yours is wider, that's maybe another option.
Come on Shaun get a straight edge, tilt the mower back and measure the height of cut with the straight edge between the rollers takes all the guesswork out of it!
I need to look into this 😁 lol
@@LawnRight tilt mower back, place any straight edge so it rests on the bottom of the front and back rollers - then measure from the top of the straight edge to the top of the bed knife. that gap is your cutting height. simples.

You ca train them to go in one area or plenty of water where theyve been right after they went.. or grow some grass in trays or plant pots to instantly transplant into any burnt areas after digging out the burnt bit

Pointless with rye grass though, you never mention that
True.. This grass is a creeping csi rye from hurrells seeds but it's taking forever
I've killed several over the years..you can do this
I don't understand this video. you said that just cutting the tips of the grass makes the grass healthy. And now you are cutting it short
Baffling. You're trying to encourage lateral growth?
Nice Job! I am your new follower from Germany 😎🫡

How often should I apply seaweed?
Each product will advise.. multi mite can go down up to twice a week
