Gasket removal made easy with 3M Scotch-Brite Roloc Bristle Disc. Green wheel for Iron, Yellow for aluminum.

Perfect timing! Two things; 1. I know it was just a test ride but the squiding was cringe worthy buddy especially with a in progress bike. Not hating just being honest. 2. I'm surprised a community garage like Dirty Billy hasn't offered you some free wrench space in turn for advertisement.

I respect that, however this is my parents house and I didn't have my gloves there...probably didn't even have my jacket on account of the heat that day. In any case I'm a full grown man and I'm capable of understanding consequences of my own actions and calculating risks that I'm comfortable with. I would hope that this comes through in how I present myself to you guys. I'm quite aware of gear, but I'm not gonna skip a critical test ride in fear of some scratches.
Those community garages are honestly so expensive that I couldn't see them cutting me a break for advertisement...I gotta be honest, I kinda like having my own space, hours and tools despite what I have to work around. It's grown on me lol. If I were to work elsewhere, it would have to be my own garage.

Hey man, I'm not sure if someone else in the comments has brought this up, and it's also a bit late considering the engine's already out, but I've been told the easiest way to get the engine out of these is to strip it down until there's only two or three easily accessible bolts left holding it in, then lay the whole bike over on its side, run the last bolts out, and then lift the frame up and off of the engine.
I haven't had to do it myself so I can't vouch for it 100% but it might make getting it back in a bit easier if it does actually work.
Looking forward to seeing where this build takes you.

I got a CB500 PC32 few weeks ago and partly because of your videos i felt confident enough to do some minor work on it myself. I took the headers off and repainted them, did an oil and coolant change. Felt good :).

Tip: soak gasket area in old oil, petrol or coolant on it's respective parts for about 30 minutes. It peels right off afterwards.

@@Theillestrator1050 Still waiting on the Carbs which are being rebuilt by Mike Nixon in Arizona. I rebuilt the alternator, changed the oil & spark plugs, and cleaned/repaired the brake calipers.

Lol, you gotta remember that I'm working out on the sidewalk and the tools are at the back of the house. Instead of carrying 5 specific wrenches, I just bring out one crescent wrench. Easier clean up, less value stolen in the case a thief spots all my shit.
Believe you me, I have every tool in the book being in a home owner family lol

200$ to resurface you made a good choice 👍. If you were eating the metal before gasket with the glass technique then the surface was probably not very flat to begin with. 🙃

One thing I will note, not sure if its been covered here yet or not... Dont use oven cleaner on the aluminum heads, or anything aluminum for that matter. It will eat the aluminum, its fine to use on steel and chrome but nothing else. For the carbon build up on those brake cleaner would probably be better and safer.

For the gasket removal I use 2inch disposable plastic paint scrapers and wd-40. Buy 3 or4 of them for a buck apiece.
They won't damage the aluminum at all.
Patience is the order of that day.
Got you. I'll be honest though, I don't think I can go back to scraping (if the surface is rough) after doing the machine shop job... I'm just spoiled now as far as that goes lol

That head planing could get addicting. Fair price and fast plus it tries up the head.
I spent SIX HOURS scraping the head on my GPz750 head for the valve cover gasket. It is shaped like a convoluted figure eight and some parts were hard to get at.
The engine was in the frame and I wanted to keep the swarf away from the buckets.
I bought those scrapers in Home Depot for 89 cents each. Maybe they were 1 1/2" but the have a razor sharp edge that you can bare down on and they stay sharp longer than you would think.
I used wd-40 then switched to kerosene to soften the adhesive.
The beauty is you can't damage the aluminum.
Illestrator what is your preferred method for keeping track of all the bolts, nuts, spacers and other crap that comes off when you're doing your rebuilds

I think that it's going rough in terms of the expectation that I had for cheapness on the 550 lol. The k100 I was already expecting to go deep. This thing is getting to be a little more than I bargained for but it's all good

Having pulled a CB 550 engine before, I was waiting for the lengthy battle with the frozen oil filter cover bolt. What gives?

The horn has an adjustment screw.
Hmmm, Does that tend to back out, or need to be adjusted without ever being touched? This is from the cbr front end which sat out in the elements for 4 years so I just assumed it was full of water or spiders at some point.
If you get some sound just give it a turn and the horn will come back to life. That screw just puts a slight pressure on the metal diaphragm inside. You can turn the screw while energized.
Put an ohm meter across the terminals to see if the winding is open. If you get a reading you should be good to go.

@@Theillestrator1050 I bought a 2014 Ninja 300 last September and the horn was cracking. After adjusting the screw it worked perfectly fine. Essentially, the membrane is a metal dish-spring that needs a tension adjustment just like a guitar with its strings. There is a little Phillips screw for this adjustment on the back of the horn. As I was adjusting it, I checked it by connecting directly to the battery.
The reason for the adjustment is for the work hardening of the metal as the membrane vibrates

These come prepacked although some people will add more of their own

next time you do bearings, throw them bad boys in the freezer the night before you will have a much better experience installing.
I know the trick, I've done it several times here on the channel. I wouldn't say the wheel bearings were difficult or a bad experience at all here without freezing honestly.
