1976 Honda CB550 - Why I Bought it & How I Got it Running
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2020
- Actual wrenching starts at 6:15, for whom it may concern.
A heavily covered on Instagram fiasco to make this Honda run. Not as fleshed out as a BMW build episode but a general run down of what I went through.

Bloop bloop bloop
When she "bloop bloop" But what you really want is "Vvvvvvvvvv"
I guess it's kind of randomly asking but does anybody know a good place to stream new series online?
wooh he's alive, super excited for this one
Hope you enjoyed it
Again, perfect music selection, entertaining, informative, continue like that bro :)
Glad you enjoyed!
BRRROOOOO!!!! Where have you been??? I was just about to fly from London to find you!
(Yes... I've had notifications for years.)
😂 you guys gotta follow me on Instagram... UA-cam is a whole production thing. Instagram I'm on there daily
I followed your BMW build while I was repairing a K1200LT and restoring an 81 Suzuki GS650G. I bought a 74 CB550 pre-Rona already cafe’d but haven’t gotten around to fixing all the crap this guy did wrong before buying a blown up Ducati. I’m enjoying your videos and your love of bikes. It’s inspiring.
So glad to see this and more of your content. I always look forward to it man! Much love from Pittsburgh!
Great vid!! Always a pleasure to watch you work on your projects!!
Great vid and cool bike/project. Missed you and great to see you back.
Great to see you back mate, good job getting it running! Amazing how much you can learn if you're just prepared to have a go 😁👍🏻
I bought a new CB550 K1 in 1974. It was by far the best motorcycle I have ever owned. I wish I still had it today.
Omg he’s back. I’m watching this on my brake love the content
Hope you enjoyed!
Common Motor and their website and YT videos will be your best friend for this build. It definitely helped me with my CB200T and wrenching on the street up here in Harlem. Cheers!
Oh yeah I've heard of them. For sure lol. Thanks for watching and commenting
Good to see your back
Good to hear from you again. Glad you are moving on up, bike wise and life wise. Good style on the CB.
Worth the wait! The quality of your videos is top-notch. congrats man
Thank you 🤟🏾
Welcome back!
Nice to see you on a Honda! 🤟
Glad to see you back man!
Nice to produce some content after a while
Dude I'm now doing all my bike stuff. (I'm in England and we have so many test today before we can ride anything 600 and above) just past my first part of it. Your vids deffo help me out loads thank you so much and keep up the amazing work
36 minutes fly by like nothing. Watching your videos is like watching a really really good movie . Thank you for your content!
I owned a 1975 Honda 500/4...that's what they were sold as in Australia... when I was 17 hundreds of years ago.It was just 2 years old when I got it an I loved that bike. A stupid car driver wanting both lanes wrote me off on way to work one morning in 1978 and in 2020 I still miss that bike,I was very badly injured but still ride today.Cheers from Australia mate. New sub here.
Great to see you back at it. Carbed inline and a boxster is really perfect
Thanks for watching
Wooooo, been looking forward to this!
Hope you enjoyed it
Nice one. Glad to see you back on YT. 🤙🤙🤙
Welcome Back!!!
Glad to see you back! My Guzzi has been in the shop for a month and a half waiting on a bearing from italy
Yikes.... Italian bikes scare me lol
Welcome back, missed you!
Thanks!
Yay! Honda Honda Honda! Great to see you working your way though engine configurations and makes.
😎
Hi Illestrator! This was a GREAT video! Perfect in every way. Content. Composition. And bike was really cool. See you soon...in review of the comments...it seems like we all missed you and can't wait for more! Have a great weekend riding! Rick
Thanks for the praise... i was worried this didn't live up to a BMW episode in detail. Glad y'all enjoyed!
Dude! Some of us have work in the morning BST! Watch the rest tomorrow night, good so far👍
Dude. Solid video. Subscribed and can’t wait to see more.
Good one man. I follow the insta but I do enjoy the longer format with the UA-cam. 🤘🔥
awesome work man. this thing is crazy
Okay Mr. Documentary! Absolutely loved this video
😊
You're talented bro. Mad skills. Loving this video.
My man is back!!!!
🤟🏾
Good to see you back making videos. Great job of getting that old bike back on the streets.
Thank you very much
@ illestrator
Respect for the skill and dedication.
Thank you very much
Welcome back. Me and my buddy Ivan, from the Cotton Exchange in Savannah Ga met and you came up in our conversation. Small world. We were a little worried about you because of the B/S. Nice bike.
I appreciate the concern from you guys. Things have never been better personally. The world is a bit rough but I've atleast improved myself.
"Operation Decaf" caught me off guard and i spit my coffee out, good one. Also I enjoyed watching this, thanks for posting it.
Hey mate. Welcome back. I hope you and your family are all well and safe
Thanks man. You too
6 bikes is a lot of experience in a short amount of time. Glad you good G. Be safe brotha.
Dude, kudos for switching effortlessly into a new effort.
Maybe I am a silly worrier, but I am glad your world continues without a skip,, despite these terrible times.
Well i appreciate the concern. All is good over here. Thanks for watching and commenting
Welcome back!
Perfect New Project! Cbx next 😁👍🏾😎👍🏾
BTW, I bought a 2010 Z1000 last week and this bike is amazing Real Talk!
Congrats, enjoy the Z!
Love it ❤️ had one of these back in the eighties, great video, brings back memories 👍
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed!
Well illustrated sir. You just make we want to wrench. Even if its not the same vehicle. Thank you. In the words of Garvey Walden IV. “Dylan you motivate me baeby!!” “Time to beat those boots”.
Can't put my finger on it, but it is something with the way you edit you videos that are extremly unique. And it makes it very captivating. Good job on the bike!
Thanks. I try to give wrenching videos a more narrative twist!
Great film. Learnt something with the tank cleaning. 👍
Three quarters of the world don’t have enough sense to fix anything anymore. Good for you man.
yes, your alive, was getting worried, no posts anywhere I could find, good looking bike, lots of potential
Instagram lol. I also posted to UA-cam like last week to update everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video
Im pumped for the next vid!
It was supposed to be a one off but looks like I'll do more wrenching videos 🤔
Hello from Russia! I'm glad I found your channel!
Good luck with your ideas!)
Love your vids great new project!
Great job! Inspiring! Thanks for making the video!
Found a nice project bike! Was worth the wait, hope there is soon more to from the CB
Looks like I'll be covering it more. People like this bike alot lol
So awesome - looking forward to more build videos
Maybe there will be more... people seem to like this more than i expected lol
That's cool man, reminds me of my Nighthawk 550 I restored last summer. Just a Dual Cam version of your single there. Nice work, it's fun getting these old girls up to speed again.
Looks like it's coming together quickly. The systems tracing you did with that test light is really handy, I'll definitely put it to use on my project. It's an 86 yamaha radian 600. Thanks for the awesome content!
Yes sir, a test light is essential for electrical gremlins
I just learned a lot about wiring that I didn't know before, cheers bro
Great! Hope you can apply that to your bikes
welcome back missed ya
Thanks for watching!
Man Im liking this channel
I really appreciate your mechanical and electrical skill
😎 thanks. Electrics are pretty simple on older bikes to get your head around.
Haha, as a Washingtonian with friends in NY, listening to the trials of parking a bike safely in NY really hit.
Oh yeah on the street? It's a game. I've definitely been lucky to have a space lol.
@@Theillestrator1050 it's gotten crazy this summer with covid and the economy taking a shit. Seems like everyday you see someone post about their bike getting scooped up
You just got, in my opinion, the best handling Japanese bike of the '70's. I bought one in '91 and started making into a caferacer on day one. It was my only bike for 13 seasons until an asshole wrecked it out from underneath me. I still miss it dearly!
Unless you are not showing us all of the Googling or searching on the wiring diagram for this bike, you are great at troubleshooting! I have done this before and it is such a time killer. But, you really did your diligence on sticking with it. Well done!
Cool old bike! I enjoy the methodical approach you take with your work, man. I've just picked an 88 XV700 here in Aus, and it's in a similar way. The previous owner has stated it will run with all the extra parts in a plastic container. It's a project, and I'm going to keep your calm in mind while wrenching on this one. Thank God I have modern daily and can take my sweet time. Look forward to your next upload.
Best of luck to you with that. You have a daily, but dont get too complacent! That's how you end up with half done bikes!
- The illestrator - I know what you mean. I bought the modern bike so that I could work on older ones without the pressure of needing them going. I spent too many years trying to get bikes going while everyone else was out riding.
So, wow. Okay. I have to admit I haven't watched any videos for a long time, but covid let me finally catch up. Not sure if you remember... I found you through a friend because I also (used to) own a 86 BMW K100RT. I thoroughly loved that bike and it was a joy to own and ride, but just too damned finicky for a mild tinkerer like me. But I LOOOOOVE the direction you took yours. I just had very little-to no income even before covid hit, and couldn't even change bars. I eventually got so frustrated with my K that when the opportunity presented itself, I traded for a 2003 Suzuki SV1000S with a 2006 GSXR inverted fork conversion, and I cannot be happier. The guy wanted my K so bad he made a straight up trade, and in my area, the Suzuki SV bikes generally sell for much more than the K bikes do, plus he already had the fork conversion I was lusting after. It was kind of a no-brainer for me. Keep the awesome content coming. I finally landed a job (back up in Detroit), so as soon as that kicks in, I might hit you on Patreon. I'd love to share pics of my new ride.
Cool episode!
Hello from Greece.
Love your videos. Just wanted to mention I run lithium batteries to all my 4 bikes some already 4-5 years old and never ever had any issues.
Careful you don't miss your true calling. You are good at this!
Great video. I have a pretty clean 77 cb750 supersport and live in NYC. I know the anxiety of parking it in the street and of taking off the carbs for a cleaning. Have fun!
Thanks, likewise!
Yall crazy for towing that bike like that lol. Super impressive that teamwork though, he a real homie. Good to see you back, I've started a channel in your absence lol
Comment a link for it so when i return to read replies. Im on the mobile studio app so i can't click your avatar at the moment
@@Theillestrator1050 Will do, be safe bro
Smart move with a 70's honda, still admiring from across the pond.
Thanks alot
YEEEEESSSSS!!!!! Much love from the London, UK!
Thank you!
Damn good to see you man, i was getting worried. ✌
Thanks. Hope you enjoyed
Had a 2000 R1 sitting for seven years with old ass gas and it turned to chunky sludge also it rusted out the inside pretty nicely. Tryed straight vinager and something else, Cant't remember now . Anyway saw some dude on the tube and he showed a junkyard cb tank all F up and he used (apple cider) vinager and wala pretty shiny even new looking. No rust stains nothing. So I tryed it, Just wow and eco freindly Right.
Nice work with all you do man... Lets Roll
Holy shit, I'm only at 5:14 and you towin a bike through NYC!? BALLS! I gotta go to my buddies and so some wrenching of my own, but you know I'm gonna check out the rest of this when I get back. Dude you fuck'in ROCK!
😁 good luck!
Yes, I've been waiting for an update.
Hope you enjoyed!
Yeah buddy! Love those old Hondas. Glad the electrical stuff was pretty easy to figure out. My "83 Nighthawk had intermittent turn signals and brake light. It was my first bike and I wasn't much of a wrencher back then (still not much of one now tbh) and neither was my dad, so I just lived with it. Anyway, good luck.
I had similar issues on my Honda rebel after i crashed it...i pretty much waited until i got ready to sell it before i fixed the lights. I didn't have the will to work on the electrics for the longest until i just did it
I loved the interstate gas station toilet reference . Bloody apt.
Bro! I'm so happy your alive!
I don't have Instagram😒
Make one! All the cool pictures of bikes are there
The issue is a missing flux capacitor. It's nice that you are back posting videos again.
😂 of course, but i don't dare 88mph with these brakes
OH LOOK a Crankshaft seal (But no points)! Never got around to trying to install mine today, it was waaaaaaay to nice to not ride out in the countryside. Glad I did. Tomorrow is another day.
I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed your vlogs,Fri night viewing, sad😖. Looks like a good base to start from. I got my mates import sohc CB750 running and legal, same electrics, his had points. My biggest headache was that he gave me a can of five year old fuel, took me a while to figure that out!
Congrats on the 750 and im glad you enjoyed this one. I'll be covering this bike more since people liked it
Wow, this bike came a long way!! I’m starting to dig the whole Café Racing aesthetic and feel. I’d like to own one in the near future.
Can't beat that simplicity!
Hello, nice to see another 550 in the city ! Let’s see if we bump into each other for a ride once you get her all buttoned up.
Lil tip; for commuting with the heat and traffic we see here , try 20-50 for summer months and back to 10-40 during cooler months.
this guy is actually really smart and this is really informative stuff. accidentally clicked on this video and glad I did to be honest
I have owned a 73 cb500 four and it was a fantastic bike .
Also a 77 CB750 four the single overhead can Honda's are fun and bullet proof after you get it sorted .
The price you paid was fair but if you can get one stock for double that price life would have been easier but since you are not afraid of a wrench you will be fine .
Changing to an aftermarket aluminium swing arm will make handling much better although my 73 I had it dragging pegs up and down mount baldy in southern California ....
Look forward to future videos
The problem with new York city is that with running, decent condition bikes, they want RIDICULOUS money when it comes to vintage bikes. So like you said, my ideal option is to get a cheap bike and work on it since i know how. Gonna look into that swingarm
Thought Ducati NYC had taken you hostage ! Great to see you back 🙂
This was also my very first proper motorcycle back in '87. Mine was also a '76 model (here in England).
Half hour of my monday well spent
Just found your channel. Loved this vid...
"Just dip it in the gas station toilet and then sand it." Best instructions ever. :D
I love my cafe racer 1975 cb750k(my first bike) It was $100 and was just a roling chassis and engine. Not running no key battery oil tank most of the electonics fenders and water in the engine, I was in the exact place people say new motorcycle riders should not be. all you need for one of these bikes is a manual or two and google. Super simple machines. Still took me like 2 whole years of little interest and cleaning things buying important parts like the rectifier electronics, oil tank and changed the oily water. I finally just sent it one day and gave it gas and a battery(car battery) and bang got it running on a whole 2 cylinders but I was hooked. I just bought everything in the next week and ignored all the important things like carb rebuild and brake rebuild, it had a working rear drum brake. First time I rode the bike I had the craziest adrenaline high I thought it was the fastest thing in the world, I didn't make it out of first because I thought it was down to up shift. Really to much to say, I had a hell of a good time building my cafe and learning. I now ride a 83 XL600R Supermoto, I sorta became a wheelie addict. Most the time my cb750 sits In my garage, sometimes my friends will ride it but I haven't in months. I need to take a road trip on it and give the bike some love.
Great story. I can imagine the feeling. As long as you still have the bike around you... that's the great thing.
This is quality content
Great video as always my dude. You def should have got that guy to get you a better price under 1k. Seems he sold you shop donor bike that people stole and experimented on. LMAO at the gas station tiolet comment and your crocs + socks. Keeping it real as always. Always nice shoutout to Classic Octane enjoy his builds
Well he already got plenty of interest in the bike, and it was likely from hipsters with more money than me. So under 1k probably wouldnt have happened and the next day someone would have paid his asking price....but maybe $200 off atleast.
Glad you enjoyed this one
Thanks man this video helped me.
This is great!
Regards from The Netherlands buddy.
Thank you my friend
Good video. Learned a lot. Thanks.
I'm loving this CB
It's gonna be even more loveable when I'm done with it!
I hear you on the small storage situation. I love in a townhouse have my car with 1 motorcycle parked in front of car. A 8x10 patio with bmw k1100 and cx500 on it. And almost went and bought another.
😂😂 yeah that sounds about right...
