My Sony Hi-8 Handicam from 1998 actually does 16:9 wide (it's actually anamorphic video, I suppose it must have some sort of anamorphic lens on it). Hi Tom I have a Sony handy cam DCR TRV-265E can I use the mini A/V out Or the USB DV out to live stream to a capture card that converts to HDMI I think I can but what are your thoughts'
The DV out might be worth trying, but I haven't personally had much luck getting it to work with newer computers. I feel like it must be possible though, so that could very well be user error. But honestly, these little adapters work pretty well!
I have a Sony Hi 8mm digital camera with a DV jack connected by Fire wire to my laptop DV jack . Haha, my original GoPro died, otherwise I'd definitely try to throw it in the mix. IF I'm not mistaken, I think the very first GoPro was a still camera that shot film 🤔
Just wondering would using a composite capture cad and connecting it directly to my pc work or do I need the adapter and an hdmi capture card to be able to live stream?
There’s no reason not to give it a shot. There’s a good chance it’ll eventually just die after being powered on for an extended period, but I don’t know if that’s a few days or months or what 🤷🏻♂️
I got an older camera and would like to use it as my live stream camera, but having difficulty finding the drivers for it. The camera is a Sony DSR PDX10 DVcamera. It has a usb stream option, but i can't find the usb streaming driver anywhere. It was a old camera that my church used before they upgraded and it actually was used as webcam before, which finding the drivers was hard to find even then, but the computer has been upgraded and reformatted and those drivers were lost. I would love to upgrade my current webcam to this one as it is the only better one i have, but need some help in making it work, if its even possible. I got latest windows 10. If finding the driver isn't possible, would getting a capture card be the thing i would need to make it work as a webcam? Also as a side note, it uses DV Tapes, which i have got tape cleaners and ran them couple times, but when i play back a tape, there still is lines that show up on the display screen. I haven't tried connecting it to a tv and see if it plays ok or not, but if there was any solutions about that or maybe some deeper cleaning is needed to restore it. Thanks for any help, anyone is able to provide for this camera. I am hoping i can get it back up and running, instead of just having it sit on the historical self. lol
This isn't the first video I've seen from you, saw one the other day about 4k camcorders vs mirrorless or something, but just had it pop up when I searched "old camcorders". I would love if my room was this clean but it is quite the opposite...
You can either use the battery or the wall power. Lots of older batteries don't hold a charge very well anymore, so it's usually a good idea to run it from wall power if possible.
The method in this video is based on the A/V ports, but it is possible to use the DV port as well with certain adapters. This is actually something I've only recently figured out, so I'm planning to make a video on it as well. I don't know if it'd be good for sending a live signal, but it's definitely good for importing footage at a higher quality.
So you're using an RCA (A/V composite) to HDMI converter, then streaming the HDMI signal... Does somebody make an analog in (A/V composite, S-video, Component) to streaming protocol direct?
@@tombuck There's various products for CCTV/security systems for remote monitoring via the internet, but I've yet to find a livestreaming analog input device geared more toward home entertainment.
does video out get rid of the text you find in the viewfinder? i know it goes away on video playback but i trying to figure out if i could use mine like a wecam
Hi Tom! First at all, thanks for your video, its great. I want make a question: I managed to broadcast live but my MiniDV camera turns off after 10 minutes, would you know how to fix this? Or recommend cameras to which it does not happen?
I recently picked up a Sony Handycam which is Mini DV and it has the same thing where it shuts off after 5 minutes if you're not actively recording. So I guess the only solution is to have a bunch of tapes and swap them out every hour or whatever. Video 8 and Hi 8 ones don't have that issue I think, but the quality isn't as good
OBS is very picky about frame rates, so be sure that your OBS settings match the camera/HDMI converter (you might need to just switch between a bunch of different options until the image shows up on screen).
hey tom! i messaged on instagram but saw you’re still replying to comments on here (literally goated creator) but i was wondering would i need an el gato capture card for this? i picked up a sony F828 and it’s 19 years old, i saw the link you put for the device you used to connect to your pc and it would work but idk if i would need like an legato capture card, i love the fuzzy look and all that compared to super clean look that everyone has thank you for your time if you see this!
Hey Diego! Yes, you do need some sort of capture card (I usually use my ATEM). This will convert the signal to HDMI, but you'll still need something to run that HDMI signal into. Hope that makes sense!
@@tombuck ooo thank you Tom! i was JUST looking and doing some research so if i do have RCA to HDMI I would then plug that HDMI into a capture card/cam link then that capture card into pc?

I got a JVC Mini DV and Sony Handicam. JVC works fine but Sony Handicam color is very off on OBS. Not sure if it's the cable or some setting I'm missing on OBS
I’m wondering what the first GOPRO looks like now...? Is that retro yet!?
Haha, my original GoPro died, otherwise I'd definitely try to throw it in the mix. IF I'm not mistaken, I think the very first GoPro was a still camera that shot film 🤔
@@tombuck LOL! ...and the first vlogging wide angle lens was called a "selfie stick."
Just wondering would using a composite capture cad and connecting it directly to my pc work or do I need the adapter and an hdmi capture card to be able to live stream?
If you have a composite capture card that'll work, then it should be fine (just select that card as a source in your streaming software).
@@tombuck thanks! :3
Could I use an old Handycam as a streaming indoors security camera?
Hey thanks! I really appreciate that. Lighting is tricky, but it's fun to just keep experimenting (and making mistakes) with). 😁
Thanks you
You're welcome!
Can you use the sony dcr-sx41 as a webcam on your pc because i cant find the name of the port thats on the camera that also goes to hdmi please help
Is there something for Firewire?
I've found firewire to be a little tricky, but I believe there might be some sort of adapter that can do the trick (I'm still looking into it myself).
Question this camera is battery operated when you use it as a webcam do you still need batteries? Thank you 💜
You can either use the battery or the wall power. Lots of older batteries don't hold a charge very well anymore, so it's usually a good idea to run it from wall power if possible.
My camera has A/V R and dv ports, which one should I use
The method in this video is based on the A/V ports, but it is possible to use the DV port as well with certain adapters. This is actually something I've only recently figured out, so I'm planning to make a video on it as well. I don't know if it'd be good for sending a live signal, but it's definitely good for importing footage at a higher quality.
It has worked perfectly, thanks alot
And turquoise is your favorite colour
Hex code #1eaaff 👍
So you're using an RCA (A/V composite) to HDMI converter, then streaming the HDMI signal... Does somebody make an analog in (A/V composite, S-video, Component) to streaming protocol direct?
Not Tham I'm aware of, but that would be a very awesome niche product!
It really depends on the camera, but it usually goes away.
Video 8 and Hi 8 ones don't have that issue I think, but the quality isn't as good
whats the max recording time of sony handycam?
It depends on the tape, but usually between 1-2 hours.
@@tombuck ah damn but if i wanna go live on UA-cam everyday for like 10-15hours what's the best camera/camcorder for me?
is there a way to do it without the bloody capture card?, I just want to get my camcorder to work with OBS
The capture card is necessary to convert the signal into something your computer can understand.
Interesting because I set mine up before and it just turned off after a while if I didn't have a blank tape inside
Someone help!
I have a Sony dcr Tv11, I’ve connected everything and when I use it as a video on obs I just get a black screen.
OBS is very picky about frame rates, so be sure that your OBS settings match the camera/HDMI converter (you might need to just switch between a bunch of different options until the image shows up on screen).
i love your vid, do you strem
I do! Streaming is super fun.
Can I use that on android?
I'm not sure, but if you have some sort of capture card that works with Android, then there's no reason you shouldn't be able to connect this to it.
@@tombuck Ok thanks! I am glad you found out how to use old cameras for UA-cam! I have a old jvc camcorder that i was hoping i could use for UA-cam.
Don’t forget to turn your TV to channel 3 to watch VHS tapes
And give the TV a few minutes to warm up to full brightness 👍
I'm surprised by the audio quality of such old camera
An Aquabats fan I see :)
Oh yes, very much so.
Those old cameras starve for light man. you will get a clear picture with more light, also, an s-video signal will provide a better result
hey tom! i messaged on instagram but saw you’re still replying to comments on here (literally goated creator)
but i was wondering would i need an el gato capture card for this?
i picked up a sony F828 and it’s 19 years old, i saw the link you put for the device you used to connect to your pc and it would work but idk if i would need like an legato capture card, i love the fuzzy look and all that compared to super clean look that everyone has
thank you for your time if you see this!
Hey Diego! Yes, you do need some sort of capture card (I usually use my ATEM). This will convert the signal to HDMI, but you'll still need something to run that HDMI signal into. Hope that makes sense!
@@tombuck ooo thank you Tom! i was JUST looking and doing some research so if i do have RCA to HDMI I would then plug that HDMI into a capture card/cam link then that capture card into pc?
this is awesome! im gonna try this!!
Hope you have a lot of fun with it!
