Cancellara's days in the yellow jersey are almost all due to winning the prologue and then wearing the jersey for the first week when the GC hardly changes.
Spartacus is proving his quality as a rider right this moment in E3 Harelbeke, coming back in the front group after a mech failure that left him at the back of the race. He's huge!

Global Cycling Network I don't really believe the rumors. I also generally agree with your statements that it is not something that has been going on hidden for years, but I think it did warrant a mention.
+Matthew Martin Fabian Doesn't even trust electronic groupsets and uses a single layer of bar tape for Paris Roubaix. I highly doubt he would trust a motor, and a hard man like him wouldn't stoop that low. He's a multiple world time trial champion, I would give him some benefit of the doubt and assume he didn't use a motor.
yhep, have to agree with that. Tom out shines him in the classics but Fab is definitely the stronger rider over all. His TT ability puts him head and shoulders above in general terms as he can ride away from a peloton like only maybe Wiggins and Martin can match, Tom definitely can't. However Tom seems to be able to lay it all down in one long day better than anyone else and his bike handling over odd terrain is better
+Paul Liptrott And perhaps more accurately, Tom is the better sprinter (as most of his victories are on flat courses) whereas Fabian is a better all-arounder and much better time trialist.
Flat courses? These classics are in Netherlands ya know. They are both good at "short" steep climbs. Although it was those short steep climbs that had them both dropped yesterday but Cancellara put up a good fight
Tornado Tom was my idol growing up and is still one of my favourites regardless of wins as he suits the early season whilst sparticus is great all season long
Both are just beasts. Lucky to have seen them both competing against each other at their best. But let's see how this comparison goes mid April after Fabian adds a few more :)
Probably the toughest comparison to pick just one favorite. Fans of cycling are likely to miss both when these two retire. Just for my own view, the ability to come back strong from injuries, makes Cancellara an inspiration to me in my return to cycling. True to his nickname Spartacus, he is a true warrior.
it's like comparing caviar and truffles!! two completely different riders but both as exquisite as each other in their own right!!! after watching E3 today i doubt boonen would have made the comeback to the main bunch like spartacus tho? both amazing riders, can't really compare them as different types of rider, they are both awesome and will go down in history :0)
I'm a big Spartacus fan, and I didn't need Dan to convince me. But when I think of Cancellara and Boonen, beyond their rivalry in the spring classics, I think of the great respect they have for each other. That respect was visible when, a couple of years ago, right after the announcement of Boonen's wife miscarriage, Spartacus showed his support at the beginning of a race (was it Strade Bianche?). A touching moment.
Great vid guys. Two beasts of the sport. Only wish injury and sickness hadn't kept them from facing off against each other over the last few years. Hope Tom is up for the cobbles this year, because Cancellera is on fire at the moment. (he would have gone Top 10 at MSR too if not for Gaviria going down in front of him and Sagan too)
How about we all just click on that great looking espresso machine and chillax. They're both fantastic cyclists and I look forward to watching them race on the cobbles at least one more time this Spring.
Both Boonen and Cancellara have been great riders for the ages. Both have seven monument wins. Cancellara was also perhaps the greatest time trialist of all time with two Olympic gold medals which also helped him win many yellow jerseys. Boonen was the superior printer which helped him win more races overall. Along with Contador they are clearly the greatest riders of their generation and we should enjoy that we were able to delight in their achievements!
The better classics rider? Tom. The better cyclist? Fabian. I really love these keep doing them, hey Contador is retiring too! best climbers ever? Contador vs Froome?
+Mannuel Corona hard one too but i think contador is the best tour (tour, giro and vuelta) rider of this generation , off course he is older now and therefor maybe not anymore at his prime but he is on top for almost 10 years and eachtime there were other rivals yet always his name was at the favo list
One more fun fact about Fabian. Fabian has a bridge named after him when he won his first of two double Flanders-Roubaix victories in 2010. The bridge is in his hometown in Ittigen.
He's getting a road named after him that appears in the race he's just won the other week, that in Belgium now that says it all about his over all ability. Can't remember which race it is but it was his 4th win this time.
Great video... I thought I saw a vain popping out on Matt's neck as he was trying to make his point... Both are great riders and one of the many reasons I enjoying watching pro cycling..
I can't choose they are both my cycling heroes. (Btw Boonen won Kuurne 3x not 2x). But it was real fun to watch the two being compared, I give you that.
Sorry for being late! I don't think that this is a fair question. Tom is a classic rider(an excellent one) while Fabian was (now retired) a legend of power cycling! Both are great cyclists (look at their stats) that provided us with incredible moments. Truly, I have enjoyed them both
Great video. I recall Fabian had a couple poorly-time collar bone fractures that kept him out of races. May be true for Tom as well (injury reducing opportunities).
Fabian, all the way. Boonen was amazing but not in the same way. Fabian was monstrous. His power was unrivaled. He was better alone (TT) and he was better in the mountains, for his team.
can it be a tie? theyre both phenomenal with slightly different specificity in the way they ride. in an outright sprint in their prime boonen wins, in a tt fabian wins, in an endurance based effort they come out equal and when it comes to getting over the mountains they both ride together and suffer through it.
Cancellara walked on to the road in E3 2016, put his hand up casually and stopped a tinkoff car and all other support cars behind it as well as blocking some riders, just to get to his spare bike. Not considering he chased the leading group back after his mechanical cost him 2 minutes. That's boss.
Thing is Fabian had a gradual career but Boonen 2004, 2005 and 2006 was simply mental. Probably the most dominant riding we've seen since Merckx and haven't seen since. In 2007 and 2008 he was still good but because he was a little bit less and everyone rode his wheel that gave his teammate Devolder 2 wins in Flanders even though Boonen was probably the best rider in those races. After that he was good but not great with the exception of 2012. Boonen was the best classics rider, overall I place them on equal footing.
Cancellara a great rider. But as a classics rider, Boonen is better. Co record holder in two of the 5 monuments. World road race champ - TT doesn't count for assessing them as classics riders.
strangely, there was never that much of a rivalry between them. Boonen dominated early on and then Cancellara did for a while. Didn't even exchanged words or anything.
Of course it's Spartacus, don't know why this is even a question. He's won literally every type of classic, and multiple times too for many of them. Boonen is good too, but his dominance is limited to the cobbled races.
Every type of classic? Other than MSR (and Boonen's been on the podium of it)he's won only the same type of classics than Boonen! In the end it all comes down to: Cancellara is the better ITT, Boonen is the better sprinter. Personally, I find Boonen just cooler.
Please tell us about 21 stages of tour de France and why Fabian cancellara is greatest winner of tour de France because Tom Burton was the greatest competition he got. Its impressive how much Cancellara has won, considering, he is not a good sprinter. Also he has been riding on bad teams at times. And other riders just sitting on his wheels. Bonnen has had one of the best classics team on his side since the beginning.
I know this comment is 2 years old..though boonen had a stronger team cance was always the leader, where boonen has lost classics because of his teammates think devolder terpstra etc
Oops, just saw the list of GCN sponsors... Answered my own question using Wikipedia anyway, Giovanni Pinarello was a pro cyclist before he became a frame/bike maker...
A bit off topic, but I am sure by now everyone has seen Sagan and Cancellara avoid going down in Milan Sanremo? 1. Has Sagan EVER come off the bike?!! 2. That sprint makes me seriously question whether disc brakes are needed. Sagan does bot lock up at all, and Cancellara locks up completely, does a controlled skid and rights himself.
