- A playthrough of LJN's 1992 platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice for the Game Boy was the second game based on the license that was both developed by Rare Ltd. and published by LJN. So, how does it compare to the NES game?
Quite well, I must say.
Focusing more on the Beetlejuice cartoon than on the movie, the Game Boy version makes MUCH better use of its source material than its NES counterpart does. The cinematics all use some excellent looking renditions of the characters, the dialogue all fits the characters extremely well, and the general structure of the game makes much more sense this time around.
The game is set up much like all of the early 90s Addams Family games. You explore the Deetz mansion and its grounds, ducking into rooms to take care of random poltergeists, ghosts, and other "undead" stuff. There's a ton of variation on each of these stages, as well - while all of it is posed as platforming, there are boss battles, environment-based puzzles, and some good old fashioned shoot everything in sight action. It's not perfect - some of these games are executed much better than others - but on the whole, it's a great deal of fun to play.
It's also quite difficult until you've really got it down, but if you were a fan of the cartoon, Beetlejuice is quite the serviceable game with a typically amazing soundtrack from David Wise. I mean, in what other game are you going to be able to run around with Day-o playing in the background? :D
While neither Beetlejuice was ever going to see a GOTY award, I definitely have to say that this Game Boy original beats the mediocre NES title in just about every way. Not too often you get to say that!

It might not be the best Game Boy game of all time, but the handheld Beetlejuice is a surprisingly good effort after the really mediocre NES title. It looks great, and you really can't beat the patently awesome Rare/David Wise soundtrack!
Please, what is the emulator's name?
@@gonzalopereira3632Joe momma... nah jk, but @op ooh can you try this game on gbc to see if it makes it even better.. for if it is got as most iirc reading that gb games have the color still in them just in upto four colors for the super gameboy player but that means for gbc in backwards compatible mode/use it works for givong it four of ,ultiple color pallet variants.. however I wanna see the actual default one if possoble feasible etc.
Completely better than the NES version, not only has better controls, dialogs, but it is also varied.
played the HELL out of this on roadtrips
This game came out one month after the cartoon had ended.
This game was hard af but it got me through some great times as a kid. Nostalgia lvl 💯
Just for funsies out curiousity and meh laziness to not look it up do you recall if you ever took it apart for needing to replace anything... did this title jave a battery cprom/cmos ie clock/save battery coin/button cell battery that may potentially leak and or go bad if not replaced periodically?
10:41 oh lmao no joke man like you really meant thar hehehe, like it is just almost as hard in my honest opinion, to from memory back when I was a kid to do if not still is hopefully though I do not need to replay througj to find outh ow bowsers inside story ends lmao had it for years never finished the game... man tons of games not just Pacman that I have not finished lol.
Sidenote also for funsies- ehh.. how many batteries did you go through trynna get through that part hehehe sorry just gotta know lol of ya recall how many that is at 10:36
Rare saves the Day and redimes itself again.
I hope Mike Matei adds this one to his playthoughts
"Two hours of doggystyle and going again. Load was fukin huge!!"
10 inches.
That minecart section was some complete bullshit.
Big time driving me nuts
Came here for the horrible puzzle at 23.52! I hate those kinds, couldn't figure it out, and the bonus stage never ends too unless you finish it! Thanks a lot NintendoComplete!!
While also developed by Rare and published by LJN, this a quite different from its NES counterpart, even though it is also a side-scrolling 2-D platformer. This Game Boy version of this game, Beetlejuice is based on the likenesses from the Beetlejuice animated Saturday morning/weekday afternoon TV cartoon series (itself was based on the 1988 film of the same title) off of ABC/Fox Kids back in the early 90's, and carries the subtitle of Horrific Hijinx From the Neitherworld. This is way better than the NES film Beetlejuice game. This series of impromptu minigames and random challenges is not an animated series-flavored port of the NES version, despite the same developer and publisher. Weirdly, despite being based off the cartoon, this version actually uses covers of songs used in the movie unlike the NES version.
The game begins with the player taking control of Beetlejuice as he attempts to get rid of all the ghosts that he invited into Lydia Deetz's house (where she lives with her mother and father). He must rescue Lydia from the evil Astoroth. Using bio-exorcist magic, players must defeat undead creatures through the cemetery and inside the Neitherworld. Pogosnake (that operates in a similar fashion to Super Mario World's Yoshi). There are some elements of animated violence along with a dark Goth theme.
Good old days.
Better than the NES film Beetlejuice game definitely
That filter looks awesome. Just like the real thing
This has to be the music of David wise. Fucking awsome.
Ahhh, good old Game Boy, where most of the game library were weird license platformers
Not necessarily, there were loads of original games, and lots of NES games that made the leap with their characters to the Gameboy.
I remember hating everything after the statues outside of the house. From the minecart on, it was like everything was 1-hit death and it felt cheap and just drained all my lives. I couldn't handle it as a kid.
Ive had that statue moving section song stuck in my head for like 30 years. Forgot where it was from. Thank you.
Never had this game but loved that it was based on the animated series. All the toys and whatnot were tie-ins for the movie IIRC.
I love this Game! 💪
Beetlejuice: It’s Showtime
Peach: now it’s my showtime!
Music isn't dissimilar to the Donkey Kong Land games a few years later. I definitely hear some of the same instruments.
That’s because Beetlejuice for NES and Game Boy and Donkey Kong Land were both developed by Rareware. In fact, David Wise composed the soundtrack for both games.
I can't believe that they made a cartoon of this movie even though in the film Beetlejuice knocks down a fake tree, screamed "NICE F*CKIN' MODEL!" And honked his crotch.
Joey Roller That's because kids loved the film. I used to impersonate Beetlejuice back in elementary school. I even did a talent show impersonating him in front of the school (didn't say those lines though) and the kids laughed so much they wanted to see it again. Principal had no idea what it was though. I guess kids entertainment was different back then.
That's one hell of a story man! Me, I was too afraid to even watch the movie as a kid in elementary. I always looked outside my window where my school was right across and always imagined Beetlejuice stalking the baseball field. Creepy as hell. Loved the cartoon though.
Nicolas Charron i have both the movie n cartoon series i likr the cartoon more lol
The cartoon was surprisingly solid, and morbid in it's own way.
That's nothing. The 80's was chock full O' Saturday Morning Cartoons based on R Rated Films. Rambo, RoboCop, and even Toxic Avenger got themselves a toned down show the kiddies could enjoy. Heck Ghostbusters had a quite popular cartoon called The Real Ghostbusters based on it despite it being a film where it had its protagonists openly smoking, drinking, talking about casual sex, and just swearing whenever they saw fit.
They never advertised this on TV.
The Rare era beforw Dkc... Wow
BJ's face just looks like that Uboa thing from Yume Nikki.
great game
Nice
REAL DOT MATRIX STUFF...NOSTALGIA OVERDOSE
Omg ive nvr seen this versin b4 lol
Avgn should review this
Sure, but one bad thing, it's LJN, his curse
5:56 hey, she just said his name for the third time! Why didn't he disappear?
Woah man this game if I hqd to guess has a combined variation of soo many titles man that it is like probable in my honest opinion if you wanted to not only play this for itself but also for a way to experience all a whole bunch of potentially other games by whatever way if you will lmao yeah bad description I know but yeah...
Man just try because it may be based on or referencing other titles that for at least nowdays if not even when it was new because of prices having only inflated over time vs going down for most or all game paks nowdays because of being discontinued in gb form in 03? Iirc from research gameboy/nes/snes/famicom/superfamicom/gbc/n64 was all discontinued in 2003 from what I understand.
Sp yeah for what this is from just never having seen this game before to having wondered if it was a game... that looks like it is gotten to have multiple easter eggs of sorts in form of mini games for the various stages/levels etc if you know what I am saying..
😳♥️👍
Filtered?
worse than nes beetlejuice
Me and my sis have been trying to beat this since 1995, you made it look so easy! 🥲
