Nhl highlights today 2023 - On hockey night in canada , we got predators vs oilers in the afternoon, and it was the same somber story for the edmonton oilers highlights and their fans. Connor mcdavid and leon draisaitl don't look like themselves, but even casual nhl hockey viewers will tell you the team's problems go MUCH deeper than that. Obviously, eyes will look to the goaltending tandem of stuart skinner and jack campbell , and the defence spearheaded by darnell nurse and his contract which is richer than cale makar. Nhl highlights 2023 predators vs oilers , we might see some trade rumors circle around this team, stay tuned for hockey news. - Спорт
It’s prob deflating as hell for mcdavid and drai knowing that even if they score 3-4-5 goals there’s a good chance they’ll give up 4-5 every game right now.
It's deflating as hell to the rest of the team and city that these two don't play 200 ft, as often as they should, and their giveaways create just about as many scoring chances as they create for themselves..
It’s been like that for as long as I can remember.
That's the system. Make the opposition score as many as Connor and Leon.@@mclekrell
it's those two who are eating such a large chunk of edmonton's cap space they can't afford a solid defense or good goalie, one of the two will have to go if the oilers want to save their season otherwise oiler fans are looking at a rebuild
Trade McDud. Overrated clown
Two words: Dustin Shwartz. How this guy still has a job after all these years as the team's goalie coach, I'll never know.
Yeah our goalies consistently underperform and then go to other markets and have a resurgence under a different goalie coach. It happened with Dubnyk, Talbot and Brossoit.
I agree with this statement. To add to it, I think it might not just be a goalie coach problem. If you look at teams that are built from the goalie out ((I am aware that this team is "centered"(sorry had to do it lol) around McD and Drai)), the defense is built to compliment the goalie and vice versa-almost as a 3 man unit in and around the blue paint where there are almost set plays or contingencies in the case of bad rebounds, etc. Also, these teams play what could be described as proactive defense but not necessarily aggressive defense, although that is not out of the question. The Oilers for the longest time, don't have such a system in play. They seem to play a reactive style of defense where the goalie is literally the last resort, usually to try to stop a AAA grade chance against because of a defensive miscue. They really need to start introducing and integrating team defense concepts that utilize the goalies strengths and mitigate their weaknesses. It doesn't help that the goalies are completely different, and that they are more 1A 1B. Conversely, I know there is a trend towards not needing a superstar goalie, but ones that are good enough (Col, VGK, etc) where grade A chances and shots are suppressed by team defense and counterattacks are highlighted for offense. Maybe that's why Woody wanted to change the D Zone and N zone play. The Vegas series exposed us in a way I'm game 5 and 6. I'm hoping the Oilers use this adversity to find their own defensive and offensive success as all champions do.
Yes , absolutely correct time for an nhl calibre goaltending coach, I remember seeing Curtis Joseph in an interview saying he would like that job, about the same time they hired the goalie coach they have now. Cujo was one of thier best goalkeepers ever in Edmonton and he didn’t get the job
I just hate that Campbell and Skinner are struggling, they’re such great guys
It's hard for them to even have a chance when the guys in front of them just suck. Need so much more help on the blue line
With the amount of cross crease plays and odd man rushes I've seen Skinner and Campbell face per game so far, it's surprising their save percentages aren't in the 70's.
Being a goalie for the Oilers is like playing the COD World At War campaign on Veteran difficulty.
CAMPBELL SUCKS WITH HIS 25 MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT.. THE GUY IS HORRIBLE....
Ur right they are good guys and they have come up big in some games but man. The defense is not helping
It doesn't matter how good your goalie is if your defense is trash.

The quality of goaltending in Edmonton has one source. The goalie coach. He’s ruined EVERY goalie we’ve ever had.
The reason why Edmonton's goaltending sucks is because they have no defense. If you keep exposing your goalies, the more they're going to break. It's not a coincidence that Campbell went from outperforming Carey Price in the playoffs to immediately being unable to stop a beachball. This is what happens when you blow the equivalent of McDavid's contract on traffic cones. Nurse's 9.25M + Ceci's 3.25M = 12.5M. That right there is the problem. You can get away with mediocre goaltending and top heavy scoring if you have good defense. There's a reason why Colorado was able to win when Kuemper had a below average SV%. Oilers country is overvaluing the importance of goaltending. Defense wins championships, and the last 5 Cup winners are proof of that.
You are speaking the absolute truth!
They only have no Defense because the Coach cannot Read and React then adjust his System @ NHL speeds...I can prove it..statisticaly and also by the Eye-Test .No one else has an explanation beyond playing the blame game , no one is bringing in a NewAge solution that will turn it around.Help the Coach or you will be doomed, Streamline your processes or add a Consultant. Its just a Systems issue so dont start changing tires and spark plugs.
So true man!
It's also their goalie coach. The same goalie coach has been around for 10 years and he teaches very bad habits. I see the same goalie habits develop in multiple different goaltenders, they all end up playing the same style. Yes the defense sucks too though.
@@abovewater6918 Schwartz was brought in to try to use forced changes to Goaltenders Styles to counter specific shots that were terrorizing Oiler Goalies .. instead of adjusting the System to stop the bleeding because they simply had no idea how to do that they chose to force Goalies to change their positioning instead...lol lol lol...seriously.... then another specific type of shot began crushing all NHL Goalies so they tried the scam again and forced their Goalies to change even more....what kind of nutbar tries to re-teach a Pro level Goalie to counter an opponents System tactics. System generated Shot suppression might be a smarter option lol lol lol.
Yes, Campbell and Skinner aren't stellar, that is true, but even Hellebuyck or Vasilevskiy would look bad with this Oilers defensive play. I am also surprised that McDavid and Draisaitl aren't getting more heat. McDavid looked off even before his injury. In that match against Philadelphia he didn't even have a single shot recorded in the entire game. Draisaitl had only one shot in this last one. Right now almost the entire team is down. Gagner coming back helped a bit and Foegele actually delivers a lot of energy in every game (most shots for example in the last game), and also Nudgent-Hopkins looks decent enough. But the rest of the team looks as if they are out of energy all the time. Even McDavid and Draisaitl. Something is off in that locker room, and I hope that they can fix this before it's too late for this year's campaign.
I'm with you there. Mcdavid doesn't look like himself at all. He looks totally disengaged.
@@people3865 starting to wonder if something happened between the team
It becoming apparent they need to trade 1 and break this thing up. You can get 2 very good defenseman for drai and maybe a promising goalie.
The problem is in the room as much as on the ice. We won't hear about it, anytime soon, and we shouldn't, but they need to address it.
Foegele is shocking me in these past few games. Honestly get him confused with McDavid when I can't see his jersey number.
Just remember, the Oilers could have taken Jesper Wallstedt in the draft, but traded down and took another forward instead🤦♂️
That pissed me off
Xavier isn’t bad, but still should’ve taken Wallstedt
Jesper Wallstedt haven't even played a game in the NHL yet. We have no idea how he'll perform among the best player's on the planet.
Just remember, all 21 teams at the time, could have taken Luc Robitaille, 8 times each.
Hindsight............ and all that.
The goalie's name literally starts with "wall", you know he'll be good
Nurse makes way too much money for what he brings to the Oilers.
More than Makar! 🤯
I'd agree
Get rid of him already!!!
You know the keeper situation is dire when you see Holland browsing for Koskinen's number on his phone.
Johnny. I have played goal for 55 years. It is not the goalies. Playing goal is pattern recognition and reaction subconsciously. If the defense is unreliable you can't recognize the pattern and react late (1/1000th of a second) against NHL shooters your dead. Name one defenseman excelling? They don't even trust each other. The pattern is off by a 1/1000th of a second or more for the defense also. Go to basics and repeatable dumps, which high skilled forwards hate but that is how you get the pattern to work. Play like children until you don't have to.
100%
Its the System changes clearly. Its all about the System Management we are seeing. LVK won because we were Outcoached which simply means their Coaches wielded their SYSTEM better than Woodys Group wielded theirs. They Read and Reacted to Woodys tactics faster and more accurately. No System changes were needed this year, if accurate causation of the last 2 consecutive years of Playoff losing is brought to light then everyone will agree on that. But you see Friend because the Oilers and Woody cannot self-diagnose(or they would not have lost) they made knee-jerk reactions based upon flawed causality origins. They screwed up by making System changes. Even tiny System changes upset the Apple barrel....just like tiny ones can make you a Champion. 9 Head coaches and 9 Systems deconstructed makes me a bit of an expert. The single most important thing you said was the reality of the time spans we are discussing when it comes to read and reacts...people really have no clue....even lifelong players....because you dont really get it till you compare AHL to NHL Teamplay...the game execution speeds increase because of drastically improved Systems play...not faster guys...the System makes you faster and the System makes you a better more accurate shooter and the System makes you a Vezina winning Goalie....SYSTEM MEANS TEAMWORK.... its not a magic mystery word designed to terrify people.
I am taking classes in hypnotism and lesson one was your brain adopts an idea without your permission and then you rationalize that idea, not because you are right but because your ego tells you too. The rare person will tear up the plan and try again. They love their idea and it would be ego death to tear up that plan. You should see your idea and your ego as a invaluable, inanimate thing you can't protect, but most people see their ego as their core and it must be protected and defended against all other ideas right until you are a unemployed hockey coach looking for new ideas.

PS. I am not a NHL coach, and being exactly correct and being spectacularly wrong feels the same, so maybe I don't know.
Just a reminder that despite letting in 20 goals over the last 2 games, the Sharks netminders have better save percentages than Skinner and Campbell do. Yeah... its that bad
Had to look it up because I didn't believe it.
Blackwood: .879 SV%
Koskinen: .876 SV%
Campbell: .873 SV%
Skinner: .861 SV%
Damn.
(This doesn't include Chrona, who played 31 minutes and allowed 4 goals on a .765SV% on the Sharks however)
Mcdavid probably reinjured himself making the selfish move to come back early for his reputation and brand based on that Mcdavid is not captain material
Hockey players always rush of the injury list, its really dumb
I agree McD and Drai have been cold. If this team wants to win legitimately(dominate 5v5, possession etc.), they need to develop the defensive backbone that all Cup champions have. So when their top 2 stars aren't on their games, they can fall back on their system play to keep GA down. Right now, energy and jump seem to be the top problem from offense all the way down to goaltending. It doesn't help that the pressure is mounting. They are also dealing with injuries to their forward group that lacks numbers due to the cap. I also think that having early captain skates and then camp and then pre season has a similar effect on their energy levels that playing in deep playoff runs does to other teams. Sure they started early, but that means they had less rest and are feeling the strain against teams that have higher energy and jump. Also, Eckholm missed all the pre season and camp so he's on a different level than the rest. Then there's the new system play that is clearly needing time to be internalized throughout the team. On top of it all, they still have to back check hard like in their old system but be expected to play passive in the N zone? They're getting scorched with rush goals due to advanced counterattacking strategies from what seems like every other team. Their PK is horrendous, their PP is top 10 but not good enough to save them like last year. The style of play in the O-zone is a carbon copy every game during this "slump" which is a carbon copy of games 5 and 6 against VGK last year. We are getting kept to the outside and are getting outchanced in the grade A chances dept. It's like we are playing Sutter's 2012 style hockey. Everything is messed up now and I think this is a great chance for Woody and co to figure out a new strat quickly so the boys have something to hang their hats on, but hes gotta do it quick, and with a relatively short bench, so everybody's gotta buy in and dig deep, otherwise I dont see us even making the playoffs.
The reliance on powerplays is a problem. The best teams seem to be built around 5 against 5 play. Also, they have the ability to wear the other team down during those long, long, 5 on 5 sessions when there are few whistles. People forget that that was part of the success of the Gretzky Oilers: Gretzky would stay out for 2 minutes straight when there were no whistles and he would take advantage of the chaos and breakdowns. Draisaitl and McD are certainly able to do the same.
If they want to do anything, they need to get rid of nurse and Campbell’s contracts. Absolute robbery of cap space and is also the reason for no solid depth players. Maybe it’s time for a new Gm
Nurse was Chirelli?
They need to fire Dustin Schwartz!!!
He’s been the Oilers goalie coach since 2014, and has constantly failed to help develop the goalies. Such a joke that he’s still employed.
Something is going on in Colorado as of late, too…
The first thing I do in NHL franchise mode is trade for a better goaltender lol, I kinda wish we could do that in reality
Miami got Hill. Untouchable. Things can be done.
CAMPBELL SUCKS, AND HIS 25 MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT MAKE MOVEMENT IMPOSSIBLE... THE GUY SUCKS, WHO WOULD WANT HIM?
And you would FAIL. That's why NHL franchise mode is a joke compared to actual NHL. No goaltender will save this Edmonton team. Lol to your brain.
@@markiv2942 Take a deep breath, sip on your juice, and calm down.
@@markiv2942 why are you so pissed at me lol
At some point, Dustin Schwartz has to be called into question. He's been with Edmonton now for almost 10 years, and every single goalie in that time-frame has been utter shit. And I don't want to hear about how the goalies are the problem, because as soon as they leave Edmonton, they become better and are decent goalies again.
And at this point in time, I'd rather have Smith and Koskinen. They were consistent.
One of the major probllems is the Oilers defense doesn't feel like playing defense. Bouchard's only interested in piling up his point total, and for some strange reason a taller and bigger Nurse can't handle Ryan O'Reilly...?
The same goalie coach has been around for 10 years and he teaches very bad habits. I see the same goalie habits develop in many different goaltenders over the years there, they all end up playing the same horrible style. Yes the defense sucks too though.
I think Woodcroft needs to swallow his pride and revert the defensive structure changes because they clearly aren't working. He calls them "growing pains" but when your one of the worst defensive teams in the league and playing 2 shaky goaltenders game after game, you gotta change things
Yep, the guys are moving decent and even with mcdavid and drai not llaying like the usually do they arent playing horribke they just usually play so much better that their below average play is really obvious. But everybody just looks lost out there
you're*
You can't coach defense when your defensemen are all traffic cones.
Connor and Leon are tired of doing everything. They are just frustrated and tired of it.
Define doing everything?
You know already dont ya? Cmon you know... setting Hits, blocking shots, setting a physical tone and putting up big numbers 😉😉😉
Maybe they should sign somewhere else then. They won’t win with the oilers
@@ryanroddy15 i see leon in a predators jersey as soon as that contract's up.
They definitely don't look like they're having fun out there.
That time you said "Nurse makes more than Cale Makar", yeah, I had to go double check that...and then throw up a little.
I think its time for the Oilers to call up Olivier Rodrigue and see how he can handle 5-8 games. This would give Holland time to go out and look for a goaltender while seeing what this kid as got in the tank.
look for a goalie with what? they have no cap space to sign a solid goalie.....move mcdavid he is likely to leave in two years anyway when he is a UFA and he will want to move south to try and capture a cup
Campbell + 1st for Allen
Campbell for Gibson calling it.
I'd try looking deeper than just replacing the goaltender. They need to replace the goalie coach, Dustin Schwartz. There's a reason that goalies that have left Edmonton tend to play better, and goalies that come to Edmonton tend to play worse. Simply replacing the goalie isn't going to fix their issue, as goalies have to work with goalie coaches. And the one constant for the past 10 seasons is Dustin Schwartz. And outside of Talbot's 2016-17 season, the goaltending has been this team's main problem.
@@pomerlain8924 you might have a point.
There isn’t any game breakers available that would make sense for the Oilers. Maybe a package of Gibson and Gudas to the Oilers would help.
McDavid and Drais are tired of saving the day. The goalies are not the problem. The defense needs to reduce the quality of scoring chances. Defense is the most glaring issue.
They rarely are ,Look at Vegas they plowed through what 5/6 lasted year ? I'm a Canes fan and everyone was complaining about the goalies early this year cause they started out rough and I was like you could have Patty Roy back there and it won't make a difference if especially the forwards are playing lackadaisical defense . The league is too good now and if you leave dudes open shots in the red zone even fourth liners will light you up no matter who is in goal .
Refs didn't help.
Honestly I just think moral took a huge hit after the playoff loss to Vegas, and they wanted to come back and be better this year but then started off with back-to-back losses against the Canucks and I think that just killed them
Vegas exposed them as a soft team and its been all downhill since. Maybe trying to goon up the knights was a mistake?
Vegas exposed them as a 1-trick PP pony. Drai and McFraud cannot carry a team for 90+ games
@@frederickglass1583 McFraud... like what? How do you people come up with this shit.
I think you are right: the team began to work toward forcing penalties out of the other team -- expecting penalties even -- and then gearing up to score on the powerplays. I'd be interested to know if there is a statistic indicating the number of game-winning or game tying goals produced by power plays. Because I think you'd see that the Oilers depended on powerplay goals hugely. And because of the long-standing flaw in the NHL of not calling the playoffs the way you do the regular season: Edmonton gets less powerplays and in turn deals with more impediments and illegal containment. When people talk about a team being "soft" in the playoffs they often mean "ill adapted to the rule changes." Injuries and reduced prosecution of the rules explain how many superior teams don't end up winning the cup.
But your point is really interesting: it's all about the carry over from last season. Same group of players basically, same pressures on the key 5 or 6 players, increased sense that this has to be the year. Because everybody assumes that with a relatively young core, you will improve year by year, at least until the core is 29 or maybe 30 years of age. I think 2/3rds of their problem is psychological. Or sociological, in the sense the majority of the team agrees on what was expected coming off of last year.
I think that a better -- more experienced/NHL known coach? -- would have been able to convince them that the games to the Canucks were eye-openers, but just one-offs, not to be taken too seriously. Embarrassing, sure, but not serious. Joke it up, have some fun about it. To me: McD in particular doesn't seem to be able to laugh things off, too serious maybe. It probably works for him, but it might affect other players a bit. Teams always have practical jokers, and characters: maybe the team lacks that now. The coach may not be able to supply this either.
You're right about McDavid, although he hasn't been up for it since the beginning of the season, not just the injury. Definitely need to get rid of Nurse. As for depth scoring, take a look at last year's stats; it was there and it will be again.
You can't get rid of Nurse, no one would even take him.
No team is going to take Nurse, that is one of the worst contracts in the NHL right now. An absolutely subpar defenseman getting paid 9.25M/yr is an albatross. The only way I could see them off-loading him is if they retain 50-75% of his contract, which just becomes pointless. He makes more than Draisaitl ffs.
Retaining part of the contract would be fine if they could find someone with a work ethic. It's been done before. Not great, but gotta be better than what they have.@@Enruler
the last time Oilers goalie discussion was not a thing was Rolie the goalie. :(

Honestly, it truly is death by a thousand cuts. McDavid isn't wrong. So many things have piled up at the same time, that it's almost unfathomable and statistically nearly impossible, yet here we are. Now it's all about health and confidence and execution, lol, you know, everything in hockey.
The only solution... find a DeLorean and let Nurse walk.
Why the hell does Darrelle nurse have a contract that high. WHY!!!
They need to get rid of Nurse!! He is no good….. same as Bouchard!!!
@@Emmyjace totally agree
McJesus and Drai deserve better than this.
I really think when we lost Adam Laarson we lost our best defenceman.
My 2¢:
1. Either trade Nurse by agreeing to retain percenge of salary or put him on waivers for purpose of buying out contract and freeing up cap space to sign someone else.
2. Fire the goaltending coach.
3. Start benching people to send them a message. Sather even benched Gretzky, just sayin
4. Trade a couple of the bottom six forwards for future considerations and bring up a couple guys from the Condors. At least they'll be trying to make the team and put in an effort.
5. Leadership group needs to call a players only mtg
6. Scrap the "new defensive system"
7. There is supposed to body contact - stop playing so soft
8. D needs to block some shots
21 Mill for 2 guys is gonna make it tough to have depth.
... Not to forget these overpaid d-men
Draisaitl's defensive work rate was several standard deviations in the negative (my physics major brother's words lmao)
McDavid and Draisaitl are fine. Both projected for 100+ point seasons. Kane, Nugent-Hopkins, and Hyman are looking solid too. The goalies need to bare down, especially Jack. Defence is looking weak too, Ekholm needs to take the lead to turn things around. This is exactly what happened to the Leafs last year.. slow start of the season, especially for Matthews. Oilers will come around and make the playoffs again.
Oilers for the cup, was projected as well. lol
If I were Connor McDavid, I would getting on my teammates cases. He's the Captain and he is trying his best, and the team knows it, so he has to challenge his teammates to match him. Especially the defense.
Life long Oiler fan here....They have faced DeSmith, Wedgewood, Lankinen, Johnny Quick (O.K 37 year old back up Quick, not Vezina Quick)...and whoever Minney and Philly had in net...They are outshooting opponents, with their back up goalie in net....AND STILL LOSING!!!.....THAT is concerning....they have had an incredibly soft schedule up until now. The longest road trip was 2 games!!
...They have had 1--3 days off between all games and have mostly been at home. They are incredibly well rested......AND STILL LOSING!!!....Maybe that's the problem? They need a good old fashioned 3 week road trip and start playing more?
That all said.......They outshot Vancouver 40--16 and lost game 2, They outshot Winnipeg, had 5 consecutive penalties to kill in one period!!1...AND McDavid got injured and could not finish the 3rd period and OT...and the Oilers STILL could have won.....They have hit posts 3 times (Bouchard) in one game and lost by a goal. We have had Drai and Kane miss open nets and lost by one goal....a bounce here and there and this team has at least 5 or 6 Win's and we are not even having this conversation.

Maybe the problem for the Oilers is that they got exposed in the playoffs against the Golden Knights the same way Calgary got exposed against the Oilers.
This sounds most plausible. The entire team still plays like they're still thinking, "my god, that was it. That was our best shot at the Cup and we got DISMANTLED...what now?"
They look utterly disengaged from the game, and Drai/McFraud look absolutely DONE as Oilers. They wanna go elsewhere. They know this team is rapidly approaching a massive teardown and rebuild
How were they exposed? They lost to a better team that's actually built for the playoffs because they have depth that can actually score, and an actual goalie.
The oilers gotta move one of their core players and actually get some solid two way players and defensemen. I don’t even think goaltending is a big issue, it’s the DEFENSE!
I've been saying for almost a decade now that the Oilers need to fire their entire Goalie coaching staff. I have watched normally good goalies come in and just start to suck under the Oilers. Or young goalies that start good, go terrible, and move on to do well under other teams. Dustin Schwartz and his whole staff need to go, or we will just stay in this bad goalie cycle, no matter who we bring in.
Edmonton hasn't had a proper starting goalie since Dwayne Roloson. That was at least 10 years ago for Christ sake.
Ken Holland should be inquiring on what the Sharks would give up for Mackenzie Blackwood or Kaapo?!?
pretty crazy how much their spending on some of these players 9 million for nurse what was campbells like 4 mil? Lightning got COL's backup for 750k and look how good that guys been and even the lightning have defensive issues...

Hey Johnny could you do a video on Dustin Schwartz (Oilers' goaltending coach for the last decade)? Our only good goalie in his tenure was Mike Smith who was 38-40yrs old and had his own personal coach. Even Talbot had a coach in NY during his tenure here.
This is NOT on McDrai, nor on our D at this point.
Hire Mike Smith as the new goalie coach 100%
The Sharks goaltending, which has given up ten goals in two straight games, and lost eleven straight, has a higher save percentage than the Oilers goalies.
Starting after the 1:10 mark: “…depth scoring, defense, and goaltending.“ those aspects are no less lacking with the Leafs as with the Oilers.
yet one of them plays in a much harder conference, much harder division, and has a better record. oh and they didn't get blown out by vancouver. the leafs are far from perfect but the oilers are and have been a horribly built team for years. can't win with only 2 players on your roster.
@@TheKitKatTheThe Leafs aren’t yet in the Eastern Conference where the Oilers are out West. That said, Brad Treliving made a bunch of off-season free-agent acquisitions that I’m sure he had hoped would add some grit to the team, but have done nothing of the sort. John Klingberg, Max Domi, Ryan Reeves and Tyler Bertuzzi have an epic fails, and it appears these Leafs are heading for a lost season barring moving out a bunch of players including, likely, a piece of the AM34-Tavares-Marner-Nylander-Rielly quintet to try to free up cash please to turn this season around or, bar that, aim for a 2025 playoff run.
Honestly an .873 save percentage for Campbell is FAR from unacceptable when you consider the Oilers D. He is definitely not playing well, don't get me wrong, but what else can be expected when the Oilers are constantly in their own zone and giving up quality chances. Even someone like Sorokin hasn't been able to bail out his teams bad defense.
I’m so glad the Wings got rid of Holland and brought Stevie Y back. I’m sorry Oilers, he isn’t going to fix it.
Yup I think Hollands days of magic are over.
He inherited a brutal setup by Chir.

So, on the trade market, Kahkonen or Blackwood from Sharks? They seem to do pretty decent on a firetire team so should be an upgrade.. Skinner or Campbell and a pick/prospect for one of those goalies?
Too late to grab Ana goalie. He's been crushing it.
Two goalies that think the other guy will pull out the win to get out of the slump, not happening soon, Campbell or Skipper one of them needs to become the regular starter regardless of how they play.
You read my mind, man. Great video, again.
McDavid has not looked like himself since the season started. Neither has Draisitl. You can’t win without a legit goalie or a GM that believes you have to significantly overpay to entice players to sign. That’s why you can’t afford a goalie.
Draisaitl hasn’t looked right since his lower body injury in the playoffs. He’s still putting up top tier points but he just isn’t deadly from the right hash mark like he used to be. Something is up. As an oilers fan, I watch these games close every night, the goalies are being left out to dry, it’s hardly their fault. I don’t know what is wrong with Ekholm, but he’s a shadow of his former self. Desharnais has been getting more minutes and I think they are actually deserved, he’s cleaned his game up a lot. Bouchard isn’t shooting enough, and Nurse is the biggest waste of money in the NHL, period. And I’m getting tired of saying that. Sorry Connor, I know you’re friends, but it’s true.
Vancouver has so much schadenfreude rn it’s ridiculous. Sure fire your coach because you can’t trade the team. But what really needs to happen is TRADE THE TEAM…this includes Connie…don’t get me started on Calgary and that hot mess
If the Oilers want to try to improve their goaltending, FIRE THE GOALIE COACH. Dustin Schwartz has been the goalie coach going on 10 seasons now. What has been this team's biggest Achilles heel during that time? The goaltending. And he has been the common denominator. There's a reason that goalies that leave Edmonton tend to play better, and goalies that come to Edmonton play worse. And that's on top of the poor defensive play in front of them. This is something that should have been corrected years ago.
When I was a young one Edmonton was a monster and they had great goalies for a long time. Fuhr, Ranford, Moog, all were great. They'll get there again. Maybe they can get someone who is a break-out backup who wants the starting goalie spot. That's who they can go after!
As a canucks fan, I see this as an absolute win
Don’t worry your wheels will fall off soon. They always do in Vancouver
I approve of this message.
@@Ruttsintheroadthe wheels have already fallen off in Edmonton. Go nucks!
@@RuttsintheroadIf you look back at the record since Tocchet took over they have been on a steady upward arch. There is accountability there now, something thatvis lacking in Edmonton. And while the Oilers and Canucks have known defence was the problem its the Canucks that actually did something about it.
@@RuttsintheroadThe $168 million dollar wheels have already fallen off for that overrated shipwreck of a team! These were the guys who were supposed to win the cup this year?🤣😂🤣😂💙🧡🤡🤡🤡🤡
They could have a Vesna caliber goalie in there and it wouldn't make a difference. They need to fix the turnovers abs odd man rushes
They need to completely rework their "system." It's the same bag if tricks they always use, and the league has wised up to it. Long stretch pass from our D zone every time.
Coaching, management, goal tending, defence all suck right now. This is hard to take.
I’m not even mad I’ve already excepted they won’t make playoffs. What I am mad about is the oilers making this big statement that it was cup or bust and showed they were ready by practicing a whole week and a half early and they come out and play like this. No emotion no push back no fight. Like if you really wanted to win you would you play like it is game 7 of a Stanley Cup finals. That’s what I’m mad about the players performance not the playoffs.
If only the Oilers could play the sharks every game.
'there is something on the inside' is a hot take. It reminds me of the Canucks last year - good Team on Paper and in the previous season but Bad outcome
Reminder: McDavid and Draisaitl had 40 points in the first 20 games last year EACH
the canucks were without their top goalie last season for most of the year we had a backup and they came close to being in the playoffs once Tocchet turned the team around
People like to dog on Smith but he provided adequate-to-above average goaltending during his time in edmonton .. in three regular seasons his record was 56-27-10 he had save percentages of .902 /.923/.915 and GAAs of 2.95/2.31/2.81 .. those stats were plenty for this team to be competitive.. say what you want about his playoff numbers in edmonton, they could have been better and there were a handful of games across 3 seasons that you could say they would have won if he had played to his baseline or not given up a few bad goals.. but they did not lose any series because of bad goaltending alone.
Not necessarily defending Campbell or Skinner but this problem has extended well beyond them. Talbot is a great example...the longer he stayed in Edmonton the worse he got and then suddenly rebounded after leaving. When the list of 'failed goalies' spans over a decade and more than a dozen names one has to start wondering if subpar goaltending is the outcome and not the root cause.
Just last summmer i was getting roasted saying demko was better than both goalies in edmonton. 😂
And now you have the last laugh over the delusional lemming who stupidly believed otherwise
McDavid is sub 100% and the team has no 5on5 play left. Says a lot.
100% the goaltending. Been saying that for a while. I was not happy when they signed Jack Campbell and he is proving me right . Again. Wish I was wrong. Nurse is not very good either, but man, every team needs a good goalie to win. No exception. Teams gain confidence from their goalie too. How can you be confident with 800 save averages
As much as I find it hilarious to watch the Alberta meltdown, I know for a fact that Campbell's problems have not been entirely his own doing. This is largely a problem of desensive structure. We saw it last season in Tampa with an exhausted Vasilevskiy getting exposed and letting in goals he otherwise would stop because the defense wasn't there to support him. It doesn't matter how good your goalie is, if you leave him out to dry you're going to end up getting burned.
Darnell Nurse is a 5th. line winger at BEST !!!!!! Unless on all 4 most of the time , now he is wrestling players in the crease. Holland I hear your family calling = " I am leaving the Oilers to spend more time with my Family " !!!!!!
The oilers goalies have a lower save percentage than the sharks goalies. Let that sink in...
I'm a bit worried but not panicking just yet. It's probably long past time to replace Dustin Schwartz because if the team had league-average goaltending, their record would be above .500 right now. Connor's recovering from an oblique and that takes time. Something's wrong with Leon's passing, but I'm optimistic that he'll get back to form. It seems that the Connor Brown signing was too rich and will hurt the team next season without much benefit this season.
Every Edmonton goalie plays good once they leave the team lol
Look at what Dubnyk did in Minnesota. He was great despite the team in front of him being mediocre at best.
@@grahamdamberger7130 Edmonton DESTROYED Dubnyk by refusing to adjust their System to prevent blueline freeflys. A non-contact blueline meant everyone just stepped in and fired it long range squared up dead middle ice catching Dubnyk and Talbot and others bar-down in Transition. That playaction was built and scripted for the Oilers opponents to sink Dubnyk and the Oilers, they could not respond without big changes. The idea was to force the Oilers to go to a Standup Blueline...it did not work....lol..lol..lol....Schwartz was brought in to counter what sunk Dubnyk and others and he has failed completely .
How is it possible that Darnell Nurse is making MORE than Cale Makar???
Makar has a cup… at least whereas Dumpnell is collecting that paycheque and bankrupting the LOLers by paying for a useless pylon who does nothing😂🤣😂🤣😂💙🧡🛢️🤡🤡🤡
As a Flames fan, when the Oilers are struggling, don't ever interrupt them.
How rude of you to interupt them at the Outdoor Classic Calgary....hahaha....Hey, two 5 on 3's in the first period. You got to admit we were generous host's.
Same as a Canucks fan.😇
You guys are just as bad 😂
@blakecramer1738 except the Flames didnt go into the season being called cup contenders and have two of the best players in the league. 🤡
There’s only one consistent problem for the last 10 years and that has been the goalie coach. When will we consider a change there when it’s obvious that this is a problem that has gone on over many goalies over many years. Also, it’s very reasonable to assume it’s the goalie coach in this context, because goalies come to Edmonton and get worse consistently. I’m surprised you didn’t mention him
Nurse make more then Makar. FML..
The cross crease passes Edmonton gives up, it was their pk. That's not gonna work, what I will say is that the 3 coaches in Vancouver would be livid. Stingy defense wins a lot of games. I like the Oilers but there's problems. I don't know if playing with Conner / Leon is a curse or blessing. It doesn't matter who's in net Edmonton's defense is utterly incompetent. That's all 5 skaters. Inexcusable.
This has been a issue for many many years. Ive finally gave up on the team
Holland built this team, so he should be the one to go down because of it.
Honestly, their defence is tragic. So they are leaving goalies out to dry.
You can’t blame the goaltending when the defence doesn’t show up. Great goalies like Vasy and Shesterkin are great because they have a defence that makes it so that they know what to expect, unlike Edmonton who makes Campbell deal with 4 cross crease passes and 2on1s per game.
I wonder if jesper wallstedt is available…..
Last good Goalie the Oilers has was Dwayne Roloson. He could steal a game for them. The last really good one they had was Cujo and that was the late 90's. Almost 20 years really since Edmonton had a rock in net.
The underlying numbers say it's the goaltending. The Oilers have actually been great at limiting high danger chances against but they're dead last in save % against.
Maybe yet another first overall pick would help???
When they announced a couple years ago they signed Campbell i was super disappointed. In Toronto when he was good he was good, when he was bad he was terrible. Never has been consistent enough. They need to deal Campbell and find something else and theyll be better off bringing a d man up from the organization and letting Nurse go to free up cap space to spend the cash on a real goalie
