This was Huby's weakness for the first few years in Florida. He would pass the puck 90% of the time rather than take the shot. Jagr was credited with fixing that during his time with him and Huby became very confident in his game. That confidence seems to be lost at the moment. "Florida completely finessed Calgary on this trade. Traded away one Johnny Gaudreau and got back another (minus the playoff scoring) while losing their best player, scorer, agitator - i.e. their playoff man - I want some of whatever they're smoking up there." - Me, September 12th, 2022.
I called this a month before the season even started. Huberdeau disappeared against the Lightning because they actually checked him and the rest of the league was watching, there was no way that coaches weren't going figure out how to shut him down this year. A pure finesse player can be checked into oblivion, but a grinder with skill like Tkachuk will always find a way to score.

As a Flames fan, I always liked Tkachuk's skill, but his shitty skating, the giveaway's, the selfishness, and all the other stupid crap he'd pull during and after the play (like poking Jonathan Quick through his goal mask), those are the things I don't miss. Remember, he went to a team whose MO is offense from a Sutter type team, and Huberdeau went from an offensive team to Sutter's team, so Hubie's points will obviously suffer. How did Tkachuk get all those points in Calgary then? Sutter cut his ice time back until he would play on the right side of the puck, and he happened to click with Gaudreau and Lindholm. Notice Tkachuk is only a +16 with 71 pts this year, while last year the three of them were probably around +35 when they reached that point total.
They had no choice but to trade him, and they got what they got, but I just want people to realize that points aren't everything.
Having said that, it'd be nice if the Flames could actually score(which if we still had Tkachuk, he would help in that area), and not lose to teams like Chicago(twice), and Detroit (tonight). That and not being able to win in OT is likely going to cost them a shot at the playoffs this year

@NaPo7 Weegar had a bad series vs. Tampa. I think they exposed his weaknesses. You can get by in the regular season when you're playing as many bad teams as good teams, but in the playoffs, when you're playing a good team every night, and the same good team in a series of games over 2 weeks, they can pick your game apart. That's what the Lightnings did with Weegar. Florida knew he was going to demand a big ticket as a UFA, and they knew they didn't want to pay it.

I think people overlooked the pressure a star takes from playing in a Canadian market. Huberdeau played in Florida his whole NHL career and the pressure is low there, the state cares more about football than hockey. But I’m the game against Detroit, ‘someone had to step up!’
    Well, someone did.
Funny story. I’m currently second in a hockey pool. It was an online draft, and I was a little late, arriving in the middle of the first round, where I found out my first pick was Conner McDavid. Not bad for first overall.
I took Ottenger and Freddie Anderson with my next two (double pick)
    Later, I grabbed Ville Husso.
First night Anderson and Ottenger each get one goal wins, and the second night, Husso pitches a shutout.
    Someone had to step up.
Maybe Husso will flame out Kate in the season, but Detroit’s right up there WITH Buffalo and trying to sneak into the playoffs BECAUSE Husso’s been stepping up during the season!
He’s got a career leading three shutouts this season!!!

The team has only put in a handful of full game efforts and is one of the worst 3rd period teams in the league.
They'd be in a playoff spot if Markstrom was right in the head but they're not playing well for more than a period or two most games.

As a Flames fan, I wasn't thinking of Huberdeau as a replacement for Tkachuk, but for Gaudreau. No one is going to replace Tkachuk (except maybe his brother) because his combination of skills is unique. But even Gaudreau is far outstripping Huberdeau while playing for a terrible team. Johnny is still going to get about 80 points this year, playing mostly with AHL guys. I'd be worried about Huberdeau, but wouldn't panic until he puts up another season like this one next year. Then you're in Alexi Yashin with the Islanders territory, both in performance and with that contract.

The truth is that there's a reason that the trade was not 1-for-1. CGY also got Weegar PLUS a 1st rd pick PLUS a prospect. Besides, Huberdeau was supposed to fill the playmaker role of Gaudreau and Kadri the play-on-the-edge scoring winger of Tkachuk. That said, his contract was bound to be an albatross like Zach Parise's $ 98 million Minnesota contract.
It's easy to hit a guy when he's down, but with some patience, he will be better later in the season, and in future seasons. Like they say, "you're never as good or as bad as the headlines say you are". Just look at Karlsson down in San Jose. They said he was all washed up.

I feel like the panthers played more of a conservative style and flames are more energetic...also I think alot of pressure is on him (new club), chemistry not clicking, and yeah new conference new division new coach.... they need to sell high on their defenders now, and I would look into trading Coleman and toffoli and have younger guys get a chance... could use markstrom in a big trade to get a top 6 winger that scores.

Tkachuk is the full package as a player and he also put up over 100 points while scoring more goals than Huberdeau, playing more physical than Huberdeau, and playing better defensive than Huberdeau so not only was Tkachuk younger but he was also better.. Huberdeau should start turning it around eventually, I've seen a lot of players struggle in their first year on a new team

I have no idea what you really expect cause most NHL stars dont produce like Crosby/Malkin/Macar or Kane. Observe your average top NHL top 25 or so, they produce by intervals within each season, and by up/down waves from season to season. Except Crosby or similar player who can produce 90 pts each season for many years, most decent to very good players cannot do that.
Also, you people, you hockey fans, there is no give him time, or give it time: There are ways to divide NHL players with those who produce high points year round, those who produce in big up/down waves, those who produce 50-60 pts season, then peak a 100 pts, than decline, and I could go on. There is really a division or sectors of ways to divide NHL players by observing their seasons and their year round productions.
Last but not least: Our local ex NHL now radio animator, Maxime Lapierre, spoke about NHL guys who sign up with a new team, and stop producing, cause the passion is simply gone, and with the new contract, they arent hungry anymore.

i feel like marner and hube are very similar in attitude, when they shoot the puck they can drive points up the board like its nothing, but once they stop shooting they become a predictable and one dimensional threat. When they have confidence in their game, they shoot enough, and when they shoot it allows their playmaking ability to thrive because they pull the defenders to them. the elite players can do multiple things that makes them unpredictable with ovechkin being the most one dimensional offence in my opinion (even though hes a much more physical player than most goal scorers). If hube can find his shot, like marner just did this past year, they will get a lot better!

I think you’re blowing this out of proportion Calgary is not the team Florida was last year and Hubie no matter how you see it is a player used to having another player like barkov for example that can help out is 10.5 too much for a guy that can’t drive the offence himself? Probably but the guy was plucked out of his perfect situation and plopped in Calgary where all their stars left or got traded basically outside of their “star” goalie who’s looked far from a star so far this year. Every star has a player that makes them better Ovi has had a elite passer through his career Crosby has Malkin, McDavid has Draisaitl I’d imagine there’s examples in previous eras as well that I don’t quite know off the top of my head but the chemistry those players have (same chemistry I imagine Hubie had with Barkov) can’t just be taken and replicated with new players right away and can imagine it’s okay to assume it could take multiple years especially when said players are nothing like what he’s used to playing with.
