The Edmonton Oilers lost 3-2 to the San Jose Sharks last night in the NHL "Toilet Bowl". We take a look at how San Jose pulled off the win & why the psyche of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the rest of the Oiler team are a mess.

Crazy contrast from last year... last year, the word around McDavid was "Leon told me I should shoot more, so I've been working on my shot" and he absolutely tore up the league to win the Rocket and the Hart. This year the word is "cup or bust" and the best player in the world is being outscored by third liners in Winnipeg.

IMO the worst part of this situation is that they're not even the "lovable loser" due to fan and media expectation. There is so much ground that needs to be made up in their play and record before they can be given even the most modest of praise. What's going to fix it? One week of solid performances? A month of a nearly spotless record? They're going to have to take it one game at a time, but nobody is going to be giving them any props for winning a singular game in isolation.

@1:56 There was talk about puck watching by Draisaital. Interesting observation. Now, may I ask, isn't it the job of those giant D men to stand in front and watch for this play. Rather than a backchecking forward chasing the play? I do not understand the system being used.

It basically boils down to one thing. The sharks have an excuse and an incentive to be bad (ie:better draft lottery odds) and the oilers are a team trying to win. That’s the difference. The oilers are tied with a team that is literally trying to lose.

I think it’s mostly just mcdavid and draisaitl not performing. Their goaltending is a bit worse but their defense and goaltending was bad last year too. They basically would win because Connor and Leon would score enough to make up for the negatives. Not sure what’s wrong with mcdavid but I hope he figures it out

With the right GM making the right moves they can absolutely win a cup. As a Pens fan I can remember just how hopeless that 2010-2015 stretch felt.
That Nurse contract is killing them and it is only going to be felt even more with Draisaitl due for a big raise soon. They have to move him, even if it means having to retain a bit of money, it must happen imo.

Why the fuck wouldn't you start Pickard against the worst team to initiate him? Get him baptized and build his confidence.
I love woodcroft but I feel his allegiance to Skinner has hurt. That paired with Campbell being bad, its all around a shit situation. Yes D is bad, yes Depth scoring is bad. But the goaltending is the main issue/

I have been ssaying this for years that when a single team basically relies on two generational talents for all their offensive production, it leads them into a bad spot. Edmonton has not made it to a cup final because of this, and they are in the position they are now because of this. Mcdavid and Drasaitl need to move teams if they want to win a cup but that won't happen because a team would have to give up half their player salary to get either one of them

I honestly never understood the Oilers hype going into this season. Their team practically got no changes and their goalie issue still plagued them since Talbot regressed. Their team last year was overly reliant on the PP and struggled in all aspects outside of it. Outside of the 5 PP guys, you could not name another player on that team and their best d-man is fucking Darnell Nurse. What part of this team did the media think was a contending team?

I think this can be a great opportunity for the oilers. They need to respond, someone in that locker room needs to stand up and call everyone out and lead them to playing better. If they can learn how to work through this and get back to winning ways they will be unstoppable.
Question is what is it going to take? Is it a new coach, do the goalies need to grow a pair and make the tough saves, or does Mcdavid have to start playing a solid two way game giving hits blocking shots and fighting to get this team going? Thats the question they need to figure out.
