"Picture the scene. You are in the offices of Warner Brothers in Los Angeles, pitching a movie about the siege of Troy to various sharp-suited executives. Perhaps Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt are present also, representing their company, Plan B Films. "OK," you say, "it's a rip-roaring sand-and-sandal, thigh-and-pectoral epic." Approving nods all round. "I see Brad as very much the hero, as Achilles, the glorious warrior who defeats everyone in battle. But it's not just about war; it's about love!" More nods. "The passionate love that goes to the centre of the ancient Greek world, the love that sparks his greatest contest. The love of Achilles - for his friend Patroclus! And I've got a great casting idea: Orlando Bloom is Patroclus. He's Achilles's companion, his comrade, his brother-in-arms, and also let's face it his - acgh." At this moment, at a discreet signal from Mr Pitt, a security guard has entered to grasp you by the throat. Cut to: Warner Brothers exterior. You are flung bodily out into the street to a shout of: "And stay out."

How Ironic... so many main characters die throughout the movie... yet Sean Bean is the one to live.
+Marcos Tijerina lmao'ed to this harder than i should ve :P

haha truly ... that was the comment of the year...freaking Sean Bean
+Marcos Tijerina dude you tuined the movie for me .....
+Marcos Tijerina It's especially strange because Sean Bean usually has a "Death Clause" in all of his contracts which guarantee a gruesome or awesome death scene.
I'm still disregarding this movie for their depiction of Achilles and Patroclus. This infamous bond that inspired so many philosophers and great warriors deserve more recognition.
Weren't they lovers or something?
@@LazyCreepypasta literally
@@LazyCreepypasta No, this is something that was read into the Iliad by later authors (such as Plato but denied by Ksenophon). Achilles lovers, all women, were Penthesilea ( a warrior woman), Briseis, and Deidamia who is the mother of his son.
Why would anyone want to see that?

This is one of the most powerful movie lines I’ve ever heard...
“If I let you walk out of here, if I let you take him, it doesn’t change anything, you are still my enemy in the morning.” The King’s reply...“you’re still my enemy tonight, but even enemies can show respect!” 🔥🔥🔥
@Fernando Dumas the 2000s are infamous for having movies with great stories to tell but were not necessarily well done. Expensive at the time I would imagine.

My origin is troyan . I know full history of Dardans and arwanits. 2 big empires of that time.
Craziest part about this movie, I CAN'T TELL WHO ARE THE GOOD GUYS AND THE BAD GUYS!
that is the point, there is good and evil in both sides
there is good and evil in every war ever fought. In this particular movie the greeks have some really bad people for leaders and troy has started the war to begin with.
Yrp
@blingabi aino
Actually this is loosely based in Homers's Iliad. There are no good or bad sides, in the poem the Olympiad gods take both sides and both Greeks and Trojans have heroes and villains. The main protagonist Achilles and Hector are both portrayed as heroes and villains at different parts of the poem and they are both favored by major gods. So the OP is right to be confused as to who the good guys and bad guys are because there aren't supposed to be any, it's a classic tragedy about two great nations that destroy each other over pride and folly when they should be united as brothers.

Pitt is perfect in tis movie.
Despite the history in this movie being somewhat inaccurate, I freaking LOVED watching it!!!!! Achilles is one of my favorite Greek mythology heroes, and Pitt portrayed him well!!
How is this being inaccurate when it is not even history to begin with? It is a myth, or a tale about what happened 3000 years ago in an account by an obscure orator called Homer who might or might not even exist.
They forgot Diomedes.
Note 1
@@feihongwong1643 way to jump on the "this historical individual was very influential, he probably didnt exist though because saying that makes me sound smart" wagon. gotta stay hip right? oh and also, theyve been digging up a massive city for the last century that can only be troy as well as a palace on ithaca.
@@feihongwong1643 Denying history doesn't make you cool.
@@tyj9175 Yes troy was a city, most likely, but so? that doesn't mean this is accurate. It isn't even close to accurate just going off Homer. Also, just because a historical figure was influential, doesn't mean they are real! Fei Hong Wong was correct.
This movie is so god-awfully inaccurate its kinda painful tbh. The Trojan war was allegedly around 1200BCE, and yeah it may have happened, there is evidence of casualties and broken arrowheads at Hisarlik (archaeological site of troy), Troy VIh/i or VIIa, which was around 1200 give or take a generation. However, Ancient Greece wasn't even a thing until four centuries later! Ancient Greece as we know it, the Hellenes, was founded around the 8th Century BCE. Athens itself wasn't founded until 500BCE. Yeah no only 700 centuries out, that's definitely accurate.
It wasn't the Greeks who attacked Troy, which was known as Wilusa to its occupants, it was the Ahhiyawans, who are believed to be the Achawoi that Homer mentions (he doesn't call the attacking party "Greek" anywhere, so the movie is wrong even by Homer's standards, low as they may be). The Achawoi were the pre-Hellenistic civilisation living in what we call Greece - the Mycenaean Greeks. NOT ancient greek. Different people. The Mycenaeans were the predecessors of Ancient Greece. Wilusa was Hittite or Arzawa, not Greek for those people who claim the Trojans were greek. There are letters providing evidence of reoccurring conflict between the Hittites and Ahhiyawans based in Wilusa, so it is possible there was a "Trojan War" but it was most certainly not a 10-year siege, but possibly a series of small conflicts over the span of a century. I'd recommend looking up Manfred Korfmann if you're interested in more detail!
Also even if you claim this movie is based on the Iliad, there's no trojan horse in the Iliad. That was from Virgil's Aeneid I think. Or maybe it was mentioned briefly in the Odyssey. Either way, it's not in the Iliad, because the Iliad doesn't describe the ending of the war.
Basically, don't be pretentious, and this movie is inaccurate.
The song of Achilles brings me here🥲

One of the most underrated movies of all time
Despite being only rated 54% approval, Troy is my mumber one favorite movie. I used to wish Brad Pitt and Rose Byrne worked on other projects. Their romance was one of the reasons why this movie is such a masterpiece. Doing a remake of this is just impossible.
It's hardly the definitive version. The movie itself is a remake of Helen of Troy from the 1950s. The movie had its flaws and takes some huge liberties with the source material. There will be other versions, it's not Casablanca.
Hector is my favrt! But he died in a way he wasn't meant to :(
Agreed😔 ive cried everytime ive watched that scene😪
It's one of those type of movies where it gets better every time you see it (especially if you like Greek Mythology), like The Ten Commandments...which, interestingly, takes place around the same time
+Jay P For one, the various characters' storylines, and the sheer epicness of Troy's fall
***** Yeah I also liked that it showed the story in a real-world tone, where the pagan gods do not exist (but very lightly implied where God Itself may have influenced various character's backstories, like Hector's healing and such) and where the Tojan War played out on its own, with its characters coming to life. And yeah, the priestess was more beautiful than Helen.
***** Other than Clash of the Titans, The Argonauts and all that....hmm, 300
***** God of War series is number 1 in Greek Mythology if you ask me
***** Your facination for Greek Mythology never led you to God of War (you're at least aware of the 90s cult series, Hercules & Xena, right)? :o It's not too late for you lol

This movie probably has the best dual ever by a period piece via ancient weaponry, when Hector and Achilles went head to head. Sickest fight ever, well, by Achilles anyway. Best dual by sword of any movie in my opinion.

Also at minute 1:00 the Greek Army is pretty tiny. That gives you a sense of how few soldiers in the finished film are real life actors, versus how many are CGI.

This is one of my favorite screen versions of Homer's "The Iliad" with elements of Virgil's "Aeneid". Even though it omits a lot of events, characters plus the Olympians- the film is nonetheless a fairly accurate version of the epic poems. It really presents the Trojan War in a more realistic sense as opposed to legend. The cast was outstanding! A screen version of "The Aeneid" should definitely be done too!
It's a pretty useful film for students who are confused or otherwise daunted by the length of Homer's poem.
Navid Haider I agree with you. For first time readers of Homer, this film is a helpful resource in understanding what lead up to the war, who the key characters are and human nature itself.
***** Definitely. I heard they're making a new adaptation of The Odyssey with Hugh Jackman in the eponymous role? That'd be pretty exiting as well! It's strange though, film adaptations should never be a complete alternative to reading the text -- not only do films change it for very practical reasons, but they also make it a lot more dramatic than they are in the novels or poems. Not saying that it makes them bad adaptations, but its just a completely different medium and it shows once you start being critical about both versions.
Navid Haider That will be an interesting film to see. One of the beauties about great epic legends like "The Iliad & Odyssey" is that you have a freedom to re-tell them for a contemporary audience. Personally, I still believe in doing as much justice to the source material but make it as resonant to a modern audience (I am a writer myself). Does not mean people cannot enjoy the original story and a screen adaptation of it.
***** I have so much to ask you if you're also a writer :D And yes, all of that sounds about right -- I do think that films and screen adaptations are able to dramatise any story (or myth) in a way that prose cannot. Merely because of the additional technical advantages alone. I was re-reading Tolkien and kept thinking why Peter Jackson changed / added so many different scenes and yet managed to make his trilogy so... beautiful! I like that you used the term "doing as much justice to" in reference to a source material, because honestly adaptations really feel like translations or interpretations -- even the once with a strong fidelity to the material. I keep thinking of how people love Zack Snyder for what he's done for the comics-to-film genre, but even he has had to make a lot of significant changes to those source-materials.
But I digress -- here's wishing you a happy 2017! :)
Underrated movie
Came here after reading Song of Achilles
Great movie. Very well done given the complex but fascinating details of the Trojan War. Epic fight scenese in this movie. It's interesting that a tale written over 2,000 years ago still fascinates people today. I guess because it deals in very human issues such as love, war, vengeance, jealousy, etc. I recently learned there were several epic poems written about the Trojan War not just the Illiad & the Odyssey, its just that we don't have the complete poems. In the other tales, there were descriptions of battles involving Amazons and Africans who fought on the Trojan side against the Greeks.
Probably one of the greatest movie ever made This one's my favourite. I never get bored watching it again and again. Wolfgang Petersen truly left a masterpiece for all of us. Each and every character have nailed their performance. My favourite is "Achilles" played by Brad Pitt. His action scenes are just perfect to describe the greatest warrior of all times. Followed by Hector who as a great King and a loving elder brother. Favorite movie quote " Any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again." - Achilles
I can't see how it's one of the greatest movies ever made, even the cast have bashed it.
"I had to do Troy because [...] I pulled out of another movie and then had to do something for the studio. So I was put in Troy. The showdown between Achilles and Hector, brilliantly portrayed by Eric Bana, evoked intense emotions, leaving me with goosebumps. Kudos to the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work.
