AWESOME VIDEO!!!!! this is exactly what i have been looking for! I have 3 R610 servers running the SAS6IR card on raid 1 on all 3 machines. this video has answered all my questions on wanting to up grade to more drives with bigger capacities. Thank you again for making this video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Roll Call Tech Thank you again for the video. I've upgraded all my R610 to the H700 with 1 gig on card and it works great! Now time to upgrade my power vault 3300i
Great video. Struggling to figure out cable. My backplane has the same wide sas connector that the perc 6i had on it. Where can I get the cables for the sas connector on H700 and wide connector on backplane end?
I have a Poweredge R410 (Yeah, I know different server) with PERC 6/i with 4 300 gig SAS drives. But I want to eventually add an external drive array. Do you have any suggestions on what controller to use and what drive array to use? Also, do you think there will be enough room to install another controller while keeping the PERC 6/i installed? Thank you for your help.
Good stuff. I would be sure to go to Dell’s site and upgrade the firmware for the controller and any registered drives you have running on The RAID. I updated the firmware for the registered Dell drives and haven’t hit a snag since. But for a minute I was guessing bad controller or failing drive. Firmware update for the drive fixed it. Dell is making room to support the new line of servers on the support site. I think Gen 11 and back are slowly being removed.
Awesome video. Any idea where can I purchase the controller, battery and SAS cables for the R610:? I have some spare R510's and took one out of it, but the cables and battery cable are too short.
dude do you have any idea H700 can take 8TB hdd after firmware update? My dell T610 can't take over 2tb but I read some blog, some people confirmed h700 can take 6tb but some other said they were able to update to the latest firmware to work with 8tb. Is there a way for you to confirm?
I have an H700 RAID controller in my workstation, but I'm looking to get an R710 to offload my RAID and VM setup. R710's with PERC 6/i are cheaper. What cable will I need to buy for the upgrade? Do SATA HDDs plug right into SAS ports with no prob?
I'm running esxi 5.5 with this exact configuration, R610 with H700 however the firmware is out of date on h700, I was wondering if you had any pointers for upgrading the firmware to at least 12.10.5-0001
I haven't upgraded the firmware with ESXI on that before, but Dell has bootable ISO's that check and update the firmware before the OS boots. www.dell.com/Support/Article/us/en/04/SLN296511
Hey man appreciate the vid to help me with my server purchase options. However I have come to a conundrum. Is it better to buy the dell approved ssd or will third party option be alright? Some of Dells stuff can be pretty pricey and they of course suggest that I get the dell SATA or SAS but what do you use and how does it work?
we use 100% third party... best brands so far - sandisk (for cost) and samsung PRO 850 for performance. we never buy the dell SSD's. we have only had 1 or 2 ssd drives fail in 100's purchased and installed. i came here to see this video because we need to do this same upgrade with sandisk ssd's cheers.
@@BluffCreekStudio ugh have you ran into any issues so far with updating the firmware? So far with the H700 installed in we can't even get past POST and into the BIOS, a real world of pain. I saw somewhere that you can update the firmware with a bootable USB and just configure the boot order but I haven't found the proper .bat file to download only .bin and .exe updates.

Hello sir. I use del poweredge r710 and i have search that it's maximal disk drive that could handle is 2TB I'm planning to upgrade it with detail for 10TB RAID 1 Is changing the controller solve my problem? For the answer, thanks before.
J Williams yes, the h700 is compatible from what I’ve read... but just make sure the firmware is up to date on the the perc 6 before swapping to the h700 and update the firmware for the h700 as well.
yes, perc 6 only runs at 3gpbs... and caps out at 2TB hard drives, h700 runs at 6gbps and can handle larger drives. so my 300gb 6gbps SAS drives weren't running at their full potential, now there is a noticeable difference.
Why not raid 10 all 6 drives together... better speed... I know old school keep it all separate but still... much faster than raid 1 and still redundant...
correction (just watched my video again lol), at the time of the vid... i had the 6 146gb drives, still wanted to keep em separate.. I now have it setup from my previous comment.
Roll Call Tech thank you for the video by the way just putting a few r610 and r710 into a few small business and wanted to up the speed a bit. An H700 is a solid and relatively inexpensive way to keep drive intensive applications happy and your video confirmed it for me :) Have a great day and thanks again!!
Thanks a bunch, man, you saved me a lot of headache while planning an upgrade!

It holds the previous Arai from the 6i controller? Can i change the controller without losing any data or configuration??
so you can't reuse the old cables? I'm about to order some parts, seems like i need to get new cables too?

I haven't looked in a r710 recently, sas cables and possibly a new battery should be all you need. Yes, sata hdd's work just fine in sas ports.
this raid runs off of sas? or sata 1 or 2? If we run sas do we need special ssd drives?
Just wanted to thank you very much for this. Where both cables the same length?
no, one is longer than the other

If your max for the R710 is 2TB per drive, then yes, you have a SAS 6 I/r HBA. Upgrading to a PERC6, H200, or H700 will allow you to expand hat.
Worked for me i have a 12TB raid 10
@@CoryDobak Will H700 work out of the box in an R710, or are drivers required..thanks
did you had to0 reinstall windows after swapping card? i did this and my window only boot on safemode? and i really dont wanna do a fresh install
No, after the new card was installed it picked up my previous array and worked like a charm...
Can the H700 also fit in the Dell R710? Also, can a more moden video card be installed so it can have DisplayPorts? Thank you

J Williams as for video cards, I don’t know on that one... not too many cards can fit in a 2u case
Where to get the cable?
What is it with the cables? Which one do I need? Do I need to replace the backplane?
Youri no need to replace the backplane, only cables that are need are the two cables that run to backplane a and b... then the battery
Thanks!

Yes i did it to my R710
why cant you use the 6i cable for the h700
John Smith they are different size connectors at the raid card side
I have found the answer if anyone elese is wondering. Its simple because they are different physical cables.
John Smith I thought I answered your question
