    These are great servers I have been buying refurbed Dell servers for over a decade. only recommendation I can give to anyone wanting to do this is to keep the servers in a room that people do not go in often. humans generate alot of dust and these servers are like vaccuum's. if you have the space get an enclosed rack and put the server in a high slot so the heat will create an air channel that pulls cool are in the bottom and exits the top of the rack. this will limit the amount of dust that gets to the server.

    Thank you for an interesting video. The dual X5675 is not an underachiever in any way. It is dependable, and powerful for all the functions you want them for.

      Both the nvme, and the gt 1030 are brilliant choices.

    Cool. A few months ago I got a Dell R810. It has full 16x slots, so no modifying required and the slots support the full 75W standard, so I currently have a 1050 Ti in it. I would like to eventually put 3 Quadro P2000's in it though. But I am now reconsidering getting a nvme ssd like you did, and just have 2 gpu's. I had no idea there was a workaround for the lack of support for booting from a ssd in a pcie slot.

    Awesome video. I didn't realize I could throw SATA in this server, but it makes sense given the similarities. SAS is so dang expensive new.

    After trying to decide whether to get the R510, R610, or R710 I finally decided to finally go with the R610. It doesn't have the same amount of drive space, but for the price it still seemed pretty solid. A lot of other similar videos also seemed to praise the R610. So I'm pretty excited to finally get my own homelab setup.

      I bought an r710 on ebay for 67$ shipped. But its terrible compared to my Dell r620 for the main reason that the 20 series (620, 720) use Intel Xeon E5-2600 v1 and v2 cpus 4 cores up to 12 cores, and the 10 series servers use x5500 and x5600 cpus which are 4 core and 6 core. So if you were to buy something go with an r620 or r720

    The GT 1030 is a decent card. I use it for common esports and MMO titles like HOTS, WoW, and Star Trek Online and it's more than enough for that. I have that card in a 2010-era Lenovo Thinkstation S20 with a Xeon E5530.

    It is overkill and like your setup. Good job. You should try Proxmox VE linux distro for virtualisation with it, if you are not using it as a desktop pc anymore.

      I actually got a newer server (R620) that I am running Proxmox on. I have been meaning to make a followup video.

      @@MichaelODonnell sorry for the question, but I need to know if the socket size on this servers are standard? I'm thinking of modding the top case of mine to allow dual tower cooler to be installed, but I do not know if the socket screws to the backplate are standard size to install a third party cooler... Can you help? Thanks!

    You have 96GB of RAM but your OS is 32bit and it is using only 3706MB. My suggestion is to install the 64bit version to take advantage of the whole amount of memory you have .

    • @MichaelODonnell
      @MichaelODonnell  3 роки тому +2

      It's a 64-bit OS. You can see that it addessed all the RAM, otherwise, it would only show up as 3-4 gigs. That 3706MB you are seeing is what is actually being used at the moment, not what it can see in total

    Are your laptop drives formatted for 520 bytes or 512? I bought 2 lots of 10 enterprise sas drives that are proprietary and formatted to 520 bytes. For them to work on other systems I have to format them to 512 using a raid card or hba card, sas connectors, and some kind of power source. Worst case scenario I have to buy a netapp disk shelf and some cables which is 200$ to format 200$ worth of drives.

    I got a cheap R610 server with just a 1.2 TB 10K SAS disk, but the performance of the vms are very slow. Can i improve the performance attaching more drives?

    • @bobsponge6609
      @bobsponge6609 3 роки тому +3

      Dell offered alot of different raid controllers options with different performances for the R610.
      Be sure to have at least an H700 Dell controller or better. The Perc 6 is pretty common on ebay and it is the slowest of all raid controller sold with it. Check the dell pdf datasheet to see which models are available.

    Is the clover bootloader only needed to boot from the NVme? But if you just wanted the drives themselves for storage, or VMs, it wouldn't be needed?

    • @JasonJordan716

      This is correct. It is only for using the NVMe m.2 SSD for the OS.

    How would I know if my board is a gen 1 or gen 2? I looked at Dells spec sheet and it just says you can install up to an x5690 cpu on the board. What ghz memory are you running? You can flash the bios so it will take 1866ghz ddr3 ecc memory

      I know your comment is 7 months old, but on the R810 there is a plastic service tag on the front that you can pull out with "I" or "II" to let you know the mortherboard version. It might be the same on the R610.

    Great video ! Do you think the Gigabyte GVN710D52GL card is compatible and the dimensions (L=145 W=69 H=15 mm) are right for an R610 server?
