  • Anto RetroGamer Plays: Sonic Chaos - Sonic & Tails in Japan - for the SEGA Game Gear. This is a 'Perfect' walkthrough of Sonic Chaos, which means collecting all six Chaos Emeralds for the game's best ending, without taking any damage. This walkthrough is divided into six parts for each zone, with two short Acts, a Special Stage and a boss Act.
The Special Stage system is quite unique in Sonic Chaos; obtaining 100 rings at any point in the stage, which this game has a lot of. Not only does this give an extra life, but automatically ends the stage. There are only five Special Stages, despite their been six Chaos Emeralds. Robotnik drops his Chaos Emerald, only is Sonic has collected the other five before defeating him. While many stages are easy to collect 100 rings, I will be limiting Special Stages to only one per Zone for a more streamlined walkthrough. Just bear in mind that Tails cannot enter Special Stages in Sonic Chaos, and will get the 'Bad Ending' by default.
Sonic Chaos, SEGA Game Gear - Stage 2: Gigapolis Zone. A more threatening level then the previous one. Be aware of the numerous spikes scattered around both main Acts. Getting 100 rings is actually even easier in Gigapolis Zone, and therefore quicker to get through. Explore carefully, and you will find several areas of multiple Ring Monitors next to each other. Even if you don't wish to do so, each Act can be breezed through in under 30 seconds anyway.
Sonic Chaos' second Special Stage introduces a Pogo-Spring mechanic for the first time. Head to the right, and use these springs to bounce up to the next platform to repeat process. Time your jumps wisely, as bumping into anything knocks Sonic off and eat up time. Be sure to stay on the right, as this is where the Chaos Emerald is. Traversing left will get you a bunch of giant rings, and a Stop Clock item monitor. Unless you really care about score, there really is little point in going left. You can't get the Chaos Emerald anyway. This may take a little practice with the Pogo Spring, but the time is pretty lenient.
BOSS: Bead Worm - It's harder then last time, and probably one of the harder bosses in Sonic Chaos. Bead Worm rises from the ground, sways back and forth, while shooting it's anatomy at you, before respawning to repeat. Pattern movement is key here, alternating from bouncing, to ground. Also be aware that any projectiles attacks that occur after the final hit, can still harm you if not paying attention, which could lead to a cheap death if ringless.
For some reason, Bead Worm takes a lot more hits in the SEGA Master System version with eight, rather then just three. This means it's body will respawn at least once for most players. That said, Act 3 of Gigapolis Zone does have an Invincibilty monitor near the boss for a slight advantage, as well as a much larger screen resolution.
