Absolutely amazing work. I don't understand how people can do this. I would just stare at the original and wouldn't know where to go! I wish I had an artistic vision! As for when you say "They didn't bother to clean this up" or mentions on "dithering", this is probably because Sonic Team had composite in mind as most people used that connection back in the nineties. With that in mind and people playing these on CRT's, it would blend and look more 3D than it actually is. In today's world with emulation or people using RGB SCART, the pixels are a lot sharper so the dithering becomes more obvious. Basically, the whole "Sonic 1 waterfall" theory is in play here. Also, nice chapter reference at 15:45, well played, sir!

And very right! I think I was conflating 2 things being the dithering and some random colours pixels I saw around which didn't belong like a lone grey pixel on the ring. I ended up removing dithering to make way for just adding the extra colours as mania would have, of course. Thanks for your knowledge!
@@LapperDev I was also going to point out this very thing myself. The way CRT screens work means that those harsh, fully-aligned pixels we see on LED screens today (that do look horrible and would normally be cleaned up) would have bled together a LOT more back then because of how the light projection and phosphor reactions, as well as intentionally-staggered "pixel" lines, created a lot more depth and smoothness than the original rigid-pixel image would have led you to believe! XD For modern hardware though, these look absolutely amazing and I really hope SEGA polishes these games up for the Origin collection.

I sort of thought it was weird that he decided to implement dithering (for the background horizon) even with the newer tech but I guess that just goes to show that even with the expanded palette there are still areas where you want the gradient to be smoother than even the extra colors allow

tbh your sonic 2 redesign really shows what kind of effect small details have, seeing my childhood game get this good redraw got me emotional bro. Keep up the good work!!
Very cool, well done! My brain went a bit funny looking at the sped-up editing so I had to skip all that and just go to the results but that was easily done and they are really well done, especially Sonic 3 which... goodness me, nostalgia is a thing isn't it? I didn't remember it looking THAT bad! That's pretty bad! Especially well done bringing that one in-line.
All that's left now is to do this for CD and &Knuckles and for every single frame of each intro sequence so that modders can slap them on Sonic Origins title screens.
Jokes aside, excellent work!

The sonic 3 one was so beautiful! Sonic looked aesthetically pleasing, you managed to NAIL the mania style and over all it’s a gorgeous sight to see.

One thing i loved in the Master System version of Sonic 1, was the map display, which where showing where you are and how you're progressing to the goal. So a idea for a project could be, to create such a overworld map for the MD/Genesis Sonic games. A Island landscape where all zones are kinda visible and where you could see how they are connected.

I really liked your new design for sonic 1 and 2, but Sonic 3 was done brilliantly! I loved the new colours, shading, and hand positions. You should be very proud of yourself, you’ve made a masterpiece.
I love that sonic 3 remake. It captures the mania art style, it’s a really good translation of bad 3D to 2D. You did a really good job making changes for the better, most “restorations” I’ve seen take too much creative liberty and make everything worse.

Watching this I've come to realise that I've appreciated the details on the background more then the emblem and characters, they are definitely fantastic don't get me wrong! But detailing the backgrounds is the extra mile~ Even subtle things like the glow of the water in the Sonic 1 BG.

I really like listening to you describe your work. I like your delivery style, very casual and laid back but clearly very thoughtful at the same time.
The Original Sonic 3 logo looks so crusty in comparison to your remake, probably because they were pushing the Genesis to its limits with that one.
I bet SEGA could have cleaned it up. They just didn't bother because you wouldn't notice on a CRT with the A/V cables people used back then, plus they had a deadline to meet.
@@weirdproq A really, REALLY tight deadline for a McDonald's toy deal that left half the game on the cutting room floor. Plus a strange approach to CGI 3D style visuals and shading with 3 altogether, but was only done in half measures compared to Donkey Kong Country. Really interesting stuff.
The artistic choice was just wrong. They threw off the cartoony style and went with that awkward early 90's computer animation look. That didnt age well and remembers me a little of sonic 3d blast, and i hate it.

What you did in Sonic 3 was probably my favorite. And I agree the increase of the eyes and manipulation of arms and hands made it even better.

Wow I came here expecting to dislike this, but these are amazing!! I especially love the addition of the stars to Sonic 2's title screen. It'll hard to imagine that title without them from this point on. I want the whole series like this now!

Incredible work! My favourite remake is Sonic 3. The original has it's own unique charm to it but you've translated the Mania style to it masterfully.

adding stars to the sonic 2 title screen works really well honestly. sonic 2 is the first game where sonic leaves the planet, goes to space, and confront's eggman's orbital base the death egg. using the title screen to tease that a bit, darkening the sky near the top and adding stars, is a good way to foreshadow that
