  • Anto RetroGamer Plays: Sonic Chaos - Sonic & Tails in Japan - for the SEGA Game Gear. This is a 'Perfect' walkthrough of Sonic Chaos, which means collecting all six Chaos Emeralds for the game's best ending, without taking any damage. This walkthrough is divided into six parts for each zone, with two short Acts, a Special Stage and a boss Act.
The Special Stage system is quite unique in Sonic Chaos; obtaining 100 rings at any point in the stage, which this game has a lot of. Not only does this give an extra life, but automatically ends the stage. There are only five Special Stages, despite their been six Chaos Emeralds. Robotnik drops his Chaos Emerald, only is Sonic has collected the other five before defeating him. While many stages are easy to collect 100 rings, I will be limiting Special Stages to only one per Zone for a more streamlined walkthrough. Just bear in mind that Tails cannot enter Special Stages in Sonic Chaos, and will get the 'Bad Ending' by default.
Sonic Chaos, SEGA Game Gear - Stage 5: Aqua Planet Zone. The obligatory water level in any Sonic game. Despite this, Aqua Planet is one of the easier levels in Sonic Chaos. In fact, you don't even need to be in water at all. Like Aquatic Ruin Zone for Sonic 2, just stick to the upper path, and you'll never have to worry about it. Should curiosity strike, the lower path is much more dangerous, with usual water physics making hazards harder to avoid.
Getting 100 rings in Aqua Planet is very easy, as ring monitors are scattered everywhere. Just be sure to stay on the upper path to find them. It may take a little practice to memorize where they are, as they are usually several ring monitors on high-up places such as loop-de-loops, or after a series of breakable platforms. Getting 100 rings after completing all Special Stages will just get you an extra life, so completing the Act is still required. Act 2 of Aqua Planet is even easier to collect rings, as demonstrated with getting over 200 rings.
Sonic Chaos' final Special Stage is one of the easiest in Sonic Chaos. The tubes make a return here, although it's more complex, acting as a maze which requires specific navigation. With the smaller Game Gear screen resolution, it seems difficult, but is rather easy once you know what to do. Simply hold down when entering the tubes, and you will automatically navigate your way to the final Chaos Emerald. There is a quicker way of doing this by taking a more direct route, but this is certainly easier. It's harder to actually figure out where to go.
BOSS: Sphere-o-Bot - Not too dissimilar to Sleeping Egg's boss, although this one has several phases. It's first phase are a bunch of bird badniks which can easily be dispatched by jumped on, or by spamming a Spin Dash. It's second phase sees Sphere-o-Bot appear and bounce around shooting projectiles. With a well-timed jump, you can simply get on top and bounce on it over and over again, rendering it's attacks worthless. After a number of hits, Sphere-o-bot will enter it's final stage. A number of missiles will be fired across the screen, but simply standing in the middle acts as a safe-spot. One more hit before launching it's attack will finish it off.
