Strymon I R I D I U M - Fender/Vox/Marshall amp & cab impulse responses - GOOD TONES/BAD PLAYING

- Yes, I got one too, but unlike other demo channels this one delivers the sincere honesty of poor quality aimless noodling. The Strymon Iridum hosts Fender Deluxe Reverb, Vox AC30 and Marshall Plexi impulse responses with some surprising dynamic interaction across the controls. If you can't get good sounds out of the Iridium, maybe it's time to quit guitar.

Just got one a couple days ago. Before this, I was totally fine using plugins like Amplitube and Bias FX. Both of those still sound great, but they both sound like recorded guitar. I never got the sensation that I was sitting in front of an amp. The Iridium immediately feels like you are actually playing guitar live through an amp. The differences are subtle but instantly noticeable, especially if you are using headphones directly into the pedal. Perfect for someone like me who doesn't like tinkering with a ton of different amp sounds.
Great comment as well about hearing things in a mix vs a bedroom being way different. Not enough of these pedal demos mention that.
I know this is a bit late, but glad to see this comment. I have a torpedo captor with a mesa fillmore, and own hammer Its and logic pro with all amp modeling and cab modeling. None of them get my same tone and feel as the amp in the room. I play a dynamic screaming lead and it sounds like the elevator music version of that lead. This thing in 5 minutes with no effort in learning 72 studio tricks for post production captured my actual performance.
Hi, I am planning to use this pedal with headphones (no DAW or other equipment). Do you think that would sound well?
@@quegrandemercedes The headphone amp / experience is the best part of the Iridium IMO. It will sound great.
@@quegrandemercedes It will sound amazing. If you're just going to plug headphones into it, there are probably a lot of different less expensive options
Only demo to make this pedal sound legit so far. Best on the Tube!
Matt Davis thanks!
Looking around for examples of this pedal and I have to say this is probably the best video of it. Everything else seems to highlight the player instead of the thing they are playing with...e.g. the pedal and its sounds. Strumming something and then messing around with the knobs/switches really showed me the different sounds it's capable of dialing in. Great job on this video!
This is my far my favorite demo of this so far. Everything sounds terrific here. And the Marshall sounds like a Marshall for sure. I've never played a Plexi that I can remember, but I've owned a JCM2000 during the 90s, and borrowed many JCM800s and JCM900s live, and recorded on them in the studio, and the Iridium sounds pretty on point. Even the open back 2x12 totally sounds like the different sound you get with an open back vs the closed back 4x12. Great job Ryan!
i honestly wonder how some of the other people covering it were recording it, because was super easy for me to dial in good tones, some of the other videos I watched sounded pretty brittle.
@@60CycleHumcast I had the same opinion when watching some of the other clips, though much of the other stuff sounds awesome too. Whatever you did, you did it right. I ordered this a few days ago (just shipped today), and after watching your video, I feel a lot more confident about this. You're noodling sounds a bit like mine, so I could almost imagine I was trying it myself. Thanks again!
Great video. Especially the Mid-Knob is, in my experience, a very crucial one on a tube-amp. Strymon did a very good job, it seems. All the sounds have a nice body and directness which most of the big amp-sims still are missing. From all the videos I've seen, it seems that the Iridium gives the player the pleasure of a natural reacting amp and not to play for the sounds but with them. Hope this makes sense :-).
Good job and thank you.
Hey Ryan, I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make this and share it with us; very impressive pedal man!
I’ve been all over this internet “researching” this iridium. All the other fancy players with obviously added jazz to their sound, and you just plugged in direct and bam 💥 sounds great. I will now buy one. Thank you! P.s. you’re fancy too, in an honest way 😎
Can’t say enough great things about the Iridium. Long time tube amp guy... Can’t believe it. Demo’ed & was going to buy a Kemper (or an OX box)... but no need now. Iridium sounds awesome through headphones, studio monitors (and even with IR’s off through effect return on my tube amp). Frankly it sounds better than my real Deluxe Reverb 🙃 I’m still in shock how the Iridium has changed everything I thought I knew about amplification.
How much of an improvement would you call this over the amp models of a DAW like GarageBand or logic? I hate the tones I get in those softwares when playing through headphones. If the iridium sounds like a real amp in your headphones, then that’s what I need... so I can practice in an apartment without bothering people.
s2seltaeb I’d be VERY surprised if you didn’t find Iridium 1000% better than DAW tones. Headphones are never gonna be ideal with any amp but you need to try a few different headphones to find a good one.
Great review, show cased the sounds better than 90% of the Strymon videos currently out there, all sounded on point.
yeah, i dont know whats up with the other videos, i wonder if people are needlessly complicating their recording rigs, i plugged straight in and it was super easy to dial in great sounds.
I concur. The other videos on this seems more about "look how great I play guitar" I need a guy like Ryan to show me how to use these Multi Stomps.
I'm loving todays new approaches to digital.. So many good and useful products on the market. keep em coming. I can see myself with this unit on my pedalboard as a front end.
I use my Iridium almost exclusively now. Replaced my Suhr badger 35. My pedalboards integrate wonderfully with the iridium. No regrets at all.
Thanks for taking the time to do the review. I have the HX stomp but the simplicity of the Iridium looks more like my thing. The Chime is sublime!
15:00.... Thank you for actually giving it a little gas. Every other review is jangly jazzy bits on single coils. It's a Plexi FFS, the amp of EVH & Slash!
"Option Anxiety" is the problem I have with my POD Go and Helix-style products. A gazillion options too many. Let's face it, the gazillion options are just options of the basic three amps anyway, right? Every amp out there is a version of either a Fender, Vox, or Marshall. The Strymon Iridium simply reduces the options down to the most basic choices, brilliantly, and there are KNOBS you can tweak on the fly!
Spot on, I have a few amps including a Boss Katana Artist and also an HX Stomp. The sheer amount of tweaking with Stomp to get two sounds is making me want to get an Iridium and use the Stomp just for effects.
Aloha Braddah and thanks for the in depth demo of this pedal....nice job of it! You helped me to get closer to the reality of the price of the pedal with a much better informed mindset on the capabilities of this pedal. It's sibling, the HX Stomp is not too faraway price wise but allows a more precise fine tuning from what little I know of it (which adds a higher level of difficulty and bench time). This is more simple, plug and play. Mahalo for the time you put in to bring this to our ears!
It’s pricey, but sounds pretty dang good! I do like the easy access of knobs and switches, and not having to dig through menu’s. Thanks Ryan!
Sounds great, Ryan!
Great run through man. Nice work. Don’t be afraid of the ‘Marshall’ sound. Great amplifiers, and even great cleans to be found within. I gigged and recorded an early 80s dual channel JCM 800 for years through a 4x12 Marshall cabinet and had awesome clean sounds, plus of course epic drive channel sounds.
I like this video the best out of the four I watched. Yours was the most well done and concise as 2 cups of coffee, exactly! I also bought a coffee cup.
Great demo. 4th one on this pedal I've watched this week. Yours is by far the best. Thanks.
Strymon are smart cookies! The Iridium is the most revered guitar club in America in NYC. Former home to the Les Paul Trio!
Also the chemical element marked as "Ir" on the periodic table(as in impulse response) so...
This is such a great concise demo! Thanks man.
Great demo: not so much 'showing off' the pedal, nor too much talking, but really shows the differences between the tones and how they can be used. The Iridium looks more useful to me than an amp I was considering... Thanks !
The surf blackface tip. Pure gold!
thats where i live. i have a little board set up in the studio right now to record some surf stuff with it. If i get my other work done ill record it today or tomorrow.
@@60CycleHumcast Are you using a tiny amp. I'm looking at this Supro 5 watt thing that is a copy of Joe Perry's little amp
The CAB switch alone ... is pretty rad👍🏻
it sounds really good.
Nice review. After seeing other reviews I was expecting to be able to set the level and then dial in different amounts of drive without needing to change the level but when I change drive on mine I have to reset the level. Glad you've found the same.
You can set the output level as well if needed, which will apply to all presets.
Nothing wrong with your playing, man. Sounds good to me! Now I've got to get me one of these!
Best demo on the iridium I’ve seen so far
Yes it’s very good.
Set course for the *Iridium* system. Maximum warp. 👉
_Bosh-ta-JaH Iridium!_
You know what was rude and nasty? That Marshall through the 8x10!
Damn impressive!!! Sounds as good as the high end stuff!!!
what would be the high end stuff?;)
@@CasualFridayLive Real amps :D
@@CasualFridayLive All of them. The digital specs are better then any of them! Anything else is subjected. To say another sounds better when it only sounds different is arguable but hardly conclusive ...merely antidotal.
@@Paul_Lenard_Ewing well im waiting for mine since 4 weeks (here in germany)
Best AC 30 mod Ive ever heard. Its perfect.
Amazing you already got your hands on one!! Nice!
Late to the party, but a great review! Strymon should have used you to demo the Iridium. I can really appreciate the differences in tones. Well done!
I was worried about the round setting as it sounded thin on everyone else reviews, but I noticed they didn't mess with the midrange. I'm glad to hear a better sound out of it, really like the 2x10 from everything else I've heard with it.. I like you turned up the bass and left treble alone. Having that balance setup better it's hard to find a bad sound out of the midrange really... I actually liked the dry sound of the amp surprisingly, I figured I'd like the medium setting... I could imagine taking that dry into a big sky for sure its very clear.... Ah, I was under the impression as you swept the room knob it changed, but you have to set it to green yellow or red THEN dial in how much of that you want ? surprising... maybe at the same setting you use with green it would be clear enough yet more realistic still.
Merry Christmas Ryan... saw your on stage with Dovydas.. Fun stuff buddy...
Great review. Thanks for posting. I've been using the Sansamp RK-5 for situations where an amp can't be used. I think switching to this unit would definitely be an upgrade.
Excellent walkthrough! Thank you.
The Vox setting sounds killer
That is an amazing tool. If I was playing out more...
I use it, because i travel a lot. Good earphone and than 1-3 good pedals, whatever you need, and its awesome. I could also go directly in a sound system awesome. Try the behringer vintage tube screamer in front of it. Its got a tube in it. AWESOME!
Nice demo, thanks! Had already one ordered, although i have a Kemper...
Ok,
Now you have my attention... more video please👍
Not sure when but this pedal is defiantly in my future.
Personally i dont think it sounds any different than a mooer micro preamp. they’re like $80 so i really recommend checking them out
Excellent review, thanks!
Thanks for the review!
Interested to hear how this thing feeds back/sustains. Great run through of everything but don't hear any long trailing off chords/notes.
Well done demo sir!
nice demo, Ryan. I wasn't looking for one, but it's definitely interesting...might be my Xmas present to myself lol
This was a good honest demo. Well done!
I love these reviews!
Very good review. Need to decide between this and the new Dream from UA Dream 65
Screen shot that Fender sound you saved. Gotta try those settings out, sounds so good! Also, love that you can visually see what every setting is on the pedal (unless IR’s have been edited in the software, of course).
Great demo, love the way you always through Rumble in there somewhere :)
I love link wray
Great channel, Ryan. This little pedal is on the top of my to-get list. How would you use this live? Direct to house? Through a cab/amp/FRFR? Thanks.
Nice demo! Keep rocking =]
Cool demo, some sweet amp like tones! Cheers :)
you are the coolest boy alive, ´ love your vids.
nice demo! I like it!
This is the best demo on the Tube. Bad playng is kool :))))
Man you did a great demo! Playing live, what do you play through? What about not playing through a speaker wedge but having your own monitoring there with you?
What a tone! wow
It sounds really good.
Been on a quest for the perfect DI plexi tone. This thing has me gassing really hard. Dunno why, but all the reviews so far are all single coil. Sorry, but a plexi just begs for humbuckers. Sounds so huge.
How did it sound in the headphones compared to the recording?
Heph333 sounded the same.
If only this had a USB recording interface , that would seal the deal for me
Really? I mean you can just get an audio interface, plug it in and use a DAW. Not hard.
Would have loved a scrappy tweedy 1x8" cab sim to be included but that's just me
You can load your own impulses ☝🏻️
I was a bit harsh on your live vid. This sounds much better!! I just purchased a TwoNotes Torpedo CAB so I can’t wait to try it. Open or closed back headphones?
yeah, youtube really mangled the audio on the live video.
Good review
Very musical sounds.
I'd love to hear a shootout between this and the Tech21 Character Series pedals.
Ryan, this thing sounds uber cool! I'll let you know if my VOX valvetronix will do that when I add the Tone Lab feature.
Nice pedal and very nice IR but at the price the field is wide open. Once a few bigger players get involved the price will sit well with me. Hopefully Stymon's next venture will be a full on multiple effects unit similar to the Eventide H9. They really need to build their units to function on an Apple and Android phone.
I liked the B cab on the Marshall the best
Great review. Why kind of headphones are you using?
Amazing pedal. I really don't mean to be one of these cork-sniffer dudes. I think this absolutely has its great and very useful applications... just to my ears, none of its settings sound like the real amp equivalent. I am not the guy here shitting on it and putting it down, it really is cool when you can't use amps. Its just an observation in comparison to a tube amp - the drives still sound somewhat fizzy to me, and the cleans sound a little sterile, flat and less depth. A brilliant compromise, but still not quite a replacement.
@Luke Robinett no, they break up and crunch. They never possess digital fizz. Can you tell me a little more about how you came to your conclusion about my experience, please ?? I am a qualified sound engineer, I own and run Outland Studios and I make most of my living via my pedal company Rafferty Guitar Pedals. Feel free to look it up. Within this company, not only do I regularly test prototype pedals through many amps including AC30s using spectral analysis etc, I have also built a few of my own amps from scratch. I regularly record the amps this pedal models in my recording studio, where mic selection as well as precise mic placement makes a big difference. I'm also a regular gigging and touring guitarist. What's your experience? Never heard anyone call a naturally breaking up tube amp "fizzy".
@@skeletalwreck Hi, would be interested to know what you think of the Ethos ua-cam.com/video/qOv_IYe62xI/v-deo.html
And ua-cam.com/video/fvzGi_dqMMY/v-deo.html
Mind you, ?Mike is so good, he could make anything sound good. There’s very talented people doing gear reviews but I think Mike is something else.
I think the dirt tones are probably a bit sterile, but the cleans sound good to me
You keep using the phrase "impulse response" seemingly talking about the whole thing. The only part that is an impulse response is the cabinet and part of the room emulation. The part that emulates the amp itself is not an impulse response. The room reverb is a combo of an impulse response and an algorithmic reverb.
I was completely sold on this but then I saw the atomic ampli-fire box.. Now I'm leaning more towards the latter. Anybody have any thoughts on this?? Ryan? Anybody?
I'm dying to hear which has better models. The stereo Iridium will have a huge advantage, but you can add a realky good stereo reverb to the AFB and still have money left in your pocket.
@@rangerdoc1029 great point. I have the BigSky and a stereo delay so for the money I'll save and the more options the Ampli-fire box has I think it's a better option FOR ME. And, a added bonus... I bought the strymon deco I always wanted with the money I saved!
Thanks for the great reviews, as always! Quick question: where would you put it in your chain? Do delays and reverbs sound good after? They would be after the cab, technically, is that a problem?
I can't speak for this pedal, but I run SansAmps and other preamps with cabinet emulation into a PA, and delays and reverbs after sound great. Though I put delay before the preamp, but that's only my preference.
AMT actually make a couple of preamp pedals that have a built in effects loop if that's your jam.
Not that familiar with IR's, but I like what I heard.
from what i understand they record a sample sound through a real amp and that becomes the basis for how your signal is processed. That probably pretty simplistic, but basically how it works.
@@60CycleHumcast thanks Ryan. How soon until the ukulele video comes out?
oh man, lol. I have them all unpacked and ive been jamming with them... maybe next week???? i need to get it done so i can figure out what to do with all of them, there are ukes and uke cases all over my office right now.
@@60CycleHumcast IR are used only to reproduce the cab, the amp simulation is 100% coded, starting from the equations that describe the analog circuit with tubes, resistors, capacitors etc... inside the real amp!
Anyway to play backing track through this?
Great Demo Ryan, like all your Demos. My question is, I have two Marshall Quad Boxes and could I run this pedal straight into one or both of them without having to go through an amp head?
You would need a power amp to use regular guitar speakers
Please do a comparison with Nux Solid Studio. I own one and I am curious to see a comparison! :D
Daft late comment but where is the hum.............brilliant that you don't have it but have you done something to eliminate or is it just not there??????
great video, thank you. It would have helped me if you would also let some chords ring and let the fade out. it would have been easier for me to keep listening! anyways, subbed your channel ;)
Hello I'm Angus Young ,be very careful when you cross the street.
Good vidéo.
le bourreau ))))
Hey do you plan on making a mod 11 demo? And I am liking the fender sounds on this one.
i thought about it, but it wasn't in the budget for me when it came out and ehx doesn't send out demo units to guys like me.
@@60CycleHumcast that's too bad. If I was doing better with money I would send you one :p
I feel like Strymon should have just skipped the “room” adjustment and made a reverb knob. Maybe V2…?
I know it is not an overdrive pedal, but........since you can bypass the cabs I wonder how it would work as an overdrive pedal in front of a real amp. If it works you have a 3 amps in a box overdrive pedal.......
theres no reason you couldn't use it as an overdrive. Its not like the tone police will show up and arrest you.
@@60CycleHumcast you don´t have tone police in USA??? What are you, animals?
Maybe not into the front of the amp, but turn off the cab sim and run into the effects return, thus making this a preamp?
I do not use a software DAW but rather a TASCAM 8 track digital recorder.
Does Irridium have 1/4" or XLR outs to use the direct to a recording interface or is it limited to USB functionality?
dual 1/4" jacks
@@60CycleHumcast Thank you
I do wish that it had balanced outputs. If I were to use this at Church I would have to buy a direct box.
Not only a set of balanced outputs (as well as current 1/4") but a send/return for effects....this would make the pedal bigger....similar to a Big Sky in size....but that would be ok with most people.
Has anyone tried the iridium with a Fender Reverb Unit in front?
Is it vert noisy with hambuckers?
Recording direct is just one case use. How about getting those awesome sounds live in a venue? I've not been using the amp modelers thus far, partially because the whole FRFR cab world seems to be a giant rabbit hole and you want to have something for live use after learning to use all of these amps and cabs. Do you have recommendations for that?
When ive used it live i go straight into the pa and monitor through the monitor mix. I dont have any official FRFR cabs so i wont be covering the iridium in that way.
60 Cycle Hum What about the case that’s in-between “live in a venue” and “recording direct”, i.e., noodling in your living room (tolerant significant other!) or jamming with friends in your garage? (I am wondering if Iridium would be better than a small tube amp with an attenuator...)
I don't have studio monitors , can I use this with just a nice set of headphones? Thanks!
Of course!
How’d you manage not to have any 60 cycle hum? No pun intended
I have the same question....
Great review! The question is, is this device sound closer on headphones that we’ve listened here? I wanna use this as practice tool with headphones.
don't know if you got your answer, but to me, the Iridium sounds better in headphones than it does plugged into my Focusrite into StudioOne on my PC. So you should be good
Sounds amazing with headphones. I play with open back hps and have to take them off sometimes thinking my amp or monitors are on.
What headphones are you using? Apparently the impedance is important
The HX stomp sounds like garbage. THIS sounds awesome!
I've heard some people have issues when using headphones with the iridium. Was that something you experienced Ryan?
Nope
