Got one ordered, now Strymon make a rack mount version with two sets of tone controls, dual xlr out, a stereo loop, and a a multi channel footswitch with a solo boost option.
I’ve recorded bass with it and it’s my favorite bass tone I’ve been able to get direct. For whatever reason the Punch with the 4x12 sounded awesome to my ears. That’s really the thing that separates this from the other modelers. It’s insanely easy to dial in the exact tone you want. I was adding guitar parts to something I had recorded before and within 5 minutes matched the tone of my tube amp that I mic’d and recorded a lead part. I couldn’t tell the difference. It’s really great.
There are many IR products on the market, but I think DYNAX IR has the best sound. As stated in their product description, DYNAX IR is really fast. Strymon- please make a deluxe version with 2 sets of amp switches and the ability to send each amp to its respected output separately through XLR outputs. Many players (myself included) use wet/dry rigs and this would allow you to send an Amp sim (say Fender) out on one channel, and another type (Vox or Marshall) out on the other.

It won't power a cab. It plugs directly into an audio interface, headphones or a PA system. It's emulating an entire recorded guitar tone signal chain of Amp -> Speaker Cab -> Microphone
Thanks for your question, Jason. Here's my take: It depends… If you want to set up the chain like an amp without an effects loop, then yes, Iridium is last. If you want to set up the chain as if you are in a studio, then place your time domain effects after the Iridium. Technically you can place anything after it, since in order to connect to a mic pre on your interface or mixer, you'll likely use a direct box. You can utilize it both ways. The before really controls the dynamics into the amp and the gain structure of the input. Do it after and it gives. what I call, a Mesa Mk series compression that beefs up the sound but still allows you to tailor the tone response by your dynamics and guitar volume.

Ok, Mitch, you explained a fairly interesting audio routing with the pedals - Riverside to Iridium; Iridium to delay and verb. Did you just come off of the stereo outputs of the Iridium or did you use some other secret sauce? I’ve heard demos with the pedals all in front of the iridium and thought it sounded amazing. Nice demo and thanks!
I personally can't even tell that he isn't playing through an amp. If you closed your eyes or tabbed away from the video I bet you wouldn't even guess he's playing through a pedal.
That was my first impression, too. I kept forgetting all the sound was coming from the pedal directly (even though that's the whole point of the demo).
Unbelievably well. The 'room' feature makes you forget you're wearing headphones. None of that 'up against your head' thing you get normally. I have this feature on my audio interface and can now practice with headphones without the computer.
IR stands for impulse response. It's kind of like a snapshot of a cabinet's acoustical properties. I don't know if they still do, but Redwirez used to offer a free pack of Marshall 1960A impulse responses recorded with 18 different mics in up to 40 different mic positions. The rest of their cabs you had to pay for. There's other sites that offer IRs as well. Some free. Some paid for. It's surprising how much your tone can change by doing nothing more than using a different IR.
Hi, Josh. You could run this into an effects loop, but just remember that you would be running a cab IR into another cabinet. That may not give you the best sound possible, but it is an option. Try running a lush reverb into a dirty amp. Unless you want shoegaze tones, you want verb and delay post distortion. Also, this is not a preamp. But if you don’t understand these things, there’s nothing more I can say that will change that. Lush or at least clear and articulate verbs and delays that will also be able to be heard through Iridium’s headphone out is what I’m getting at.
@@neenerheaddj I didn't say you should run reverb before a dirty amp, LOL. You would run reverb AFTER this unit, not BEFORE. And yeah, amp modeling units ARE preamps, fed into either a power amp or directly to P.A. (with cab sim enabled). Yes they emulate power amp as well, but the point is they are a preamp as far as the way you'd build a chain. Guitar into the Iridium, then into delay and reverb, then into power amp or D.I.
what is your reason for wanting to route the time based effects through the IR filter? you could just run the iridium into delays+reverbs, like it's done with a miced up amp sound in any DAW in the mixing phase... i am just curious.
I’m thinking the same thing. He said there are a lot more Amps to choose from, so I wonder if they threw some bass amp ims in there to cater to us bass players. If not I’m sure a bass would still sound good running through it :).
If you want different amps and different cabs, this is better. If you want just one good tube preamp amp and one good cab, as well as a speaker out and DI out, then The Amp is better.
Always love how companies try to say what the models are without using brand names - I used to have a Wampler Paisley Drive which had a suggested setting of 'What starts with V and rhymes with Socks?" :P
The iridium sounds really good, very warm and organic, with no digital nuances. But at £399 UK it just seems a heck of a lot of money for something that emulates just 3 amps, 9 cabs, 3 room reverbs and one patch save. I appreciate it's going for top quality tone, response & playing dynamics, but even so. With the new Pod Go providing full mfx capability with Helix quality modelling & IR importing, for the same price of £399 will the Iridium really be noticeably better? I think this is a pedal for tube purists/pro players that are very, very, VERY particular about their tone and need something to 'replace' their amps/cabs with something very light, compact and flexible to fit on their conventional pedal boards with good routing options and very natural sounding room reverb. This is a very different market to those wanting fuller MFX options, so it's not in competition with Helix, Pod Go, etc. At this price point, it's most definitely not for me personally, and as an amateur gigging player my next purchase will almost certainly be Pod Go for my gigging needs (once it finally gets to the UK!). But I can definitely see where Strymon are coming from and the Iridium is already highly respected for what it does.
It's basically a preamp. You'd have to use a powered speaker or a power amp with it. Or, if you're gigging with it, you'd run it into the house system.
I think for the demo he's going from the Strymon > audio interface > DAW. Or it can go direct into a front of house/PA system. Or into powered full range monitors. Or (I think from the manual) you can plug it into an effects loop return of a guitar amp.
blackprophesy thru the return input Strymon said it won’t sound as good. So I wanted this, but I’m not going to spend this amount for a meh sound. I’m not connected to a computer and all that goes with it. But full range powered monitors would work? There goes more money and I have non powered, passive, unused monitors. I’m going to be forced to pass.
This is a preamp. 4cm is a moot point. Any pre effects go in front of this. Post effects after this. Think of this pedal as the "fx loop" in a 4cm scenario.
Dude really knows what he's talking about. Nice.
As an Axe-FX III user, I got admit, this looks like an extremely simple, yet amazing sounding device. Also, everything I’ve ever touched with s Strymon badge on it has been a top-shelf product. I’m sure the Iridium will NOT disappoint.

Hi, Josh. You could run this into an effects loop, but just remember that you would be running a cab IR into another cabinet. That may not give you the best sound possible, but it is an option. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me anytime. Thanks for the interest!

Sweetwater TY! I’ve checked the online manual an option to disable/bypass the CAB Sim. Sounds like a good option to me!
Excellent review
Thanks, Fede! 😎👍

The omission of an FX Loop and Aux In is a bummer.
You don't need an FX loop on a preamp. An FX loop offers insertion for post effects, with this you simply run them after the output.
@@neenerheaddjAs far as what you'd hear in the headphones, I suppose you're correct
Wow pedal kills the amp Star
Anything like this for bass guitar?
Some of the Darkglass pedals have a (single) built-in impulse response. Not quite the same, but in the neighborhood.
Checkout the Geddy Lee Sansamp
I’m thinking the same thing. He said there are a lot more Amps to choose from, so I wonder if they threw some bass amp ims in there to cater to us bass players. If not I’m sure a bass would still sound good running through it :).
@@grantwilliams5458 yeah...that's what I was figuring.
Grant Williams ... you can load different cabs, but you can’t load different amps.
Nice device, but it would be nice to have an input for an external music player to jam with. Still a very useful pedal.
Is it better than Milkman The Amp?
If you want different amps and different cabs, this is better. If you want just one good tube preamp amp and one good cab, as well as a speaker out and DI out, then The Amp is better.
Strymon should put out an amp like The Katana but of course it would be more high end amp
This sounds great 👍🏽
Good job on avoiding the lawsuit.

Round | Chime Punch rather than Fender | Vox | Marshall. 0.o
Michael P. Nah egnater has Fender, Vox and Marshall written right on their tweaker 15 head.
I'd say this takes less fiddling around I guess 🤷♂️
So when adding pedals that’s all in the “front”? No way to utilize delays and reverbs as if they’re in an fx loop?
What a trip!
7:16 "PUNCH", not crunch.

HOW MUCH
jack benson $400 plus tax.
That's gotta be a fun job.
So, is he going from the pedal into a speaker cabinet ? Is the pedal the amp/head ??
No 4 cable method?
This is a preamp. 4cm is a moot point. Any pre effects go in front of this. Post effects after this. Think of this pedal as the "fx loop" in a 4cm scenario.
Wow so Cool!!!!!
