This is basically the best Octatrack video ever made. Always refer back to it. Thank you for clearing it up! (again and again!) ---> best way to use the bloody machine for daw'less lives !!!
Thanks!!! I always used banks to do what you do with parts. Using parts is way more efficient though, now I can do a whole lot more within one pattern. I can now use banks as individual songs in a live situation and use parts to switch between (duh) the parts of a song :) Many thanks, it was a bit confusing indeed, because when you switch parts in real time you'd always get this hiccup, when assigning them to patterns however, it suddenly all makes sense!
Boahh i have my Octatrack since a week now and love it. But parts was a strange thing to understand for me. Finally i understand parts correctly. Thank you 🙏🏼😉
Thanks! I got an OT2 and I've been watching like 8 hours of Octatrack 1 and 2 videos to learn how to use this damn thing. Everyone seems to ignore this haha+.
It's really deep the octatrack and having to understand everything takes time but I can't wait to make some crazy stuff with it once I'm upto speed! Great video
I didn’t even understand why there were parts at all in the Octatrack. After working hard to learn the OT, I saw why parts are so important. Anyway, excellent short tutorial on the work the Why and How of the Parts function. Thank you
Thanks for explaining that, very confusing indeed until it's explained like this. I've owned an octatrack since they came out and I have never used patterns haha.
Big like. I just got an octatrack and have watched probably 30 video guides and still didn't understand that the triggers and parameters locks were separate from the parts.
This is a reasonable application of the PART system. But it'd be much easier to just parameter lock the first step of pattern 2 so that it changes sample. The PART system is much more useful for changing multiple parameters at once. Using parts in this way is mostly just confusing. Don't forget to save your parts! Think of them as KITS.
Thanks for the clarification. Very helpful. Just wondering, in the digitakt, switches patterns does not lock the samples to the patterns. Meaning any sample can change per step per pattern, its a wild and beautiful circus. Wondering why parts layers needed to be presented in the octa environment. Is there a benefit of adding parts over the way its done in the digitakt? Just curious.
Hmm, yeah it really makes the workflow different. The Digitone, like the Digitakt, saves all it's parameters per pattern. This can be a bit cumbersome when copying patterns and making changes. You end up having to go back and make changes to several patterns if you want the sounds to match. On the Octatrack, as well as Rytm and A4, the sounds are stored apart from the patterns so tweaking a sound in one pattern effects all the others with that sound. Which is a bit harder to wrap your head around but it affords you more workflow options.
Sorry about the delayed reply. Yes, Machines are tied to the Part so they can be changed with the pattern like I've shown in the video. Basically any parameter associated with a track can be changed with the Parts.
This is helpful as I have this issue on my OT MK2. So if I have 4 parts and 4 patterns in Banks A-F and want to sequence them with different samples loaded to T1-T8 for each part, this would work and how would I configure the sequence to switch from Part 1 to Part 2 and also change that to sequence Part 1 to Part 4 in a loop?
Renaissance Man If I understand you correctly, I think you are asking if you can use parameter locks to change Parts. Unfortunately that isn't possible, Parts can be associated with patterns but not specific triggers. You can however lock any sample loaded into your sample pool with a parameter lock. This can be done by holding the trigger you want to change and turning the level knob to select a sample from your pool.
hi there, i am trying to change the presets in the minitaur, from the octatrack, but i can't find the way. i did it from the ableton and it was no problem... that function it's working on the moog... do you know something about it? thanks!!!
hi i understand it a bit but when i have 4 parts and 16 patterns i can make like 4 songs so i have 4 parts but when i want to make a next one i have to change the bank how do i do that? from A01 to A02 or i dont know how it is, on the rytm everything is much easier..
In case anyone else comes across this, you should be able to do this using sample locks as well (hold trig in rec mode, turn level to choose from the slots)
Yeah that works great when you are not working with a lot of slices. The problem is when you have a loop sliced up with linear locks set on every trigger, you would have a hell of a time changing each of those individual triggers for a pattern change. It is a lot less work to change the part than 64 p-locks.
Inflatable Robot yeah that's true, slices would change that, I've never tried the set linear locks on a sample lock though, I wonder if that would work?
Actually yeah you can do that with sample locks, you just need to go into the sample selection menu, FN+edit on the sliced loop and linear locks, I didn't try it without having sample locked trigs set up but you might be able to try it without sample locks too!
Thank you for the clear explanation! On my Octatrack it only works when I change the Machine Type as well.. is that maybe new to the new Octatrack model or am I doing something wrong?
This hasn't changed with new versions of the octatrack hardware and software. Perhaps you may have missed a step. Are you setting up the Part differently for the patterns you want to change.
so when i Modify pattern 2 part 2...like ad Delay or Reverb will it change anything on Part 1 Pattern 1? or will it now give me total flexibility over each part now..?
If you change any of the machine settings it sticks with the part. You can then use a pattern to change parts. If say Pattern1 is associated to Part1 and Pattern2 is associated to Part2 and you change any of the effect settings on Pattern2 it will not effect Pattern1.
If you are setting the OT up for a live show are you only able to set up 4 songs (parts)? If not how do you load up a 5th and 6th song to transition from song to song?
+Ryan Air ok but when i program bank: A01and assign it to part 1, then switch to bank: B01 and assign it to part 2. Then I should have "2 complete songs" correct? As of now my machines keep getting scrambled through out my other banks
Thanks a lot man. I appreciate you time. Would you know how to save machines MUTE positions. FOr example in pattern 1, I have Machines 1-2-3-4 on MUTE ON, but then in pattern 2 I have different MUTE ON in my machines on for example -5-6-7-8. Now, when I change the patterns from 1 to 2 the MUTE ON ( pat no 1 ) remains on pat. no 2. How to have individual MUTE positions for differnt patterns ?if that makes sence ? EAch time I change the pattern I need to remind myself what ON/OFf buttons I had in Pat 1 ?
Thanks for a great explanation. Any chance you could explain pattern chaining please? I cant get my head around on what purpose this is for when one can use an arranger and loop from there?
Well, Pattern Chaining lets you set certain patterns to loop. For instance you can set patterns 1 & 2 to chain then the Octatrack will play pattern 1 then switch to pattern 2 before then going back to pattern 1. You can make all 16 patterns chain, so in a way you can use this as a kind of song mode where each pattern automatically advances to the next. This can nice if you don't want to get into the arranger yet.
thank you. makes sense but I still don't see how this is different from an arranger yet when arranger is much more powerful. not about to set an argument here. just trying to understand realistic pattern chaining scenario
Honestly I don't use pattern chaining all that much except when I am feeling too lazy to program things out in the arranger. I really only do this when I am making a quick one track. Really if you don't see the use in the feature then there is no reason to use it. One of the great things about the OT is that there are so many ways to go about doing things. Pick your poison.
Does this mean we could have all different sounds (8) for each patter on a different part? I thought it was just one sound, sorry, I’m almost there I think
Yes pretty much. Parts hold the settings for the selected sample, fx, and scenes (slider settings). And there are 4 parts per bank, so you can completely change all 8 tracks and all 16 scenes. Each of the 16 patterns per bank can be assigned to any of the 4 parts.
I am trying to setup OT Mk1 for longer sets, 90+ minutes of performance (ableton taking care of sequencing other hardware synths) I am going via the banks system, so Bank A part 1, Bank B part 2 etc.. Would this also be a way of doing things or would having parts per pattern be quicker?
When you select a Bank you must also select a Pattern. So yes, it would be quicker to use Patterns with different Parts assigned. You could then stay in each Bank longer, switching Patterns rather than switching Banks which takes extra button presses. But if you have a system that you understand and works for you, then it may be better to just stick with what you are comfortable with.
hmmm i changed samples on the same machine in different patterns and it stuck :/ didnt need to use parts addition/correction: my second pattern was made on its own, the sample screw up only happens with the pattern when its copy pasted.
I am so stupid. Maybe this video is old? I guessing not though. I followed directions each step. It is still the same sample on both parts. But thanks for the video. I really do appreciate you even though this is nine years ago. And I will probably be one of those people who just gives up on the Octatrack.
Nah you aren't stupid, shit is just weird. Kinda sounds like the OT isn't switching parts. Let's try this. Do the following with the OT stopped. Select your first pattern, then go into the parts menu and select part 1 (up arrow) and hit YES. Then select your next pattern, go into the parts menu, select part 2 (right arrow) and hit YES. Now open your parts menu again, and while it is open hold your pattern button and switch between your two patterns. You should see the part switching as you switch patterns. Don't give up, it will click if you keep at it.
@@InflatableRobot WowI I appreciate you so much. Yes, that worked indeed. So I guess that just means that patterns can be assigned to parts. I am still not quite sure why that makes sense in terms of the architecture of the OT. But I will keep at it. But all of the samples are global in a project? In other words when I change a sample in one pattern it changes it for all the patterns in a project? I am so used to my Model Samples and Model Cycles, it's hard so hard to make the jump to the OT. Thanks again.
@@swampdweller5 Hell yeah, glad that worked. There are 4 parts per bank and the parts tell the track which sample to play from the global list of samples. So I usually think of a bank as a song, and the 4 parts let me have 4 setups per song. So like Part 1 will be the intro, Part 2 can be the verses, Part 3 can be the chorus, and Part 4 the outro. If I even need to use them all, which I usually only use 1 or 2 parts for a track.
Inflatable Robot Thank you for this video. I am still a bit confused. Should not Part 2 have its own set of patterns 1-16? And when I change the sample in Flex machine on Part 1 it also changes it in Part 2. Why is that? It's the opposite to what is demonstrated in your video. Do I necessarily have to copy patterns to achieve what you are doing?
max sergeev Patterns are completely separate from Parts. Patterns contain all of the sequencing data, such as triggers and p-locks. Parts contain the data relating to the tracks, such as the type of machine, what sample is loaded and all the parameters for playback, amp, lfo, and the effects. So Part 2 will not have its own set of patterns, though it will have its own set of scenes because scenes are stored in the Part. I can't be sure why your samples are not changing. It seems like you may not have applied Part 2 to a different Pattern. Try switching to a different Pattern before changing Parts. Once in the new Pattern, for example Pattern 2, open your Parts menu and switch to the Part you would like to use. Once you switch to a new Part it should stick with the Pattern.
Inflatable Robot I'm having the same issue as the original poster (just got the Octatrack.) For example I have: On Part One: PATTERN A01 Track 1 - Synth Sample 001 Track 2 - Bass Sample 001 Track 3 - Sound FX Sample 001 Once I save this in Part One, I then do this: Part Two PATTERN A02 I assign: Track 1 - Drum Loop 002 (from an empty Sample Slot in the list) and then I save Part Two. But as soon as I assign the new Sample to Track 1 of Pattern A02 on Part 2 and save it, it also puts that sample back on Part One when I switch over to Pattern A01... and I keep going back and forth like this. Any help is greatly appreciated. I posted more details of exactly what I am doing over at the Elektronauts Forum - www.elektronauts.com/topics/view/14309
+Genshi Media Group have you found any fixes to the problem? I thought i had mine fixed but i opened up some tracks that i had about finished and the machines are all mixed up from other tracks... So back to square one. If you find something that works, please fill me in ya?!
Do you NEED to have your drum loop sliced and laid out in the triggers or can you just sample a one shot and sequence that while using parts? I've been trying to figure out "parts" for a while now and can't seem to get it to work...
If you are using a drum loop as a one shot and you want to change to a different loop you may as well just change the sample with a P-lock. But if you have two different loops that are both sliced it would be very time consuming to go through each trigger and change it to the new sample and slice. Once your slices are set for both loops you can use a different part to change the default loop of the track and save yourself a lot of time.
Woah woah woah... change the sample with a P-lock?? How do you do that? I've had my Octatrack for about 3 months but work on the road so can't give it as much time as I'd like. Still lots to learn. So now I have two questions, how to change samples with parameter locks, and what am I do wrong with parts? I definitely don't understand all of the functions of the Octatrack. It's really indepth!
Thanks so much brother. How would you use different parts in the arrangement? Say i want the sample in T1 to change in the arrangement when it goes from pattern 3 to 4...does it makes sense what I'm asking?
OsmoseSound I have no need for arrangement, I prefer to change patterns live as I play. Arrangement mode seems to kill the performance aspect of the Octatrack, at least in my mind. Functionally, Flex and Static machines are exactly the same. The only real difference is where the sample data is stored (CF/Static or RAM/Flex) and how fast is can be streamed. Oh and only Flex has recording buffers. But as far as programming them goes, they work the same.
+Inflatable Robot As far as I know it's not possible to store the tempo assignments of patterns in the Octatrack. That's something that only works in the arranger. This means you have to memorize the tempo of each song and dial in changes while playing live, right?
but i have only 4 Parts! when i make a song, i have a Intro, Start, Brake, Refrain, Brake 2, Refrain 2, End 4 Parts are not enough! I dont understand it :-(
Hi there, I've never changed samples using parts. Isn't it easier to change it using parameter lock, that would give you possibility to use both samples in one pattern. Actually you could have different sample on each step of the pattern. Can you do that with parts as well? Could you do video about micro timing and slide function? thanks
+TuneFRK Yes you could use p-locks to change samples without using parts, which works great for one shots. However, I do Part changes when I need to change a lot of things at once like effects and samples. I often have my drum loops sliced and set on consecutive triggers and that does not work so well when using p-locks to change samples. Micro timing and slide, sure I can do a video on those. I will try to have that up in the next couple of weeks.
Great ! changing pattern is what i'm looking for ! i want a new machine which doing sampler but i don't know what can i buy... This octatrack is very cool ! but very expansive to :/ do you know an other sampler which doing exactly the same things of your video ???
+Mahony Rakete Dude, sorry but NO MAN, PLEASE ! : Changing between patterns that have different sounds assigned is probably one of the most basic operations one can think of on an instrument like this. The Octatrack requires the (complicated) procedure that's described in this video to do so. You're limited to a number of four of these program changes for all the patterns that use the same bank. On almost any other device you simply dial in a pattern, dial in different sounds for the parts, maybe press save and that's it. The OT won't even store the tempo assignments in pattern mode. For an Octatrack fan I guess it's OK to cope with these issues but please don't try to tell others that this concept makes it superior over other machines when the opposite is the case. I don't want to argue, just asking all of you to be true to the facts please.
Too late? No, never. The OT has some significant advantages over the DT. Really the only thing that the DT has over the OT is conditional triggers, which are admittedly very cool . Personally I would never trade my OT for a DT, or for anything else really.
Nice video, thanks! My problem is changing between patterns, like you do, without having to stop the sequence. I on say A1, press the patternknob and A2, releases it... nothing happens. The screen says A1 > A2 but I have to stop the sequence for the sequence to change from A1 to A2. Anyone else had this problem?
@@InflatableRobot I am trying to have a song per pattern. Diff samples on each pattern...4 parts to a song. I CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT! Losing my mind...keep copy this paste that lose this project...lose that....I just want to use a BANK per pattern and be able to go pat 1 having 4 parts and be a song..then pattern 2 diff samples..all without STOPPING OCTA..> THANKS LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!
Ok I think I understand. Patterns themselves only hold the trigger data (, p-locks and timing) and not data about what samples/machines/fx are being used, that data is held in the Part (4 Parts per Bank). Patterns are 'linked' to Parts but this link can be broken and changed. If you were to change your approach and use Banks as the 'song', and Patterns as the 'parts' then what you are trying to do would work fine...at least if I understand the issue correctly. So, let's say Bank 1 is your song. Set your Pattern 1 to be linked to Part 1 (this is default), Pattern 2 to link to Part 2, Pattern 3 to Part 3, and Pattern 4 to Part 4. Now when you switch Patterns you also switch Parts. You can now program your song with these 4 Patterns and copy/paste won't change things in other parts of your song.
When i opened the part menu all my samples get deleted and some others came out. It wasn't a new project so those old samples were somehow stored. In fact, the whole project i was working on doesn't exist anymore. Someone knows if there is a way to undo and get back my stuff? It is true that possibilities are infinites with this machine, but this kills creativity and enthusiasm. This machine is shit and i can't wait to get rid of it as soon. Then unfortunately the market gives not so many options yet, but i'm waiting.
Why didn't they just call them kits. Parts sounds to much like patterns to me. When I am communicating with another musician and I say "this part" we are talking about a musical phrase. Not timbres or arrangments.
Yep, I was real close to returning mine when I first got it. The learning curve was steep but now that I know my way around it's become my #1 desert island pick.
Thanks for the concise explanation. I’ve watched a few more recent tutorials that are rather lengthy and don’t quite explain the subject. Nice work.
Thanks, I try to keep it short and to the point. Glad you got some utility out of it.
This is basically the best Octatrack video ever made. Always refer back to it. Thank you for clearing it up! (again and again!) ---> best way to use the bloody machine for daw'less lives !!!
This was friggin great. Took me 3 days of searching to find an answer to this specific question
Amazing, that did clear things up, thanks - and 5yrs after the original video was posted!

Yes pretty much. Parts hold the settings for the selected sample, fx, and scenes (slider settings). And there are 4 parts per bank, so you can completely change all 8 tracks and all 16 scenes. Each of the 16 patterns per bank can be assigned to any of the 4 parts.
@@InflatableRobot Thank you!
Thank you
hmmm i changed samples on the same machine in different patterns and it stuck :/ didnt need to use parts
addition/correction: my second pattern was made on its own, the sample screw up only happens with the pattern when its copy pasted.
@@InflatableRobot Ok. Thanks for the explanation. I am starting to get it!
very helpful tx
Inflatable Robot I'm having the same issue as the original poster (just got the Octatrack.) For example I have:
On Part One:
PATTERN A01
Track 1 - Synth Sample 001
Track 2 - Bass Sample 001
Track 3 - Sound FX Sample 001
Once I save this in Part One, I then do this:
Part Two
PATTERN A02 I assign:
Track 1 - Drum Loop 002 (from an empty Sample Slot in the list)
and then I save Part Two.
Ooh, just looked up sample locks. Nice!
Thank you, this was confusing to me. Now its not any more!
So a "PART" is more like a kit as in the rytm/a4?
Yeah, functionally the same.
Hey thanks, I was lost in this feature and the manual wasn't very clear...
I had the same problem, I found an explanation on the elektron forums that made it click for me and after that it seemed so simple.
you can only haye 4 parts ? for example if i have 16 patterns in a project how can i do ?
You have four parts per bank. It's like this: project - > 16 banks - > 16 patterns. So basically you have 4 parts per each group of 16 patterns.
@@InflatableRobot thnx my friend i figured out last night
got it! Thank you! ;-D
Is the Partsection on every Bank the same or are the Parts another when i switch from Bank 1 to Bank 2 ?
Split Mission Each bank has its own set of four parts.
ty very much!!!
Thanks so much brother. How would you use different parts in the arrangement? Say i want the sample in T1 to change in the arrangement when it goes from pattern 3 to 4...does it makes sense what I'm asking?
I guess I don't understand. I thought this video explained how to do that.
Inflatable Robot Do use arrangement at all?
Inflatable Robot Was not working in a Flex machine...is working in a Static Machine. I think that's the issue.
I dont understand it :-(
Use the arranger!! Cuckoo has a nice tutorial on this.
Is it too late to get into the OT?
I prefer it over the DT
Pls assist.
Too late? No, never. The OT has some significant advantages over the DT. Really the only thing that the DT has over the OT is conditional triggers, which are admittedly very cool . Personally I would never trade my OT for a DT, or for anything else really.
Inflatable Robot. Thank you and cheers to that. I'm sure now !!!
OT has conditional trigs as well now
Nice video, thanks!
My problem is changing between patterns, like you do, without having to stop the sequence. I on say A1, press the patternknob and A2, releases it... nothing happens. The screen says A1 > A2 but I have to stop the sequence for the sequence to change from A1 to A2. Anyone else had this problem?
Wait for the pattern to finish playing
Do you have a vid with banks in relation to the parts.....before I lose my mind! LOL
Not currently. Could you be a bit more specific as to what aspect of banks and parts you are having trouble with?
Problem is that it doesnt stay. Changes the machines back
Be careful that you are switching parts and saving the part before switching back.
Then unfortunately the market gives not so many options yet, but i'm waiting.
oooooooohhhhhhh
Why didn't they just call them kits.
Parts sounds to much like patterns to me.
When I am communicating with another musician and I say "this part" we are talking about a musical phrase. Not timbres or arrangments.
Hard agree. So much confusing stuff baked into the OT.
Elektron should pay you. Sure.
That would be nice
Unbelievably weird i do the same but doesnt workkk hahahaha
pffff
+ben vanmassenhove Exactly... ;)
Feel like, although this machine has great possibilities, it's a pain in the ass to use, therefore no thx...
Yep, I was real close to returning mine when I first got it. The learning curve was steep but now that I know my way around it's become my #1 desert island pick.
Thank you!!!
