Octatrack Tutorial: Parts and Patterns
Переглядів 51 тис.10 років тому
This quick video will hopefully make clear how parts and patterns work together when using the Octatrack.
Big like. I just got an octatrack and have watched probably 30 video guides and still didn't understand that the triggers and parameters locks were separate from the parts.
That was a great movie!
this video was relaxing and entertaining at the same time
Relaxing, entertaining and educational!! 😁
I really like watching those restoration videos where there isn't any talking. I try to go for that vibe.
Really liked how you went through the whole process from start to finish here!
I'm glad you liked it, I've got a few more broken pedals that I'm planning on fixing (hopefully) in some future videos.
Awesome!! Do more of these!!
Great to see the process to bring something like this back to life!
For sure, I feel like doing stuff like this is easier than a lot of people think and I just try to walk through the process and maybe make it less intimidating.
That box is insane.
This was friggin great. Took me 3 days of searching to find an answer to this specific question
I am so stupid. Maybe this video is old? I guessing not though. I followed directions each step. It is still the same sample on both parts. But thanks for the video. I really do appreciate you even though this is nine years ago. And I will probably be one of those people who just gives up on the Octatrack.
Nah you aren't stupid, shit is just weird. Kinda sounds like the OT isn't switching parts. Let's try this. Do the following with the OT stopped. Select your first pattern, then go into the parts menu and select part 1 (up arrow) and hit YES. Then select your next pattern, go into the parts menu, select part 2 (right arrow) and hit YES. Now open your parts menu again, and while it is open hold your pattern button and switch between your two patterns. You should see the part switching as you switch patterns. Don't give up, it will click if you keep at it.
@@InflatableRobot WowI I appreciate you so much. Yes, that worked indeed. So I guess that just means that patterns can be assigned to parts. I am still not quite sure why that makes sense in terms of the architecture of the OT. But I will keep at it. But all of the samples are global in a project? In other words when I change a sample in one pattern it changes it for all the patterns in a project? I am so used to my Model Samples and Model Cycles, it's hard so hard to make the jump to the OT. Thanks again.
@@swampdweller5 Hell yeah, glad that worked. There are 4 parts per bank and the parts tell the track which sample to play from the global list of samples. So I usually think of a bank as a song, and the 4 parts let me have 4 setups per song. So like Part 1 will be the intro, Part 2 can be the verses, Part 3 can be the chorus, and Part 4 the outro. If I even need to use them all, which I usually only use 1 or 2 parts for a track.
@@InflatableRobot Ok. Thanks for the explanation. I am starting to get it!
do you prefer the sound of this to the Matrix 1000?
A friend of mine had a 1000 and it sounded the same to my ears.
isn't it kind of odd how the octatrack forwards the keyboards midi data to the external synth using the midi out vs midi through
MIDI Thru does work on the OT as you would expect. But if you want to record the MIDI into the OT sequencer for the OT to control an external synth this is one way you can set that up.
SOLD!
Props, short and to the point.
I don't know what's up, but the octatrack will not hear midi notes in audio mode unless it's either playing, which it won't let me play the synth while it's playing unless I'm in midi mode; it won't play the synth if it's stopped in the audio mode and I'm messing with fx in the thru track or recording a pickup machine in audio mode. I don't know what happened, I could record a loop into the pickup machine and record and play while watching the pickup counter last night (midi keys>octatrack auto ch1>synth>thru A>headphones/ext mixer (which the led flashes when it plays the synth or I play in the midi page)). It hears my synth, it plays my synth everywhere but when I'm in audio mode, so I can't see the counter on the pickup machine counter or mess with fx. edit to say I figured it out that audio note out says ext it works.
I'm so freaking confused about why I can't record the instrument I'm syncing. What am I doing wrong? I'm midi synced and plugged into input ab
[TRACK] + [REC1] will sample from the external input AB to the track recorder of the track. But you may want to try setting up another track with a Flex machine, as these have access to any of the 8 recording buffers in the sample slots, just scroll up. On this Flex track you can set up a Record Trig to automatically record so you don't have to go back and edit the sampled recording.
Prolly the best tutorial for octa. Simplified and Crystal clear. U rock. Was a nightmare to sequence my system 8 and jdxa lost in translation constantly...not anymore because of this tutorial
Yeah it can be tough, glad you got something out of the video.
@@InflatableRobot I think after elektron mk1 you can safely go work at a nasa based station as controlling the space ships ahaha 😆. But in a way I found it 1000x more times to find my sound there vs the mpc x. Is my brain design to function in a radical way like elektron machines. But that sequencing is linear and it was tricky haha so thanks a lot!!!
amazing thanks a bunch!!
Does this mean we could have all different sounds (8) for each patter on a different part? I thought it was just one sound, sorry, I’m almost there I think
Yes pretty much. Parts hold the settings for the selected sample, fx, and scenes (slider settings). And there are 4 parts per bank, so you can completely change all 8 tracks and all 16 scenes. Each of the 16 patterns per bank can be assigned to any of the 4 parts.
@@InflatableRobot Thank you!
I got an M8 headless on a gamepi43, the latest firmware (I think 3.0.3) with hyper synth and a ton of new features is amazing! Ordering one for July!
For sure, it's like a completely different thing from where the firmware was when I first got it.
thanks for the video!
Seems like you killed the stereo in the reverb effect. Why not run left into one delay line and right into the other?
Thanks for the concise explanation. I’ve watched a few more recent tutorials that are rather lengthy and don’t quite explain the subject. Nice work.
Thanks, I try to keep it short and to the point. Glad you got some utility out of it.
I am trying to setup OT Mk1 for longer sets, 90+ minutes of performance (ableton taking care of sequencing other hardware synths) I am going via the banks system, so Bank A part 1, Bank B part 2 etc.. Would this also be a way of doing things or would having parts per pattern be quicker?
When you select a Bank you must also select a Pattern. So yes, it would be quicker to use Patterns with different Parts assigned. You could then stay in each Bank longer, switching Patterns rather than switching Banks which takes extra button presses. But if you have a system that you understand and works for you, then it may be better to just stick with what you are comfortable with.
Nice! I have the same setup+Matrix 1000 together in poly chain. I hear in the video noise coming from the Matrix 6 and I have the same problem. Is this normal, is it possible to fix?
That noise is actually from a guitar amp I forgot to turn off before recording and I was too lazy to go back and redo everything. These days my matrix makes zero noise, or sound in general as I need to repair it. I think I blew an opamp near the output 🙃
@@InflatableRobot Ohh, I see. Mine has unfortunately this little noise. Anyone knows how to fix it?
@@M80- I imagine that would be due to some components that are getting near their end of life. The last time I had my matrix repaired it had been getting lower in volume over time until it stopped working. Took it in and got it recapped along with some new opamps and a new mux, and it came back sounding way better than I had ever heard it. With something that old, I'd suspect the caps first.
@@InflatableRobot Thanks for the info, good to know. Now I am looking for a solution which part could be near his end.
Why didn't they just call them kits. Parts sounds to much like patterns to me. When I am communicating with another musician and I say "this part" we are talking about a musical phrase. Not timbres or arrangments.
Hard agree. So much confusing stuff baked into the OT.
The Evil Dead poster = WIN! I have the Olly Moss Evil Dead poster on my wall! Great review too. Thanks!
how the fuck you only have 700 subs wtf
It takes time and a crapton of videos to get up to 1k, 10k, etc.
Boahh i have my Octatrack since a week now and love it. But parts was a strange thing to understand for me. Finally i understand parts correctly. Thank you 🙏🏼😉
Yes it can be difficult to understand at first, I made this video to try to keep others from struggling like I did in the beginning.
Thanks for the useful tutorial. I am triggering my external synth using the OT trigs successfully now thanks to setting my T1 MIDI channel to the channel matching my synth. But I can't seem to record the OT trigs to create a MIDI sequence I can play back. I want to lay down a MIDI sequence directly to the grid so that I can tweak my synth knobs during playback. Any ideas? Cheers!
Yeah, to live record trigs you need to press and hold [Rec] while tapping [Play]. You will see [Rec] flashing to indicate you are recording. Hold [Rec] and double tap [Play] to switch between quantized and unquantized recording. It will briefly say on the screen what mode you are in when switching.
@@InflatableRobot Yes, I was doing that, but no luck. Didn't know the quantization tip, though, thanks for that (gonna write it down right now!). But, in the meantime I went into MIDI controls and turned off Audio CC In and Audio Note In and that finally worked. Seems to be a lot of latency though, hmmm...
@@qwerwerterytrtyutyuiyuiouiop You may want to look into your midi settings under channels. Default settings have tracks 1-8 set to midi channels 1-8. So if you are trying to record trigs into the octatrack via a external device, that device will need to be set to the midi channel that corresponds to the default setting or whatever changes you may have made. The best approach is to use the 'auto channel' which routes the incoming midi on the selected channel (default ch 9) to whatever track is currently selected. Search 'trig channel' in the manual or go to pg 41 for more information. Personally, I always disable the midi channels for trig inputs 1-8 and only use the auto channel as I tend to use midi channels 1-8 for other gear and this can cause conflicts.
@@InflatableRobot I'm kind of baffled how I can't simply record the OT trigs. I can manually trigger the synth no problem (well, lots of latency...), but can't input anything for playback. I don't want to control the OT with an external keyboard, I just want to conveniently trigger my drum synth using the OT trigs. I was successful doing this by routing things through Ableton, but stand alone I still can't make it work. Strange!!
@@qwerwerterytrtyutyuiyuiouiop The OT is basically a DAW, which gives it a lot of flexibility and power but unfortunately has the drawback of being rather difficult to learn. I'm on discord at Inflatablerobot#3530, hit me up and I bet we can figure it out.
Thank you.
I want one so much since i discovered it today (been thinking about getting a tracker for a while now, and this seems a beast). EU shipping cost seem scary though
Hi! Thanks for your video! Could you explain a little more how you did for your jam? The M8 is the brain? Do you also use an instrument of it or samples? Very nice track btw!
Sure thing. Here the M8 is loaded with some percussion samples I made when I borrowed a friend's modular system, which are sequenced into the drum and percussive bass parts. After programming that out on the M8 I connected it to the digitone, which is sequencing the Nyx. I set up the M8 to follow the digitone when it switches patterns and sync clock.
great tutorial - I've got the MKII and as a mixer can hear the external synth I've connected, but it's not recording + playback as a sequencer. Not sure what I'm doing wrong -
Hmm, maybe check that you've set the midi track on the OT to the right midi channel (remember that you have to press in the knob to confirm).
Did you say Zoiga? :)
I have a Teensy 4.1! That. I...soldered...in place...on a CNC controller. Good job idiot.
We need the midi only version of cubase in a box like this .
Reaper runs on a Raspberry Pi now. Some cherry switches, a 3d printer, and fresh Adderall script might get ya close.
got the teensy and running m8headless - its a great workflow. device is ordered. this thing fits my workflow perfectly and the thought of doing it lying horizontal on my sofa is just something special, and on the train and at lunch… yeeehaa 😀
I keep mine in my backpack so I can jam anytime the mood strikes. It's also inspired me to sit down and do sound design sessions just for sample fodder for the M8.
Ahh yess.. the perfect instrument for my bathroom.
great device... just wish the lcd screen could bit bigger
I often work with it while having the display mirrored on my computer. Much easier to see.
Eh ! It’s an overpriced Gameboy 🤷♀️
For sure, can't even play Super Mario Brothers 2
so good! the more stuff I watch about the m8 the jelly I get. incredible device!!!
It's been pretty great to be able to whip it out at work when I get a min or two of downtime. Sketch out something and plug it into my setup at home later. I've been meaning to post some tips and tricks for the M8, but I work in Healthcare and I've been pretty drained by work lately. Soon though, soon.
is it suitable for DJs to use it as a live sampler/looper in improvisation performance?
For sampling, no not really. It records straight to the SD card so there isn't really a buffer for doing live looping. But you an put it into "live mode" and perform your patterns with mutes, solos and by triggering patterns. Kinda like you might with a launchpad in ableton.
Dig your production choices in the tunes .
This is a helpful and informative review! Great jam at the end
Glad to hear you found it useful, thanks!
Nice hum in your video.
I like to think of it as a bonus drone voice
@@InflatableRobot Lol good one
That OG livid instruments shirt though 🔥🔥🔥
OG Austinite, gotta represent.
Cool sond you make!👍🔥
Wow, that jam is right up my alley. Also thank you for the info, I’m torn between this and the Polyend tracker. I like the bigger screen but this is so tempting!!
Right on, thanks! IMHO the polyend tracker is better as more of a "player's tracker" with it's expanded control interface, but the M8 is better in almost every way on paper. Of course better specs doesn't translate to a better music making experience, so it's hard to say which would be the best option for any given person. You can always try out the M8 by getting a $30 teensy 4.1 and loading the headless software though.
This video was badass! Thanks for a great overview of the M8 bro, love your style! 🤟🏻
So kind, much appreciated! I dig your channel as well. Your production quality has gone through the roof since I first watched your videos.
very good although when you went to make a new pitch shifter you could indeed just have used copy module :D
Yeah I often forget copy is there. I got the Zoia when it was new and I don't think that copy was implemented at launch and I developed bad habits.
Do you want to make music or do you waste time? You might as well play skyrim. Get a life and stop menu diving for $500
It's $550
Did you get one bud?
