Awesome review Rob! I like this little camera!
Just ordered mine today...can't wait to get to work
@slavicmissions The Sennheiser EW112-p G3 Wireless Portable Microphone System is intended for portable wireless operation, such as video and field recording applications. This camera-mountable system includes a UHF diversity receiver, bodypack transmitter and ME2 lavalier microphone.
@Alejandro Romero The two XLR's on the XA10 record as two separate channels unless specified otherwise.
Great review- thank you. Question- what is your process for importing footage to the editing softwares. It seems like when i Import the footage, i lose a lot the image quality...does it have something to do with the AVCHD codec?
Guys this is a superb product review. It's definitely on my wish list.
@cybercab that would be good, but if you want a bit more quality and features go for the xf100
@JCSTrains The HF-S21 is a 2010 model - it's being directly replaced by XA 10's 'consumer' twin, the G10 (also on B&H's site). For starters, as discussed here, it features the new imaging sensor. Last year's models were largely carry-over image sensors from 2009. Other things to note... Zebras for exposure monitoring, manual ring on lens barrel, etc. I really like the removable XLR / handle, so you can get incognito those times you don't need the advanced audio and handling.
@slavicmissions The Sanken COS-11D is available in a wide variety of configurations for use with many wireless transmitters. The Sanken COS-11XPT Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone with Sennheiser Mini Connector (Black) (B&H # SACOS11DPTEB) is compatible with the Sennheiser EW series wireless transmiter/receiver: B&H # SEEW112PG3G
looks great!
It's a cute camera.
@robbiethehood Broadcast television might be those framerates, but TV's themselves now aren't limited to specific framerates.
Just one question.....is the camera you are using a NTSC one? Because I read that the PAL version does not do 24p. Thank you
Cool I don’t have one yet
It looks very cool
I used to use the canon hv30 and hv20
hello B and D . in this camera i can put se microphone kit sony uwp d16 this question is pecause the sony uwp d16 have a p2 plug and the camera have xlr plug!
Can you record from the HDMI output port into an Atomos Ninja while the camara is recording. Is the signal uncompressed, clean, and without all the info that appears in the LCD screen? Is the low light performance equivalent or equal to the XF100?
Dude....this camera looks AWESOME!!! I want to buy a camera like this for my A levels and this looks exactly right as its not that expensive.................one question...........does it have a 3mm microphone slot for an external mic?
can i attach large ef lenses in thie camera for film making if so with what kind of thing.mm
which camcoder is a better choice sony vg nex 10 / canon xa 10 / canon 7d / for low light and cinematic film look.
Hi I wonder if this camera has night vision and if you have good quality
image in that way:) thanks
Hello there. Does this camcorder compete with the Canon Eos-mark ii's resolution? If not, could you tell me a camcorder that does?
@JCSTrains its like 1,500. and i've been wondering the same thing. i think this has a larger image sensor so it captures better light=better quality. there are more pixels, more manual options, a hand grip thing, focus ring, etc.
@googlemanic yup, combined with some stuff in post it'll look great.
The street price is estimated around $2000. I almost bought the JVC GY HM100u. Looks like canon borrowed the concept and IMPROVED IT! Looks like this will be a winner!
MMMMMM.......I like....Canon is giving the VG10 a run for it's money....Thanx B&H..
When is this camera available for purchase?
I bought three of these for a group project and overall think they're great. But the USB cables supplied with two of them stopped working after a couple of months, and finding a replacement isn't obvious. The manual says it's an IFC-300PCU/S USB cable, but when I search this online, the ones that show clearly don't have the same connection to the camera as the cables I have. Does anyone know how/where to get replacement USB cables for this camera?
QUESTION!
will this camera giv me a cinematic effect/feel?
So this camera will give you "movie type" quality? im looking for a professional camera at a decent price
Quick question....does this camera have interchangeable lenses??
Its not a 3CCD camcorder and most networks ask that we supply content filmed with 3CCD's, so is the footage from this machine as good as the Sony ZU1 I use now?
Is this just the consumer g10 with an extra handle?
i confused to choose canon xa20 or panasonic ac90 or sony nex vg30....please give me a suggestion ( sory my english is bad)
What is the equivalent 35mm at the widest angle. Thanks.
I wonder how it compares to the HFS-21 which has some similiar features such as the touch screen and "face tracking". BTW, it looks like it will be going for about $2000.
@alexpho Canon's most professional series of camcorders which are the XL series are Canon's only camcorder with interchangeable lenses, all other camcorders from canon don't have interchangeable lens but you do have teleconverters or wide-angle teleconverters, the XH A1s, XH G1s, XL H1, XL H1s and XL H1a all have a 20x Fluorite L lens.
For filming how does this compare to a 5d Mark iii?
I have the 2 year old Canon HFS-100 which I love so much. However, it really sucks in low light and almost impossible to focus. This is obviously a big upgrade and brings in new technology. I just wish that Canon will make this very same camera and have the lenses INTERCHANGEABLE just like its Sony NEX-VG10 rival. Makes me want to run out and get one !
@robbiethehood 25fps is PAL. 24fps is NTSC, like in North america
Are you filming with this camera?
@alexpho Canon's most professional series of camcorders which are the XL series are Canon's only camcorder with interchangeable lenses, all other camcorders from canon don't have interchangeable lenses
@GoodPictures98 Google for it. The i is always interlaced, and the p means progressive. Interlaced deals with older broadcasting over standard TV channels. It handles the way TV scans every other row and then comes back and does another 'field' of the other rows.
@slavicmissions The Sanken COS-11D Miniature Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone (B&H # SACOS11DB) is intended for professional speech capturing in sound reinforcement, presentation, theatrical, broadcast and recording applications. Its miniature capsule yields a wide frequency response, omnidirectional polar pattern and moisture resistant construction while measuring just 0.15" (4.0mm) in diameter, making it easy to conceal in clothing or hair.
What's different between this camera and the Vixia HF G10 except for the XLR/audio/... module, the IR and the 64GB memory?
what is the difference between 60i and 60p? Is one better than the other for fast/slow motion?
Is this still a decent model? anything better or newer? I'm about to hit the buy button!
Is this camera compatible with IMOVIE '11?
How much does it cost? Cause I really want one.
Anyone know when this will be available?
What would be a good video camera just for filmmaking purposes? I like the compact, high quality camera with a focus ring and the microphone ports, but I don't want to pay for all the touch screen features and the night vision.
does it work below 0 degrees celsius?
can this take pictures
I have a question ....I want to make some video clip so already have audio material and I am not interested for audio(sound) recording quality(it is already recorded as a song),I only care for visual side.
so which one is better for me Canon XA10 or Canon Vixia HF G10 ???? please no biased answer.thank you whoever answers me
Damn...
i was to buy the sony vg10 but this looks very good. even better.
No, the footage is from our usual in-house A camera. Thanks for watching.
@bouchandre NTSC is 30fps, or 29.97 to be exact. 24fps is the frame rate used in film.
Hi, will canon XA 11's Microphone terminal which is red in colour takes microphones without battery power (I mean that operates without battery). Please let me know. Canon XA 11 shows now audio levels when I connect my Boya BY MM1 mic.
See page 76 of the owner's manual for setting audio levels: www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/366136.pdf >Mark
I have seen customer reviews of the handle buttons that rattle because of loose buttons on the xlr handle controls. Please confirm in the comments. Customers only please!
@RoundTheBendFilms Meh, I'd take a T3i over this. No doubt this has a boat load of awesome features (stoked on the XLR inputs for sure) but it shoots in 60i for every mode except 24P. That absolutely kills its usefulness. I'm not looking to deal with the severe ghosting that accompanies that format. I would buy this in an instant if it shot all progressive frames.
I must have this!!!!!
What no XA 20?
@robbiethehood Films are made in 24 fps. Stupid question.
I have noticed the XA10 is the exact same as the Vixia HFG10, only difference is the name and the XA10 has a handle
one problem I've seen (and heard) is that some xa10(s) have loose audio control buttons and wheels causing a lot of rattle.
oh well, I've found some great pro camcorders that I can go with.
Why does this look like a pro version of a Vixia R series camcorder
With its dual XLR Inputs, dual SD memory card slots, 60i, PF30, PF24, native 24p recording modes, professional focusing and exposure aids: magnification & peaking, waveform & zebra patterns, native 1920 x 1080 1/3"CMOS Image Sensor, the XA10 is an excellent entry-level choice for the fledgling filmmaker. This IS a professional canon camcorder.
That's cute.
Does this camera have a manual focus ring on the lens???
Matias Stetson Yes it does. No zoom ring though :/
Do you all think this is good enough for a documentary shot in the wilds of Alaska? Looks decent to me but does anyone else have a thought?
oi
i like this almost more better then the sony nex10100u i think thats what it is
but canon doesnt have a alot of choises on cams like this this is the only cheap to good camara to the sony you have like 3 or 4 to pick from in the cheap to good price rancge which is under 2000 but this is good but its 2000 which isnt bad
but whats a good camara for around 1500 with this kinda settings
the end
:P
IT IZ SO TINY !!! :O
I have this wonderful camera but i have a question? What is the best microphone to used it to record weddings?..somebody can help me?
Martin Ridriguez There is no single microphone solution for weddings. For miking the bride or groom at the ceremony I recommend a wireless lavalier system like the Sony UWP-D11 Integrated Digital Wireless Bodypack Lavalier Microphone System (B&H # SOUWPD1130) featuring an all-metal construction, easy to read LCD displays, a wide switching RF bandwidth, USB power and charging, automatic channel scanning, infrared synchronization between transmitter and receiver, Mic/Line switchable input on the bodypack transmitter, a true diversity receiver, PLL-synthesized tuning, a headphone output on the receiver, output gain controls on the receiver for optimizing the input level into a camera, and digital companding circuitry. The package is suitable for a wide range of wireless applications such as ENG, documentary work, talk shows, conferences, and more. bhpho.to/1AUQm3e
For an on-camera shotgun mic, I like the Sanken CS-1e Short Shotgun Microphone (B&H # SACS1E) is a professional microphone specifically designed for boompole and video camera mounted applications alike. The CS-1e features a short, lightweight design that remains hidden from video camera frames, yet comfortable to operate while mounted onto a boompole. In addition to its convenient size, the CS-1e's DC biased condenser capsule and output electronics yield uncanny directivity and long range, greatly minimizing off-axis noise and feedback. Its extended reach and improved low-frequency response deliver the range, noise rejection and sound quality ideal for professional broadcast applications, video audio capturing, film and event videography. bhpho.to/1eqCaRP

B and H Thank you so much for you help i already order the sony lavaliere mic from B&H, do you think i need the zoom h4n for get more quality of audio?
Martin Ridriguez I would recommend using the H4n if you are not happy with the audio you are now obtaining from your current camera and microphone combination. The H4n will yield high resolution audio that will need to be synced with the camera's audio track during the editing process I recommend using Red Giant Plural Eyes 3 for video/audio syncing tasks:

please if anyone over here help me out .me blurry pictures with my Canon XA10. what will be the problem ... is the boy to agradeser
To better assist you on figuring out why your videos are blurry, please email AskBH@BHPhoto.com with a description of the settings you currently have the camera in. |Heather S|
I would have to get a loan to buy this camera.
1/3-inch sensors with 2.07 Mpixel resolution? Hmm... Sounds like the HV20. Old is new again. Anyway, this looks like a winner, exactly the size and features that I want. And Canon was smart to avoid an external cable from XLR adapter to the body. But the AF/MF button placement is awkward, they should have put it beside the focus ring on the camera body. And built-in memory is just lame, I am not going to connect my camera to my PC every time I want to offload video.
I really really wish Canon would add 60p. If not in 1080, then at least a 720p option. I want 23.97 and 59.94 options.
around $1,700
Never seen it that low. It's about $1800.
Canon has not released or announced an upgrade for the Canon XA10 yet.

The Canon XA10 is still a good quality camcorder in it's price range. Other models you can look at and consider are the Sony HXRNX30 as well as the upcoming Canon XA20.

The only thing I don't like it is the touch screen.

Hello, how are you? I apologize for my bad translation, since I am using the google translator, to be able to address you. I would like that this of the handling of Canon XA10 could also do it in Spanish, for those of us who have the bad fortune of not mastering the English language. Beforehand thank you very much. Greetings from the CDMX. México.
@TheSawfan101 $1,999. Sucks but I WANT IT SO BAD TOO!!!
@gearsbeast360 about 2000€.
No, it does 1080 60i, 24p, PF30, and PF24 frame rates

Looks nice but I'll stay with my 7d simply cause im able to change the lens and thats the most important thing. So once again canon missed the point of what we production people want.
About $2,000
@boristrap nononononononon DONT buy the vg10. my brother bought it and the camera quality was horible even in correct lighting.
it doesn't look professional camcorder.
Price: $1,699.00
