I am Professor Lopez, thank you so much for this selfless and humanistic sharing of knowledge, I hope that I can be as patient as your way of teaching... God bless you...
It is very generous of you to show us how this works, especially since many students are struggling with SPSS and data analysis. It seems like numbers and data don't come easily for most social science students. So again, I owe you so much and keep on doing what you are doing - because it really helps! Thank you
Rosie, you made a good observation, I also like the way you have put it over. Instead of just going off the wire and accusing for the slip, you were very balanced and quite polite to point it out. And your appreciative nature is nice. In all I am sure you will agree that the Professor did a good job, taking time in putting things across.
Phil I'm just gonna exaggerate and say you're the best. Thank a lot man, you made me master SPSS without much stress, saving me time, money, and energy. I loved your presentation. Thanks a mill
Hi there, thank you for a nice comment, you don't get too many of these on you tube :). Yes, I agree, professor has done an amazing job in taking his time to do this video, and I really appreciate it. I just did my stats exam at postgrad level and every bit of information that could refresh my stats knowledge from a while ago helped immensely.
Thanks you so much. I have been struggling with my data for weeks now, trying to complete my research for my MA, and I did download the PSPP programme but could not make head not tail of it, but now it all makes sense. It will also work out my means and standard deviations. Again, thank you, it's a God send!
Phil Chan, wanna say "thank you very much " which is form china ,I have stong interests in data analysis and resolve to be a good data analysist , thats so helpful of your vedio. Thanks ....
Thankyou very much your video was very informative for me i was just in search of a clue how to use it so after playing this video for few minutes i did my data entry in no time
I normally dont comment on UA-cam videos, but this video made me to do the opposite. Full thumbs up to you.. Very well explained and easy to understand.
Helloo!! great teacher I extremely happy to have learn something from you video this morning. Thanks a lot. I can now go ahead with my likert scale data entry. Michael from Cameroon.
ok !! Thanks for the best yet help--easy to follow along and understand- KUDOS TO YOU !!I was lost in the classroom garbled setting- good luck with the videos- you are awesome!!
Glad it helped Aida. For everyone who likes a video, I appreciate it if you share it with friends. "Sharing is caring!" Think about your friends who are struggling with SPSS!
Phil Chan i have 4 question in questionnaire that represent dependent variable and 3 question in the questionnaire represent independent variable 1,how can i combine all this question to represent depended variable and independent variable 1 because i want to use dependent variable with Independence variable in correlation analysis?
11:29 should be nominal, correct? It was left at "scale" in the video. Just confirmation. I love the videos BTW. They are excellent and I provide them to my students in Research Methods. However, there are times I like to go back and follow your thought process - which helps me in presenting.
Hi Michael Yes, you are right. This was one of my earlier videos, and I didn't plan it carefully. I left the "Measures" column as its use is for (a) reminding the modeller about the nature of the variable, (b) only matters if you use Chart Builder. I am glad if you can use the videos in your courses. I think there are a number of colleges recommending the videos to their students. There are common question students wish to ask when doing a project over the holidays and they may find it hard to contact their professor. On another note, I don't like SPSS. What is routine in other big stats packages like Stata, and R, you need to pay for add-ons with SPSS, or link SPSS to R - well you might as well use R.
I see. So, now you have piqued my interest in Chart Building. Do you happen to have a video on that? BTW, your video on how to handle multiple answers "tick all that apply" was perfect. I had students confused as to how that should be dealt with - and I personally know that students (as newbies) prefer your speed and thorough explanations. I saw where you can commented about some thinking they were too slow - at least for my students, the speed is right. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos.
Hi Michael I don't have videos on Chart Builder, but I might have used it as part of another analysis. Well. it's something I can do. Thanks for the idea. You know how it is when you are teaching a group - you can never satisfy all students. A good thing about being on video is that viewers can rewind, so my more recent videos are at normal pace.
Thank you ahmetrics. I am entering my data into SPSS, but I have difficulty assigning the right measure to 4 of my variables. Would you check them and say if I got any of them wrong? I am comparing newspaper articles. 1. Article size/Word count (up to 100; up to 500; up to 1000) (ORDINAL) 2. Page (1,2,3...) (ORDINAL) 3. Number of quotes per article (SCALE) 4. Description of Volvo (positive, neutral, negative) (ORDINAL) Thank YOU again!
thank you for a wonderful tutorial. But I am a bit confused regarding the marital status, will it be nominal or a scale? I think it should be nominal in the measure...isnt it?
What measurement would you use for age that has been put into categories? (Ex. 12-25 & 26+) Would that be ordinal? Also what would the measurement scale be for a participants answers on a qualitative question where they would rank how they felt 1-5? Would this be nominal? I averaged the scores afterwards so that would make the combined answers ordinal right?
Thanks for all the comments in these recent days this summer...though I am on holiday, seems like a lot of you are toiling away with a project...good luck to you all!
Thanks Kimberly I'd like to do a video on Cronbach's Alpha - a popular measure of internal consistency of a scale (and one that some dissertation supervisors/journals insist on) - used in questionnaire analysis. Can any of you share with me your data set that I would use to demonstrate this? Am after a data set that isn't too complex ie doesnt have loads of wierd variables that will take a layman hours to understand.Data from social science, marketing, medical one will do. A small part of the data would do. Thanks Kindly Phil
Phil Chan Hi Phil. Your video was definitely a wealth of information. I just completed my Master's Thesis. Sure I don't mind sharing but I just have to check with my professor the university's IRB to see if it's ok to share my data set from my research. I did my research on the public's perception of the disabled. I will let you know what they say. And you are welcome:). Kimberly
Hi Phil, I'm having a bit of a SPSS breakdown. My Masters research project is comparing European and American Amur leopard husbandry techniques. I have received 29 questionnaires from America and 28 from EU! I can't figure out how to enter these into SPSS :( totally confused.com
Hi, Phil can i ask why i get "the value is negative due to a negative average covariance among item. This violates reliability model assumptions. You may want to check item recoding. I get this when i do the Cronbach alpha reliability test. My N item is 5 and sample of respondent is 60. May i know what have i gone wrong.
Hi there video was great, did you make a mistake with the marital states variable? You had it as a scale in your variable view when it is supposed to be a nominal measure. Thanks
on the variable tab, how did you get the name, type, width, decimal and etc.. do we have to do it manually or…? i am so lost only on that part! but i understand the whole thing haha.
Very useful video, thank you so much. I've got a question I hope you can answer though (google is failing me unfortunatly). I've got two separate surveys for one research but I want to use the two in the same SPSS file so I can analyze them both. My only idea is to start the other survey at No. 21 (As in 1) since the other survey ends at 14. Any ideas? Thank in advance!
Hi Phil, How would I enter my data for age if it is in categories of 18-24, 25-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, and 65+? Would it be the same as for gender? Using nominal data and coding the values so for instance 18 = 18-24? I am trying to analyse variance in opinions of a new development within Stokes Croft, Bristol. Thanks!
Sir, Are you available to answer a few private questions on entering data/Variables into SPSS? I have a full-blown survey, that requires multiple answers. The confusion is what should I be entering as variables after I get passed the General data entries in the variable view, like in your video. I could send you a copy of the survey if that would help. Hi. I have my hands full working on my new series on regression analysis for newbies. Err....if the 35 questions are the same for each case you just need 1 extra column for "case number" I guess. Whether you need all data on one file depends on the aim of your analysis. It you are treating each case individually you don't need to combine all 5 cases into one data file. Good luck though.
Hello, I have been looking your videos but did not find how to code a matrix, do you know how to code a matrix with quite some variables .. ? Thank you !
+Nicolas Fortunato When I read your message I thought you were asking how to create a matrix in the stats package R - which would be a standard question. But to create a matrix in SPSS - I think you are asking something else, but I don't know what. I don't know why you would want to create a matrix in SPSS.
Phil Chan I have a matrix done, that is on a physical paper which is regarding beverages (lines) VS occassion of consumption.and frequency (collumns).. the thing is .. how to code a big matrix into spss and keeping it simple...
+Nicolas Fortunato Actually, what I show in the video is a matrix. You have the cases on the rows, and variables in columns. With your example, it sounds like you are interested in presenting the results, rather than going on do stats analysis on it. You could present a table in excel. Sorry, if not helpful. Just guessing by what you are saying.
thankyou !!!! very helpful I however was wondering , how do you put data for a question that is divided into segments ,eg 1.age ... 1a. if 20 (above) ... 1b. if ... you get what I mean?

thank you sire. really helpful
Hey Phil. What about if I have questions with multiple parts? Like 1., 1a, 1b, etc..
Treat them as new questions, so they will have separate columns in SPSS
Hi, this tutorial is great, however I'm using a questionnaire that has 3 questions per scenario. How would I go about doing this?
Hi Phil,
How would I enter my data for age if it is in categories of 18-24, 25-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, and 65+?
Would it be the same as for gender? Using nominal data and coding the values so for instance 18 = 18-24?

Sir,
Are you available to answer a few private questions on entering data/Variables into SPSS? I have a full-blown survey, that requires multiple answers. The individual is required to read 5 different case studies and answer 35 questions per case study.
The confusion is what should I be entering as variables after I get passed the General data entries in the variable view, like in your video.
I could send you a copy of the survey if that would help.
Thank you

Phil Chan I could send you a photo of the matrix I'm doing, to better show you what I mean.. ?
Thanks for this video,i love it
What is the best way to handle "not applicable" responses in scales?
Treat as a type of missing value
so far so gud, thank you
thankyou !!!!
very helpful
I however was wondering , how do you put data for a question that is divided into segments ,eg
1.age ...
1a. if 20 (above) ...
1b. if ...
you get what I mean?
Yes, you have a scale/continuous variable and you are turning it into groups. This is how to do it:
ua-cam.com/video/9PZUyU2vnb8/v-deo.html
If I am inputting data from an asymmetrical likert scale where the values range from -1 negative to 5 for a positive, but the values do not necessarily represent a word value, for example agree strongly agree, is it possible to simply label the -1 value with a -1 label and 5 with a 5 etc. or do i just skip this step altogether, i.e the representative value is inferred?? i may not have worded that question very well but its confusing me
Sounds like the variable is scale, in which case just enter them as normal numbers.
