- A very unique, very regular Russian protestor chose a very odd way in order to express his feelings about society: Nailing his junk to the sidewalk.

I agree - this guy is a nut. These people here in this thread must have gone to shit schools lol. I _LOVED_ earning my art degree. And the healthy competition between students was a great tool for inspiration. I got my dream job right after school was finished too. Wouldn’t change that period of my life for anything.

personally i find it admirable that this guy went to such extreme lengths to stand up for his beliefs and principles. i dont think i could ever feel so strongly about anything to the point where i would nail my balls to the ground

I know this is way late but i agree, what tells me is the fact that after fleeing to france he immediately starts "protesting" about their issues which personally i think is wrong to go another country and start voicing your disagreement with it after they let you seek asylum there pretty ungrateful, so imo he's just looking for excuses to act out

Just to clarify though, because you mentioned “I don’t know what he was trying to accomplish”... acts like this aren’t designed to make immediate change but, as I’m sure you’re aware, Russia is an insanely oppressive country and acts like this draw awareness. @@fishsmell2570 yeah I just feel like it's unfair to put a potentially traumatic experience like that on a child for the sake of... protesting or whatever his end goal ultimately was? it's okay to protest for things you care about, obviously, but not when it crosses the line to where you're forcing people to witness disturbing things like that that they didn't give consent to see, ESPECIALLY children.

I don't think he is. His actions are extreme to make a point. Pussy Riot jumped around and they got sent to prison. He nails his balls out in public and gets off scot free. He clearly made his point.

Performance art is always uncomfortable, usually because you get it and it is disturbing or because you get it and think it is just stupid or because you have no clue what's going on and don't want to seem ignorant. Imagine looking this guy in his very sincere and demented eyes as he is nailed to the road and saying, 'I just don't understand!'
I do have a criticism... The way that you speak about Pussy Riot suggests that they are over, gone, etc., when Masha was arrested only recently in the protests around Navalny's arrest and sentencing and faces a pretty stiff sentence because her earlier charges and repeat offences. The group is still at the heart of the Russian protest movements and, well, I am concerned for her if again convicted as I am for Navalny ever walking out of a Russian prison.

In fairness, if I remember correctly, I believe Pussy Riot’s church protest that you mention first was also being filmed to be a part of a music video for one of their songs, hence the jumping around and all that. It wasn’t just to cause a ruckus in a church. I don’t know that much about Pussy Riot but I did learn and watch a bunch of videos about them and their acts of protest many years ago. They weren’t just protesting by causing a scene in the church, it was also all meant to be filmed for a music video which was also about what they were protesting over. Again, I’m going off memory which I’ll admit is shoddy, but I think that’s what they were doing. I’m also not endorsing anything they did, but I get why they were protesting against Putin’s “reelection”...

I imagine the Russian police put off actually arresting him for so long because once a dude has nailed his own ballsack to the stones, it's hard to figure out a punishment good enough to deter them from bad behavior after that.
