I think Kanye is swirling dangerously close to being an aspiring cult leader. You look at his personality, ego, ideas, wealth, fame/notoriety, living location (compound/land in wyoming), his inability to manage and move through trauma, being "chosen" by god, setting up his own church... it just ticks off a lot of boxes.

There is one theory, the mimetic theory of desire. Which argues how we understand and what is meant when we attribute psychological labels, which we have created through observation, misses the mark. Since in reality we are describing more than the group or individual. We are in fact describing our relationship to the group or individual, and or the individual / groups relationship to another individual / group.
It argues what we are missing, or failing to understand is a dualism.
For example the narcissist is thought of to care only about themselves. However it is the observer who is in effect thinking only of themselves to some degree. After all they are saying in a sense often negatively, “the narcissist doesn’t think about me”. Meanwhile the observer, will also note how the same narcissist does numerous things in service of themselves only because they are solely obsessed with what other people think.

I was diagnosed with bipolar II, and was taking a few different medications, including Lamictal and Latuda. I've been off them for years now and haven't experienced any major depressive or hypomanic episodes. I made changes to my life, including adding more structure to my day, improving my diet and sleep hygiene, and exercising. I think medication was useful to get certain aspects of my life in order, but I think being on them chronically for years would have been counterproductive.

Same here. I took psychotropes for three years until a doctor gave me permission (in fact advised me) to stop taking them and to see how I managed. From time to time, I have been re-prescribed, but never for more than 30-60 days straight since then-& the pills are different today.
Even if diagnosed persons don’t wish to get prescriptions, they should follow some regimen of therapy-because the mind is where their illnesses are showing up-by way of impaired thoughts. To fail to grasp this issue is a true failing, not something to take lightly.

I was a Kanye fan since high school, when he first came up on some mix tapes with Mos Def and Talib Kweli I believe. His first album was 🔥 My girlfriend at the time got it for me cause she knew I was a big fan. Point is, his music was instrumental to my youth, I look back on it fondly.
I didn’t recognize this person on this Rogan podcast. I followed his career closely and always gave him music a fair chance. Lately his music has been garbage. Something has happened to him. Perhaps it’s as simple as they gave him too much money and it amplified his flaws. Idk. Andrew Schultz described this interview the best when he said “Kanye West is a rambling idiot”. I have also been diagnosed with bipolar, and although I wouldn't want to diagnose Kanye myself, I can certainly see why he would have been given a diagnosis of bipolar (the scattered thoughts and grandiosity are very apparent in the interview). At the same time I can understand why Joe, with his particular perspective on medication, would question the need for it in this case. Joe is seeing someone with a highly creative mind, who has had great success bringing his ideas to fruition. He is not seeing the negative sides to the bipolar mind. My feeling when Kanye failed to answer the question about why he was put on medication was that it was likely due to pressure from his family and friends, especially if they had seen the other aspect of life with bipolar. Again, I'm not saying Kanye has or does not have bipolar, just that he does show some behaviours that are required for that particular diagnosis. I myself fluctuate between being convinced I have bipolar and doubting it, which I believe is normal, and a reason why people often come off their meds and then relapse.

My mother has diagnosed bipolar disorder and having seen this condition closely I wanted to commend Dr Grande for explaining very assertively exactly what a state of “ hypo mania” can look like : This meaning it is not a state of complete delusion or impossibility to function like a full fledged Mania episode looks like, but rather a state that bipolar patients seem to enjoy , as they feel a natural “ high” and feelings of grandiosity and power, as well as millions of ideas filling their thoughts very fast , one after another : HOWEVER , and herein lies the problem, the risk of NOT TAKING BIPOLAR MEDICATIONS WHEN DIAGNOSED WITH IT IS that : patients in this state are unable to finish or follow through with most of their thoughts , they just have millions of ideas but few tangible accomplishments, as , we all know , to be able to finish a project you must be able to FOCUS , have discipline, work on the same project until you finish it . This does not seem to be the case with West , he talks a lot but accomplishes less or almost nothing as he is incapable of concentrating on one task at a time . I have seen my mother in this state when she has ran out of her medications and it is not a pretty site . I cannot understand how people still have the false belief that mental health is a CHOICE. And that taking medications is a weakness. IT IS NOT . It is the responsible thing to do , even if the side effects are uncomfortable , you protect yourself and others of unnecessary risk and frustration . Thank you Dr Grande .

Although the paths he takes to get the points across are, let's say unconventional, he did speak a lot of truth

I equate this to die hard Trump supporters that see him as a great leader.

I used to be a big fan of his, until he became hostile to his fellow comedians and to many other people who seemed to have tried to help him at some stage, ruining what could have become a great career in the process. And then I started to think that he might be experiencing some mental issues. If that's the case I hope that he'll get the help he needs.

Hi Dr. Grande. I usually stay out of these discussions, but I recently viewed Joe Rogan's interview with Kanye West and found it very compelling. I've been a psychotherapist for 20 years but I wouldn't dream of offering opinions on Kanye's mental health, personal motivations, or belief system, just from observing this interview. I've found that the more I learn about the people I serve the more humble I get. The mystery, and complexity I encounter in each one of my clients is breathtaking, and, from what I can see, limitless. We therapists could learn so much from Joe Rogan's approach. He is patient, non-judgemental, curious, appreciative, and a times almost tender with Kanye. Where most people see incoherent ramblings that need to be reined in, Joe looks deeper. He waits and ponders and empathizes, and eventually his efforts pay off. After almost 3 hours he finds the "spark" in Kanye. The thing to be valued and appreciated. The thing that we all have in us if someone as committed as Joe will help us reveal it. As therapists with our preconceived notions about mental health, most of us would cut Kanye off, paint him into a corner, insist he get to the point. And in doing so we'd piss him off, and reinforce his feelings of being devalued and misunderstood. Kanye refers to himself as a genius and we think: "Grandiose. Quite dreaming so big Kanye. Come down to earth. You need to think and talk like a normal person--like all the normal people who don't think outside of boxes, and never get anything done." Kanye may be a raving lunatic... or he may be a genius. It's hard to know. But I do know that he feels important and valuable to Joe. Near the end of the interview Kanye says, "Thank you for allowing me to give you the thoughts that are coming into my head as opposed to trying to put me on a grid, because I’m off the grid period. The way I think… I paint in circles." You can hear and see how deeply he appreciates Joe's authentic interest in him as a person--something I'm sure Kanye has rarely experienced in the past. Joe undoubtedly disagrees with Kanye on many fundamental issues. I know from listening to Joe's other podcast episodes that he has serious misgivings regarding Christianity, but he graciously puts all those aside in his effort to accurately understand Kanye. At one point Kanye stops in mid-sentence, closes his eyes and says a prayer. Joe waits patiently for him to finish, not knowing at the time that Kanye was praying, and when he finds out he expresses genuine interest in why Kanye prayed and what he prayed about. America and the world needs more of this kind of attitude. Humility, curiosity, acceptance, critical thought, compassion, empathy. Long live the 3-hour interview! And as far as Kanye goes, he's different. I like different. I mean when was the last time "the same" ever changed anything. I hope, like Joe, we decide to put time and effort into finding the "spark" in Kanye... and in each other for that matter.
