- Cleavers! 🌿 Another wild edible plant that's classified as a weed! this bright green sticky plant isn't just edible its a highly nutritious medicinal herb that grows all around us abundantly. Known by many nicknames Goosegrass, bedstraw, sticky willy to name a few it's scientific name is "Galium aparine" & it's actually related to coffee ☕
You can eat the plant fresh or use it in salads, stews & soups or make refreshing spring tonics & teas. If you roast the seeds of cleavers it makes a free delicious cleavers coffee alternative. You can even use the roots to make a permanent red dye thats so strong it can dye the bones red of birds that consume it. 🐦
The cleaver has been used since ancient times in traditional herbal medicine & it's still used today in the modern world.
During WWII children in Britain were paid to harvest cleavers (as well as other medicinal herbs.) It was used by pharmaceutical companies to make medicine to combat infections throughout the war.
It's the ultimate springtime herb that's been found to improve the health of the lymphatic system. It helps to reduce swelling & inflammation by clearing excess waste & water from the body it's also a diuretic all this combined makes cleavers a great way to help flush out all those unwanted toxins that build up in our bodies throughout winter giving our health & immune system a good spring clean.
In Folklore they believed that drinking cleaver made you beautiful & that the cleaver symbolises "connection" all in all cleavers is a fun edible plant that gives us not only food & medicine but joy too because sticking cleaver to your unsuspecting friends back will forever be funny ✌️😁

Omg I’m gonna get this book now!!! I have been wanting to learn more about foraging! I also have cleavers in my backyard and was elated to find out they were beneficial and edible. I love love your energy and spirit and it’s always great to find another friend of nature ❤️🌱
Is your book beneficial for those of us in North America also, or just the UK?
Cleavers is also the plant responsible for Velcro. A scientist studied cleavers and worked out the nylon hooks would stick to fuzzy nylon fibres. Thus Velcro owes its existence to Cleavers ~ Sticky Weed.
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
That's great information!
I heard it was burdock that gave the idea for valcro
thamkyou for this...i just went out and collected some of this - we are so blessed with what mother nature has given us.............much love and light to you................and yes, there are no such things as weeds........i have been forraging now for about 18 months or over - i love it and have my grandchild involved in ti too.............i also love your energy, thats what happens when your connected to our mother the earth!
Thank you for your lovely comment Wendy 😁
I totally agree
Hi, do you know if Cleavers can still be eaten after flowering? Do they retain their nutritional value after boiling?
I use it in place of rennet to make cheese
Please explain????
Thats what she said
Just a few seconds in and I love this guy...the energy the enthusiasm had to sub....God Bless you my friend
Thank you very much my friend!
Same here!
Well just a simple story but I found myself really enjoying my way through the path he led us down. I was smiling, and I am sure he has made a happy home and his children are blessed to have for their father. It shines though
David Bellamy of the modern world
I call these sticky weeds. I have a book which says to use it with cucumber and lemon and water 😊
Curious! Which book is it?
@moo
It's here in the end of winter, way to soon for cukes to be growing. I soak it in water overnight and it taste lue cucumber
Is it just me, or if people would actually harvest all those apparent 'weeds' for their medicinal purposes, these weeds would no longer be such, because they would be kept under control?
The problem is they spread unchecked in the wild and smother out native plants. Now if they were worth money, people would yank them out of the ground so fast your head would spin. Nature can't win with us.
When people realize that Big Pharma is no good they may become very valuable 😅
The world needs more people like you!
Thanks that's a great compliment 😁
I want to invite him over for dinner tonight. Seriously. Please …can I have an army bring you here. Usher u in next to my husband and I. Amazing! I’ve been looking for this herb and only found it in a few places. Washington state where it’s humid and upper Ca area. Now I’m growing it because it just isn’t that abundant. Isn’t it telling that the Nazis put this herb on the list of noxious weeds! Lol😂ya..that’s how the devil works. His only gift left, deception. Too bad though bcz now the curse is shattered & we r saved ..and also Gods herbs are free to heal all
Yes Please !,,,
I love your enthusiasm for life it really is infectious and your videos alone have helped me through the difficult lockdowns and given me a new view on life, thankyou and please don't stop the good work you and your family are doing ✌️✌️
Thank you Ben your comment let's me know were on the right path 😁
@@homeiswhereourheartis I will be joining the patreon next Saturday 👍👍✌️
I think it contains alkaloids! Kratom is another sister coffee plant, with no caffeine but contains alkaloids that are both energizing AND relaxing at the same time, I bet it’s similar with this plant!! Thanks for the video tying to learn more about plants and plant medicine!
Kratom is not good for you when taken regularly. It's addictive
Darn !! I had TONS of this in my garden but I pulled it all out because I was tired of picking the sticky little seeds off my clothing :-( Now that I know how good it is I will encourage the remaining plants to grow
The sticky balls make a nice drink 😁
Me too. I weeded 3 bin bags of cleavers from my garden last week and composted it. I didn't know it was edible.
@@debbiecurtis4021 woahà that's a lot of cleavers
I've eaten goose grass in soups and stews, I had no idea the seeds could be used for coffee, how brilliant! I've made dandelion root coffee which is really tasty.
The Dandelion root coffee is a great coffee!
How did you do that ? sounds interesting 🤔
@@daniellea271 my recipe: dig up your dandelions, scrub the roots and roughly chop the big tap root into chunks. Take off the little hairlike roots, they burn. Roast in a hot oven for about half an hour till they're dark brown. To make the coffee, I give the roots a quick smash in a mortar and pestle, put about 2 spoonfuls in a saucepan with a Mug and a half of water, and boil for around 15 mins. Should leave you with a mugful of coffee. Strain it!
I was put off after infusing some in cold water. I didn’t strain it, first sip delicious and fresh. Second sip and I took a leaf to the back of the throat!! Oh my days, the little leaf was hooked firmly to the back of my throat 😂 I couldn’t get it out! I had to literally pull it off the back off my throat 🤣🤣
😂 totally something I would do too!
Can you dry it and store it in a glass jar.
I have eaten some raw it's kind of scratchy against my throat maybe buy cooking it in water it will make it more easier to digest . 🤔
Thank you for the information.
We'll keep a eye on your channel . 😃
God bless the American people . 🇺🇲🙂🇺🇲
You absolutely can dry it out or place it in oven to dehydrate.
Ohio, USA here. I just found the first bush walking my dog yesterday!!
Lymph cleanser
outstanding info .... simply given...simple works best for me..Sub'd.
Gilly wife of Mark
Yesterday I went foraging for wild greens for the first time. I found some fresh cleavers and dandelion. But something weird happened. Basically on my way to the patch, birds would be scared and run into the bushes next to the path, as usual. But after I had foraging, the birds along the path ignored me, as if they suddenly trusted me. Weird!
Fantastic video! Everything we need is already there - in nature :) Keep it up!
✌️😁
Oh, I love this plant. We call it sticky backs in ireland for obvious reasons! Have great memories as a child with these! Great video ❤
Any chance you can do some soap recipes? 🧼
Was just wondering if the roots could be used to colour handmade soap.
Yes! That's a wonderful idea! I hope they see this
Hiya guys, thanks for your comments, we love the idea of using sticky weed roots for some red hand soap. We are doing some research into it and excited to share in the future ✌️❤️
We call them Sticky Willys in Ireland.. 🤷♂️😂
It's all over the hedges here in Yorkshire. We call it sticky willy. What great info about this abundant herb.
I love your obvious joy in nature. Very infectious. Personally I love the taste of cleavers water infused overnight in the fridge. Tastes like cucumber and melon.
Yes, and good for the belly. You can compost the pump or give to livestock.😊
Sticky Willies! Up here in Scotland. I'm tempted to give them a go now! Thank you for a brill video 😊
Your welcome 😁
I like wakame salad, but finding wakame seaweed in the US is tough. I wonder if cleaver stem has the same texture after it is cooked.
Thank you. Always interesting information- I love the folklore- our ancient history ♥️
That's my favourite bit too 😁
O..my... sssso funny how exuberant yoo were til yoo ate dat "Velcro weed"
My first taste wuz much da same
I have a suggestion . . . Try placing the sun in front of you, rather than behind you, before beginning to record. this way your face would be lighter all the time, & we wouldn't get 'blinded' by direct sunlight when you move out of the way of the sun. (;
Legend!
I am into everything wild and foraging ... need to get that book for our community when things go down. You can also make deodorant from it. Just need to find something one can use as a facial and body "soap" that is gentle on the skin. Any ideas? 😍
Thanks for the suggestions, we are looking into a hand and body soap, looking forward to sharing in the future ❤️✌️
Can anyone help, I was making a tea but found green fly and other little bugs. Do I clean and prep before consumption ??
Love this guy’s energy, consider me subbed!
3 times a day for 9 weeks. I need to do that 🤣🤣 this was so interesting. Caleb and I were so surprised at the red bones and that this plant is related to coffee. I really want to do what you said about leaving it over night. You are inspiring me to get out and about more. Thanks for sharing
Eating it raw, Why are you not you concerned about the pokers (or what ever you call them) irritating your throat ?
I have it in my garden. I knew it was eatable but as it leaves welts on my skin when it touches me I won't be eating it. Hoerver I didn't know about the red dye. Thank you.
Wow, loads of things I didn't know about cleavers such as the red dye, awesome! I already make a tincture with it and have juiced it but want to try it fresh in soup soon!! Lovely happy video, you always cheer me up guys :)
Cleavers or goose grass ? Here in the US goose grass is different then Cleavers.
I chop up cleavers and put them on my omelette while cooking ( they wilt, so one can put quite a lot ).
Oh my goodness! I had these in my garden and I pulled them. They are rampant now close by.
I'm new to wild edibles so I'm still breaking in. Good to know about the lymphatic system. I'll keep that in mind.
What if you mix it with dandelion roots for a coffee?
Probably not the best mix but check out our cleavers Coffee video 🙂
Love all your videos I have seen, they are so informative
Amazing thankyou ❤❤❤
It literally tastes like cilantro❤
So are the little white flowers an early bloom?
Can it be dried for later use?
Walking along the edges of my yard and came in with cleavers stuck to my socks! I personally have always called it "that sticky stuff" ! 🤣The dog always brought it in after his outside ramble ! I'll gather it up and use it and stop calling the dog bad names for dragging it into carpet! 🤣Really enjoy your channel! Sunrise is a blessing! Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Thanks for watching !
Awesome tips dude🌱💪🌎❤️
What a lovely man you are!
Thank you 😁
Can you freeze it ..? For later use
Can cleavers be dried and stored?
Lol😂 when you turned around at the end. ❤ your videos and ❤ the knowledge you are spreading. Thank you from the States😊
😁
We call it stick tight or hitch hikers
What’s the best way to use it dry?
I had a cleaver as a kid. I could lift a car!
What a beautiful video thankyou so much. I absolutely loved listening to everything you know about cleavers ! You have a lovely outlook on nature. And I'm going to get some right now thankyou again

That was great info. I love the folklore of these plants and it's great that you always add that into your videos. Excellent.
I feel like adding it in is my way of attempting to preserve the knowledge 🙂
Ive got so much of this in my back garden tons of it 💚
Awesome as always :)
Thank you Claire 🙂

Thank you so very much Just "met" Cleavers today about to try some fresh tea🌿Giggles at the ending upon your back😂😆
These are awesome videos. Ive only been doing the edible plants for about 2 weeks and have found about 8 different plants and herbs in my yard. Thank you and cleavers is the last one i just foraged
3 out of 10 for taste - I think I'll continue to feed it the horses for their spring tonics instead! They seem to enjoy it more! :)
Aha it's nicer cooked 😁
@@homeiswhereourheartis haha one day I may try it! "Funnily enough I used to give it to a horse who I had with a deep seated infection and she always enjoyed it and searched it out this time of year so I reckoned it must be good for a tonic
That grows in my garden through my other plants and bushes.. my cats come with the sticky buds on tvem.
Good for you, but it's only a 3 out of 10...got it, bring some herb friends and maybe some honey. :)
Definitely
Great info! Thank you
Cat comes in with them stuck to her!. Seems like cleavers have gone crazy in garden... Due to me not doing the garden.
You just made my day with your beautiful vibe! Bless you, thank you for the education and the enthusiasm for life!
Definitely one of the most fun plants out there! I hope every kid gets a chance to play with them and connect with nature
Us too 😁
Difference between cleavers and woodruff? Woodruff does not seem to be "sticky" but they are closely related?
I was thinking that one was called the surgeon of waste but I think I'm referring to horsetail equisetum
Texas, henbit is growing, waiting for the clevers and dandelions ❤
Love your thorough knowledge about this plant through the world and history. Am looking forward to watching more of your videos
We've over 100 videos! 😁
Great! Looking forward to watching them 😁
I thought Jack by the Hedge was Garlic Mustard not cleavers.
💚💚💚
Good to know. Next time I go wandering in the woods, I will be completely edible from the waist down. 😁
An unforgettable plant! I have always known it as Sticky Buds
❤❤❤
What a brilliant find for me right now. What a lovely guy. Thanks x
I had never heard of this before, and just happened on this post in a group on plant ID. I clicked the video and I learned a whole world of new information on YOUR video! I will be checking out your other videos. I may be hitting you up for an interview on my show. Let me know if you are open to that.
👍🌈
Glad I found this video! Thanks for being amazing!
I've had clever tea many times. It's lovely. Also the sheep I used to look after loved them!
😁
Fantastic! I noticed I have a hug patch growing in my raspberry bed.
I get a rash on my skin when I try to get rid of it in my yard. I use corn huskers lotion to get rid of the rash. Does anyone else have this reaction?
This is great info, thanks! In a matter of a month, cleavers took over an entire fence line and a section of a garden. I spent hour clearing it and had no idea it had uses. I may try to cook some when it comes back.
This video really caught my attention- fun to watch! You are a great teacher of this plant. Can animals have this or any other herbs?
I don't hate this weed in my garden anymore. Thanks for the info.
Love your videos. Always look forward to a new one.
😁
Good to know! There's a lot of it in our garden. Thank you for sharing this!💛🤗🤗🤗
