I'm an upper middle class professional and visited the OC for the first time this past weekend. I fell in love with Huntington Beach and the surrounding area. Unfortunately I decided not to move there because of the state income tax, cost to rent, and cost to buy. Also, from what I observed talking to people in the area, politics is a significant area of frustration and is not mutually exclusive from the economics / cost of living.
