This vivid description of the Bernardine monastery in Lwow (Lviv, currently in Ukraine) monastery was left by the Friesian Ulrich Werdum, who in the years 1670-1672 traveled around the Commonwealth. As the complex was located outside city walls it was equipped with its own fortifications from the east and south. Traces of militant monks have survived to this day. The epitaph of Stanislaw Wyzycki, the famous hussar lieutenant, has been preserved on the facade of the church.
After WW2 and the annexation by the Soviet Union and the expulsion of most of the Polish population from Lviv, the church was closed and devastated. Since 1991 the former Roman Catholic complex is under the care of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Basilian Order.
The “PL-UA. History by drone” project consists of 100 short film productions depicting architectural monuments that were created in the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The series of short documentary films were screened in Ukraine. A Polish-Ukrainian team consisting of historians, journalists, writers, non-governmental organisations and youth joined forces to create the films. Project was financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland.
